🕉️ Class 81 — Nakshatra Dasha Selection: Lagna vs Chandra Lagna & Tajika Annual Chart Analysis

The key to Surya Siddhanta-based timing is picking the right dasha. When you apply Parashara's applicability conditions from both Lagna and Chandra Lagna, and cross-validate against real events, the correct dasha becomes unmistakably clear. This class demonstrates the method with two live chart examples, then extends the analysis to Dasamsa and Vimshamsa for career and spiritual life.

💻 jHora Software Update — FSS Sundial Time Change

Background: The Equation of Time Problem

Standard clock time is linear (based on quartz oscillation). Planetary positions are computed from sundial / apparent / ephemeris time, which is nonlinear and based on solar motion. This difference — the equation of time — can be up to a few minutes.

Approach Method Accuracy
Swiss Ephemeris Taylor series up to T⁶ Very high
Old jHora (Vinay Jha method) Lahiri's approximate linear/quadratic formula Moderate
New jHora (v7.52 beta+) Surya Siddhanta (FSS) for sundial correction Surya Siddhanta–consistent

[!IMPORTANT] Breaking change in jHora v7.52 beta: The sundial time calculation was switched to full Surya Siddhanta (FSS). If you rectified a chart with v7.51, you must add a small time delta (typically a few seconds to ~1 minute) to get the same Lagna/Moon/Sun in the new version. PVR's own birth time shifted from 17:47:13 to 17:48:15 (Madhyapatnam, 4 April 1970, 5h30m east of GMT, 81°08'E, 16°10'N).

Why This Matters for Mundane Charts

For natal chart rectification the impact is negligible (just a delta in time). However, for exact ingress events — Sun entering a new sign, Moon entering a new nakshatra — this precision matters in mundane (world) astrology.

Daylight Saving Time Database Upgrade

The upcoming v7.52 release also incorporates a comprehensive DST database:

  • Pre-1986 USA: states had independent DST laws (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.)
  • Wartime national laws were previously programmed
  • New database covers all historical state/town-level DST rules

[!TIP] Download jHora v7.52 beta from the /AH/test directory before rectifying any new charts, to avoid re-rectification effort.

🌌 Core Teaching: Lagna vs Chandra Lagna for Dasha Applicability

The Three Lagnas

Parashara's conditions for special dasha applicability (Vargottama Lagna, tenth lord in tenth, seventh lord in Lagna, etc.) are stated in terms of Lagna. However, a chart has three reference points:

Reference Signifies Relevance
Lagna Physical body Default for Parashara's conditions
Chandra Lagna Mind / mental disposition Nakshatra dashas start from Moon's nakshatra — Moon is primary
Surya Lagna Soul Applicable for Chara Dasha (Lagna or Sun as starting sign)

[!NOTE] Nakshatra dashas always proceed from Chandra's nakshatra regardless of which Lagna is used for the applicability condition. Chandra Lagna is not about changing the dasha seed — it is about evaluating whether a special dasha condition holds.

The Revised Rule

When checking special dasha conditions (e.g., Vargottama for Saptarishi Dasha):

  1. Check from Lagna first (standard)
  2. Also check from Chandra Lagna, especially when:
    • Moon is in a friendly sign with a strong Gajakesari Yoga
    • Moon's condition (Vargottama, yogas) is stronger than Lagna's condition
  3. When a rare special condition holds powerfully from Chandra Lagna but not from Lagna — the special dasha from Moon may be more applicable
  4. Pragmatic test: verify against 2–3 known events before committing to a dasha

[!IMPORTANT] This is an exception, not the rule. Moon-based applicability applies only when Moon is genuinely stronger than Lagna in the chart. When Lagna has a powerful tenth-house combination and Moon is weak (e.g., debilitated), Lagna dominates — use standard conditions.

📜 Lomasa Maharshi's Rule for Vimshottari Seed Nakshatra

The teaching of Lomasa Maharshi governs when to start Vimshottari from Krittika (standard) vs Ardra:

Hora of Lagna Paksha Dasha Seed Nakshatra
Chandra Hora Shukla Paksha Vimshottari Krittika (standard)
Surya Hora Krishna Paksha Vimshottari Ardra
Chandra Hora Krishna Paksha Standard Saptarishi/Sadashottari Default
Surya Hora Shukla Paksha Standard Saptarishi/Sadashottari Default

Hora determination:

  • Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo…): first half = Surya Hora, second half = Chandra Hora
  • Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo…): first half = Chandra Hora, second half = Surya Hora

When starting from Ardra: counting proceeds Ardra (Sun) → Punarvasu (Moon) → Pushya (Mars)… — not from Krittika.

[!NOTE] In old jHora, selecting the seed nakshatra was unintuitive (you had to select the planet whose dasha aligned with Krittika). In v7.52+, you simply select the desired starting nakshatra directly.

🪐 Case Study 1 — PVR's Own Chart (Travel Abroad, 1994)

Chart: 4 April 1970, 17:48:15, Madhyapatnam, India (81°08'E, 16°10'N) Tajika Chart for 1994: cast for 10:50:46 PM, 4 April 1994 Event: Left India for Korea, 9–10 November 1994

Divisional Chart: D4 (Chaturthamsa — Property & Fortune)

Lagna: Leo (~6° → Taurus Navamsa = Venus Navamsa) Relevant houses for foreign travel: 7th, 9th, 12th

Planet Analysis for Foreign Travel

Planet Role Significance for Travel
Mars 9th lord, Yogakaraka, Bhadkesha In watery sign (favors foreign travel); with Rahu (7th lord, karaka); aspects Saturn (other 7th lord); dispositor of 12th lord Moon; highly benefic
Moon 12th lord in 9th Benefic connection but weaker than Mars
Rahu 7th lord, karaka Yogakaraka by association with Mars
Jupiter 5th lord Slightly benefic; associated with Moon

Best candidate for giving foreign travel: Mars (Yogakaraka with connections to 7th, 9th, 12th, Bhadka, and karaka)

Dasha Candidates Tested

Dasha Period of Event Verdict
Dwadashottari (Lagna in Venus Navamsa) Saturn Dasha (Sep–Nov 1994) Saturn = 6th/7th lord, slightly malefic — does not fit strongly
Vimshottari (standard, from Krittika) Jupiter Dasha Jupiter = 5th/8th lord — more likely to give return home, not travel abroad
Vimshottari from Ardra (Surya Hora, Krishna Paksha) Venus Dasha (Sep 24 – Nov 23) Venus = rank malefic (10th/3rd lord); in 12th but no 9th link — doesn't fit
Shadashottari Sun Dasha Sun = Lagna lord in 2nd — not a travel candidate
Saptarishi Dasha from Chandra Lagna Mars Dasha Mars = Yogakaraka, all foreign travel connections — fits perfectly

The Chandra Lagna Key

  • Moon is at ~3° Aries (D4 Tajika)
  • Moon is in the first Navamsa of Aries = Aries Navamsa = Vargottama
  • Condition for Saptarishi Dasha: Lagna in Vargottama
  • From Chandra Lagna, Moon is Vargottama → Saptarishi Dasha applies
  • Mars Dasha (Saptarishi from Chandra Lagna) gave the travel abroad event
  • Moon was in a friendly sign with Gajakesari Yoga (Jupiter in Aries with Moon) — Moon was strong

[!TIP] For Chara Dasha: Parashara explicitly allows starting from Lagna or Sun. The software defaults to Lagna, but you can manually set the starting sign to Sun's position and compare results.

👔 Case Study 2 — Visakhapatnam Native (Career & Job Loss)

Chart: 31 August 1953, 04:04 AM (rectified; original 04:05), Visakhapatnam (83°18'E, 17°42'N) Profession: System integration & testing (hardware/electronics, ASIC design, data analysis) Key Events:

  • Oct 2002 – Oct 2005: Out of job (3 years)
  • Rejoined: 3 October 2005
  • Job loss: April 2011 (2011 April 12)

Chart Signature for Profession

Indicator Description
10th house Venus, Jupiter, Ketu — spiritual + technical combination
10th lord Mercury In Scorpio (Ketu sign) — logical analysis of complex systems
Ketu in 10th Machines, electronics, hardware
Mars aspect on 10th Energy, drives, engineering
Mercury + Ketu Parivartana — deep exchange between logic and machines

Rahu-Ketu = thinking in large electronic blocks; Mercury = logical-linguistic integration of those blocks; Mars = hardware engineering drive.

D10 (Dasamsa) Dasha Determination

Lagna: ~24–25° Virgo → Leo Navamsa (not Vargottama, not Venus Navamsa)

No special conditions from Lagna:

  • Lagna not Vargottama
  • Lagna lord not in 7th
  • 7th lord not in Lagna
  • 10th lord not in 10th
  • Sun not in Lagna

From Chandra Lagna: Moon at 13°32' Aquarius → Virgo Navamsa (Moolatrikona) in D10Saptarishi Dasha condition holds — but Moon is in an inimical sign, weaker than Lagna. After testing, the Saptarishi (Sadasha) Dasha did not produce sensible results (Venus Antardasha showing job loss was logically impossible for a 9th lord in 10th house in friendly sign).

Conclusion: Lagna dominates here. Fall back to:

Criteria Value
D10 Lagna degree ~25° Virgo = even sign, second half
Hora Sun Hora (even sign, second half)
Paksha Krishna Paksha
Rule Vimshottari from Ardra

Event Verification (Vimshottari from Ardra, D10)

Event Period Planet Logic
Out of job (Oct 2002) Jupiter Maha / Mars Antardasha Jupiter = 4th/7th lord (7th = loss of service); Mars = 8th lord aspecting 10th with 12th lord Fits: bad planets for career
Rejoined job (Oct 2005) Jupiter Maha / Rahu Antardasha Rahu = 6th lord of service Fits (borderline): 6th lord gave service
Job loss (Apr 2011) Saturn Maha / Mercury Antardasha / Saturn Pratyantardasha Saturn = neutral planet; from Mercury (Antardasha lord), Saturn is 3rd/4th lord in 12th → break from career Fits at Pratyantardasha level

[!NOTE] The 2011 job loss fell near the end of Mercury Antardasha (which ended July 3, 2011). Ketu Antardasha likely started slightly early (events can precede the exact dasha start). Ketu = 3rd lord in 10th (break from career), closer to Jupiter in Gemini (slightly malefic), aspecting 10th.

Career Prediction Going Forward

Period Dasha Nature Outlook
~Jul 2011–Jul 2012 Saturn / Ketu Antardasha Ketu = slight malefic, 3rd lord in 10th Difficult; pursue contract work (3rd lord energy)
~Jul 2012–Jul 2015 Saturn / Venus Antardasha Venus = 9th lord in 10th, Lagna lord in 9th (from Saturn) Strong period for employment — Yogakaraka results
May–Aug 2012 Saturn / Venus (peak window) Best Antardasha + economic window Best window to seek new job

[!WARNING] PVR noted (as of class date ~2011) that a significant economic downturn was anticipated in the next 1–2 years. Avoid starting a new business unless it is recession-proof. Saturn (6th lord exalted in 2nd) favors service over business for this chart.

📊 Tajika Annual Chart Analysis (D10)

Year 2010–2011 Tajika (Sarvatomukha) Chart Analysis

Chart: 31 Aug 2010, ~04:15 AM, Visakhapatnam Lagna: ~11° Sagittarius (Jupiter) Key question: Does this chart show job loss?

House Planets Assessment
Lagna Sun (9th lord) 9th lord in Lagna = great blessing; functional benefic
3rd (break from career) Venus (6th/11th lord — rank malefic), Moon (8th lord), Mars (5th/12th lord — neutral) Three planets, mostly malefic — strongly indicates career break
10th (empty) Covered by 10th lord Moon in 3rd

Moon–Saturn interaction: Moon at 7°24' Aquarius; Saturn at 7°30' Leo — exact Samsaptaka (mutual 7th aspect). Moon (8th lord, inimical sign) + Saturn aspect = depression, setbacks. Strongest indicator of job difficulty.

Dasha in Tajika Chart

Sun is in Lagna (strong, at 15° vs Lagna at 11°) → Sashtiayoni Dasha applies without doubt

Dasha Dates Verdict
Moon Mahadasha Apr 3 – May 10 Moon = 8th lord in 3rd (inimical sign) — malefic
Moon / Venus Antardasha ~Apr 10 – Apr 14 Venus = rank malefic in 3rd
Combined: Moon + Venus in 3rd ~April 12, 2011 Job loss event — perfect match

[!IMPORTANT] In Tajika annual charts, the dasha applicable changes every year based on the conditions in that year's chart. Do not carry over the dasha choice from the natal or a previous year's chart. Each annual chart is evaluated independently.

Year 2011–2012 Tajika Chart

Chart: 1 Sep 2011, ~04:15 AM, Visakhapatnam Lagna: ~19° Libra (Pisces Navamsa — no special dasha conditions apply) Lagna in: Even sign, second half = Chandra Hora; Shukla Chaturthi = Shukla Paksha → Regular Vimshottari from Krittika

Period Dasha Outlook
Early Sep 2011 Mercury (10th lord — borderline) Small window for contract work
Sep 26 – Nov 25, 2011 Venus Antardasha Venus = Lagna lord in 5th — recognition, some opportunity
May–Aug 2012 Saturn Antardasha (Yogakaraka) Best window for landing employment

🔮 Vimshamsa (D20) Spiritual Analysis

Lagna: ~20° Taurus → Sun Hora (even sign, second half), Krishna Paksha → Vimshottari from Ardra

D20 House Strengths

House Planets Spiritual Significance
6th 6th lord + nodes Karma Yoga — overcoming obstacles through selfless action
12th Saturn (Yogakaraka, debilitated) + Mars (12th lord with Ketu, aspecting 12th) Detachment, renunciation — Yogakaraka blesses 12th house
5th (Virgo) Mercury (own sign, 2nd/5th lord) Mantra, Pura Punya — Mercury = Ishta Devata; Dharma Devata

Chara Dasha (D20)

Dasha Period Theme
Libra (6th house) ~current Karma Yoga — work through obstacles
Virgo (5th house) 2014–2017 Mantra sadhana; 12th from Atmakaraka → spiritual progress
Leo (4th house) 2017 onwards Jupiter (8th lord) in Advitra Rasi → occult experiences

Vimshottari from Ardra (D20)

Dasha Period Theme
Saturn Maha Since ~1995, ~5 more years Excellent — Yogakaraka in 12th (detachment), strong sadhana period
Mercury Maha ~2016–2032 Even better — Mercury in own sign, 2nd/5th lord, trine from Lagna lord; Ishta Devata (Vishnu); Dharma Devata; aspecting 8th house

[!TIP] The Atmakaraka is Mars. Mercury is the 9th lord in the 9th house from Atmakaraka and the 12th lord from Atmakaraka — making him both Ishta Devata and Dharma Devata. Worship: Om Namo Narayanaya, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, Om Vishnave Namah, Vishnu Sahasranama.

Conclusion on D20: Spiritual life is already on a strong trajectory. No remedies needed. The 2017–2032 Mercury Dasha period will be particularly profound for spiritual experiences and detachment.
