Muhurtha (Electional Astrology)

Muhurtha is the branch of Jyotish that picks an auspicious moment to begin a particular activity — marriage, joining a job, starting a business, laying a foundation stone, beginning medication. The principle is simple: a chart cast for the moment of beginning carries the destiny of that endeavor, just as a birth chart carries the destiny of a person. Muhurtha selects the moment whose chart best supports the activity in question.

A muhurtha is chosen for a specific event. The same muhurtha is not suitable for all events — the five panchanga elements you weight depend on what the activity needs.

The Five Panchanga Elements and their Tatwas

ElementTatwaShows
Tithi (lunar day)Jala (water)Prosperity, well-being, happiness, wealth.
Vara (weekday)Agni (fire)Vitality, life-force, longevity. Strength of the Varesha (weekday lord) is decisive.
Nakshatra (lunar mansion)Vayu (air)Strength and the proper utilization of strength. Too strong vayu can damage the venture; too weak shows lack of force.
YogaAkasha (ether)The binding force that holds the other four elements together. No specific form, but without it the venture fragments.
Karana (half-tithi)Bhu (earth)Achievement, the tangible delivery of results. Some karanas (e.g. Garija) are auspicious; others (e.g. the four fixed karanas) are not.
Beyond checking that the element is "good," verify the strength of the lord of that element in the muhurtha chart. Garija karana is auspicious — but its full benefit comes only if Jupiter is well placed at the chosen moment.

Picking Which Element Matters Most

All five rarely line up well at the same time. Choose the muhurtha so that the elements that matter for this activity are strong:

  • Marriage: emphasize Yoga, Vara and Karana. Tara and Nakshatra of the bride and groom are also crucial.
  • Starting medication: emphasize Tithi (well-being) and a strong Nakshatra + Yoga (effectiveness with binding strength).
  • Joining a new job: pick a planet auspicious to the 10th house or aspecting the 10th lord; let the Hora lord be that planet.
  • Buying or laying foundation for a house: support 4th and 3rd houses; check Hora lord's D-4 placement.
  • Recovery from illness: emphasize Tithi (well-being) and Mrutyunjaya-style protective combinations on the lagna.

Tara — The Nine-fold Lunar Cycle

There are nine Taras counted from the Moon (the natal Janma Nakshatra). Each successive nakshatra is a step in the cycle, which repeats three times to cover all 27 nakshatras:

TaraPosition from Janma NakshatraGeneral nature
1. Janma1, 10, 19Mixed — protect by praying Janma Nakshatra deity.
2. Sampat2, 11, 20Wealth — auspicious for finance.
3. Vipat3, 12, 21Danger — avoid for new beginnings.
4. Kshema4, 13, 22Prosperity, well-being — auspicious.
5. Pratyak5, 14, 23Obstruction — avoid.
6. Sadhaka6, 15, 24Accomplishment — auspicious.
7. Vadha7, 16, 25Slaughter — strongly avoid.
8. Mitra8, 17, 26Friend — auspicious.
9. Ati-Mitra9, 18, 27Best friend — auspicious.

Karma Tara (10th from Janma Nakshatra) shows how the native applies the mind to work; for career problems, propitiate the Karma Nakshatra. Manasa Nakshatra is propitiated for mental peace. Abhisheka Nakshatra is used for installation / power events (e.g. winning an election).

Hora and Kaala

The day-and-night span (sunrise to sunrise) is divided into 24 horas of one hour each, and into 16 kaalas of one-and-a-half hours each. The hora lord is found by counting from the weekday's planet in the order: Sa → Ju → Ma → Su → Ve → Me → Mo → Sa…

  • Kaala tells you the kind of activity that suits this slot in general — Surya Kaala for dharmic work, Chandra Kaala for socializing and reading literature, Guru Kaala for studying scripture, Sukra Kaala for entertainment and romance, Mars Kaala for fight or competition, Mercury Kaala for scholarly work and writing, Saturn Kaala for sadhana, tapas and disciplined labour, Rahu Kaala for puja and meditation.
  • Hora is specific to a chart — the Hora lord acts as king of that activity. For joining a job, choose a hora whose lord supports your 10th house. For marriage, choose a hora lord supporting the 7th and UL.
  • Day-strong rasis: Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Aq, Pi. Night-strong rasis: Ar, Ta, Ge, Cn, Sg, Cp.
  • Approximate noon (when Sun is in the 10th from the local lagna) is Abhijit Muhurtha — universally good when nothing else can be arranged.
  • Stay away from Ghantika and Gulika kaalam — these are inauspicious sub-divisions of the day.
  • Use Maha Kaala for Prasna (horary) but not for Muhurtha — for Muhurtha use the actual Hora based on local sunrise.

Reading the Muhurtha Chart Itself

The chart cast for the muhurtha moment is read like any natal chart, with emphasis on:

  • A clean lagna — no malefic afflicting the lagna or lagna lord.
  • The house of the activity strong (10th for career, 7th for marriage, 4th for property, 5th for children).
  • Hora lord well placed in the muhurtha chart and connected to the activity's significator.
  • If everything else aligns and the Sun is in the 10th house at exactly the same degree-minute-second of significance, the moment is exceptionally auspicious.
Reference: Dr. B.V. Raman's Muhurtha — Electional Astrology is the standard reference. Any good Panchangam contains the Tara, Tithi, Yoga, Karana and Nakshatra tables you need to do the lookups manually.

A practical muhurtha workflow: (1) decide which 1–2 panchanga elements matter most for the event; (2) scan the panchangam for days when those elements are best; (3) inside those days, find a hora whose lord supports the activity's primary house; (4) draw the chart for that exact moment and verify the lagna and the activity's significator are clean; (5) cross-check with the native's natal chart so the muhurtha doesn't conflict with a poor running dasa.
