A[Three Karaka Systems] --> B[Naisargika Karakas\nBrahma — 9 planets\nNatural significators of creation]
A --> C[Chara Karakas\nVishnu — 8 planets\nVariable significators of soul's journey]
A --> D[Sthira Karakas\nShiva — 7 planets\nFixed significators for timing death of relatives]
| System | Ruled By | Planets | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naisargika | Brahma | 9 (all) | Physical creation; natural world relationships |
| Chara | Vishnu | 8 (excl. Ketu) | Soul-level sustenance; journey toward moksha |
| Sthira | Shiva | 7 (excl. Rahu/Ketu) | Timing departure of souls (death of relatives) |
[!NOTE] Ketu refuses to become a separate soul — he wants all souls to merge back into Paramatma. Therefore, Ketu never participates in the Chara Karaka scheme.
🌟 Eight Chara Karakas
Ranked by each planet's degree of advancement within its sign (highest → lowest):
| Rank | Karaka | Abbreviation | Meaning | Soul Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Atma Karaka | AK | Soul itself | Your own Jivatma |
| 2nd | Amatya Karaka | AmK | Minister | Souls that advise / counsel you |
| 3rd | Bhratru Karaka | BK | Brother | Co-pursuers; guru + spiritual brothers |
| 4th | Matru Karaka | MK | Mother | Nurturing souls; motherly figures |
| 5th | Pitru Karaka | PiK | Father | Guiding/authoritative souls; fatherly figures |
| 6th | Putra Karaka | PK | Son | Souls that follow you blindly; true followers |
| 7th | Jnathi Karaka | JK | Rival | Competing souls; rivals; jealous relatives |
| 8th | Dara Karaka | DK | Spouse | Spouse's soul; intimate soul partner |
[!IMPORTANT] These are soul-level relationships, not just physical ones. The Bhratru Karaka includes the guru and fellow spiritual practitioners, not only blood siblings. The Putra Karaka includes true believers and blind followers, not only children.
How to Calculate
- For Sun–Saturn + Rahu: find degrees advanced within sign
- Rahu (retrograde): effective degree = 30° − actual degrees
- Compare; rank highest → lowest
- Software marks these as AK, AmK, BK, MK, PiK, PK, JK, DK
🐲 Ketu & the Karaka Scheme
- Rahu and Ketu are always at the same degree (opposite nodes)
- If Rahu and another planet share the same degree bucket → AK change rule applies to Rahu
- Ketu can never become a Chara Karaka — he opposes individual soul existence
- When Rahu and another planet are at the same degree: only Rahu is involved in the replacement mechanism, not Ketu
🔭 Chara Karakas in Rasi vs. Navamsa
Rasi Chart — Physical Level
Taking Atma Karaka as Lagna in the Rasi chart shows how the soul's journey impacts physical existence:
| Placement of other Karakas from AK | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Kendra (1/4/7/10) | Soul in sync with / supported by that Karaka; physical promotion |
| Trikona (1/5/9) | Blessing; harmony |
| 6th from AK | Depending on planetary friendship: can show obstacles or guidance through tests |
| 8th from AK | Soul is troubled / not happy; OR soul is engaged in deep spiritual sadhana |
| 12th from AK | Soul ignores/gives up that Karaka's domain |
[!TIP] The planetary relationship (friend/enemy) is more important than the house placement alone. Enemy planets in 6th from each other may be better than friendly planets in 6th.
Navamsa Chart — Dharmic / Ideological Level
Taking AK as Lagna in Navamsa shows how various souls relate to the soul's ideology:
- Karakas well-placed from AK in Navamsa → share the same ideology
- Karakas badly placed from AK in Navamsa → oppose the ideology (even if physically cooperative)
👑 Raja Yogas from Chara Karakas
Yoga 1 — AK + PK Conjunction (Parashara)
Rule: Atma Karaka and Putra Karaka conjunct = strong Raja Yoga. In 1st or 5th house → Maharaja Yoga.
Meaning: The soul has true blind followers — souls deeply bonded from past lives who will follow unconditionally. This generates power through popular support.
Example: Atal Bihari Vajpayee — Mercury (AK) + Saturn (PK) in Lagna → Maharaja Yoga → rose to power through massive popular following.
Yoga 2 — AK + PiK Conjunction (Jaimini)
Rule: Atma Karaka and Pitru Karaka conjunct = Raja Yoga. In 1st or 5th house → especially powerful.
Meaning: The soul has a powerful protective elder or fatherly figure who blesses it and enables its rise. Power comes through blessings from above.
Example: George W. Bush — Venus (AK) + Mercury (PiK) in Lagna → Rose to power via father's influence and blessings.
Yoga 3 — AK + PiK in Mutual Quadrant
Rule: Mutual quadrant placement (even without conjunction) shows some support from authorities/elders — weaker than conjunction.
Example: George Bush Senior — Sun (AK) + Jupiter (PiK) in mutual quadrant → supported by seniors/elders, but moderate (not Maharaja level).
📊 Chart: George W. Bush
Birth: July 6, 1946 · 7:35 AM (EST) · New Haven, Connecticut (72°W55′, 41°N80′)
Atma Karaka: ♀ Venus
AK Soul Weakness: Excess passion (Rajas); attachment to Venusian things
Rasi Analysis (AK = Lagna)
| Karaka | Position from AK | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury (PiK) | Conjunct in 1st | Maharaja Yoga — rose via father's blessing |
| Sun (MK) | 12th from AK | Soul ignores motherly figures |
| Saturn/Rahu (JK/other) | Not badly placed overall | Little physical opposition to AK |
Navamsa Analysis (AK = Lagna)
- Venus (AK) is exalted in Navamsa
- 5 planets in the 6th from AK → massive ideological opposition; many souls oppose his chosen Dharma
- 12th from AK: Ketu — indication of detachment / spirituality
- 12th house lord = Saturn + Rahu (in 10th from Lagna in Navamsa) → ideology of detached karma; doing duty with resignation
[!NOTE] Despite popular image, Bush's chart shows genuine spiritual detachment. He performs karma based on ideology but with a sense of resignation. The Gaja Kesari Yoga (Moon + Jupiter in 10th from Lagna) will make his karma-based actions very famous long after death.
[!WARNING] Saturn in enemy sign in Navamsa is more destructive, not less. A malefic in an enemy sign is more "determined to cause harm" (like an unhappy criminal who is more dangerous when cornered).
📊 Chart: Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Birth: December 25, 1926 · 5:10 AM IST · 78°E10′, 26°N13′
Atma Karaka: ☿ Mercury
AK Soul Weakness: Over-flexibility, indecisiveness
- Mercury (AK) + Saturn (PK) in Lagna → Maharaja Yoga → Putra Karaka Yoga → rose through mass following
- Contrast with Bush: Vajpayee's followers were voluntary, democratically-driven; Bush's rise was through elder patronage
📊 Chart: George Bush Senior
Birth: June 12, 1924 · 11:40 AM (4h W GMT) · 71°W05′, 42°N15′
Atma Karaka: ☀️ Sun
AK Soul Weakness: Ego (Ahankara)
- AK (Sun) + PK (Mercury) in 10th house → Raja Yoga (not Maharaja — not in 1st/5th, but in 10th)
- Rose through karma + following gained through actions in society
- PiK (Jupiter) in mutual quadrant from AK → also has some elder/authority support
- Saturn (JK) in 6th from AK → constant soul-level rivalry from competing souls throughout life
📊 Chart: Swami Vivekananda
Birth Data: (standard Vivekananda data used by PVR)
Atma Karaka: ☀️ Sun in Lagna
AK Soul Weakness: Ego born of spiritual enlightenment (Ahankara)
Rasi Analysis
| Karaka | Position | Planetary Friendship | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rahu (PiK) | 4th from AK | Rahu-Sun = enemies | Father/fatherly figures shunned; lost father young |
| Moon (AmK) | Kendra from AK | Moon-Sun = neutral-good | Compassionate advisors and counselors |
| Saturn (BK) | Kendra from AK | Saturn-Sun = enemies — BUT 6th is good here | Guru of opposite type tests/disciplines the soul |
| Mars (JK) | 6th from AK | Mars-Sun = friends | Friends being in 6th = actually difficult; ideological enemies who fight |
[!IMPORTANT] Enemy planets in kendras from AK is NOT always good. If Sun (AK) and Saturn (BK) are in kendra, they conflict. But if Saturn is in the 6th from Sun, the context changes: a disciple with ego problems needs a guru whose nature is opposite (Saturn/ascetic) to challenge and overcome that ego — a good placement despite the 6th house position.
Navamsa Analysis
- Moon (AmK) + Venus (PK) both well-placed from AK → counselors AND followers shared his ideology
- Saturn + Mars in 6th from AK → at the Dharmic level, determined enemies who fought his chosen spiritual path

[!TIP] When time is reported as "fairly accurate" (±5–10 min), first check if Rasi Lagna is safe (>20° from sign border = ~40+ min buffer). Then verify Navamsa (border every ~3°20′ = ~7 min buffer). Then check D10 (border every 3° = ~6 min buffer).
[!WARNING] Even "very accurate" reported birth times are often wrong — hospital records, relatives' notes, astrologers' conventions on when to record birth (first breath vs. full emergence) all introduce uncertainty.
