Asuras (Demons)
Daityas, danavas and rakshasas — powerful counterparts of the devas. Their amsas mark brilliant technical capacity laced with shadow: ego, illusion, force, loophole-thinking. Several are not "evil" but proud, predatory, or boon-warped.
A note on clans
Daityas are sons of Diti, Danavas sons of Danu (both grouped as asuras). Rakshasas are night-roaming flesh-eaters of a different stock. Astrology treats them all as the "shadow" amsa-lords.
Architects and Illusionists
Counter-craftsmen of the cosmos. Their amsas favour technical brilliance with a twist.
The asura counterpart to Vishwakarma. Built the Tripura cities, the Pandavas' Mayasabha (the hall whose floors looked like water and water like floors), and the original Vimanas. Father of Mandodari (Ravana's queen). Author of the Surya Siddhanta in some traditions.
Kalanemi
कालनेमिSent to delay Hanuman from fetching the Sanjeevani. Took on saintly form to mislead. Killed by Hanuman.
Shumbha and Nishumbha
शुम्भ-निशुम्भBrother demons who conquered the three worlds. Slain by Devi (Durga/Kali) in the Devi Mahatmya.
Warrior-Kings and Tyrants
Boon-fortified rulers, often slain only by a specific avatar or loophole.
Vritra
वृत्रThe cosmic serpent who imprisoned the waters. Slain by Indra with the vajra forged from Dadhichi's bones.
Bali
बलिGrandson of Prahlada. Ruled the three worlds righteously. Pushed to Patala by Vishnu's Vamana avatar after granting three paces of land. A famed devotee.
Hiranyakashipu
हिरण्यकशिपुWon a boon making him almost-immortal. Persecuted his devotee son Prahlada. Killed by Vishnu's Narasimha avatar.
Hiranyaksha
हिरण्याक्षBrother of Hiranyakashipu. Stole the Earth and dragged it to the cosmic ocean. Slain by Vishnu's Varaha avatar.
Ravana
रावणSon of sage Vishrava. Master of the Vedas, Shiva-bhakta, accomplished veena player, ten-headed for ten directions of knowledge. Abducted Sita; slain by Rama.
Kumbhakarna
कुम्भकर्णBrother of Ravana. Cursed (or self-asked) to sleep six months at a stretch. Awoken to fight Rama.
Indrajit / Meghanada
इन्द्रजित्Son of Ravana, defeated Indra. Fought from invisibility using maya and divine astras.
Mahishasura
महिषासुरBuffalo-demon who could not be killed by any male. Slain by Durga after a nine-day battle.
Tarakasura
तारकासुरCould only be slain by a son of Shiva. Killed by Kartikeya. Took over the deva-loka in his prime.
Bhasmasura
भस्मासुरGranted the power to incinerate anyone whose head he touched. Tricked into touching his own head by Mohini.
Andhaka
अन्धकBorn from a drop of Shiva's sweat caught by Parvati. Blind, lustful; eventually purified and made a gana of Shiva.
Banasura
बाणासुरSon of Bali, devotee of Shiva. Fought Krishna over his daughter Usha and Aniruddha. Lost his arms.
Jalandhara
जलन्धरBorn of Shiva's third-eye fire falling into the ocean. Almost invincible while his wife Vrinda was chaste.
Namuchi
नमुचिCould not be killed by anything wet or dry, day or night. Indra slew him with sea-foam at twilight.
Cannibals, Twins and Predators
Trickster-eaters and pair-demons. Threats hidden in care, hospitality, or partnership.
Vatapi and Ilvala
वातापि-इल्वलIlvala turned Vatapi into a goat, fed him to brahmins, then summoned him back from inside their stomachs. Sage Agasthya digested Vatapi, ending the trick.
Madhu and Kaitabha
मधु-कैटभBorn from the wax in Vishnu's ear during cosmic sleep. Slain by Vishnu after a thousand-year fight.
Sundopasunda
सुन्द-उपसुन्दBoon: only one another could kill them. Tilottama was sent; they killed each other over her.
Putana
पूतनाSent by Kamsa to kill infant Krishna by poisoned breast-feeding. Slain by him.
Surpanakha
शूर्पणखाTried to seduce Rama and Lakshmana. Lakshmana cut her nose. Triggered the Lanka war.
Planetary Shadows
Asuras who became grahas. Rahu and Ketu carry their demonic origin into every chart.
Rahu
राहुDrank amrita disguised as a deva; Sun and Moon revealed him; Vishnu severed him. The head became Rahu, the body Ketu. As a graha he obscures, amplifies, and obsesses.
Ketu
केतुThe headless tail of Svarbhanu. Sees without eyes, acts without aim. Karaka of detachment and liberation.
