🕰️ How to Pick a Good Muhurta
A Muhurta is an "elected" moment — you choose when an event starts so the planets are on your side. The doctrine is simple: every moment has a birth chart, and a chart for a wedding / business launch / contract / surgery is born at the moment it starts. Pick the moment whose chart is favourable.
🗺️ The Big Picture

A([Event needs a date/time]) --> B[1️⃣ Type of event → core karaka]
B --> C[2️⃣ Panchanga — five-limbed almanac]
C --> D[3️⃣ Nava-Tara — favourable nakshatras]

Step 1 · 🎯 Identify the Event's Karaka
Every event has a natural significator. Strengthen that planet on the chosen day:
| Event | Karaka(s) to strengthen |
|---|---|
| 💍 Marriage | Venus + Jupiter |
| 🏠 Home / property | Moon + Mars |
| 💼 Business launch | Mercury + Sun + Jupiter |
| 🚀 Career move | Sun + Saturn |
| 📚 Education start | Mercury + Jupiter |
| 🚗 Vehicle purchase | Venus + Moon |
| 🩺 Surgery | Mars (avoid Mars affliction) |
| ✈️ Long journey | Mercury + Jupiter |
The karaka should be strong (own sign, exalted, in kendra/trine) on the chosen day.
Step 2 · 📅 The Panchanga — the Five Limbs

P[Panchanga] --> T[Tithi - lunar day]
P --> V[Vara - weekday]
P --> N[Nakshatra - star]
P --> Y[Yoga - sun-moon combo]
P --> K[Karana - half-tithi]
2a. Tithi (lunar day)
| Tithi class | Days | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| Nanda (joy) | 1, 6, 11 | Great for celebrations, new ventures |
| Bhadra (prosperity) | 2, 7, 12 | Good for wealth, expansion |
| Jaya (victory) | 3, 8, 13 | Great for competition, contests |
| Rikta (empty) | 4, 9, 14 | ❌ AVOID — no growth |
| Purna (full) | 5, 10, 15 | All-rounder, ceremonial |
⛔ Forbidden tithis: Amavasya (new moon, day 30), Krishna Chaturdashi (day 14 of waning).
2b. Vara (weekday)
| Weekday | Lord | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Sun | Authority, government, leadership |
| Monday | Moon | Travel, public-facing, emotional matters |
| Tuesday | Mars | ❌ AVOID for marriage; OK for sport, surgery, conflict resolution |
| Wednesday | Mercury | Business, education, contracts |
| Thursday | Jupiter | ✅ Best for marriage, dharma, teaching, wealth |
| Friday | Venus | ✅ Excellent for marriage, vehicles, luxury |
| Saturday | Saturn | Long-term commitments, real estate, but slow start |
2c. Nakshatra
Each event has friendly and hostile nakshatras. Some universally great ones:
| Nakshatra | Lord | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Rohini | Venus | Marriage, beauty, growth |
| Mrigashira | Mars | Travel, exploration |
| Pushya | Saturn | Wealth, business, blessings (the king of nakshatras for muhurta) |
| Hasta | Moon | Skill-based work, hands-on crafts |
| Anuradha | Saturn | Friendship, devotion |
| Uttara series (Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashada, Uttara Bhadra) | Various | Permanent / unshakeable foundations |
| Revati | Mercury | Travel, ceremony, healing |
⛔ Avoid for marriage: Bharani, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Krittika, Mula, Jyeshtha, Vishakha.
2d. Yoga
Yoga is the combined Sun + Moon longitude divided into 27 segments. 9 of the 27 yogas are inauspicious:
⛔ Avoid: Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shoola, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Parigha.
2e. Karana
Karana = half a tithi. Two are universally bad: Vishti (Bhadra) and Shakuni. Don't start anything important during Bhadra Karana.
Step 3 · 🌟 Nava-Tara — Personalised Nakshatra Wheel
Take the native's birth nakshatra (janma) and count forward through the 27 nakshatras. Every 9 form one tara group, repeating three times.
1. Janma - 🚫 self-care only
2. Sampat - ✅ wealth-attracting
3. Vipat - 🛑 danger - avoid
4. Kshema - ✅ comfort, success
5. Pratyari - 🛑 enemy
6. Sadhaka - ✅ accomplishment - excellent
7. Vadha - 🚫 destructive
8. Mitra - ✅ friendly
9. Ati-Mitra - ✅ best friend
This pattern repeats three times (positions 10–18 and 19–27 mirror 1–9).
Quick lookup
For an important event, pick a date when the transit Moon is in a positive Nava-Tara nakshatra:
- 🌟 Sadhaka, Mitra, Ati-Mitra, Sampat → ✅ excellent
- ⚠️ Janma, Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha → ❌ avoid
Step 4 · 🌅 Choose the Lagna at Event Time
The lagna at the moment the event starts becomes the muhurta chart's lagna. Make sure:
| Property | Why |
|---|---|
| Strong lagna lord in kendra/trine | The event "owns" itself |
| Benefic on lagna (Jupiter / Venus / waxing Moon) | Auspicious launch |
| No malefic on 1H/7H/8H | No immediate adversary |
| Karaka of the event in a kendra/trine | Direct power for the matter |
| Avoid moveable lagna for permanent things | Use fixed signs for marriage, foundations |
| Avoid fixed lagna for temporary things | Use moveable for travel, short ventures |
🧠 PVR insight: "Choose the lagna whose lord is naturally friendly to your event's karaka. Marriage with Venus or Jupiter lagna lord works splendidly."
Step 5 · 🚫 Forbidden Windows

A[Rahu Kalam]:::bad --> X[Avoid for important starts]
B[Yamaganda Kalam]:::bad --> X
C[Gulika Kalam]:::bad --> X
D[Eclipses ±3 days]:::bad --> X
E[Sandhi minutes - sign change]:::bad --> X
F[Bhadra Karana / Vishti]:::bad --> X
G[Amavasya / Krishna Chaturdashi]:::bad --> X
| Window | Why it's bad |
|---|---|
| Rahu Kalam | ~90-minute daily slot ruled by Rahu — illusion, deception |
| Yamaganda | Yama's slot — death-related associations |
| Gulika | Saturn's son — slow rot, hidden issues |
| Eclipses | Sun/Moon obstructed — clarity lost |
| Sandhi | The last 1° / first 1° of any sign — fragile transitions |
| Vishti / Bhadra Karana | Punishment karana |
Step 6 · 👤 Personalise to the Native
A muhurta perfect "in the abstract" can still fail if it clashes with the native's natal chart. Cross-check:
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Transit Moon | Not in 6/8/12 from natal Moon |
| Janma nakshatra | Not the transit nakshatra (= Janma Tara → fragile) |
| Native's running dasa | Mahadasa & antardasa lord aren't violently malefic for the event's house |
| Sade Sati position | Not in peak phase if possible, for major commitments |
| Native's Atmakaraka | If active during the muhurta, plan even more carefully |
🧪 Worked Example — Marriage Muhurta
Suppose the bride's natal Moon is in Pushya (Cancer ~3°).
| Criterion | Target |
|---|---|
| Vara | Thursday or Friday |
| Tithi | Nanda or Bhadra of Shukla paksha (waxing) |
| Nakshatra (transit Moon) | Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashada, Uttara Bhadra, Hasta, Anuradha, Revati |
| Nava-Tara from Pushya | Sadhaka / Mitra / Ati-Mitra / Sampat |
| Karaka | Venus + Jupiter both not combust, not retrograde |
| Lagna | Taurus, Libra (Venus-ruled) or Pisces/Sagittarius (Jupiter-ruled) — fixed/dual preferred |
| Avoid | Tuesday, Mars on lagna, eclipses, Rahu Kalam, Amavasya |
A senior muhurta-maker might still tweak ±15 minutes to fix the rising degree into a benefic-occupied nakshatra pada.

🚫 Common Pitfalls
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Using only the Tithi & Vara | All five panchanga limbs matter |
| Ignoring the transit Moon's nakshatra | Moon = mind; you literally launch into that mental state |
| Forgetting the rising lagna | The muhurta is the chart's lagna |
| Picking a great muhurta clashing with native's dasa | Always cross-check the native's running dasa |
| Holding the event during Rahu Kalam to "save time" | Don't — even small windows of malefic time leak failure |
| Marrying on a Tuesday for "convenience" | Tuesday's lord = Mars; classically destructive for marriage |
📜 Special Notes
- 🌟 For business launches, prefer Pushya nakshatra + Wednesday/Thursday + Vrishabha / Tula / Kanya lagna.
- 🏥 For surgery, don't avoid Mars — but ensure Mars isn't on the 1H/8H/12H of the muhurta chart.
- 🚀 For long journeys, Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday are good; avoid Saturday.
