🔭 Graha Drishti Review
Quick recap: Every planet aspects the 7th house from its position because the 7th = the planet's desire, and Graha Drishti = what the planet wants to do.
[!IMPORTANT] When Does Graha Drishti Manifest? Graha Drishti expresses in a specific Dasha/Antardasha — not throughout life. The planet wants to do something; when its time comes, it acts. Unlike Rasi Drishti, it is not a permanent, always-on influence.
The use of Dasha timing: each person's life is divided into Dashas (main periods), Antardashas (sub-periods), and Pratyantar Dashas (sub-sub-periods). A planet's desire (Graha Drishti) is fulfilled when its Dasha comes.
🐉 Rahu/Ketu Relationships Clarified
PVR's final position on Rahu/Ketu relationships:
Use Saturn's natural relationship table for both Rahu and Ketu. Whoever is Saturn's friend is Rahu and Ketu's friend. Whoever is Saturn's enemy is their enemy.
This is supported by:
- The Ashtottara Namastotra of both Rahu and Ketu calls them Manda Sakha (friend of Saturn)
- Saturn co-owns Aquarius with Rahu; Mars co-owns Scorpio with Ketu
- Some classics say Shanivat Rahu, Kujavat Ketu (Rahu behaves like Saturn, Ketu like Mars) — this refers to general behavior, not necessarily to relationship tables
[!NOTE] Controversy The rule Shanivat Rahu, Kujavat Ketu is often misapplied to relationship tables. PVR recommends using Saturn's table for both nodes (not Mars's table for Ketu). Rahu and Ketu are also friends with each other — but friends who can never meet (always 180° apart).
Color Associations of Planets
| Planet | Color |
|---|---|
| ☀️ Sun | Orange, pink, various shades of red |
| ☽ Moon | White |
| ♂ Mars | Blood red (rakta varna) |
| ☿ Mercury | Green (like grass and leaves) |
| ♃ Jupiter | Yellow |
| ♀ Venus | White (shveta) |
| ♄ Saturn | Blue/Black (nila and krishna) |
| 🐉 Rahu | Blue (shares blue with Saturn); represents ultraviolet in spectrum |
| 🐲 Ketu | Gray; no physical body; represents infrared in spectrum |
In the spectrum of visible light (VIBGYOR), the seven planets map to the seven colors. Rahu = ultraviolet (beyond blue/violet), Ketu = infrared (below red). This is why traditionally astrologers wear red on Tuesday, blue on Saturday, yellow on Thursday, etc.
🏠 Whole-Sign Houses Confirmed
PVR reconfirms: Each Rashi is one entire house. The Lagna sign = 1st house entirely. No house spans two signs.
The alternative (Western-influenced) method draws house cusps based on degrees — the Sripati method (similar to Porphyry). Dr. B.V. Raman sometimes used this but did not give a firm ruling.
The definitive test: Parashara, in his voluminous BPHS, whenever he speaks of houses, says "count the rashis." He never describes any other method. The traditional parampara follows whole-sign houses exclusively.
🌀 Rasi Classification: Chara, Sthira, Dwiswabhava
The 12 Rasis are divided into three groups of four:
| Type | Sanskrit | English | Signs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chara | चर | Movable | Aries ♈, Cancer ♋, Libra ♎, Capricorn ♑ |
| Sthira | स्थिर | Fixed | Taurus ♉, Leo ♌, Scorpio ♏, Aquarius ♒ |
| Dwiswabhava | द्विस्वभाव | Dual/Mutable | Gemini ♊, Virgo ♍, Sagittarius ♐, Pisces ♓ |
graph TD
Z[12 Rashis] --> C[Chara — Movable]
Z --> S[Sthira — Fixed]
Z --> D[Dwiswabhava — Dual]
C --> C1[Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn]
S --> S2[Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius]
D --> D3[Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces]
Meanings in Muhurta (Auspicious Timing)
| Sign Type | Quality | Use in Muhurta |
|---|---|---|
| Sthira | Stability, permanence | Good for long-term ventures, permanent things |
| Chara | Change, movement, volatility | Good for things requiring flexibility (e.g., job-hunting in this economy) |
| Dwiswabhava | Mix of both | Balanced; neither rigid nor unstable |
[!CAUTION] Muhurta Nuance Even a sthira lagna in a muhurta can give rigidity rather than stability if malefics like Mars are in the lagna. Always look at the full chart, not just the lagna sign type. Thumb rules are a starting point, not the answer.
🔱 Trimurtis and Rasi Types
The three cosmic functions (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) govern the three Rasi types:
| Trimurti | Rasi Type | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| Brahma (Creator) | Chara (Movable) | Creation, beginning, change |
| Vishnu (Sustainer) | Dwiswabhava (Dual) | Sustenance, balance, maintaining |
| Shiva (Destroyer/Liberator) | Sthira (Fixed) | Dissolution, death, moksha — ultimate stability |
[!NOTE] Why Shiva = Sthira? When do you become still, truly fixed? At death — or at moksha, which is the ultimate sthiti. Shiva represents both: physical death (temporary) and spiritual liberation (permanent stillness). This is why Sthira rashis are Shiva's domain.
🌐 Rasi Drishti: The Rules
Rasi Drishti is an aspect based on where a planet is placed, not on what planet it is. Any planet in a sign will aspect the signs that sign aspects.
The Three Rules
flowchart TD
R1[Dual signs — Dwiswabhava] -- aspect --> R2[All other Dual signs]
R3[Chara signs — Movable] -- aspect --> R4[Sthira signs — Fixed]
R4 -- aspect --> R3
note1[Exception: Adjacent sign is NEVER aspected]
Rule 1: Any dual sign (dwiswabhava) aspects all other dual signs.
→ Gemini aspects Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces (and vice versa).
Rule 2: Any movable sign (chara) aspects fixed signs (sthira), and any fixed sign aspects movable signs.
→ Aries (chara) aspects: Taurus ✗ (adjacent), Leo ✓, Scorpio ✓, Aquarius ✓.
Exception: A sign never aspects the sign immediately adjacent to it (too close to see).
Quick Reference: Each Sign's Rasi Drishti Targets
| Sign | Type | Signs Aspected |
|---|---|---|
| Aries ♈ | Chara | Leo ♌, Scorpio ♏, Aquarius ♒ |
| Taurus ♉ | Sthira | Cancer ♋, Libra ♎, Capricorn ♑ |
| Gemini ♊ | Dual | Virgo ♍, Sagittarius ♐, Pisces ♓ |
| Cancer ♋ | Chara | Leo ♌ ✗ (adj), Scorpio ♏, Aquarius ♒, Taurus ♉ |
| Leo ♌ | Sthira | Cancer ♋, Libra ♎ ✗ (adj), Capricorn ♑, Aries ♈ |
| Virgo ♍ | Dual | Gemini ♊, Sagittarius ♐, Pisces ♓ |
| Libra ♎ | Chara | Scorpio ♏ ✗ (adj), Aquarius ♒, Taurus ♉, Leo ♌ |
| Scorpio ♏ | Sthira | Libra ♎ ✗ (adj), Capricorn ♑, Aries ♈, Cancer ♋ |
| Sagittarius ♐ | Dual | Gemini ♊, Virgo ♍, Pisces ♓ |
| Capricorn ♑ | Chara | Aquarius ♒ ✗ (adj), Taurus ♉, Leo ♌, Scorpio ♏ |
| Aquarius ♒ | Sthira | Capricorn ♑ ✗ (adj), Aries ♈, Cancer ♋, Libra ♎ |
| Pisces ♓ | Dual | Gemini ♊, Virgo ♍, Sagittarius ♐ |
[!TIP] Shortcut for Chara/Sthira Aspects Take the adjacent sign. Make a rectangle (square) with that as the base — go every 4 signs. The other three corners of the rectangle (not the adjacent sign itself) are the three signs being aspected. Works for all Chara and Sthira signs.
[!IMPORTANT] Rasi Drishti = Permanent Influence Unlike Graha Drishti (which manifests in a specific Dasha), Rasi Drishti is a permanent, lifelong influence. If a malefic has Rasi Drishti on your lagna, you face that planet's energy throughout your entire life. This makes Rasi Drishti more fundamental than Graha Drishti.
🛡️ Argala: Conclusive Intervention
Argala literally means the bolt on a door — something that firmly locks and decides a particular aspect of a house.
"A planet with Argala on a house intervenes in its matters and decides something conclusively — just like putting a bolt on a room, taking control of it." — PVR
Three Types of Primary Argala
From any reference house, the following houses cause Argala:
| Argala Position | House to Count | What It Shows |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd-house Argala | 2nd from reference | Resources/speech influence |
| 4th-house Argala | 4th from reference | Direction/comfort influence |
| 11th-house Argala | 11th from reference | Gains/support influence |
[!NOTE] Secondary Argala Parashara and Jaimini also mention a 5th-house Argala (from the reference). This is secondary and less important. PVR mentions it but will cover it in a later class.
Key Properties of Argala
- Conclusive: The planet will intervene in the house's matters — it has a definitive role
- Timed by Dasha: Unless Rasi Drishti is also present, the Argala manifests in the planet's Dasha/Antardasha
- Can be good or bad: A benefic planet's Argala gives good results; a malefic's Argala gives harmful results
- Called Subha Argala if the causing planet is a benefic; Papa Argala if a malefic
⚔️ Virodha Argala: Counter-Intervention
Virodha Argala = the planetary "counterforce" that cancels or obstructs an Argala.
The Rule
Count the same house in the opposite direction from the reference:
| Argala Type | House Causing Argala | House Canceling It (Virodha) |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd-house Argala | 2nd from reference | 12th from reference |
| 4th-house Argala | 4th from reference | 10th from reference |
| 11th-house Argala | 11th from reference | 3rd from reference |
flowchart LR
R[Reference House] --> A2[2nd from R: Argala]
R --> A4[4th from R: Argala]
R --> A11[11th from R: Argala]
A2 --> |"canceled by"| V12[12th from R: Virodha]
A4 --> |"canceled by"| V10[10th from R: Virodha]
A11 --> |"canceled by"| V3[3rd from R: Virodha]
Who Wins: Argala or Virodha Argala?
[!IMPORTANT] The Counting Rule Count the planets in the Argala position vs. the Virodha Argala position. More planets = winning side. If 3 planets cause Argala and 2 cause Virodha Argala, the Argala prevails.
Additional modifier: Even if Virodha has fewer planets, they may win if those planets are much stronger (e.g., exalted vs. debilitated). Also consider whether the planets are friends or enemies with each other — planets that are enemies may fight among themselves and weaken the group.
Rahu-Ketu always create mutual Virodha: When Ketu has Argala on a house, Rahu will automatically have Virodha Argala on that same house (because they are always 6 houses apart). This is inherent to their nature.
🔍 Argala vs. Graha Drishti vs. Rasi Drishti — Compared
| Feature | Graha Drishti | Rasi Drishti | Argala |
|---|---|---|---|
| Based on | Planet's inherent nature/desire | Planet's sign placement | Position relative to the house |
| Meaning | Desire to influence | Permanent passive influence | Conclusive decisive intervention |
| Duration | Specific Dasha/Antardasha | Throughout life (permanent) | Specific Dasha (unless Rasi Drishti present) |
| Office analogy | Employee who wants to work on a project | Office assistant permanently assigned | Specialist with a crucial, must-do role |
| Can be good/bad | Yes | Yes (small or big) | Yes (subha or papa) |
| Relative importance | Medium | Most fundamental | Highest (most decisive) |
[!TIP] Combining All Three Maximum effect = all three present simultaneously. A planet that:
- Desires to influence a house (Graha Drishti)
- Has permanent placement-based influence (Rasi Drishti)
- Has a conclusive intervention role (Argala) ...is the most powerful influencer of that house, acting throughout life and decisively.
🔮 Sri Rama's Chart: Deep Analysis

Lagna Analysis
What has Argala on Lagna (Cancer)?
- 2nd from Cancer = Leo (empty) → no 2nd-house Argala
- 4th from Cancer = Libra → Saturn (exalted) has 4th-house Argala on Lagna
- 11th from Cancer = Taurus (empty, counted backwards from Cancer) → no 11th-house Argala
Result: Only Saturn has Argala on Lagna. Saturn is the 8th lord in exaltation — he gives physical suffering in a cruel way (krura graha) through displacement from home (4th house planet).
Does Saturn have Graha Drishti on Lagna? From Libra, Saturn's 10th house aspect goes to Cancer (Lagna). Yes! So Saturn both has Argala AND Graha Drishti on Lagna — he really wants to give this suffering AND he has the mechanism to do it.
Virodha Argala on Lagna: 10th from Cancer = Aries = Sun (exalted). Sun's Virodha Argala cancels Saturn's 4th-house Argala on Lagna. In Saturn Dasha = suffering; in Sun Dasha = suffering ends, he becomes king.
Brahmana Shaapa Yoga in Sri Rama's Chart
Rule: Two malefic planets have Graha Drishti on Jupiter.
- Saturn: 10th house Graha Drishti lands on Cancer/Lagna → on Jupiter (exalted there) ✓
- Mars: 7th house Graha Drishti from Capricorn → Cancer/Lagna → on Jupiter ✓
- Both are krura (malefic) planets ✓ → Brahmana Shaapa Yoga confirmed
Modifier:
- Saturn's involvement = the Brahmin was made sad (Saturn = sadness)
- Mars's involvement = the Brahmin was made angry (Mars = anger)
- Jupiter is exalted with Moon (extremely powerful Gaja-Kesari) = the Brahmin was extremely powerful = Narada
The curse: Narada's curse that Sri Rama would suffer in marriage.
Houses associated with the curse-giving planets (to identify the area of suffering):
- Saturn: occupies 4th; owns 7th and 8th → house, wife, transformation
- Mars: occupies 7th; owns 5th and 10th → wife (again), children, career
- Common house: 7th (wife) → Main suffering = marital separation
Dharma Sthana (9th House) Analysis
Venus (exalted in Pisces, 9th house): Ekapatnivrata — Sri Rama's dharma of one wife, expressed with Sattvic purity (Pisces = Rashi of Maharishis, owned by Jupiter = Sattvic).
Argala on 9th house (Pisces):
- 2nd from Pisces = Aries → Sun (exalted): Raja Dharma — duty as king
- 4th from Pisces = Gemini → Mercury + Ketu: Learning (Mercury) + Detachment (Ketu)
- 11th from Pisces = Capricorn → Mars (exalted): Vira Dharma — warrior's duty
Rasi Drishti on 9th house:
- Gemini is dual → aspects Pisces (and Virgo, Sagittarius) ✓
- So Mercury and Ketu (in Gemini) have both Argala AND Rasi Drishti on Pisces
- This means their influence (learning, detachment) is permanent throughout his life
Virodha Argala on 9th house:
- 10th from Pisces = Sagittarius → Rahu has Virodha Argala against Mercury/Ketu's 4th-house Argala
- Count: Rahu (1) vs. Mercury + Ketu (2) → Mercury + Ketu prevail
- Also Mercury and Ketu are friends → strong team
Conclusion on Dharma: Sri Rama permanently (throughout life) practiced learning and detachment. His Vira Dharma (during Mars Dasha) and Raja Dharma (during Sun Dasha) were temporary but strong. His Ekapatnivrata was his lifelong dharmic foundation.
Gaja-Kesari Yoga
Moon (own house in Cancer) + Jupiter (exalted in Cancer) = Gaja-Kesari Yoga. The yoga technically requires mutual Kendra (4 houses apart or together) — being together (same house) is the strongest form.
Effect: Great fame, being well-known. Sri Rama worshipped millions of years later = most powerful Gaja-Kesari.
🎯 Karakas: Project Managers
Karaka literally means "the one who gets it done" — the causer, the doer.
For each house, there is a natural (Naisargika) karaka — a planet that is permanently in charge of that house's domain, regardless of chart. There are also Chara Karakas (variable, based on each person's chart) and Sthira Karakas.
Naisargika Karakas (Natural Significators)
| House | Primary Karaka | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | ☀️ Sun | Soul = self |
| 2nd | ♃ Jupiter | Wisdom + resources |
| 3rd | ♂ Mars | Courage/initiative |
| 4th | ☽ Moon | Mind interested in comfort/home |
| 5th | ♃ Jupiter | Intelligence/abilities |
| 6th | ♂ Mars / ♄ Saturn | Service, enemies, competition |
| 7th | ♀ Venus | Desire/marriage |
| 8th | ♄ Saturn | Longevity, obstacle-clearing |
| 9th | ♃ Jupiter | Dharma/teacher/fortune |
| 10th | ☀️ Sun | Career/power/karma |
| 11th | ♃ Jupiter / ♄ Saturn | Gains |
| 12th | ♄ Saturn / ♀ Venus | Moksha/expenses |
[!NOTE] Multiple Karakas per House Each house has primary and secondary karakas, as well as sub-meanings. PVR will go through the full detailed table (second table in the handout) in later classes.

H --> HL[House Lord = Group Manager]
H --> GD[Planet with Graha Drishti = Employee who wants to work on project]
H --> RD[Planet with Rasi Drishti = Office assistant — permanently around]
H --> AR[Planet with Argala = Specialist with crucial must-do role]
HL --> KAR[House lord controls what occupants do — owner of the space]
GD --> TIMING[Works when their Dasha comes — when their time is approved]
RD --> PERM[Always there, always has some influence — may be big or small]
AR --> MUST[Must give result — conclusive role, like physical designer at tape-out]
The Politics Layer
Just as company politics affects whether a person with a crucial role can do their job — the compound relationship (Adhimitra, Mitra, Sama, Shatru, Adhishatru) between the house lord and the argala planet determines how easily the result manifests:
- Friend of house lord = easily enters the "project"; gives results freely
- Worst enemy of house lord = blocked by the group manager (Saindhava); can only act when Dasha comes
🌍 Do Gods Have Horoscopes?
A student asks: do gods have horoscopes?
PVR's answer: Yes. Evidence:
- Sri Rama's horoscope is given in the classics
- The Satyanarayana Vrata shlokas give the tithi and nakshatra of birth for each planet
- Each graha has a gotra (lineage), birth tithi, and birth nakshatra — all given in Shastras
- Parashara even considers the horoscopes of Vishnu avataras in the Raj Yoga chapter, grading Raj Yogas: Normal king → Emperor → World Emperor → Vishnu avatara (Rama, Krishna) → Brahma himself
[!NOTE] Philosophical Note The sun and moon we see physically are just one aspect of those beings. In the multidimensional universe, they exist as much more than physical objects. Their horoscopes, when constructed, may use planetary positions beyond what our four-dimensional perception captures. Even gods pray — Rama worshipped Shiva at Rameshwaram; Krishna worshipped Somnath.
[!NOTE] The Paramapurusha Exception The only being without a horoscope is the Paramapurusha — the Supreme Being (called Narayana, Sadashiva, Brahman, Virat Purusha — different names). All other created beings, including Brahma, have horoscopes.
🗣️ Sanskrit Pronunciation: Simha
PVR gives a detailed lesson on the correct pronunciation of Simha (Leo ♌):
The anunaasika (nasal sound written as a dot/bindu) has different pronunciations depending on which consonant group follows:
- Before Ka-group (Ka, Kha, Ga, Gha, Nga): sounds like ng as in "sing" → e.g., Shashanka
- Before Cha-group (Cha, Ja, Jha): sounds like nj as in "Manjari"
- Before Ta-group (Ta, Tha, Da, Dha, Na): sounds like n as in "Anta"
- Before Pa-group (Pa, Pha, Ba, Bha, Ma): sounds like m as in "Amba"
- Before Ya, Ra, La, Va, Sha, Sa, Ha: The old Vedic form was ng (as in "sing")
For Simha (before Ha): The correct pronunciation is like starting to say "Sing" but saying "Ha" instead of "Ga" at the end. So: Simha (the n has a nasal quality before h), not Simha as typically pronounced.
PVR says: "Simha is only a corrupted modern Kali Yuga corruption. Try to say Simha."
