Condition: Ketu (Śikhi) and Venus (Śukra) placed in the Upada or the 2nd from Upada.

Result: Rakta pradararogārtā — spouse suffers from blood-related diseases and disorders involving blood flow.

Reasoning

Ketu + Venus = depletion of Venus-related fluids → blood disorders. Rakta Pradar literally means blood flowing out (hemorrhage, heavy menstrual issues, bleeding disorders).

Sanskrit: "Budhaketusthito tatra tadāsthisrāvasaṁyutā. Tatra sthāsa nirāhvarakā sadāsthijvarasaṁyutā."

Condition: Saturn, Rahu, AND Sun in Upada or 2nd from Upada.

Result: Asthijvara — literally "fever/heat in bones." Interpreted as: bone distress, possibly bone inflammation or conditions involving fever with bone pain.

Reasoning:

• Sun = fire element → fevers, high temperatures
• Saturn + Rahu = depletion + decay agents
• Sun's fire manifesting through bone-adjacent tissue = possible bone fever/inflammation

[!NOTE] The expression Asthijvara (fever of bones) is unusual Sanskrit. It could indicate: (1) bone marrow-related conditions, (2) febrile conditions affecting bones, or (3) generalized bone distress. The exact classical meaning may have some corruption in transmission, but the underlying planetary logic (Sun = fire = fever) is clear.

Sanskrit: "Sthulangi Budha Rahubhyam tatra sthābhyam dvijottamat."

Condition: Mercury and Rahu in the Upada or 2nd from Upada.

Result: Sthulangi — fat/obese body; the spouse will be very stout.

Reasoning:

• Mercury = earth element (Prithvi Tattva) → solid, heavy, structural
• Rahu = excess, expansion, illusion
• Mercury (earth) + Rahu (excess) = excess earth element → obesity, heaviness

Condition (Case 1): Mars (Kuja) and Saturn (Arki — "son of the Sun" = Saturn) in a Mercurial sign (Gemini or Virgo) in/near Upada.

Condition (Case 2): Mars and Saturn in a Martian sign (Aries or Scorpio) in/near Upada.

Result: Nāsikā roga — diseases of the nose; by extension, breathing-related diseases (bronchitis, asthma, nasal disorders).

The real principle: Mars must be (1) strong and (2) able to give ill-health — i.e., connected to the 6th/8th/12th house. If Mars is a functional benefic (e.g., Lagna lord), his presence with Saturn won't necessarily give breathing problems even in these signs.

👁️ Verse 21 — Jupiter + Saturn in Martian Sign: Ear & Eye Problems {#v21}

Sanskrit: (Continuation verse — in Martian sign, if Jupiter and Saturn are there)

Condition: Jupiter and Saturn in a Martian sign (Aries/Scorpio) in/near Upada.

Result: Problems with ears and eyes.

[!NOTE] The verse may contain a minor textual variation. The expected planet for vision is Sun (not Saturn), but the combination as stated is Jupiter + Saturn. One possibility: Jupiter indicates the hearing problem and the position in a Martian (fiery) sign with Saturn creates eye issues through a different mechanism. Some textual corruption may exist.

If a functional benefic planet aspects or conjoins the Upada or the 2nd from it, all these negative health results are cancelled or mitigated.

[!IMPORTANT] Parashara explicitly gives this blanket disclaimer. In practice, this makes evaluation complex because:

• Venus and Ketu might be in Upada, but Venus himself may be a benefic
• Other benefics may be aspecting
• The dominant influence determines the outcome The negative health results apply only when malefic influence is clearly dominant and no benefic is intervening.

In these verses, Parashara uses the Pancha Bhuta (Five Element) system rather than the Sapta Dhatu (Seven Tissue) system:

The Research Question

When predicting events (e.g., marriage) using Upada: does a transiting planet come close to the divisional longitude of the Upada at the time of the event?

Method

1. Find the divisional longitude of the relevant Pada in the chart of interest (e.g., Upada in D9/Navamsa)
2. Note the date/time of the event (marriage, divorce, child birth, etc.)
3. Look at the transit chart on that date — check if a relevant planet (e.g., 7th lord in Navamsa, Venus, Jupiter) is within 3–4 degrees of the Pada's divisional longitude

Orb and Accuracy

• Exact hit within minutes: occurs in some cases
• Typical orb: 1–3 degrees from the Pada's divisional longitude
• Location of transit observation: does not matter — the longitude is the same everywhere

Manual Calculation of Divisional Longitude

If the Pada falls at L degrees in its sign (e.g., 8°30' Gemini):

For D9 (Navamsa):
  Each Navamsa = 3°20' = 200'
  L in Navamsa sign = (L mod 3.333°) × 9
  
General formula for Dx:
  Position within current amsha = L - (floor(L / (30/x)) × (30/x))
  Divisional longitude = position_within_amsha × x

Example: L = 8°30' Gemini in D9
  8.5 / 3.333 = 2.55 → integer part = 2 → advancement = 2 × 3.333 = 6.667°
  Position within current Navamsa = 8.5 - 6.667 = 1.833°
  D9 longitude = 1.833 × 9 = 16.5° (i.e., 16°30' in its D9 sign)

Until that release, manually calculate using the formula above or use "User-defined Special Point" to track the position across charts.

• Rahu: In Gandanta (water-fire junction — most malefic nakshatra position); 6th lord afflicting Jupiter
• Rahu at 0°27' (Gandanta), Jupiter at 8°11' → Rahu's Gandanta energy afflicts Jupiter
