Inner and Outer Bhava Karakas

Chapter 3. Every bhava has two layers of significator: an inner karaka (what the native actively projects) and an outer karaka (what comes to the native). Devraj weights the two by the trine the bhava belongs to — Dharma bhavas are 100% inner, Moksha bhavas are 100% outer, with Kama (70/30) and Artha (30/70) in between.

Weighting by trine

TrineBhavasInnerOuterHow to read
Dharma1, 5, 9100%0%Pure self-expression. The planet's inner karakas (e.g. body, organs, individual capacity) flourish; its outer karakas (income, position, public response) are denied — because 1, 5, 9 sit 12th to 2, 6, 10 and so negate them.
Kama3, 7, 1170%30%Desire-driven action. Inner karakas remain healthy; outer karakas yield some result (income, response) but only a modest amount compared to an Artha-trine interlink.
Artha2, 6, 1030%70%Worldly outcome. The planet's outer karakas yield strongly — large income, public position, results delivered with unique capacity. Inner karakas are only average and the 6th here can produce curable diseases of the inner organs.
Moksha4, 8, 120%100%Worst case. Neither inner nor outer karakas yield well — the 4th drains the inner side, the 8th and 12th negate uniqueness on the outer side. The native gets neither healthy organs nor a public role.

Read this as: in a Dharma bhava (1, 5, 9) the outer karaka is effectively silent — only the inner karaka acts. In a Moksha bhava (4, 8, 12) the inner karaka is effectively silent — only the outer karaka acts. The two middle trines blend the layers.

Optimal-interlink rule. When the planet interlinks BOTH the Artha trine (2, 6, 10) and the Kama trine (3, 7, 11), the native enjoys both the inner and outer karakas of that planet — bodily health, public position, and substantial income.

Case study — Sun across the four trines

Devraj's worked example (pp. 46–48). Sun's karakas split into inner (organs, individual capacity) and outer (administrative role, leadership, money received). The trine the Sun interlinks decides which side yields and which fails.

Inner karakas of Sun

Bones, Brain, Heart — depend on the native alone.

Outer karakas of Sun

Administrative capacity, Leadership, Government, Father — depend on others' response.

Sun interlinksInner resultOuter resultVerdict
Dharma
1, 5, 9
Healthy bones, brain, heart — full benefit. No income from the post. Has authority and leadership but cannot earn through it — 1, 5, 9 are 12th to 2, 6, 10 and negate the material trikona.Power without money — "what is the use of having that power without earning?"
Kama
3, 7, 11
Healthy organs — full benefit.Earns money, but a small amount. 3, 7, 11 are not 12th to 2, 6, 10 (neutral position) so income flows but only modestly.Healthy + modest income.
Artha
2, 6, 10
Average. The 6th in the trine can produce diseases of the heart, brain or bones — but curable by medicines.Earns a huge amount. 2, 6, 10 are not 8/12 to lagna, so income arrives without strain. The native works with unique skills — 2, 6 are 8/12 to the 7th (peers), so he stands above his peers.Huge earnings with unique capacity, at the cost of curable health niggles.
Moksha
4, 8, 12
Some disease in heart, brain or bones — the 4th partially negates the inner karakas.Cannot perform with individual capacity, no uniqueness — 4th does not harm the outer karakas directly but blocks their expression.Worst case — neither inner nor outer karakas yield.
Why the negation works. The Artha trine (2, 6, 10) is the material trikona — it delivers income and worldly results. The Dharma trine (1, 5, 9) sits 12th to the Artha trine, so it negates worldly yield. The Moksha trine (4, 8, 12) sits 8th and 12th to lagna, so it blocks individual expression. Only the Kama trine (3, 7, 11) is neutral to the material trikona — which is why a planet that interlinks both 2, 6, 10 and 3, 7, 11 enjoys the best of both worlds.

Inner When to use

Ask: what does the native DO about this matter? Read the bhava through its inner karaka — its strength, dignity and sub-lord. Most relevant for Dharma and Kama bhavas.

Outer When to use

Ask: what HAPPENS to the native around this matter? Read the bhava through its outer karaka — typically the Parashari naisargika lord. Most relevant for Artha and Moksha bhavas.
