🕉️ Class 26 — BPHS Chapter 24: Lagna Lord in Houses 1–6 & Health Chart Reading
BPHS Chapter 24 covers results of the Lagna lord placed in each house. The teacher explains the underlying logic (Arudha Lagna, Argala, house significations) for six placements (1–6), then shifts to a chart case study: a student with elbow/spine nerve pain (Cancer Lagna, Aug 1953) with Lagna Vimshottari Dasha analysis.

🙏 Opening & Session Overview {#opening}
Invocation: Hare Rama Krishna × 3
Today's structure:
- First half — BPHS Chapter 24: results of house lords (beginning with Lagna lord in various houses)
- Second half — practical chart reading (student's health question)
- Next session — continue from where we leave off today
Context: All 12 house chapters are now complete. Chapter 24 begins the systematic study of house lords: how the lord of each house gives different results depending on which house it occupies. This session covers Lagna lord in houses 1–6.
📖 BPHS Chapter 24 — Lagna Lord in Houses 1–6 {#bphs-ch24}
Key Interpretive Framework
[!IMPORTANT] The Lagna lord shows where the intelligence of the person is directed. Lagna represents the body/self. The Lagna lord shows how the intelligence is focused toward that body/self. Depending on which house the Lagna lord occupies, the person's intelligence is directed at the corresponding area of life.
All specific results given by Parāśara are guidelines for expanding your thinking, not thumb rules. They must be combined with: the nature of the specific planet, its aspects and associations, the condition of the relevant lords, and the strength of other houses.
Critical tools used to explain results:
- Aruḍha Lagna (AL): The projected image of the self — how the world sees the person
- Argala: Conclusive intervention of a planet on a house
- 2nd house Argala: Provides resources (most direct)
- 4th house Argala: Drives/gives comfort to the destination house
- 11th house Argala: Fructification/certification — catalyzes and brings closure (most important)
- Virodha Argala: Counter-intervention blocking the Argala
🏠 Lagna Lord in 1st House {#ll-1st}
Sanskrit verse: "Dehasukha bhag... buja vikrama... manavan... chanchal... dvi-bharya..."
| Result | Meaning | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Deha sukha bhāk | Blessed with physical wellbeing, health, comfort | Intelligence directed at own body → person takes excellent care of body; interested in fitness |
| Bāhuvikrama | Strong shoulders, physically strong constitution | Person is physically robust |
| Matimān | Alert, intelligent mind | — |
| Cañcala | Somewhat fickle-minded | Intelligence focused on 4th house from AL (direction/path) — too much thinking about "what to do" → perceived as indecisive |
| Two wives / interest in others' wives | Slightly licentious | Aspecting 7th house of relationship; interest in body's pleasures |
Aruḍha Lagna calculation: When Lagna lord is in Lagna (1st house), count 1 sign from Lagna to LL, then 1 sign from LL → would give Lagna itself. But AL cannot fall in 1st or 7th (exception rule) → AL falls in 10th house. Lagna lord then falls in 4th from AL = house of direction/path → over-thinking direction = fickle-mindedness (perceived by others).
[!NOTE] Fickle-mindedness may be perceived by others (4th from AL = how others see you thinking about direction) even if the person is not actually fickle. Don't predict based on this alone.
💰 Lagna Lord in 2nd House {#ll-2nd}
Sanskrit verse: "Lagneśe dhanake bālo lābhavān paṇḍitaḥ sukhī, suśīlo dharmavin mānī bahudhāra guṇair yutaḥ"
| Sanskrit | Transliteration | Result | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lābhavān | — | Material gains, profits | Intelligence directed at wealth accumulation → active interest in money (doesn't guarantee wealth) |
| Paṇḍitaḥ | Scholarly | Appears knowledgeable | 2nd house = speech; eloquent, intelligent speech → world perceives as scholar |
| Sukhī | Happy, peaceful, relaxed | Comfort and peace | 2nd house is 11th from 4th (fructification of peace/comfort) — conclusive intervention in 4th house |
| Dharmavin | Knows/follows Dharma | Righteous, honorable | 2nd house is 6th from 9th (fight for Dharma) → directs intelligence toward fighting for righteousness |
| Bahudhāra | Many wives | Multiple relationships | 2nd house = 8th from 7th (death of first relationship) → first marriage may end, leading to second |
On the peace result (Sukhī): The 2nd house has the most important Argala on the 4th house of peace — the 11th house Argala (fructification). Planets in the 2nd house conclusively determine the peace/comfort of the person. Whether this brings good or bad depends on which planet is there and its relationship to Moon (significator of peace). Example: Saturn in 2nd = enemy of Moon, 8th lord = will disturb peace; Jupiter in 2nd = friend of Moon, 4th lord = will enhance peace.
[!TIP] Argala vs. Graha Drishti distinction:
- Graha Drishti (planetary aspect) = a desire to influence — results may or may not come
- Argala = a conclusive intervention — the planet stamps its influence on the destination house (good or bad depending on nature)
⚔️ Lagna Lord in 3rd House {#ll-3rd}
Results: Valorous as a lion; extremely prosperous; honorable/respectable; intelligent; two wives
| Result | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Brave like a lion | 3rd house = Vikrama Sthāna (house of bravery); intelligence directed at bold action |
| Very prosperous | (1) 3rd house has Argala on 2nd (resource house providing wealth); (2) Aspecting 9th house of fortune; (3) AL falls in 5th house → Lagna lord is in 11th from AL → planet in 11th from AL always gives material/financial success (world sees as very prosperous) |
| Honorable | 3rd house = 6th from 10th (fighting for honor/reputation) → person fights fiercely for their name/reputation in society |
| Intelligent | 3rd house has 11th house Argala on 5th (fructification of intelligence) → conclusive intervention in matters of intelligence |
| Two wives | 3rd house = desire (kāma); very outgoing, desiring nature → multiple relationships possible |
AL calculation for LL in 3rd: Count 3 from Lagna to LL (3rd house), then 3 from LL → 5th house. So AL is in 5th. Lagna lord is in 3rd = 11th from AL (5th). The 11th from AL always shows material success in the world.
[!IMPORTANT] Universal principle: Planets in the 11th from Aruḍha Lagna always give material success — the world perceives the person as prosperous and gainful, regardless of other parameters.
👨👩👧 Lagna Lord in 4th House {#ll-4th}
Sanskrit: "Lagneśe sukhage bālaḥ pitṛmātṛ sukhānvitaḥ, bahu bhrātṛ yutaḥ kāmī guṇarūpa samānvitaḥ"
| Sanskrit | Result | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Pitṛ mātṛ sukhānvitaḥ | Happiness from both parents | 4th house = mother; aspecting 10th (father per Parāśara's alternate rule); person attached to both parents |
| Bahu bhrātṛ yutaḥ | Many siblings | 4th house has resource Argala on 3rd (younger siblings); 4th has argala on 11th (elder siblings) |
| Kāmī | Has many desires | 4th has resource Argala on 3rd (house of desire) |
| Guṇarūpa | Virtuous and good-looking | AL falls in 4th house itself (or 10th from AL; either way, Lagna lord is in Aruḍha Lagna) — planets in AL are key for looks/image |
AL calculation for LL in 4th: Count 4 from Lagna, then 4 from LL → 7th house. But AL cannot be in 7th → take 10th from 7th → 4th house. So AL is the same as the 4th house, and Lagna lord is in AL. Planets in AL give good (or bad) looks/image based on their nature.
[!TIP] Aruḍha Lagna is the key for judging the physical appearance and image of a person. Lagna shows the actual self (unseen); AL shows the projected self (what others perceive). Planets in AL directly shape how a person appears to the world.
On "happiness from father": Parāśara sometimes uses the 10th house for father (in addition to the 9th). A planet in the 4th house is the 7th from 10th → husband/wife of the father = mother. From that, he's the 4th (mother) = connected to both parents.
👶 Lagna Lord in 5th House {#ll-5th}
Sanskrit: "Lagneśe sutage jantoḥ suta saukhyaṃ ca madhyamam, prathamāpatya nāśasyān mānī krodhī nṛpa priyaḥ"
| Sanskrit | Result | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Suta saukhyaṃ madhyamam | Happiness from children is average/medium | Intelligence overly directed at children → concern (usually means worry, not just affection) |
| Prathamāpatya nāśa | First child may be lost | Lagna lord: (1) has Argala on 12th from 5th (loss of child); (2) aspects 11th (Marakasthāna for child = 7th from 5th); (3) is lord of 9th from 5th (final rites of child) |
| Mānī | Honorable | — |
| Krodhī | Short-tempered | — |
| Nṛpapriyaḥ | Liked by rulers, authority | — |
[!WARNING] "First child may be lost" is a guideline, not a certainty. If the 5th lord is well-placed and Jupiter protects the 5th house, children will be fine. Parāśara's purpose is to teach that just because Lagna lord is in 5th, do not assume children's happiness is guaranteed. The person is focused on children — this can be worry (problem with child) OR pride (doting parent). Context, 5th lord strength, and Jupiter must be examined.
The word jantu (animal) is used by Parāśara deliberately — these principles apply to the natural horoscopes of animals, not just humans.
Why Parāśara gives specific results: His goal is not to provide thumb rules for prediction. His deeper purpose is to illustrate how various analytical parameters (Argala, AL, house significations, aspects) interact — to expand the thinking of the student. The specific results are examples to teach principles.
⚡ Lagna Lord in 6th House {#ll-6th}
Sanskrit: "Lagneśe ripu bhage... deha sukha vihīnaḥ... pāpa sahite ripu pīḍanam... śubha dṛṣṭi hīne..."
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
| Lagna lord in 6th (base) | No physical happiness/comfort; person is always fighting obstacles |
| With malefic association | Trouble from enemies — enemies attack |
| Without benefic aspects | Result is even worse |
Why bad for physical wellbeing:
- 6th house = house of fights, obstacles, overcoming them
- Intelligence directed at fighting → no comfort, no peace, always in battle mode
- 6th house has resource Argala on 3rd (drive, initiative → motivates the person but robs peace)
- 6th house has fructification Argala on 8th (anxiety, worries) → certifies and catalyzes tensions
The nuance: 6th house also shows: (1) the ability to fight back and overcome; (2) siddhi (spiritual powers) — it is a house of sādhanā; (3) initiation into spiritual practices. So the planet here can give great spiritual attainments alongside physical struggles.
[!NOTE] New parameter introduced here: Parāśara now explicitly states that benefic or malefic associations and aspects on the Lagna lord should be used to judge whether the result is magnified (malefic association = worse result for bad outcomes; benefic aspects = mitigated). This principle applies retrospectively to all previous results — e.g., AL in 4th giving good looks is further enhanced by benefic planets on the LL, and diminished by malefic planets.
🔄 Teaching — Applying Results to All Divisional Charts {#divisional-application}
[!IMPORTANT] All results of house lords in houses apply to ALL divisional charts, not just Rāśi.
Each divisional chart is a separate plane of existence:
| Divisional Chart | Plane | What Lagna Lord Shows |
|---|---|---|
| D-1 (Rāśi) | Physical/material plane | How intelligence is directed in physical life |
| D-9 (Navāṃśa) | Dharmic/marital plane | How intelligence operates in Dharmic and marital life |
| D-10 (Daśāṃśa) | Karmic/professional plane | What the professional self is focused on; professional direction |
| D-3 (Drekkāṇa) | Siblings plane | How one's intelligence operates re: siblings |
| D-6 (Ṣaṣṭhāṃśa) | Disease plane | Self as expressed through illness — NOT protective |
Example: If D-10 Lagna lord is in the 9th house, the person's professional intelligence is directed at doing the right/dharmic thing in career. If in the 6th house, they fight obstacles constantly in professional life, etc.
[!TIP] Always use the correct divisional chart for the matter at hand. Only then will you get clarity — otherwise, confusion will result from mixing planes.
🏥 Case Study — Nerve Pain & Health Analysis {#case-study}
🗂️ Chart Data {#chart-data}
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Date of Birth | August 31, 1953 |
| Time | 4:05 AM |
| Place | Visakhapatnam, India |
| Longitude | 83°E 18′ |
| Latitude | 17°N 42′ |
| Time Zone | UTC +5:30 |
| Lagna | Cancer (Karka) |
| Moon | Taurus (Vṛṣabha) — Kṛttikā 4th Pāda |
| Presenting concern | Pain starting in elbow 2–3 weeks ago; shooting up through arm to spine (mid-spine); suspected nerve compression from prolonged computer use in wrong ergonomic position |
| Confirmed event | Married December 7, 1989 |
⚖️ Lagna Vimshottari vs. Chandra Vimshottari {#lagna-vs-chandra}
Step 1: Which Dasha to use? Check for conditional Dashas:
- Lagna lord in 7th? No
- 7th lord in Lagna? No
- 10th lord in 10th? No
- Lagna having Sun? No
→ Use standard Vimshottari Dasha. But the question arises: from Lagna or from Moon?
Vimshottari seed strength comparison:
| Seed | Planets in Kendras |
|---|---|
| From Moon | 2 (excluding Moon) |
| From Lagna | 5 |
| In Lagna sign itself | 3 planets |
Conclusion: Lagna is stronger → use Lagna Vimshottari (Lagna Vimshottari Dasha)
[!WARNING] Critical caveat for Lagna Vimshottari: Because the Ascendant moves ~30× faster than Moon (Lagna completes zodiac in 1 day, Moon in ~29.5 days), the Dasha is extremely sensitive to birth time accuracy.
Sensitivity formula:
- Chandra Vimshottari: If birth time is off by M minutes and 1st Dasha length is N years → error = M × N ÷ 4 days
- Lagna Vimshottari: Multiply by 30 (since Lagna moves 30× faster) → error can be 4 months per minute of birth time error
Consequence: Lagna Vimshottari Pratyantar Dasha dates can be off by several months. This is a drawback but also a tool — if you have known events, you can use Lagna Vimshottari to rectify birth time very precisely (even to seconds).
Marriage verification (Dec 7, 1989):
- Running Dasha: Venus–Mercury
- Venus = UL lord; Mercury = 9th lord in Navāṃśa → both can give marriage
- Pratyantar Dasha: Near end of Moon Pratyantar
- Moon = 7th lord from Lagna; in 8th from UL; in 11th house from Śukralagna → strong marriage candidate
- Confirmed: Marriage timing makes sense with Lagna Vimshottari (Pratyantar may be off by couple months but Moon is clearly the strongest sub-lord candidate)
♂ Current Dasha: Mars Mahadasha {#mars-dasha}
Previous Dasha: Moon Mahadasha — Moon is exalted Lagna lord in 11th house; in Bādhakasthāna but overall not harmful; Lagna lord is always protective of the body.
Current Dasha: Mars (started approximately July 24, 2008 — but may be off by few weeks due to Lagna Vimshottari sensitivity)
Mars analysis:
| Chart | Mars Position | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Rāśi | Lagna (Karma–Parākrama lord in Lagna) — debilitated | Not terrible: 5th + 10th lord (Yogakāraka), agenda for career/scholarship; but malefic in Lagna |
| Drekkāṇa | Sarpa Drekkāṇa (snake) | Inauspicious Drekkāṇa — physical suffering possible |
| Navāṃśa | 64th navāṃśa lord | Some Maraka-like maleficence |
| Position | In Gaṇḍānta | Last navāṃśa = Gaṇḍānta — inauspicious |
| Association | With Ketu (5th lord) — too far to be a strong conjunction | Ketu far (20°+) — not a dominant influence |
| Bādhaka association | Venus (Bādhakeśa) afflicting Mars | Also too far (~20°) — not dominant |
D-6 (Ṣaṣṭhāṃśa) — Mars assessment:
- 3rd + 10th lord in 2nd house
- No link to 6th, 8th, or 12th directly
- Some link to 8th house (aspects it from 2nd)
- Being a malefic in Lagna with Ketu → some health problems possible
- But: no major cruel agenda — Mars wants to give career, scholarship, recognition
Overall Mars Dasha prognosis: This is a "small bump in the road", not a long-term health crisis. The current elbow/spine problem is consistent with Mars Dasha (Mars shows nerve marrow/nerve tissue in D-6). Prognosis: temporary, resolving in weeks to a few months with proper care.
[!NOTE] Mars and nerve tissue in D-6: Mars rules nerve marrow and nerve tissue in the Ṣaṣṭhāṃśa. A compressed nerve causing pain radiating from elbow to mid-spine is a classic Mars-related nerve-tissue issue. The likely cause is prolonged use of mouse in non-ergonomic position compressing a nerve at elbow or mid-spine.
📊 D-6 and D-30 — Mercury Pratyantar Context {#d6-d30}
The actual onset of symptoms occurred in a Mercury Pratyantar Dasha of Moon Mahadasha (immediately prior to Mars MD starting).
Mercury in D-6 (Ṣaṣṭhāṃśa):
- Bādhakeśa (Badhaka lord = Venus; but in this context, Mercury's Bādhaka role via Pisces/Virgo placement)
- Mercury in 8th house of D-6 → 7th lord in 8th = Maraka combination in the disease chart
- Conclusion: Mercury Pratyantar gave the health tension
Mercury in D-30 (Triṃśāṃśa):
- 8th lord in 7th house → Again a Maraka in the subconscious disease chart
Saturn Antardasha (upcoming in Lagna Vimshottari):
- D-6: 11th + 12th lord in 3rd house; Parivartana with Venus → not as bad as Mercury
- D-30: 3rd + 4th lord in 4th — not suffering-oriented
- Rāśi: With Sun and Ketu in 11th/12th placement → some affliction remains
- Conclusion: Pain may persist somewhat into Saturn Antardasha but will not be as severe as Mercury's impact
📅 Tithi Pravesh — Current & Next Year {#tithi-pravesh}
Current year Tithi Pravesh (2007–2008):
| Factor | Detail |
|---|---|
| Hora lord | Moon (ruler of year) |
| Active Dasha in TP | Mercury period — triggered the health problem |
| Mercury in TP | Bādhakeśa in Bādhakasthāna (exalted Virgo in 4th from Pisces Lagna = Bādhaka sthāna for Pisces Lagna) → difficult-to-diagnose problems |
| Sanity checks | Mṛtyu Bhāga — nobody; Mercury in Agni Drekkāṇa (fire, inauspicious); Roga Sāhama at 17° Aquarius — Mercury not connected; Kali Sāhama at Libra — Mercury not connected |
| D-6 (year TP) | Mercury = Bādhakeśa in 8th house → confirms health problem in Mercury sub-period |
| D-30 (year TP) | Mercury = 8th lord in 7th → Maraka in disease subconscious chart |
Birthday: August 31, 1953 → Tithi Pravesh 2008 will start around August 23, 2008.
Next year (2008–2009 Tithi Pravesh):
| Factor | Detail |
|---|---|
| Hora lord | Venus — Yogakāraka; in 8th house with 5th lord, 9th lord, and 1st lord (Saturn) |
| Lagna lord Saturn | In 8th house with Mandi–Gulika — initially concerning |
| Trinal lords | 5th lord (Jupiter/Venus), 9th lord, and Lagna lord (Saturn) all together in 8th = sudden/unexpected positive development — "something you didn't expect" |
| Venus–Mercury | In 8th — close conjunction forming excellent Rāja Yoga (Dharma Karma Ādhipati Yoga = 5th + 10th lord together) in annual chart → very auspicious for career advancement |
| D-20 (Viṃśāṃśa) | Venus–Mercury in 12th — some caution |
| Overall assessment | Mixed but trending positive. The 8th house yoga of trinal lords shows sudden positive development. Health problems should largely resolve. Some career growth expected especially in Venus or Mercury sub-period. |
[!TIP] "Looking at this, my feeling is something you did not expect — some sudden positive development may happen in your life in the coming year. Some really positive growth, because this is a nice yoga of Lagna lord, 5th lord, 9th lord all together."
Year 2009–2010 Tithi Pravesh:
- Lagna lord in 3rd house; 8th lord in 8th (Hasta Yoga); 9th lord in 9th house (Guru Chandra Yoga — some caution but not in a bad house)
- D-6: No major afflictions
- Conclusion: 2009 year appears quite fine — health stabilises.
💊 Remedies: Chandra & Angaraka Kavacham {#remedies}
Recommended prayers:
- Chandra Kavacham (armour prayer to Moon)
- Moon is exalted Lagna lord (physical wellbeing guardian)
- Previous tenant taking care of the house — ask him to speak to the new tenant (Mars)
- Angaraka Kavacham (armour prayer to Mars)
- Mars is the new Dasha lord — request him not to trouble the physical body
[!TIP] Kavachams for physical troubles: "For physical troubles, Kavachams are always very auspicious." Kavachams of any graha or deity provide protective armour (kavaca = armour). For genuine results, they need persistent effort — ideally 1008 repetitions to form a protective field. Even 30–40 days of daily recitation creates tangible benefit. Better to do imperfectly every day than to do nothing.
Practical instruction:
- Search internet for Chandra Kavacham and Angaraka Kavacham
- If unavailable: call the teacher before the next class → he will record from the Navagraha Kavacham book
- Recite both daily — even a few minutes daily, building up over time
Physical advice (non-astrological):
- Correct posture immediately — identify if elbow, knee, or spine is the compression point
- If meditation posture is causing spinal compression: sit in a chair with back straight rather than forcing Padmāsana
- Strengthen surrounding muscles (not just apply hot water, which only relaxes muscles temporarily)
- Use Nārāyaṇa Tailam (Ayurvedic nerve oil) for massage
- Rest the affected limb — the person already stopped using the right hand (good)
- The teacher's personal note: He himself experienced mild spinal compression during an 18-hour continuous Homam and an extended weekend Chandi Pāṭha — leaning even slightly forward over a book for hours can compress nerves
