Verse 16 — Planets in 12th from AL: Earnings and Expenses

[!NOTE] Planets in the 12th from AL have Argala (2nd house intervention) on the 11th house. So they first generate gains (11th), then ensure those gains are spent (12th). The path of earning is determined by whether the planet is a shubha (functional benefic) or papa (functional malefic) — counted from the AL itself, not from Lagna.

Specific Planets in 12th from AL — Detailed Results

[!TIP] Jupiter alone in the 12th may not make the person spend money — he is the karaka for wealth accumulation, not giving away. Only when provoked by another planet's aspect does Jupiter make the person spend. Hence Parasara specifies "aspected by other planets" specifically for Jupiter.

🔱 Rahu/Ketu in 7th from Arudha Lagna — Digestive Problems

Verse: Arudha saptame rāhur athavā saṁsthitaḥ śikhī / Kukṣī vyathā yuto bālaḥ śikhinā pīḍito athavā

If the 7th house from Arudha Lagna has either Rahu or Ketu, the person suffers from stomach/digestive problems.

Why Digestion?

The reasoning works through Arudha Lagna as body:

Karaka Logic — Why 5th from AL is Most Vulnerable

"Rahu and Ketu, if they want to damage the body, they prefer to damage the part whose karaka they hate. Sun is their enemy. The fifth house is Sun's domain. So digestive problems are the preferred target."

[!NOTE] This rule holds for either Rahu or Ketu — not necessarily both. Modifying factors: if Sun is strong, if the 5th lord is strong and friendly to Rahu-Ketu, if Jupiter occupies the 5th house from AL — these will reduce the digestive vulnerability. Rahu-Ketu's Dasha/Antardasha will trigger the result.

Chart type for this analysis: Primarily Rasi (physical matters). D2 (Hora) can also be used for physical body analysis.

🔬 Alternative Approach: Longitude-Based Arudha Padas

[!IMPORTANT] This is PVR's research proposal — not explicitly stated in Parasara's available texts. It is based on the argument that houses require a longitude reference point, and the sign-based method (counting Rashis) cannot give a degree for reckoning houses from any Arudha.

Problem with Sign-Based Arudha

With the standard sign-based method:

• AL is a sign, not a point (no longitude)
• Without a longitude, you cannot properly compute houses from AL using Parasara's own principle (houses are reckoned from Sputas/longitudes)
• Also: with the sign method, AL can only fall in 6 possible houses from Lagna (3,4,5,9,10,11) — all other houses are ruled out, which may be artificially restrictive

Formula — Longitude-Based Method

1. Start at BHAVA's cusp longitude (e.g., Lagna cusp at 1°20' Sagittarius)
2. Find BHAVA LORD's exact longitude (e.g., Jupiter at 0°10' Virgo)
3. Compute the longitude DIFFERENCE (Lagna → Jupiter = 10 signs − 1°10')
4. Add the same difference from Jupiter:
   Jupiter (0°10' Virgo) + (10 signs − 1°10') = 29° Taurus
5. Apply the exception (if result lands in 0°–30° from Bhava's cusp,
   or 180°–210° from Bhava's cusp → shift by 270° = take 10th)

Key difference from sign-based: AL is now a point (longitude), not a sign. This allows precise house reckoning from AL.

📊 Dhirubhai Ambani — Case Study

Sign-Based AL Analysis

[!WARNING] Paradox with standard approach: 12th from AL has more planetary influence (4 aspects) than 11th (2.5 aspects). This would predict more expenses than gains — inconsistent with Dhirubhai Ambani being one of India's richest self-made men.

Longitude-Based AL Analysis

• Lagna at 1°20' Sagittarius; Jupiter at 0°10' Virgo
• Distance = 10 signs − 1°10' (Jupiter is 1°10' before the exact 10th-sign point)
• Apply same from Jupiter: 0°10' Virgo + (10 signs − 1°10') ≈ 29° Taurus
• Arudha Lagna = 29° Taurus (not Pisces)

11th from AL (29° Taurus → 11th house cusp ~29° Pisces):

Total: ~6.5 out of 8 planets — average 80–85% aspect strength per planet.

"This fits perfectly with Parasara's criterion that if many (or all) planets aspect the 11th from AL, the person will be extremely wealthy."

Raja Pada (A10) location:

• Mercury (10th lord) at 21°43' Scorpio
• 10th house cusp at 1°20' Virgo
• Using longitude method: A10 falls at ~12° Aquarius → 9th house from AL (Bhagya sthana — excellent trine)
• Compare sign-based: A10 in 11th from AL (less specific benefit)

Dhana Pada (A2) location:

• Saturn (2nd lord) at 10°41' Capricorn
• A2 falls ~20° Libra → 5th house from AL (Poorva Punya — excellent trine)

[!TIP] Parasara's rule: Important Arudha Padas (Raja Pada, Dhana Pada) falling in Kendras or Konas from AL indicate that those areas of life (career, wealth) will flourish tremendously. Both A10 in 9th and A2 in 5th confirm extraordinary success in career and wealth.

💻 Bill Gates — Case Study

Sign-Based AL Analysis

• Standard AL in Virgo
• 11th from Virgo = Cancer; aspects: Rahu (full), Saturn (full), Moon (half), Venus/Sun (quarter each) ≈ 3 aspects
• Conclusion: Not very convincing for such a wealthy person

Longitude-Based AL Analysis

• Lagna at 26°22' Gemini; Mercury at 23°21' Virgo
• Distance = 3 signs − 3°01' (Mercury is 3°01' before exact 3rd house cusp from Lagna)
• From Mercury: 23°21' Virgo + (3 signs − 3°01') ≈ 20°20' Sagittarius
• Arudha Lagna = ~20°20' Sagittarius (not Virgo)
• Exception check: 20°20' Sagittarius is in the 6th house from Lagna — no exception

11th from AL (20°20' Sagittarius → 11th house = ~20°20' Libra):

• Venus (Moola Trikona) and Saturn (exalted) are occupants of the 11th
• Moon has three-quarter aspect; Jupiter has one-quarter aspect
• Total ≈ 3+ aspects, with Venus (lord of 11th from AL) and exalted Saturn directly in it — Parasara specifically says lord of sign in the house and exalted planets make it very powerful

[!NOTE] Both Venus and Saturn are close to the cusp of the 11th house (Venus at 26°, Saturn at 28°, cusp at 20°20'). This makes them even more powerful — fully within the house and near the cusp point.

Raja Pada (A10) location (longitude method): A10 ≈ 14° Sagittarius → 12th house from AL — not in a kendra or kona. This is an anomaly.

Bhaga Pada (A9) location: A9 ≈ beginning of Cancer → 7th house from AL (a Kendra) — well-placed.

[!WARNING] The Bill Gates example is partially satisfying with the longitude method — 11th house is strong (confirming wealth), but Raja Pada in 12th house doesn't fully confirm the expected pattern. PVR acknowledges this is still research in progress and not a definitive proof.

🧩 Research Humility & Knowledge Framework

PVR's Position on the Longitude Approach

"This is not based on Parashara's explicit teaching. It is a research exploration. You may have heard of a different version of Parashara where the longitude-based approach is mentioned — I have not personally seen it. Use whatever you are confident in."

Practical advice for practitioners:

• Use the approach you have confidence in when helping clients
• Experiment with the longitude approach on your own charts and famous charts
• If you find more consistency, gradually transition — this is not a reason to abandon what works

PVR on BPHS Authenticity

PVR strongly affirms BPHS as the authentic work of the Rishi Parasara:

"Whenever I actually took something in Parasara, went deep into it, understood it, and applied it — it just works. Consistently. I cannot say the same of material from other sources."

The signal-to-noise analogy:

"Whatever you are doing with sign-based Arudhas is not useless — there is signal. But it is signal corrupted with white noise. We are trying to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Not starting over."

📐 Arudha Padas in Divisional Charts

Two approaches for finding Arudhas in divisional charts:

Example (Dhirubhai Ambani):

• AL at 29° Taurus
• In Dasamsa: 29° Taurus = last Dasamsa of Taurus. For an even sign (Taurus), Dasamsa starts from Capricorn → 10th Dasamsa = Libra
• So Dasamsa AL falls in Libra — still in the same sign as the sign-based method for this chart

[!TIP] PVR's recommendation: experiment with the second approach (treating Arudhas as abstract bodies). Manual calculation is straightforward once you know the methodology.

🔀 Graha Arudha with Two Owned Signs — Further Clarification

When a planet owns two signs and you compute two possible Graha Arudhas:

• Parasara says use the stronger sign — one Graha Arudha per planet
• The weaker sign's Arudha may still have some minor influence
• PVR's take: one Arudha dominates; the other may show secondary manifestations but should not be the primary reference
• How to judge the stronger sign: Parashara gives guidance later in other contexts (planetary aspects, occupants, exalted planets in the sign, the planet's own Rashi Drishti on the sign)

[!NOTE] When Parasara says "count up to the stronger-owned sign" — he gave no explicit rules for judging strength in this specific context. We apply general principles from elsewhere in BPHS. This is one area where the teaching is not fully complete in the available text.
