🙏 Opening Prayer & Chapter Introduction
PVR opens with the full Parampara invocation, followed by collective recitation of Om Hare Rama Krishna three times.
Chapter covered: Abhuta Moola Shanti Adhyaya — Chapter 93 in Santhanam's version of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS).
This chapter prescribes remedies for birth in Abhuta Moola — the beginning portion of Moola nakshatra that lies within the Jyeshtha-Moola Gandanta zone.
☄️ Abhuta Moola — The Most Dangerous Gandanta
[!IMPORTANT] Of all Gandanta junctions (Tithi, Nakshatra, and Lagna Gandantas), the Jyeshtha-Moola Nakshatra Gandanta is described by Parashara as maha dosha pradah — causing a "particularly great problem."
The Sanskrit verse:
Jyashta Moola, Moolamayor. Jyashta Moolamayor yasmad adhi pavindra rakshasau. Maha vairatayo sandhir maha dosha pradah smritah.
Reason for the severity: The nakshatra lords are Indra (lord of Jyeshtha) and Rakshasa (lord of Moola). Their enmity (maha vairata) makes their junction (sandhi) exceptionally dangerous.
⚠️ Parashara's Radical Directive: Parityajyet
Parashara's initial prescription is extreme:
Abhuta moolajam putram putrim vaapi parityajyet. Athava abdashtakam tatah tanmukham na vilokayet.
| Option | Instruction |
|---|---|
| Option 1 | Parityajyet — give up the child (for adoption) |
| Option 2 | For 8 years, the father must not see the child's face |
| Option 3 (preferred) | Perform Moola Shanti instead |
[!NOTE] Parityajyet does not mean abandonment to a garbage bin. In traditional practice it meant a formal ritual adoption: donate the baby to a capable Brahmin, who then "sells" the baby back to the parents for a token sum (e.g. 108 or 1000 rupees). This creates a karma transfer — the adopting Brahmin accepts some of the child's dosha.
Why 8 years? Parashara says the danger period lasts until the 8th year of life, so if Shanti is not done, the father's avoidance is needed until the end of the dangerous period.
🔄 Karma Transfer in Remedial Rituals
[!TIP] The remedy procedure works by burning some of the karma through the ritual itself (homam, abhishekam) and transferring the remainder to the officiating priest (Brahmin) who knowingly accepts it. This is why Parashara consistently says "give to Brahmin" — a Brahmin performing rituals was trained to withstand and burn such transferred karmas.

B -->|Remainder transferred| C[Priest / Donee\nwho accepts knowingly]
C --> D[Priest's rituals\nburn transferred karma]
[!WARNING] Do not transfer karma to someone who is unwilling or unable to handle it. The donee must be capable of withstanding the karma. Only those with strong sadhana or who know what they are accepting should receive such donations.
🔥 Moola Shanti — The Remedy Procedure
Timing
| Preferred time | Detail |
|---|---|
| 12th day from birth | Janmato dvadashah eva |
| At the return of Janma Nakshatra (Moon in Moola) | ~29–30 days |
| 8th year of life (last resort) | Vastame varshe |
| Any auspicious day (shubhe dine) | Flexibility principle |
Not before the 12th day. Any good Muhurta from day 12 onward (to day 20–25 approximately).
Location Setup

B -->|Outside the pandal| C[Yagna Kundam\nHavan Kund for Navagraha homam]
The Three Main Devatas
| Devata | Role |
|---|---|
| Nirriti (Rakshasa) | Nakshatra Devata of Moola |
| Indra | Adhidevata |
| Jaladevatas | Pratyaksha Devata (water gods) |
Grahadi yajnam (Navagraha homam) is also implied.
The Nirriti Idol
Parashara describes the idol in vivid detail:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Color | Shyama varnam — black / dark gray |
| Mood | Mahogra — very angry-looking |
| Heads | Dvisirasakam — two-headed |
| Face | Vrikananam — wolf-faced (fierce, terrible) |
| Weapon | Khargadhara — sword-wielding |
| Garment | Charmadhara — skin-wrapped |
| Vehicle | Seated on a kripana vahana — a dead body |
If making such an idol in gold is not practical, place gold itself (suvarnam sarva-daivatyam) — gold can carry any devata's invocation.
Kalasha Preparation
- Panchagavya (five cow products), good water
- Shatoushadi — hundred kinds of herbs (use what is available)
- Vamsyapatra (clay or wooden pot) facing west for Nirriti
Mantras for the Homam
| Mantra | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Indra mantras | 108 or 1000 times in fire |
| Tryambakam Yajamahe (Mrityunjaya) | Death/danger relief — always required |
| Nirriti mantras (implied) | Pacify the Rakshasa devata |
| Jaladevata mantras | Apsu me somo abhravit etc. |
Conclusion of Puja
- Abhishekam of husband, wife, and child in Bhadrasana (good sitting posture)
- Wear white clothes (Shuklavastram), smear white sandal/vibhuti
- Donate a milk-giving cow (dhenumpayasvini) to the Acharya
- Give dakshina to ritvigs; feed Brahmins
Closing Mantra
Yat papam yacchame taushtyam sarvagatreshvavasthitam tat sarvam bhakshaya yat tvam lakshmim pushtim cha vardhaya.
❓ Q&A: Practical Questions from Students
Q: Can you donate an idol of a cow instead of a real cow? A: Real cows and oxen are still possible to donate, especially to people in rural India. In modern cities one can donate to people in rural areas or, if inspired, donate a gold/silver representation.
Q: If the baby was born in Moola, which padam exactly triggers Abhuta Moola? A: Go back to Parashara's previous chapter defining the ghatikas. It covers a considerable portion of the beginning of Moola.
Q: A daughter born in Moola nakshatra — is it difficult for marriage in Tamil Nadu? A: PVR acknowledges this unfortunate societal bias. The solution is to perform Moola Shanti, which neutralizes the dosha. If the Shanti has been done, the concern is resolved.
📊 Chart Analysis: Subramaniam's Chart (Sun Dasha Issues)
Birth data: June 13, 1949, 10:55 AM, Palayamkottai (Tamil Nadu, India)
Key Planetary Configuration
| House | Planet | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Saturn | Lagna lord in Lagna (MKS for Saturn) |
| 10th | Saturn (lord) | Karma house |
| With Lagna | Sun, Mars, Mercury | Sun + Yogakaraka Mars + Maraka Mercury |
Dasha at time of fracture accident: Sun Dasha (Visaptamasa Dasha) / Saturn-Saturn Antardasha (Vimshottari)
Divisional Chart Analysis for Health
| Chart | Sun's Condition |
|---|---|
| Navamsa (D9) | Afflicted by Ketu (6th lord) |
| Sashtamsa (D6, health) | Afflicted by Rahu and Ketu |
| Trimsamsa (D30, evils) | Afflicted by Rahu and Ketu in Scorpio |
[!IMPORTANT] Sun (Lagna lord) is eclipsed/afflicted by Ketu in D9, D6, and D30. This triple weakness in the health-related divisional charts explains why Sun Dasha brought bone-related problems (Sun = Karaka for bones when afflicted).
Recommended Remedies
- Maha Ganapati Homam — addresses Sun + Ketu combination; Ketu represents Ganesha
- Maha Mrityunjaya Homam — addresses Sun's affliction; Tryambakam for death-like dangers
- During Sun-Rahu Antardasha (approx. 2010): Perform Mrityunjaya Homa preemptively
[!WARNING] Sun-Rahu Antardasha was identified as particularly dangerous given A6 (Arudha of 6th house) lord being Rahu in D6 and Rahu being with Sun. PVR stated: "Do a Mrityunjaya Homa before that period starts."
🔭 Divisional Chart Technique: Sashtiayini Dasha in Tithi Pravesh
Key finding from chart analysis: When Tithi Astottari Dasha in the Tithi Pravesh chart does not explain an event clearly, consider conditional Nakshatra Dashas.
flowchart TD
A[Event not explained by\nTithi Astottari Dasha] --> B{Is there a conditional\nNakshatra Dasha applicable?}
B -->|Sun in Lagna of Annual Chart| C[Try Sashtiayini Dasha]
B -->|7th lord in Lagna| D[Try Visaptadasama Dasha]
C --> E[Check if this Dasha\nexplains the event better]
D --> E
In Subramaniam's Tithi Pravesh chart, Sun was in Lagna → Sashtiayini Dasha applies. Moon (in 8th in the annual chart, in Manakaraka sthana) gave the fracture event. This explanation was far superior to the Tithi Astottari analysis.
Rule: When a conditional Nakshatra Dasha applies in a Tithi Pravesh chart, it may supersede Tithi Astottari for that year.
⚖️ Q&A: Accusation, Arudha Lagna & Tenth House
Q: Which house shows accusations against a person?
| Reference Point | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 10th from Lagna afflicted by Rahu/malefic | Person actually engaged in bad conduct |
| 10th from Arudha Lagna afflicted by Rahu | Mere accusation / image blot (may be false) |
| 10th from Moon afflicted | Person mentally suffers — feels the world dislikes them |
| Both 10th from Lagna + 10th from AL | Did something bad AND it became public |
[!NOTE] The 10th house name used by Parashara: Mana — meaning respect, character, and conduct in society. Accusation is fundamentally an attack on Mana.
Amala Yoga: If the 10th house from both Lagna and Moon has only natural benefics (and no malefics occupying or aspecting), the person has unblemished reputation (Amala = pure/clean).
🌙 Q&A: Moon Lagna vs. Rashi Lagna Priority
Q: When should we read the chart from Moon rather than Lagna?
| Condition | Priority |
|---|---|
| Moon is strong (many planets with Moon) | Give more importance to Moon Lagna |
| Lagna has more planets | Give more importance to Lagna |
| Moon is with Rahu/Ketu | Rahu/Ketu weaken, not strengthen Moon |
"If Moon is strong, how his mind looks at things becomes an important part of who he is. Houses from Moon show his views on the world." — PVR
Measuring Moon's strength vs. Lagna's strength:
- Count real (non-Rahu/Ketu) planets associated with each
- Moon has exaltation/debilitation, Lagna does not — but for this comparison, ignore dignities; just count planets
- More planets = stronger reference point
