📖 Chapter 86/88: Amavasya Dosha & Shanti Procedure
Opening Shloka
"Maitreya darshadatana mata pitro daridrata. Taddosha pariharaya shantim kuryad vijakshana."
Translation: "O Maitreya, for one born on Darsha (Amavasya), there will be poverty (daridrata) for the mother and father. For relief from that dosha, a learned person should undertake Shanti (pacification)."
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Who suffers | Parents (not primarily the child) |
| Nature of suffering | Poverty / deprivation (daridrata) |
| Remedy | Perform prescribed Shanti |
| Timing of Shanti | Ideally 21st day after birth; can be done at any age |
| BPHS chapter | Ch. 86 (Santanam) / Ch. 88 (GV Sharma) |
[!NOTE] Darsha etymologically = "when moon is just visible." Classical interpretation = Amavasya. Could also mean Shukla Pratipad. Teacher maintains the traditional Amavasya reading while acknowledging possible corruption in the tradition.
[!TIP] If parents are thriving, you may exercise judgment about whether Shanti is needed. But: "If you are suspicious, it's better to be safe and follow Parasara."

Step 1: Kalasha Sthapana
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Vessel | Metal bowl/kalash with water |
| Top | Coconut with turmeric paste |
| Cloth | Two cloths: yellow (top) + red (bottom) — tradition |
| Location | Southeast (Agneya) corner of the puja area |
| Mantra(s) | Three Vedic chants: (1) Sarve Samudra, (2) Apo Hishta, (3) a third unspecified Varuna mantra |
| Additives | Tender leaves (pallava) + roots (moola) + bark (tvacha) of: Udumbara, Vata, Ashwattha, Chuta (mango), and Neem trees |
| Gems | Five gems (pancharatnani) — select from Navaratnas; prefer the five more affordable ones |
[!WARNING] Translation error in GC Sharma / Santanam: they say "southwest" for kalasha placement. The Sanskrit says vahni-konake (vahni = Agni = fire = southeast). The correct direction is southeast.
Step 2: Invoke Devatas
| Devata | Mantra for Invocation | Idol Material |
|---|---|---|
| Moon (Chandra) | Aapyaayasva mantra | Gold, silver, or copper |
| Sun (Surya) | Savita mantra | Gold, silver, or copper |
- Perform Shodashopachara Puja (16-service worship) to both idols
- Rationale: Tithis are based on Sun-Moon angle; Sun + Moon are the presiding deities
Step 3: Homa Materials
| Offering | Item |
|---|---|
| Samidhas | Darbha grass / dry grass twigs (not just any wood) |
| Charu | Cooked food: wheat kheer (for Sun) + rice kheer (for Moon) |
| Mantras | Savitru mantra (for Sun) + Somo dhenum mantra (for Moon) |
| Count | 108 times each (or 28 times minimum) |
Step 4: Abhishekam
- After Homa: do udvasana (disinvoke the deities)
- Sprinkle the charged kalasha water on: baby + both parents
- Must be done by a priest who knows mantras (mantravit)
Step 5: Dakshina
- Give: black cow (krishna-dhenu), gold, silver to the officiating priest
- Karmic note: The priest accepting the dakshina takes on some karma of the child — only appropriate if the priest has sufficient spiritual caliber
Step 6: Feed the Learned
- Feed brahmanas / learned persons with a pleasant (su-dhī) heart — no grudging feelings
📖 Chapter 87: Krishna Chaturdashi Dosha — Six Divisions
"Darshyasya devayoh cha chandrabhaaskarayoh kramat prathimaam swarnajaam nityam raajateem taam rajan tatha."
The Krishna Chaturdashi tithi is divided into six equal parts (shadbhagesh). Results differ by part:
| One-Sixth | % Tithi Remaining in jHora | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (first 1/6) | 83.33% – 100% remaining | Auspicious (shubham) — no dosha |
| 2nd | 66.67% – 83.33% remaining | Pitṛṁ hanti — suffering/death of father |
| 3rd | 50.00% – 66.67% remaining | Mātaraṁ — suffering/death of mother |
| 4th | 33.33% – 50.00% remaining | Mātulaṁ — suffering/death of maternal uncle |
| 5th | 16.67% – 33.33% remaining | Vaṁsanāśanam — destruction of lineage/family |
| 6th (last 1/6) | 0% – 16.67% remaining | Dharanāśasya / Ātmano nāśa — loss of wealth OR self destroyed; worst division |
[!IMPORTANT] Only the first one-sixth is auspicious. The 2nd through 6th one-sixths require Shanti.
[!NOTE] Teacher example: Born when 85.99% of Krishna Chaturdashi remained → first one-sixth → no dosha. No Shanti needed for him.

🔢 How to Identify Which One-Sixth (jHora Method)
- Open the chart in jHora
- Note the "% remaining" of the Krishna Chaturdashi tithi at birth
- Apply this formula:
One-sixth boundaries:
1st: 83.33% to 100% remaining → Auspicious
2nd: 66.67% to 83.33% remaining → Father suffers
3rd: 50.00% to 66.67% remaining → Mother suffers
4th: 33.33% to 50.00% remaining → Maternal uncle suffers
5th: 16.67% to 33.33% remaining → Family/lineage destruction
6th: 0.00% to 16.67% remaining → Wealth lost / self destroyed (worst)
Example calculation:
- If jHora shows 28.3% remaining → falls in 5th one-sixth → vaṁsanāśanam → Shanti required
- If jHora shows 52.13% remaining → just above 50% → 3rd one-sixth → suffering to mother → Shanti required
🧘 Philosophical: Spiritual Caliber of the Priest
[!WARNING] Commercial remedies and fraud priests: A major teaching this class.
Key points:
- Dakshina transfers karma: The priest accepting dakshina takes some karma from the child. This requires the priest to have sufficient spiritual caliber (sadhana) to absorb/burn that karma
- Spiritual caliber signs: A truly calibrated priest is indifferent to money; if someone is "running after money," their mantras have limited impact
- Do it yourself if needed: Better to do the ritual yourself with devotion than hire a low-caliber priest. "If you have the devotion, maybe you can do a better job"
- Commercial fraud patterns:
- Priests who hold "monthly meetings" instead of actually performing the ritual
- Invented doshas ("Karkotaka Kalasarpa Maha Dosha") to create fear
- "Only my priest can do it" — a business arrangement between astrologer and priest
- Mantra mechanics: Correctly pronounced mantras with correct feeling (bhava) produce vibrations that charge the Akasha. Smoke from Homa carries this energy and impacts the Karana Sharira
- Water crystallography note: Japanese study showed that chanting "Om" near water creates orderly crystal structure vs. chaotic structure from violent music or microwave heating — consistent with Vedantic principle that consciousness impacts everything
