Shodasamsa (D-16) — Vehicles, Conveyances, Comforts

The Shodasamsa, or Kalamsa, is the divisional chart obtained by dividing each rasi into 16 equal parts of 1°52'30". It is read for vehicles, conveyances, and the general bodily comforts and luxuries that come from external means of transport — and, by extension, for accidents and damage to those vehicles. It is one of the Shodasa Vargas (the 16-fold scheme stressed especially in royal horoscopy) and is ruled by the Moon, the karaka of the 16 kalas.

Significations

  • Vehicles and conveyances — cars, two-wheelers, animals used for transport, and any external means by which the body is carried.
  • Comforts (sukha) derived from those vehicles and from luxuries of the home — overlap with the 4th-house signification but read at a finer grain.
  • Vehicular accidents — the chart shows whether an accident comes from the native's own vehicle vs. external impact.
  • General mental comfort attached to material possessions, since Moon (mind) governs the 16-part division.

Reading Vehicular Trouble

Layer D-16 with the 6th and 8th house tatwas of the natal chart and with D-6 (Shashtamsa) when probing accidents:

  1. Note where the 6th lord and 8th lord of D-16 sit. Strong negative indication if both are afflicted in malefic houses.
  2. Check planets in MKS (marana karaka sthana) in D-16. A natural longevity-giver (e.g. Venus for vehicles) becoming a maraka by being in 2nd or 7th makes the vehicle dangerous to its owner.
  3. Cross-check with D-6 — vehicular events that involve the native's body show up in both D-16 (the vehicle) and D-6 (the bodily harm).
  4. If D-16 shows no strong indication of own-vehicle damage but D-6 / D-30 indicate accident, it is likely an external impact (another vehicle hit the native), not a self-caused crash.
Worked example from Lesson #49: for the native of Oct 22 1943, in D-16 the 6th lord was in the 3rd and the 8th lord in the 2nd, with no strong indication of own-vehicle problem. Combined with D-6 and D-30 indications, the verdict was an accident caused by another vehicle hitting him — confirmed by the family.

D-16 Within the Shodasa Varga Scheme

D-16 is part of the Shodasa Varga (16 divisional charts) used especially for royal horoscopy. PVR's note: use the full Shodasa Varga set — including D-40 and D-45 — for kings, queens and princes. The karma of a ruler affects generations to come, so the deeper varga set is appropriate. For ordinary natives the Shadvarga or Saptavarga set is sufficient and D-16 is consulted only when vehicle, conveyance or luxury-comfort questions arise.

Quick Reading Checklist

  • D-16 lagna lord placement → general health of vehicles owned.
  • 4th house and 4th lord of D-16 → comfort derived from those vehicles.
  • Venus in D-16 → karaka for vehicles in general; afflicted Venus warns of vehicle loss or accidents.
  • Mars in D-16 → karaka for engines and mechanical vehicles; afflicted Mars warns of mechanical failure.
  • 8th house and 8th lord of D-16 with malefic affliction → sudden vehicle damage or theft.
  • 12th house and 12th lord of D-16 → loss / sale / displacement of vehicle.

D-16 is one of the more specialized vargas — for most charts it is consulted only when the question explicitly involves a vehicle, conveyance or major comfort purchase. Read it together with D-6 (health, accidents) and D-4 (immovable assets) to get the full picture of what is happening to the native's material body and the objects that move it through the world.
