Tajaka Dasas

Tajaka uses its own set of annual timing systems (dasas) that operate exclusively within the 365-day period of the Solar Return chart. These dasas divide the year into sub-periods assigned to planets or signs, allowing the astrologer to pinpoint when specific themes and events will manifest during the year.

The three main Tajaka dasas available in jHora are Mudda Dasa (planet-based, proportional), Narayana Dasa (sign-based), and Patyayini Dasa (planet-based, strength-ordered).

Mudda Dasa — The Primary Tajaka Timing System

Mudda Dasa is the most commonly used timing method in Tajaka and is recommended as the first dasa to run when making annual predictions.

How It Works

  • The full Tajaka year (365 days) is divided among all 9 planets
  • Each planet's share of the year is proportional to its Harsha Bala strength score
  • The planet with the highest Harsha Bala score rules the first and longest period
  • The sequence proceeds from the strongest planet to the weakest
  • The total of all planetary periods always equals exactly 365 days

What to Look For

  • When a Powerful planet (high Pancha-vargeeya Bala) runs its Mudda period, its significations are at maximum expression
  • When a planet forming a key Tajaka yoga runs its Mudda period, the yoga results manifest most clearly
  • Mudda periods of malefic planets (especially with high KashtaPhala) often coincide with challenging months
  • The Mudda Dasa of the Varshesh (Year Lord) is typically the most significant period of the year

Example Calculation

If Venus has a Harsha Bala of 18 out of 20 (90%), and the total of all planetary Harsha Bala scores is 100 points, Venus receives 18% of 365 days ≈ 66 days. The planet with the lowest score might receive only a few days. This proportional weighting ensures the strongest planets dominate the annual timeline.

Narayana Dasa (Tajaka Version)

The Tajaka version of Narayana Dasa is a sign-based annual dasa that progresses through the rasis of the Tajaka chart, identifying which houses and life areas are activated month by month.

Key Features

  • The dasa sequence begins from a specific house in the Tajaka chart
  • Each sign/house receives a period proportional to its classical dasa length
  • The activated house highlights the life domain most prominent in that sub-period
  • Planets placed in or aspecting the active dasa sign become the period's key players

How to Use It

  • Identify the active dasa sign for the time period of interest
  • Note the house number of that sign in the Tajaka chart
  • Read the significations of that house for the year's context
  • Check if any strong or yoga-forming planets are placed in or aspect the active sign

Patyayini Dasa

Patyayini Dasa is another planet-based Tajaka annual dasa with different calculation rules from Mudda Dasa.

Key Features

  • Uses planetary positions in the Tajaka chart to determine the sequence
  • Period lengths are based on planetary strengths, but under a different formula than Mudda Dasa
  • Provides an alternative monthly breakdown that can be cross-checked with Mudda Dasa
  • Particularly useful as a secondary timing check when Mudda Dasa results are ambiguous

When to Use Patyayini

  • As a secondary dasa to confirm or refine Mudda Dasa predictions
  • When multiple possible timings exist for an event and a tiebreaker is needed
  • As a double-check in years where Mudda Dasa produces contradictory sub-periods

Practical Workflow — Using Tajaka Dasas

  1. Run Mudda Dasa first — identify the major planetary sub-periods for the year and note which months are governed by strong/weak or benefic/malefic planets.
  2. Cross-reference with Pancha-vargeeya Bala — Powerful planets in their Mudda period deliver the year's most important events.
  3. Overlay with Tajaka Yogas — when a Mudda Dasa planet is also a yoga-giver, the yoga's result manifests during that planetary period.
  4. Check Narayana Dasa for house themes — the sign/house activated by Narayana Dasa at the same time as a prominent Mudda Dasa planet creates a convergence of timing signals.
  5. Verify with Patyayini Dasa — if Mudda and Narayana both point to the same month, the event timing is confirmed. Patyayini agreement further strengthens the prediction.
