🎯 How to Use Sahamas
Sahamas are computed sensitive degrees in the zodiac — Vedic cousins of the Arabic Parts / Lots. They aren't planets, they aren't houses; they're derived points that focus an entire life-matter onto a single degree. Treat them like SLO calculations: a precise numeric threshold that summarises a lot of information.
🧮 What Is a Sahama?
Sahama = (Sender + Receiver − Trigger) mod 360°
Each Sahama uses a different recipe of three positions — usually two planets and the lagna. The formula's order flips between day birth (Sun above the horizon) and night birth (Sun below).
💡 Why three points? A Sahama is the resonant degree where the significator, the destination, and the activator meet. Activate any one of those three and the Sahama lights up.

| Sahama | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Karya / Karya-Karya | The major life undertaking |
| Vivaha | Marriage |
| Putra | Children |
| Paradesha | Foreign land, foreign people |
| Jalapatana | Crossing waters, long sea/air journeys |
| Punya | Merit, dharma, virtue |
| Raja | Royalty, status, power |
| Para-Dara | Other partners / clandestine relations |
| Apamrityu | Accident-prone moment, unnatural death risk |
📜 There are 50+ Sahamas in classical literature. The list above is the practical short-list that astrologers actually use.
🔧 How to Apply a Sahama — 5 Step Recipe
flowchart TD
A[Step 1 · Compute Sahama's zodiacal degree] --> B[Step 2 · Note its sign and house]
B --> C[Step 3 · Find the Sahama's sign-lord]
C --> D[Step 4 · Check planets within ~15' of the Sahama degree]
D --> E[Step 5 · Read transits, dasas & TP activation]
Step 1 · Compute the degree
Your software does this. The result is a longitude in 0°–360°.
Step 2 · Sign & house placement
Project the Sahama into the natal D1:
- ✅ In the relevant house = strong (e.g. Vivaha in 7H, Putra in 5H, Paradesha in 9H/12H)
- ⚠️ In a hostile house = weak (e.g. Vivaha in 6H/8H — marital friction)
- 🛑 In the Bhadhakasthana = forced/inevitable activation
Step 3 · The Sahama lord
The lord of the Sahama's sign is the Sahama's spokesperson. When this lord's dasa runs, the Sahama becomes a live wire.
| Sahama lord condition | Activation strength |
|---|---|
| Exalted / own sign / dignified | 🔥 Strong delivery |
| Combust / debilitated | 💤 Weak delivery |
| In trine to the Sahama itself | ⚡ Direct support |
| Aspected by natural karaka | ⭐ Reinforced |
Step 4 · Tight conjunctions
Within ~15 arc-minutes of the Sahama degree = a planet is sitting on top of the Sahama:
- 🌟 Natural karaka there → near-guaranteed activation
- ⚠️ Malefic there → can deliver the event with friction or hardship
- 🌑 Rahu/Ketu within tight orb → unconventional or fated activation
💡 Real example: Native had Rahu within 11 arc-minutes of Jalapatana Sahama → guaranteed sea-crossing in life. He did permanently emigrate.
Step 5 · Timing — dasas, transits, TP
- Dasa of the Sahama lord → primary activation window
- Transit of a benefic over the Sahama degree → fine-tunes timing within the dasa
- Tithi Pravesha (annual chart) → recompute the Sahama for that year; check year-lord overlap
🪟 Reading the Sahama in Context
A Sahama by itself proves nothing. Stack it with classical indicators:
flowchart TD
classDef sig fill:#dbeafe,stroke:#3b82f6;
A[House Lord active]:::sig --> X([Convergence])
B[Natural Karaka active]:::sig --> X
C[Sahama active]:::sig --> X
D[Dasa lord supports]:::sig --> X
X --> Y([Event near-certain])
🧠 The convergence rule: No single indicator predicts. Three independent classical signals firing in the same dasa window = high-confidence prediction.
🧪 Worked Examples
Example 1 — Foreign Migration
| Layer | Finding |
|---|---|
| 7-9-12 triangle | 12L in 9H + 9L in 7H |
| Karakas | Rahu in 9H; Saturn = 7L |
| Sahama | Paradesha in 12H; Jalapatana in Bhadhakasthana |
| Tight contact | Rahu within ~10' of Jalapatana |
| Dasa | Rahu MD running; Saturn antardasa |
→ ✅ Travel + permanent settlement confirmed. (And it happened.)
Example 2 — Marriage Year
| Layer | Finding |
|---|---|
| 7L | Moon in 9H (trikona — well-placed) |
| Karaka | Venus exalted in 5H |
| Sahama | Vivaha in Taurus (Venus-ruled, same sign as Venus) |
| TP year | Year-Lord = Venus; aspects Vivaha Sahama |
| Dasa | Rahu-Saturn-Moon-Venus running |
→ ✅ Three independent timers (Venus + 7L + Vivaha lord) all converging in one antardasa window. Marriage occurred within ±10 days of the computed peak.
🚦 Practical Cheat Sheet
| You want to time… | Use this Sahama (primary) | Plus this confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage | Vivaha | 7L, Venus/Jupiter, UL lord, DK |
| Children | Putra | 5L, Jupiter, PK |
| Foreign travel | Paradesha + Jalapatana | 7L/9L/12L, Rahu, Saturn |
| Big undertaking | Karya / Karya-Karya | Lagna lord, AK, current dasa |
| Status / promotion | Raja | 10L, Sun, AmK |
| Accidents | Apamrityu | 8L, malefics on lagna, Saturn-Mars conjunctions |
🚫 Common Pitfalls
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Treating Sahama alone as proof | Always stack with house lord, karaka, dasa |
| Using natal-only Sahamas for annual events | Recompute Sahamas in the TP chart for that year |
| Ignoring day/night formula difference | Sun above/below horizon flips the sign in the formula |
| Reading the Sahama position but not its lord | The Sahama lord's dasa is the actual timer |
| Loose orbs | Tight (≤15') contacts are dramatically stronger than wide ones |
🛠️ Where to Compute Them
In the AstroSK engine, Sahamas are calculated by the Sahama module of the predictions engine. JHora (Jagannatha Hora), Parashara's Light, and Kala all expose Sahama tables in their output panels.
