Software handling: JHora automatically detects and applies the correct exception. The "Exception" dropdown in the Dasha options allows researchers to override this for experimentation. For normal use, only the divisional chart (Rasi / D24 / D10 / Navamsa) needs to be changed.

[!NOTE] Rahu vs. Ketu strength — If alone in a sign (Rasi chart), both share the same strength since they are always exactly 180° apart. In divisional charts they can be in the same sign; then Moola Trikona distinguishes: Virgo = Rahu's Moola Trikona (Rahu stronger); Pisces = Ketu's Moola Trikona (Ketu stronger). If no such distinction is apparent, default to Rahu as inherently dominant. Being confused between Rahu and Ketu is far less critical than confusing Jupiter and Rahu — they are essentially one body (northern/southern node of the Moon).

Parashara taught different pramaises for horses, elephants, crows, etc. A country's pramais is arguably far longer than 120 years, making compressed Vimshottari Dasha in annual charts the most reliable technique — the Dasha is scaled to a single year regardless of pramais.

When Was a Country "Born"?

Key principle: Annual new year charts circumvent the birth-time problem entirely — they are cast for specific astronomical events (solstices, equinoxes, lunations) at the capital city, and the entire Vimshottari Dasha is compressed to ~1 year.

☀️ Indian Solar Calendars — Overview {#solar-calendars}

Solar calendars (Sauramana) are based on Sun's ingress into zodiac signs (sidereal, not tropical). One month = the period Sun remains in one sign (~30 days); each month is named after the sign.

[!NOTE] Why Capricorn for Kali Yuga? Capricorn is ruled by Saturn (tamasic) and is the exaltation sign of Mars — the ruling planet of Kali Yuga. Jupiter (dharma) is debilitated there. Two tamasic planets have an extremely favorable relationship with Capricorn, making it the signature sign of this yuga.

Day definition for Solar New Year: Controversy exists over whether to count the new year from sunrise, noon, or sunset on the Sankranti day. Noon is often preferred because Sun is in the 10th house (most powerful, called Agni Muhurta), but this is not absolute — on a given day, Sun may be the 8th lord in the 10th, making noon not necessarily ideal.

🌕 Indian Lunar Calendars — Overview {#lunar-calendars}

Lunar calendars (Chandramana) track the conjunction of Sun and Moon (new moon, Amavasya) as the month start event. Month names come from the nakshatra Moon occupies on the full moon day within that month.

📅 Full Moon (Shuklanta) Calendar {#shuklanta-calendar}

In Shuklanta calendar, the month begins at full moon (Purnima). Used in Orissa, Bengal, and some Tamil communities (promoted by scholar Sanjay Rath).

Rationale for spiritual focus: Sun = Atma (soul) — natural significator of the 1st house. Moon = mind and desires. When Moon is exactly opposite Sun (full moon), Moon is in the 7th from Sun, meaning Moon is in the house of desires relative to Sun. The mind desires the soul — a spiritually elevated state. Full moon is therefore auspicious for pujas, homas, and spiritual propitiation.

[!NOTE] The month name always corresponds to the nakshatra Moon occupies at full moon: Chaitra masa → Moon in Chitra nakshatra at Purnima; Vaishakha masa → Moon in Vishakha nakshatra; Jyeshtha masa → Moon in Jyeshtha nakshatra; etc. This naming convention suggests full moon was the original reference point, and the new-moon calendar was derived later in Kali Yuga.

• Planets aspecting 10th house = their desires and special interventions
