The Dasa Hierarchy — Nested Time-Plans
Vimshottari and most other dasa systems are nested time-windows: a Mahadasa contains nine Antardasas, each Antardasa contains nine Pratyantardasas, and so on through Sookshma and Prana. Five levels of zoom on a single life. The temporal axis schedules everything else in the chart.
Pick the level that matches the granularity of the question.
The Five Levels
| Level | Vimshottari name | Span | Real-world equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mahadasa | 6–20 years | A chapter of life — childhood, the working years, the elder years. |
| 2 | Antardasa | ~3 mo – 3 yr | The current concern — this year's harvest, the wedding season, the building of the house. |
| 3 | Pratyantardasa | weeks – 6 mo | This month's task — sowing, planning the function, hiring labour. |
| 4 | Sookshma | hours – days | Today's work — the day of the muhurtha, the morning of the journey. |
| 5 | Prana | minutes | This very moment — the instant the priest pours the homa-ghee, the moment the foundation stone is laid. |
Why Events Need Multi-Level Agreement
A specific event fires when three nested levels point to the same house — by ownership, occupancy or aspect.
The era of life supports the matter (Mahadasa); this year is the right year (Antardasa); this season is the right season (Pratyantardasa). When all three agree, the wedding happens, the child is born, the house is built. If only the era is right but the year is wrong, the matter waits. If only the year is right but the season is unfavourable, the matter is postponed.
How to Read at the Right Level
- "Will I marry in this lifetime?" → Mahadasa. Which 6–20 year chapter wakes Venus and the 7th house?
- "In the next two years?" → Antardasa. Inside the active Mahadasa, which Antardasa lights up the 7th and Venus?
- "Which month?" → Pratyantardasa + Sookshma.
- "In the next half-hour?" → Prana / muhurtha / horary.
Cross-Cutting Concerns
- Transits modulate the running dasa from outside — they don't override it. Saturn ingressing the 10th can compress or stretch the dasa's outcomes.
- Annual Tithi Pravesha is the year's plan-on-a-page. Read alongside the running dasa.
- Conditional dasas (Narayana, Drig, Sudasa, Niryana Shoola, Tribhagi Vimshottari, etc.) are specialized planning frameworks for specific domains — pick the dasa whose method fits the question.
- Ashtakavarga bindus of the dasa lord act as a confidence score for the period's promised events.
The static chart says what can happen. The dasa hierarchy says when, at which scale of detail. Pick the level that matches the granularity of the question; read three levels of nesting before committing to a prediction.
