🔧 Narayan Dasha Technicalities — Opening Q&A {#narayan-dasha-q-a}
Saturn & Ketu Exceptions in Dasha Direction
[!IMPORTANT] These exceptions apply when Saturn or Ketu occupy the sign from which Narayan Dasha starts (stronger of Lagna / 7th house). They override the default mobile/fixed/dual sign direction rules.
| Planet in Starting Sign | Exception Rule | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| ♄ Saturn (Shani) | Always go forward 1→2→3→4 (Brahma's progression), regardless of sign type | Saturn is Manda (slow) — prefers simple, straightforward, forward progression. Dislikes jumps or reversal. |
| 🐲 Ketu | Go in the reverse direction of whatever the normal rule would be | Ketu wants to go against the stream — reversal of the normal flow |
| Both Saturn + Ketu | Determine which is stronger; use the exception of the stronger | Standard strength criteria apply |
Software handling: JHora automatically detects and applies the correct exception. The "Exception" dropdown in the Dasha options allows researchers to override this for experimentation. For normal use, only the divisional chart (Rasi / D24 / D10 / Navamsa) needs to be changed.
[!NOTE] Rahu vs. Ketu strength — If alone in a sign (Rasi chart), both share the same strength since they are always exactly 180° apart. In divisional charts they can be in the same sign; then Moola Trikona distinguishes: Virgo = Rahu's Moola Trikona (Rahu stronger); Pisces = Ketu's Moola Trikona (Ketu stronger). If no such distinction is apparent, default to Rahu as inherently dominant. Being confused between Rahu and Ketu is far less critical than confusing Jupiter and Rahu — they are essentially one body (northern/southern node of the Moon).
Parivarthana (Exchange) in the Three-Parts Rule
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When deciding Vrishabha vs. Vrishadhaya rasi for a lord (timing result delivery) | Ignore Parivarthana completely. Look at the planet's actual position. |
| When deciding sub-period sequencing | Ignore Parivarthana — see where the planet physically sits |
| When listing the planet's yogas (results it gives) | Include Parivarthana as a yoga. E.g., exchange 8th↔10th lord = tension in career; exchange 5th↔10th lord = good fame in career |
| When does the Parivarthana yoga give its result? | In the last quarter (benefic planet) or second quarter (malefic planet) of that planet's sub-period — the quarter when yoga results are delivered |
🌍 Introduction to Mundane Astrology {#intro-mundane}
Mundane astrology is the application of astrological techniques to entities other than individual human beings — countries, companies, organizations, institutions.
[!NOTE] A nation has no fixed paramayus (maximum longevity) the way humans do in Kali Yuga (120 years for Vimshottari). Parashara taught different pramaises for horses, elephants, crows, etc. A country's pramais is arguably far longer than 120 years, making compressed Vimshottari Dasha in annual charts the most reliable technique — the Dasha is scaled to a single year regardless of pramais.
When Was a Country "Born"?
| Country | Birth Event | Controversy? |
|---|---|---|
| 🇮🇳 India | August 15, 1947, midnight — Independence | Very little. A completely new entity started. |
| 🇺🇸 USA | July 4, 1776 — Declaration of Independence | High. Ten+ different charts exist; exact signing time unknown (ranges over ~10 hours); no single chart gives satisfactory results. |
| 🇮🇶 Iraq | Modern state borders / current constitution | Highly controversial; new entity started recently but still debated. |
Key principle: Annual new year charts circumvent the birth-time problem entirely — they are cast for specific astronomical events (solstices, equinoxes, lunations) at the capital city, and the entire Vimshottari Dasha is compressed to ~1 year.
☀️ Indian Solar Calendars — Overview {#solar-calendars}
Solar calendars (Sauramana) are based on Sun's ingress into zodiac signs (sidereal, not tropical). One month = the period Sun remains in one sign (~30 days); each month is named after the sign.
| New Year Chart | Trigger | Traditional Purpose | Capital Used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha Sankranti | Sun enters ♈ Aries | High-level political events — intrigues, power moves by major players | Capital of country of interest |
| Makara Sankranti | Sun enters ♑ Capricorn | Mass-level political events — how masses respond to politics | Capital of country of interest |
| Ardra Pravesha | Sun enters Ardra nakshatra (6°40′ ♊ Gemini) | Meteorological — rainfall, weather for the year | Capital of country of interest |
[!NOTE] Why Capricorn for Kali Yuga? Capricorn is ruled by Saturn (tamasic) and is the exaltation sign of Mars — the ruling planet of Kali Yuga. Jupiter (dharma) is debilitated there. Two tamasic planets have an extremely favorable relationship with Capricorn, making it the signature sign of this yuga.
Day definition for Solar New Year: Controversy exists over whether to count the new year from sunrise, noon, or sunset on the Sankranti day. Noon is often preferred because Sun is in the 10th house (most powerful, called Agni Muhurta), but this is not absolute — on a given day, Sun may be the 8th lord in the 10th, making noon not necessarily ideal.
🌕 Indian Lunar Calendars — Overview {#lunar-calendars}
Lunar calendars (Chandramana) track the conjunction of Sun and Moon (new moon, Amavasya) as the month start event. Month names come from the nakshatra Moon occupies on the full moon day within that month.
Amanta Calendar (Most Common)
Month begins at Shukla Pratipada (day after Amavasya — new moon). Month ends at Amavasya.
| New Year Chart | Sun–Moon Conjunction Sign | Traditional Name | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaitra Shukla Pratipada | ♓ Pisces | Chaitra Masa start | General mundane events; mass feelings; overall country mood |
| Kartika Shukla Pratipada | ♎ Libra | Kartika Masa start (Diwali new year) | Financial matters — economy, stock markets, business; Libra = sign of balance & commerce |
| Ashada Shukla Pratipada | ♊ Gemini | Ashada Masa start | Weather patterns, natural calamities (Gemini = 3rd sign, governs natural phenomena) |
| Magha Shukla Pratipada | ♑ Capricorn | Magha Masa start (Chinese New Year equivalent) | Kali Yuga strife, social unrest, adharma events |
[!TIP] Logic behind the signs:
- Libra → balance → business/finance
- Gemini → 3rd sign of natural zodiac → climate, bold initiatives, natural events
- Capricorn → Kali Yuga sign → strife, moral decline
- Pisces → general; Moon/mass feelings
Multiple New Year Charts — Correct Usage
[!IMPORTANT] Different communities in India use different calendars based on regional tradition. Scientifically, each calendar reveals different domains — do not try to predict everything from one chart.

📅 Full Moon (Shuklanta) Calendar {#shuklanta-calendar}
In Shuklanta calendar, the month begins at full moon (Purnima). Used in Orissa, Bengal, and some Tamil communities (promoted by scholar Sanjay Rath).
Rationale for spiritual focus: Sun = Atma (soul) — natural significator of the 1st house. Moon = mind and desires. When Moon is exactly opposite Sun (full moon), Moon is in the 7th from Sun, meaning Moon is in the house of desires relative to Sun. The mind desires the soul — a spiritually elevated state. Full moon is therefore auspicious for pujas, homas, and spiritual propitiation.
| Purnima Chart | Sun Position | Moon Position | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaishakha Purnima | ♈ Aries (20°+) | ♎ Libra (opposite) | Spiritual events, religious leaders, dharma in country |
[!NOTE] The month name always corresponds to the nakshatra Moon occupies at full moon: Chaitra masa → Moon in Chitra nakshatra at Purnima; Vaishakha masa → Moon in Vishakha nakshatra; Jyeshtha masa → Moon in Jyeshtha nakshatra; etc. This naming convention suggests full moon was the original reference point, and the new-moon calendar was derived later in Kali Yuga.

📊 Houses of a Country Chart {#house-meanings-country}
| House | In Individual Chart | In Country's Mundane Chart |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body, overall existence | Country's overall existence and vitality; how people feel generally |
| 2nd | Wealth, family, speech | National resources — finances, food, agriculture, natural resources, staff |
| 3rd | Siblings, boldness, communication | Initiative, military boldness, natural climate phenomena |
| 4th | Home, mother, comforts | Masses at ground level, land, agriculture |
| 5th | Intellect, children, power | Intellectual capacity, power, leadership quality |
| 6th | Enemies, diseases, debts | Opposition party, enemies of the nation, wars |
| 7th | Spouse, business partnerships | Foreign policy, diplomatic relations, interactions with other nations |
| 8th | Longevity, hidden, change | Instability, anxiety of populace, major changes, unrest, debt |
| 9th | Dharma, guru, luck | Judiciary, churches/temples, spiritual leaders, religious leaders, dharma |
| 10th | Career, karma, achievement | Executive wing of government; governance/administration (inanimate); 10th lord = the president/ruler (animated) |
| 11th | Gains, friends, elder siblings | National gains, allies, friendly nations |
| 12th | Losses, isolation, liberation | National losses, expenditures, foreign outflow |
[!TIP] 10th house vs. 10th lord distinction:
- 10th house = the administration, governance (inanimate circumstance)
- 10th lord = the president/ruler — the living, animated driving force behind that house
- Planets occupying 10th house = other influences intervening in governance (lobbyists, judges, generals with their own agendas)
- Planets aspecting 10th house = their desires and special interventions
Opposition party = 6th from 10th = 3rd house (and its lord)
🇺🇸 Live Analysis: US Chaitra Shukla Pratipada 2004 {#us-chaitra-2004}
Chart: March 20, 2004, ~5:42 PM EST, Washington DC
Lagna: Leo ♌
Key feature: Sun (Lagna lord) in 8th house (Pisces) + Jupiter (8th lord) in Lagna → Parivarthana between 1st and 8th = Dur Yoga
[!WARNING] A 1st–8th exchange is always malefic regardless of planetary friendship. Even Sun–Jupiter friendship does not override the house lordship damage.
| House | Key Placement | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Jupiter (8th lord) | Country's existence governed by anxiety and change |
| 8th | Sun (Lagna lord) + Moon (12th lord) + Gulika at ~6° | Gulika exactly conjunct Sun — intense poison/trouble signature during Sun dasha |
| 9th | Dharma sthana (clean) | — |
| 10th | Mars (9th lord) in exchange with Venus (10th lord in 9th) | Raj Yoga — but Venus/Mars are terrible enemies → results come with friction |
| 3rd | Ketu (aspected by Jupiter + Mars via Rashi Drishti) | Headless aggression; Ketu = thoughtless military posturing; Jupiter's aspect = some logical second-thoughts creep in |
| 11th | Saturn (6th lord) | Saturn's agenda = war + selfish foreign policy; in house of friends → pressuring allies to support war |
| 11th lord | In 8th house | Friendships in the world not favorable |
Compressed Vimshottari Dasha — Key Periods
| Dasha Period | Dates (approx.) | Key Planet | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Feb – Mar 2004 | Jupiter in Lagna (5th lord) | New beginning; relative calm; signals to other nations for compromise; Condoleezza Rice/Bush European tour |
| Sun | Later period | Sun in 8th + Gulika exact | Anxiety peak; poisoned period; no peace for the country |
| Moon | Oct 12 – Nov 13 2004 | Moon (12th lord) in 8th — Maranakara | Not favorable for foreign policy missions |
| Mercury | Also active | Mercury (2nd + 11th lord) in 8th | Debt top of mind; country concerned about borrowing |
Election timing (Moon–Mercury period): Elections fell in Moon dasha, Mercury antardasha. Interestingly, across six US elections studied, the antardasha at election time is always Mercury — consistent with Mercury being the karaka for vote-counting, tallying all views and arriving at one result.
[!NOTE] Why this chart doesn't show election winner: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada is the general public mood chart. To see elections (high-level political mechanics), use Makara Sankranti chart instead.
🗳️ Election Analysis: US Makara Sankranti 2004 {#us-election-2004}
Chart: January 14, 2004, ~1:14 PM EST, Washington DC (Sun entering Capricorn)
Purpose: Mass-level political events including elections
Key Placements
| Planet | House / Position | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Venus (Lagna lord + 5th lord) | 9th house | Lagna lord in trine — country's well-being expressed through blessed 5th-lord results |
| 10th lord (Saturn + Rahu as co-lords of Capricorn Lagna) | — | Saturn determined stronger (aspected by both Mercury and its dispositor; Rahu only aspected by Jupiter = score 2 vs. 1) |
| Saturn (10th lord) | — | Stronger of the two co-lords = primary karaka for the president/ruler |
| Venus from Saturn (as Lagna) | 5th house (trine lord in trine) | Extremely favorable — 5th = power; blessings; "he got lucky" |
| Moon (3rd lord) | — | Opposition party leader (Kerry) seen from 3rd lord |
| Venus from Moon | 6th house | Maraka position; end of power-quest; protection of Kerry's cause is destroyed |
flowchart LR
A[Makara Sankranti 2004] --> B{Who is 10th lord?}
B --> C[Saturn stronger than Rahu\naspected by Mercury 2x vs Rahu 1x]
C --> D[From Saturn as Lagna:\nVenus = 5th lord in 5th/9th]
D --> E[Trine lord in trine = great blessing]
E --> F[Bush re-elected with luck\nappeared as landslide]

G --> H[Moon = 3rd lord\nVenus from Moon = 6th house]
H --> I[Maraka position\nProtection of cause destroyed]
I --> J[Kerry + Democrats suffer heavy losses]
[!TIP] Identifying the opponent in mundane charts:
- Ruling administration = 10th house
- Opposition party = 6th from 10th = 3rd house (and 3rd lord)
- The actual leader of opposition = 3rd lord (see from 3rd lord as Lagna for that person's fortunes)
💰 Financial New Year: US vs India 2004–2005 {#financial-new-year}
Chart used: Kartika Shukla Pratipada (Sun–Moon conjunction in ♎ Libra) — November 12, 2004, ~9:28 AM EST
US Financial Chart
| Factor | Placement | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Gemini ♊ or Libra (chart-dependent) | — |
| Both Lagna lords | 12th house | Lagna existence is depleted |
| Mercury (8th + 11th lord) | In Lagna | 8th lord's agenda = borrowing, anxiety; country's financial identity defined by borrowing |
| Overall verdict | — | Terrible year financially for US. Debt on the rise, borrowing continues, anxiety about deficit. |
India Financial Chart
| Factor | Placement | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Gemini ♊ | — |
| Lagna lord Mercury | 6th house (Upachaya) | 6th is an Upachaya (accumulation house); Mercury is naturally comfortable in 6th — good for accumulation of wealth |
| Venus (5th lord) + Jupiter (10th lord) | 4th house — forming Raja Yoga | Both aspecting Lagna; their Raja Yoga infuses Lagna with blessings |
| Venus = 5th lord | In 4th; also 12th lord = minor losses | Predominantly 5th lord results (power/blessings) with some 12th (losses) |
| Overall verdict | — | Good financial year for India. Better than US. Some losses but country accumulates wealth. |
[!NOTE] Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) literally mean "accumulation." Malefics and accumulation-oriented planets (including Mercury) perform well in Upachaya — they fulfill their agenda of building up.
🌀 Vaishakha Purnima Spiritual Chart 2004 {#vaishakha-purnima}
Chart: Full moon when Sun in ♈ Aries (~20°47′) and Moon exactly opposite in ♎ Libra
Purpose: Spiritual health of the country — dharma, spiritual leaders, religious institutions
US Vaishakha Purnima Analysis
| Factor | Placement | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 9th house | Moon + Ketu (within 3°) | Solar eclipse signature — Ketu eclipsing Moon/Dhatukarka in the house of Dharma |
| Eclipse axis | 3rd–9th | Dharma sthana afflicted by eclipse — adharma will be done in the country |
| Moon = Dhatukarka | Eclipsed | Dhatukarka = spiritual leaders / guru. Troubles for spiritual leaders in the country |
| 9th lord Venus from 9th lord as Lagna | Papakartari from 4 malefics | Saturn + Mars in 2nd; Rahu + Sun in 12th → spiritual leaders attacked from all fronts; possible imprisonment of spiritual leaders (Sun + Rahu in 12th = bandhana) |
[!WARNING] When Rahu/Ketu afflict Sun or Moon, it is extremely serious — far more harmful than Rahu/Ketu afflicting other planets. Here, the eclipse in the 9th house directly damages the country's dharmic framework.
🔮 Chaitra Shukla Pratipada 2005 Forecast {#chaitra-2005-forecast}
Chart: April 8, 2005, afternoon, Washington DC (during solar eclipse)
Notable: New year starts during a solar eclipse at ~29° Pisces–Aries (Gandanta — border of fire and water signs)
[!WARNING] Gandanta zones (last navamsa of water signs + first navamsa of fire signs):
- ♓ Pisces ↔ ♈ Aries border
- ♋ Cancer ↔ ♌ Leo border
- ♏ Scorpio ↔ ♐ Sagittarius border
These are deeply inauspicious. Rahu–Ketu at 29° Pisces/Virgo during the eclipse, eclipsing Sun and Moon at the Gandanta = very inauspicious chart start.
US 2005 Chart Key Points
| Factor | Placement | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna lord | In 8th house | Anxiety continues for the country |
| Lagna lord afflicted by | Gandanta Rahu | Compounded difficulty |
| 6th house | Exalted Mars ♈ | More military aggression from US; potential new conflicts |
| 7th house | Venus (exalted, 9th lord) + Rahu | More diplomacy than previously; exalted Venus = cooperative foreign relations |
| Lagna | Retrograde Mercury (in Nica) + Ketu | Confusion, indecisiveness in policy; Mercury weak = "doing this, then that, getting confused" |
| Overall | — | More turbulence for US, unfortunately. Aggression continues, some new diplomatic efforts, but overall anxiety remains high. |
[!NOTE] Exalted Venus with Rahu in 7th: Venus + Rahu are both karakas for diplomacy. "The teacher of demons exalted with his favorite demon" → more diplomatic engagement with other nations, though tinged with demonic (clever, manipulative) tactics.
🌟 Vimshottari Dasha Seed Selection in Mundane Charts {#vimshottari-seed-mundane}
In natal charts, Moon's Janma Nakshatra is almost always used as the Vimshottari seed. In mundane charts, this must be checked.
Seed Strength Test (JHora "Vimshottari Seed Strength Comparison")
Count planets in Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from each candidate seed:
| Seed | Condition | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Moon (Janma Nakshatra) | Default; valid if Moon has most planets in Kendra | Use standard Chandra Vimshottari |
| Lagna | Lagna has more planets in Kendra than Moon | Use Lagna Vimshottari — even marginally stronger Lagna → prefer it in mundane charts |
| Utpanna Tara | 5th star from Moon has more Kendra planets | Use Utpanna Vimshottari |
| Sun | Sun has more Kendra planets | Use Sun-based Vimshottari |
| Mandi | Mandi has more Kendra planets | Use Mandi-based Vimshottari |
[!IMPORTANT] In mundane charts, unlike natal charts, do not default to Moon if Lagna is stronger — even marginally. Lagna Vimshottari in mundane charts gives "far better results."
