🗓️ Opening — Muhurta of New Class Time
The class was relocated. PVR notes the new time is being observed for its muhurta (Ashvaja Krishna Ekadashi, Shubha Yoga, Magha Nakshatra, Mesha Lagna with Raja Yoga) — noted as good but with a Chara Rasi quality suggesting future changes.
A brief recap from a Friday study group session: analysing the chart of a Vietnamese woman having trouble with her boss and looking for job change advice. This leads to the theoretical discussion below.
👔 Boss Relationship — L9 vs. A9 vs. 9th House
Q: To check exact issues with the boss, should we use L9, A9, or 9th house?
flowchart TD
Boss["Boss-related matters"]
Boss --> NHD["9th house in D10 (Dasamsa)\nGuidance received from boss\nNature of the relationship\nQuality of support/mentoring"]
Boss --> A9["A9 (Dharma Pada)\nTangible, visible interactions\nBoss praising/punishing, promotions\nAll observable workplace events"]
Boss --> L9["L9 (Arudha of 9th)\nFortune of boss himself\nWhether boss will be promoted/demoted\nBoss's own changes — external events"]
[!TIP] For "my boss is giving me a bad rating" → use 9th house and A9 in D10. For "is my boss going to get promoted or transferred?" → use L9.
💎 Gemstone Recommendation — Natal Chart Only
Q: Mercury is causing problems in the Tajika annual chart (TP) this year. Should we strengthen Mercury?
[!IMPORTANT] Gemstones are recommended based on the NATAL chart, not on the TP or annual chart.
Framework for Career Gemstone
- Find the planet(s) well-connected to 9th house (boss/guidance) and 5th house (recognition/fame) in D10 and Rasi
- Ensure the planet has no significant blemish in either chart
- Recommend that planet's gemstone
[!WARNING] A planet good in Rasi but bad in D10 may improve overall life while creating specific career problems. Conversely, praying to a planet is always safe — unlike gemstones, prayer accentuates only what is beneficial and reduces what is bad, without inadvertently strengthening malefic dimensions.
🕍 Jupiter as Religion / Propitiations for Non-Hindus
Q: For a Christian client, can we suggest praying to Jesus when Jupiter needs propitiation?
Hindu astrology does not have classical references mapping planetary deities to deities of other religions. Hinduism is well-documented; other religions are not mapped in this system.
PVR's answer for any religion:
- Jupiter = the teacher figure, the wise priest, the wise counselor
- For a true Christian who does not believe in idol worship: serve a priest — volunteer at a church or help a local pastor. That seva serves as propitiation for Jupiter.
| Planet | Hindu deity | Cross-religion equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Brihaspati / Vishnu / wise guru | Serve a priest, pastor, teacher |
| Sun | Surya / Shiva (for Gandanta) | Authority figure, leader |
| Mercury | Vishnu | Library, school, intellectual service |
| Moon | Devi / Divine Mother | Nursing home, caring for the elderly |
| Mars | Skanda / martial deities | Police volunteers, military support |
🌱 Shramadana — Secular Planetary Remedies
[!IMPORTANT] For secular clients who will not do mantras or pujas, suggest Shramadana (donation of labor) or Dhanadana (donation of money) to institutions or activities governed by the problematic/targeted planet.
flowchart LR
P["Planet to propitiate"]
P -->|Mercury| M["Volunteer at school or library\nDonate to education"]
P -->|Moon| Mo["Serve at nursing home\nCare for elderly or children"]
P -->|Jupiter| J["Serve a priest / temple / church\nDonate to religious institution"]
P -->|Mars| Ma["Help police or fire department\nVolunteer for emergency services"]
P -->|Saturn| S["Serve laborers or underprivileged\nDonate to organizations serving poor"]
P -->|Sun| Su["Serve authority figures\nDonate to solar/fire-related causes"]
P -->|Venus| V["Donate to arts, music, cultural causes\nServe women's organizations"]
"Either donation of money or giving your effort (Shramadana). If you do that, it can also help. And it is Satvik — even if a planet is bad for you, making the planet happier with you will reduce its displeasure and increase its pleasure."
Key difference from gemstones: This does NOT accentuate the planet's negative qualities. It builds a positive relationship with the planetary energy.
🧠 Dhimanta Yoga — Extended Definition
Q: Is Dhimanta Yoga formed by any two of 1st/3rd/5th/6th lord connections?
[!NOTE] Perfect Dhimanta Yoga = connection of all four — 1st, 5th, 3rd, and 6th lords.
The four components
| Lord | Represents | Role in Dhimanta |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Pure essence of being | Foundation of the yoga |
| 5th | Intelligence, wisdom, scholarship | The core intelligence |
| 3rd | Initiative, boldness | Applies the intelligence |
| 6th | Overcoming obstacles, problem-solving | Intelligence in action |
"Ideal Dhimanta: pure essence (1st) + wisdom/scholarship (5th) + initiative to apply it (3rd) + applying it to overcome obstacles (6th). But this is rarely found together. Even 2-3 factors connected gives some level of Dhimanta Yoga."
The classical formulation is often stated as 5th+6th lord, but any two or three of these four lords in connection qualifies as a weaker form.
🪐 Bhadra Maha Purusha Yoga + Retrograde Mercury
Case: Mercury exalted in a Kendra (4th house, Kanya/Virgo) but also retrograde.
Q: Does this still give Bhadra Maha Purusha Yoga?
[!IMPORTANT] Technically yes — exalted Mercury in a Kendra = Bhadra Yoga by the rule. But retrograde + exalted = Ucha Bhanga (cancellation of exaltation). The yoga is therefore very weak.
Maha Purusha Yoga — Retrograde Rule
flowchart TD
Y["Maha Purusha Yoga\n(planet exalted or in own sign in Kendra)"]
Y --> R["If in OWN SIGN:\nRetrograde does NOT cancel the yoga\n(e.g., Jupiter in Pisces 4th house for Sag Lagna)"]
Y --> E["If EXALTED:\nRetrograde = Ucha Bhanga\nYoga becomes very weak"]
Y --> A["Afflictions by malefics:\nDo NOT cancel Maha Purusha Yoga\nOnly weaken the results slightly"]
"Affliction doesn't really matter for Maha Purusha Yoga. But if there is retrogression along with the exaltation, that's a problem. Being in own sign + retrograde doesn't have the same impact."
⚖️ Debilitated Trine Lord vs. Quadrant Lord vs. Dusthana Lord
Q: If the 5th or 9th lord is debilitated, what is the impact?
flowchart TD
D["Debilitated planet"]
D --> TL["Trine lord\n(1st, 5th, 9th)\nBad — trine lords give results\neffortlessly from past blessings.\nDebilitation = unable to give those blessings.\nWorse than quadrant debilitation."]
D --> QL["Quadrant lord\n(4th, 7th, 10th)\nNeutral — quadrant lords\nmake you work hard.\nDebilitation = harder to work,\nbut not terrible."]
D --> DL["Dusthana lord\n(3rd, 6th, 8th, 12th)\nGood — debilitation of\nobstacle-givers reduces obstacles.\nBest case for debilitation."]
"Trine lords are supposed to give blessings easily, without effort, as a result of previous good karmas. If the planet is debilitated, he can't give those results — like someone who wants to help you but his hands are tied."
[!TIP] Debilitated trine lord + worn gemstone = recommended. The planet wants to help you but lacks strength. Wearing its gemstone, especially during the planet's dasha or a strong transit period (exaltation/own sign), amplifies the planet's capacity to give its intended positive results.
Optimizing Timing for Debilitated Trine Lord Worship
Pick a time when:
- The debilitated planet's Dasha is running (more control over life)
- The planet is transiting through exaltation or own sign
- → Then pray to it or wear its gemstone for maximum effect
✨ Neechabhanga Raja Yoga — Rules
Q: What are the conditions for Neechabhanga?
Three classical conditions:
| # | Condition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Planet is debilitated and retrograde | Mars in Cancer, retrograde |
| 2 | Planet debilitated in Rasi but exalted in Navamsa | Moon in Scorpio (Rasi), exalted in Taurus (Navamsa) |
| 3 | The planet exalted in that sign OR the sign lord is in a Kendra from Lagna or Moon | Mars debilitated in Cancer: Jupiter (exalted in Cancer) or Moon (owns Cancer) must be in Kendra from Lagna or Moon |
[!WARNING] The planet with exaltation in that sign must be in a Kendra — just being conjunct the debilitated planet in the same house does NOT constitute Neechabhanga.
Example: Sagittarius Lagna, Moon in Scorpio, Mars in 10th house (Virgo).
- Nobody is exalted in Scorpio, so clause 3 applies to the sign lord Mars
- Mars is in 10th from Lagna = Kendra → Neechabhanga for Moon
Nuance: Since Moon is the 8th lord here, Neechabhanga for an 8th lord is less desirable than for a trine or quadrant lord. Neechabhanga Raja Yoga of a Dusthana lord is the weakest form.
🧑💼 Live Case — Relationship and Career Analysis
Data: December 2, 1963, 1:30 AM, Mumbai, India Lagna: Leo (at the far end, ~10°57' — very close to the Leo-Virgo cusp) Lagna determination: 48 seconds later → Virgo. Circumstantial evidence (authoritative, practical, not scholarly personality) supports Leo Lagna. Dasamsa unchanged regardless of 48-second difference.
Situation:
- Relationship of ~11 years with an employee (since 1994)
- Relationship "downgraded" July/August 2005 (she left the company, equity dispute)
- Now on make-or-break terms; he is ready to end it but has mixed feelings
- Career also impacted by the relationship's lingering complication
Chart Synopsis — Rasi
| Feature | Placement | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| UL (Upapada Lagna) | Pisces | With Jupiter (UL lord) — strong UL |
| Jupiter (UL lord) | UL in Pisces | Retrograde = very strong desire; not wanting to fully let go |
| Saturn (7th lord) | 6th house | Causes problems in relationship; doesn't fully break it (also 7th lord) |
| Mercury | In Gandanta | All Mercury-related matters exacerbated |
| Dasha | Saturn Mahadasha (since 2001, till 2021) | Long Saturn influence on relationship |
Why Jupiter Gave the Relationship (1994)
| UL | 8th from UL (2nd relationship) |
|---|---|
| Pisces | Libra (Venus) |
- UL lord = Jupiter → first relationship signified by Jupiter
- 8th from UL = Libra → second relationship signified by Venus
- The 1994 relationship started in Jupiter Dasha → this was the FIRST UL-level relationship
- The early 1983–84 affair (Rahu Dasha) was therefore either: (a) a passing affair not counting as a UL-event, or (b) not a genuine commitment
"UL is basically commitment — you want to share life together, you want to compromise for each other. A one or two-year relationship without that intent doesn't necessarily count as a marriage in the UL framework."
Saturn's Dual Role
Saturn is both 6th lord and 7th lord in Leo Lagna:
- As 6th lord in 6th: creates problems in the relationship
- As 7th lord: won't let it fully break either
"Saturn being the 7th lord also... is not basically letting it go. Things make reasonable sense."
Leo vs. Virgo Lagna — Rectification
| Evidence | Leo Lagna | Virgo Lagna |
|---|---|---|
| Personality | Authoritative, takes charge, practical | Scholarly, indecisive |
| Subject confirms | Yes | No |
| Strong 5th house | Yes (Dharma Karma Yoga) | Different |
| UL events correlating with Dasha | Better fit | Less coherent |
| Verdict | Probable correct Lagna | Rejected |
🌀 UL Theory — Second Relationship Rule
[!IMPORTANT] In the Upapada Lagna framework:
- First relationship / marriage = UL itself (Pisces here)
- Second relationship / marriage = 8th from UL (Libra = Venus here)
- Third = 8th from 8th from UL, etc.
This is different from the 7th from UL for second marriage sometimes mentioned by other teachers.
Dasha–UL Correlation
| Dasha | Period | Event |
|---|---|---|
| Rahu | 1983–84 | First "affair" — not a genuine UL event (Rahu not clearly UL lord) |
| Jupiter | 1994 | Second affair begins — Jupiter is UL lord (Pisces) = first UL-level relationship |
| Saturn | 2001–2021 | Problems in the relationship; partial breakup July 2005 |
| Saturn–Saturn | ~2005 | Relationship "downgraded" — Saturn 6th lord aspecting UL |
| Saturn–Mercury | Current | Litigation, intrigue, equity dispute (Mercury in 8th with Sun+Rahu in D10) |
📊 Dasha Analysis of the Case
Dasamsa (D10) — Career
| Feature | Detail | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn | Yogakaraka (9th+10th lord) in Lagna, friendly sign | Saturn Dasha = overall good for career |
| Saturn in Mandakarka Sthana | Slight weakness | |
| Mercury Antardasha in D10 | 8th house with Sun + Rahu | Workplace intrigue, backstabbing, A6+A8 in 4th = no mental peace |
| Sun Pratyantardasha | Sun in D10 with Mercury+Rahu; eclipsed by Rahu | Not favorable — no resolution till ~Nov 25 |
| Moon Pratyantardasha | After Nov 25 | More favorable for career; 3rd lord in 6th = Viparita Raja Yoga |
Navamsa — Relationship
| Feature | Detail | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury (7th lord in D9) | In 5th house | Other person maintaining emotional attachment; not letting go |
| Moon Pratyantardasha (after Nov 25) | 6th lord, 8th lord energy, aspected by Ketu | Can show break in relationship |
Bhoga (Result Lord) Analysis
From Saturn Dasha, Mercury Antardasha:
- Bhoga falls in UL → compromises must be made
- 3rd from there → bold initiative required
- Moon sub-period: Bhoga in UL again → compromise can take effect
"Mercury, Sun sub-period is actually relatively fine — Sun is 9th lord with Raja Yoga from Lagna. But Moon sub-period shows a potential break in the relationship. After November 25 — about one to two months of lingering trouble, then career smooths out and relationship likely breaks."
⚖️ Ethics of Recommending Separation
[!WARNING] An astrologer should never recommend separation or divorce except in the most extreme circumstances.
PVR's statement:
"Suggesting divorce to somebody or suggesting separation is a big karma. It's a bad idea for us as astrologers. We don't recommend that ever. Unless in really, really extreme cases."
What an astrologer CAN say:
- "The chances of this surviving are very low."
- Not: "You should end this relationship."
Rule for UL: Even if the couple is not formally married but the UL is activated (11+ year relationship here = clearly a UL), treat it as a marriage. Discouraging separation applies.
