Using Jagannatha Hora (jHora) for Tithi Pravesha

Jagannatha Hora (jHora), developed by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao, is widely considered the gold standard software for Tithi Pravesha calculations. This guide walks through generating the TP chart, setting up the correct Dasas, and the key factors to analyse for predictions.

Step 1 — Generating the TP Chart

  1. Open your Natal Chart: Input the native's birth details to cast the standard Rasi chart.
  2. Navigate to the TP Tab: At the bottom (or top) of the main screen, look for the tab labelled Tithi Pravesha or Annual TP.
  3. Calculate for the Year: In the Tithi Pravesha window, enter the calendar year you want to analyse. Click "Calculate" — jHora will automatically find the exact luni-solar return moment and cast the new chart.
Use "Set Calculation Options as recommended by author" (found under the Preferences menu in jHora) and select Pushya-paksha ayanamsa for accurate TP calculations.

Step 2 — Setting Up the Dasas

Because a Tithi Pravesha chart is only valid for one year, you cannot use the standard 120-year Vimsottari Dasa. You must use Dasas compressed for annual charts.

  1. Go to the Dasas Tab: Click on the "Dasas" tab in the bottom half of the jHora screen.
  2. Select Tithi Ashtottari Dasa: Right-click anywhere inside the Dasa window to bring up the menu of different Dasa systems.
  3. Choose Tithi Ashtottari Dasa of Janma tithi. The software often notes this is "useful especially in Tithi Pravesha charts".
  4. Optional — Annual Narayana Dasa: Also check annual Narayana Dasa for seeing the progression of physical circumstances and environment month by month.

Why Tithi Ashtottari Dasa?

Tradition and modern research by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao and Sanjay Rath heavily favour Tithi Ashtottari Dasa for TP charts. It compresses a 108-part cycle into a single year, providing highly accurate micro-timing within the annual chart.

Step 3 — Key Factors for Predictions

A TP chart is read similarly to a natal chart but its scope is strictly confined to one year. Analyse these factors in order of importance:

1. The Hora Lord ("Year Boss")

The ruler of the planetary hour at the exact TP moment. It sets the primary agenda and focus for the entire year. Look at where the Hora Lord sits in the TP chart — its house placement reveals the year's dominant theme. Afflicted = struggles in that area; well-placed = immense success.

2. The Vaara Lord (Weekday Lord)

The ruling planet of the Vedic weekday on which the TP falls. Provides the overarching theme and energy for the year. Crucially, look at where the Vaara Lord sits in the natal chart (D-1), not the TP chart — this channels the year's energy through your natal destiny.

3. The TP Lagna (Ascendant)

The rising sign of the TP chart tells you how the year's energy interfaces with your natal life. Compare it to your natal lagna: if your natal lagna is Aries and your TP lagna is Capricorn (your natal 10th house), the physical focus of the year is drawn toward career matters.

4. Divisional Charts (Vargas)

The TP chart is an independent entity — you can open its divisional charts in jHora. Check the Hora Lord in D-10 for career events. Check D-9 for relationship themes. A strong Hora Lord in TP D-9 indicates marriage or significant relationship developments.

Step 4 — Timing with Tithi Ashtottari Dasa

Once you know what will happen by analysing the planets, use the Dasa to determine when it will happen during the year.

  • If the Hora Lord is Jupiter, the major events will peak during Jupiter's Maha Dasa or Antardasa within the Tithi Ashtottari sequence.
  • If the 6th house is highly activated (indicating debts, diseases, or obstacles), those themes will manifest when the Dasa of the 6th lord runs.
  • Annual Narayana Dasa (also available in jHora) is excellent for tracking the progression of physical circumstances and environment across the year's months.
