Sarvatobhadra Chakra (सर्वतोभद्र चक्र)
Sarvatobhadra Chakra (SBC) — literally "entirely auspicious diagram" — is one of Vedic astrology's most comprehensive transit analysis tools. It is a 9×9 = 81 cell square grid that simultaneously contains five astrological layers: 28 nakshatras, 12 zodiac signs, 30 tithis (5 groups), 7 weekdays, and 50 Sanskrit aksharas (letters).
The name comes from Sarva (all/entire) + Bhadra (auspiciousness/well-being). Its classical source is the Brahma Yamal Grantha, with detailed construction rules in Gopesh Kumar Ojha's commentary on Mantreswara's Phaladeepika, chapter 26.

The 5 Layers of the Grid
The 9×9 grid is built in 5 concentric rectangular layers, from outermost to innermost:
| Layer | Contents | Cells | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — Nakshatra Ring | 28 nakshatras + 4 corner vowels | 32 (outer border) | The 4 sides × 7 middle cells = 28 nakshatras; 4 corner cells hold vowels (a, aa, i, ii) |
| 2 & 3 — Akshara Rings | Sanskrit consonants & vowels | 24 | 7×7 outer minus 5×5 inner; corner cells of 7×7 ring hold vowels (u, uu, ri, rii) |
| 4 — Rasi Ring | 12 zodiac signs + 4 corner vowels | 16 | 4 sides × 3 cells each = 12 signs; corners hold vowels (o, au, am, ah) |
| 5 — Tithi/Vara Center | 5 tithi groups + 7 weekdays | 9 | 3×3 center: 4 sides × 1 cell + 4 corners + 1 center cell (Poorna/Saturday) |
Layer 1 — Nakshatra Ring
Nakshatra placement proceeds clockwise from the NE corner in Krittikadi order. The 4 corner cells hold Sanskrit vowels; the 28 side cells hold the nakshatras.

Vedha — The Piercing Influence
Vedha is the core mechanism of SBC. A transiting planet in a nakshatra cell "pierces" (influences) other cells in 3 directions simultaneously.
1. Across Vedha (most important)
Straight line across: the cell directly opposite on the same row or column. Most effective when the planet is stationary or in normal motion.
2. Fore Vedha (forward diagonal)
The diagonal in the clockwise (zodiacal) direction. More effective when the planet is moving fast. Always active for Sun and Moon (always direct).
3. Hind Vedha (backward diagonal)
The diagonal in the anti-clockwise direction. More effective when the planet is retrograde. Always active for Rahu and Ketu (always retrograde).
Vedha Strength Multipliers
| Condition | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Exaltation | 3× |
| Retrograde | 2× |
| Normal motion | 1× |
| Debilitation | 0.5× |
Special Corner Vedha
When a planet is in the last pada of Bharani, Ashlesha, Vishakha, or Shravana OR the first pada of Krittika, Magha, Anuradha, or Dhanishtha, it additionally vedhas the entire diagonal crossing the Poorna Tithi and all vowels in the adjacent corner. This is the most powerful form of vedha.
Severity Scale
When multiple planets simultaneously vedha the same nakshatra, the effects compound:
| Vedha Count | Result |
|---|---|
| 1 vedha | Conflict, misunderstanding |
| 2 vedhas | Loss of wealth |
| 3 vedhas | Defeat, failure, illness |
| 4 vedhas | Death or life-threatening event |
When ALL FIVE elements (nakshatra + akshara + swara + tithi + rasi) simultaneously suffer vedha → death is certain (classical rule).
Key Nakshatras From Moon (Shannadi Group)
The right-side panel in JHora shows two reference columns: From Moon and From Lagna. Each nakshatra type has special significance when vedha'd by malefic transits.
| # | Nakshatra Type | From Moon (offset) | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Janma | 1st | Core self, health, life force |
| 2 | Karma | 10th | Work, career, resources |
| 3 | Samudayika | 18th | Environment, support system |
| 4 | Sanghatika | 16th | Danger, risks |
| 5 | Jaati | 26th | Community, family, relationships |
| 6 | Naidhana | 23rd | Death, destruction |
| 7 | Desa | 27th | Country, government |
| 8 | Abhisheka | 28th | Coronation, leadership, power |
| 9 | Aadhaana | 19th | Conception, place of activity |
| 10 | Vainasika | 23rd | Destruction, trouble |
| 11 | Maanasa | 25th | Mental state, peace of mind |
From Lagna gives the same categories but counted from the Ascendant's nakshatra — useful for physical/health matters vs. mind/environment matters.
Trishula Nakshatras (From Sun — longevity): Counted from Sun's nakshatra: 1st, 9th, 15th, 21st — critical for death/longevity analysis.
Effect of Each Planet's Vedha
| Planet | Nature | Vedha Effect on Nakshatra |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Malefic | Grief, ego conflicts |
| Moon | Benefic/Malefic | Comfort (strong) or trouble (weak) |
| Mars | Malefic | Loss of wealth |
| Mercury | Mixed | Learning, efficiency at work |
| Jupiter | Benefic | Prosperity, wellbeing, gains |
| Venus | Benefic | Entertainment, pleasure; fear from foes |
| Saturn | Malefic | Sickness, suffering |
| Rahu | Malefic | Deception, cheating |
| Ketu | Malefic | Accidents, sudden events |
Moon's status: Strong Moon (Shukla Dvitiya to Shukla Ashtami, and Krishna Ashtami to Krishna Trayodashi) = mild benefic. Dark Moon (Krishna Chaturdasi to Shukla Pratipada) = malefic.
Effect of Vedha on Different Elements
When a planet vedhas a cell, every element in that cell is affected:
| Element | Domain Governed | Effect of Malefic Vedha |
|---|---|---|
| Nakshatra | Core life area of that nakshatra type | Primary danger/blessing |
| Vara (weekday) | Health, life force | Health problems |
| Akshara (letter) | Native's name/image | Reputation suffers |
| Tithi | Finances, comfort | Financial trouble, discomfort |
| Rasi (sign) | Resources from nature | Blocked resources; related house suffers |
Using SBC with Dasha Analysis
SBC does not work in isolation. Events materialize only when all of the following conditions align:
- The running Mahadasha/Antardasha lords are involved in inauspicious yogas in the natal chart
- AND those same planets are simultaneously causing vedha to vital nakshatras in SBC
- AND the Tajaka/TP annual chart also shows the event
Practical Workflow
- Identify running dasha lords
- Locate them in SBC based on their current transit nakshatra
- Check which vital nakshatras (Janma, Karma, etc.) they are vedha-ing
- Count the number of malefics simultaneously vedha-ing the same vital nakshatra
- Correlate with annual chart and natal promise
