Planetary Strengths — Complete Explainer

Shadbala, Ashtakavarga, Vimsopaka, Vaiseshikamsa, Yogas & Bar Graphs

Part 1 — Overview: Why Strengths Matter

In Vedic astrology, a planet's placement (sign, house) is only half the story. Two charts can have Jupiter in the 5th house, yet one person excels academically while another underperforms. The difference is planetary strength — how much power a planet has to deliver its significations. Strength systems answer: Can this planet actually fulfill its promise?

The six complementary strength systems:

1

Ashtakavarga

Benefic point grid (transit & natal support)

2

Shadbala

Six-fold inherent strength (positional, directional, temporal, etc.)

3

Vimsopaka Bala

Divisional chart placement quality (out of 20)

4

Vaiseshikamsa

Count of excellent divisional placements

5

Yogas

Identified planetary combinations and their results

6

Bar Graphs

Part 2 — Ashtakavarga

2.1 What Is It?

Ashtakavarga ("eight divisions") is a system where 8 sources (7 planets + Ascendant) each vote benefic (1) or malefic (0) on each of the 12 signs, for each of the 7 planets. The result is a numerical grid showing how supported each planet is in each sign.

2.2 Two Layers

Bhinna Ashtakavarga (BAV)

Individual planet grid

  • For each of the 7 planets (Sun–Saturn), shows how many of the 8 sources contribute a benefic point to each of the 12 signs
  • Each sign gets 0–8 points per planet
  • Displayed as a grid: planet rows × 12-sign columns

Sarva Ashtakavarga (SAV)

Combined grid

  • Sum of all 7 planets' BAV scores for each house/sign
  • Total across all 12 signs is always 337 (a cosmic constant)
  • Average per house = 337/12 ≈ 28

2.3 Reading the BAV Grid

The grid shows the BAV for the D-1 (Rasi) chart with reference to Aries (standard Parashari method):

Row 1: SAV totals per sign
Row 2: Sun's BAV per sign
Row 3: Moon's BAV
... etc.
Highlighted cells = signs where planets are placed in D-1
  • Numbers 0–8 in each cell = benefic bindus for that planet in that sign
  • The label "SAV" with numbers shows Sarva scores per house
  • As = Ascendant placement highlighted

2.4 BAV Score Interpretation Thresholds

BAV Score (per planet per sign)Interpretation
0Severe difficulty
1–2Losses, misery, enemies
3Mixed — unhappy balance
4Average — equal good and bad
5Overcoming barriers, adaptation
6Productive — effort yields results
7Material comforts, surrounded by loved ones
8Exceptional — wealth, fame, luxury

The bar graphs provide an at-a-glance view of which planets are strong vs. weak across all systems simultaneously.

Other Strength Systems

Shadbala (Six-fold Strength)

Measures a planet's inherent power across six dimensions: positional (Sthana), directional (Dik), temporal (Kala), motional (Cheshta), natural (Naisargika), and aspectual (Drig) strength. The planet with the highest Shadbala dominates when multiple planets influence the same house or yoga.

Vimsopaka Bala

Rates a planet's overall dignity across all divisional (Varga) charts on a scale of 0–20. High Vimsopaka indicates a planet placed well across multiple life areas, able to deliver its significations in a holistic sense — not just in one chart.

Vaiseshikamsa

Counts how many divisional charts place a planet in its own sign, exaltation, or other positions of exceptional dignity. A high Vaiseshikamsa count indicates outstanding overall planetary strength — the planet excels across the board.

Bar Graphs

A visual tool that displays all strength systems side by side for each planet. Bar graphs allow quick identification of which planets are strong or weak across Shadbala, Vimsopaka Bala, Vaiseshikamsa, and Ashtakavarga simultaneously.

Part 3 — How to Use These Strengths Together

Step 1

Identify the running dasha planet.

Is it strong or weak in Shadbala?

Step 2

Check Vimsopaka Bala (Dasa Varga).

High Vimsopaka = planet placed well across divisional charts = can deliver its significations.

Step 3

Check Ashtakavarga.

High BAV in natal sign = strong support from other planets for that planet's results.

Step 4

Check Vaiseshikamsa.

High count = planet in own/exalted in many charts = exceptional dignity across the board.

Step 5

Check Yogas.

Are the running planets involved in Raja Yogas, Dhana Yogas, or Viparita Raja Yogas? This determines the quality of results.

Step 6

Cross-reference with transit BAV.

When the dasha planet transits a sign with high BAV in Sarva Ashtakavarga, events will crystallize.
