The Standard (Sign-Based) Approach

Most astrologers add scores in a particular rashi (sign) across all eight ashtavargas to determine the strength of a bhava. E.g., for Gemini lagna, they sum all scores in Gemini across Sun, Moon, Mars... etc. ashtavargas.

Teacher's Refined (House-Based) Approach

[!IMPORTANT] The sign occupying a house differs for each reference point. First house from lagna is Gemini. First house from Sun (in Libra) is Libra. First house from Moon (in Pisces) is Pisces. The strength of the first bhava should aggregate all eight "first house" scores, one from each reference.

[!NOTE] This is the teacher's own research finding, not from a traditional parampara. But it is found to be empirically reliable and is now in the public release of JHora.

Always distinguish:

• Natal (Janma) chart = inherent potential for the entire life; not what happens at a specific time
• Transit (Gochara) chart = current planetary positions; how they activate or suppress natal potentials

[!TIP] For transit analysis, always keep transit positions in Rashi (outer chart). Only the natal reference (inner chart) can be changed to a divisional chart to focus on a particular domain.

• Confirms the sukha lopa is specifically career-related (not just general mental unease)

Transit from Natal Dasamsa Mars (Professional Initiative)

Mars is the Yoga Karaka for this chart (owns a trine and a quadrant in Dasamsa). Both Saturn and Jupiter are currently unfavorable from Dasamsa Mars.

7th House from Arudha Lagna — Competition

The 7th from Arudha Lagna = who you appear to the world to be competing with.

Bill Gates has Sun in the 7th from AL → appears to be fighting powerful, authoritative government forces. In Sun Dasha, this becomes especially pronounced.

10th House from Arudha Lagna — Perceived Karma

The 10th from AL = karma the world perceives you to be doing (as distinct from the actual karma within, shown by 10th from Lagna).

🔭 Prastara Ashtakavarga — Identifying Cooperating Planets

Bhinn Ashtakavarga gives the aggregate score (0–8) per house per planet. Prastara Ashtakavarga (PAV) breaks that down to show which specific planets are contributing a favorable vote in each house.

How to Access in JHora

Click "Show PAV of Sun", "Show PAV of Moon" etc. within the Ashtakavarga panel. This shows, for each house, the list of planets casting favorable votes from that reference.

Use case: When Saturn is transiting a house where no planets cast favorable votes from Mars (your reference), that Saturn transit is unfavorable from the Mars perspective.

Hora lord (ruler of the year) = Moon:

• Lagna lord Venus in 9th (debilitated but in fortune house) → Yoga Karaka for Makara lagna → auspicious

"Hora lord Jupiter is the owner of the twelfth house (foreign land) in this chart. Rahu is the karaka for going abroad, sitting in the twelfth house. Lagna lord is in the ninth house. All these things together show that this is the year he will get his green card." — Teacher

Prediction: Either Rahu or Venus antardasa will deliver the green card — likely before September of the year. Venus is in Mercury's sign (Virgo); Mercury's sign connection to the word "green" noted humorously.

⚡ Harsha, Saada, Vimala — Viparita Yogas

Three "Viparita" (reversal) yogas formed when a dusthana lord (6th, 8th, or 12th) occupies its own house:

[!NOTE] The result of these yogas is modified by the nature of the planet. Jupiter in Harsha yoga → joyful, wise, unbothered. Mars in Harsha yoga → "fire in the cheer" — still optimistic but more aggressive.

In Kiran's 2005 annual Dasamsa chart: Sun is the 8th lord in the 8th house (Leo) → Saada yoga. Sun in Leo (Yama Saada) = Impassionate, dharmic straightforwardness with authority. Person says "That is wrong" — not "I think it might be wrong."
