🕉️ Class 87 — Planetary Avasthas & Upanayanam Muhurta

A deep dive into the nine Sayanadi Avasthas of Parasara — what each symbolic "activity state" means for a planet's output — followed by a live muhurta selection exercise for a boy's Upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony) using transit analysis, Dasha correlation, and Navamsa assessment. The class also includes a rich Vedantic digression on Maya, the uniformity of perception, and the Yoga Vasistham.

🔱 Opening Invocation & Chart of Class Start

The class began with the standard invocatory mantras. A key auspicious observation:

At the exact moment this class started (Ctrl-N in Jagannatha Hora software):

  • Rasi Lagna (Tula): Jupiter + Mercury in Lagna
  • Navamsa Lagna (Vrishabha): Jupiter + Venus in Lagna
Chart Lagna Planets in Lagna
Rasi Tula (Libra) Jupiter + Mercury
Navamsa Vrishabha (Taurus) Jupiter + Venus

Two benefics in Lagna in both Rasi and Navamsa, with Jupiter common and strong in both — a very auspicious start time for the class.

🌟 Avastha Traya — Three Foundational States

Parasara describes three parallel layers of avastha (state) for each planet:

flowchart TD
    AV["Avastha (State of a Planet)"]
    AV --> A["1. Age-based\n(Balaadi Avastha)\nHow capable?"]
    AV --> B["2. Alertness-based\n(Jagruta/Swapna/Nidra)\nHow aware?"]
    AV --> C["3. Mood-based\n(Shanta/Kopita/Dina...)\nWhat feeling?"]
    AV --> D["4. Sayanadi Avastha\n(Activity-based — MOST IMPORTANT)\nWhat is the planet doing?"]

[!IMPORTANT] Parasara himself says: Sayanadi Avasthas are the most important of all the avastha categories.

👶 Age-Based Avasthas (Balaadi)

Avastha Meaning Quality
Bala Infant — needs care & nourishment Weak but potentially eager
Kumara Adolescent Learning, growing
Yuva Young adult (strongest formula result) Most productive by standard formula
Vriddha Old — frail, less strong Weakened by formula
Mruta Dead / on deathbed Weakest by formula

Calculation: In odd signs — divide 30° into five 6° segments, starting Bala from 0°. In even signs — reverse the order (last 6° = Bala).

[!NOTE] The formula is not absolute. Vivekananda achieved greatness in his thirties; Adi Shankara mastered all Vedanta before age 20. A planet in Bala avastha is not necessarily unable to give results — context matters.

Planet-nature interaction (discussed below in depth): Mercury may actually thrive in Bala/Kumara avastha (the learner is strongest when young). Saturn may be stronger in Vriddha avastha (patience and discipline are old-man traits).

👁️ Alertness-Based Avasthas

These map directly to the Avastha Traya of Vedanta (Jagrut, Swapna, Sushupti):

Avastha Vedantic state Planet's output
Jagruta (awake) Waking — sees this-world reality Full results — most powerful
Swapna (dreaming) Dreaming — sees other reality Half results
Nidra (sleeping) Deep sleep — sees nothing No results; planet is inert

[!NOTE] We use planets to assess their influence on this dual world. Therefore, Jagruta (awake to this maya-world) is most powerful in this context, even though Sushupti is philosophically the closest to Brahman.

Nuance: Not all planets sleep the same. A Sattvic planet like Jupiter in Nidra may still have a "light sleeper" quality, while a Tamasic planet like Saturn may enter Kumbhakarna-deep sleep. Benefics in Nidra are less dangerous; malefics in Nidra may actually be a relief.

😤 Mood-Based Avasthas

Avastha Meaning Quality
Shanta Peaceful Good
Mudita Delighted Good
Dina Helpless/tired Unfavorable
Vikala Crippled Unfavorable
Kopita Angry Troublemaker
Dukhita Distressed/depressed Unfavorable
Khara Mischievous Creates trouble

[!TIP] Mood-based avasthas are more important than age-based or alertness-based avasthas in PVR's assessment — a happy planet gives results eagerly; a depressed planet drags results.

🌙 Sayanadi Avasthas — The Most Important

These describe what activity the planet is currently engaged in. All ten states are symbolic:

# Avastha Literal meaning Interpretation Quality
1 Sayana Lying down, relaxed Planet at ease, gives results naturally without struggle Good (passive)
2 Upavesana Sitting Half-active, half-passive Moderate
3 Netrapani Eyes + hands Alert, watching and doing things Active, not achieving
4 Prakasana Glowing, shining Planet radiates; results come effortlessly — planet just glows Very auspicious
5 Gamana Going In transition, moving Unfavorable — energy wasted
6 Agamana Coming back Returning from transition Unfavorable — energy in flux
7 Sabha / Sabha Vasati In an assembly Planet is on the podium; respected, stature visible Auspicious
8 Agama Traditional ritual context? Uncertain — possibly engaging in traditional work Uncertain
9 Bhojana Eating food Planet hungry, nourishing itself before delivering results Active but needs boost
10 Vrichalipsa Eager to dance Planet excited, wants to show off its results Very good
11 Kautuka Very eager Planet is extremely eager to deliver results Very auspicious
12 Nidra Sleeping Planet unresponsive, won't give results Inauspicious

[!IMPORTANT] Prakasana, Sabha, Vrichalipsa, and Kautuka are the most auspicious Sayanadi states. Nidra, Gamana, and Agamana are the least favorable.

Malefic in Sayana

If a villain lies down relaxed (Sayana) instead of fuming — be concerned. He has already arranged for things to happen. Whereas Vishnu in Sayana (Ananta Shayana) = feel relaxed.

The nature of the planet modifies the quality of any avastha:

  • Sabha is great for Sun, Jupiter, Mercury (scholars, wise ones) — they belong on a podium.
  • Sabha for Saturn = out of place; he belongs arranging things below the podium, not on it.

🔢 Results Delivery in Dasha Periods

When a planet's Dasha period is divided into four parts, each part delivers results in a specific order. The order differs by planet type:

flowchart LR
subgraph Natural_Benefics["Natural Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon)"]
B1["1st quarter: Results of the\nhouse occupied"]
        B2["2nd quarter: Results of\nYogas (conjunctions/aspects)"]
        B3["3rd quarter: Results of\nown house(s)"]
        B4["4th quarter: Avastha\n(own state — last priority)"]
    end
subgraph Natural_Malefics["Natural Malefics (Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu)"]
        M1["1st quarter: Avastha\n(own state — first priority)"]
        M2["2nd quarter: Results of\nown house(s)"]
        M3["3rd quarter: Results of\nYogas"]
        M4["4th quarter: Results of\nhouse occupied"]
    end

[!TIP] Benefics are "altruistic" — they care about where they are and who they are with first. Malefics are "self-occupied" — their own state (mood, capability) dominates first.

During the particular quarter when Sayanadi Avastha results are delivered, combine all three avastha types (age, alertness, mood) along with Sayanadi for a comprehensive picture.

🪐 Planetary Nature × Avastha Interaction

[!NOTE] This is an original insight from the discussion, not explicitly in Parasara:

Planet Nature Best Age Avastha (logical) Reasoning
Mercury The eternal learner Bala / Kumara Learners are strongest when young
Saturn Patience, hard work, old wisdom Vriddha Old age suits Saturn's natural disposition
Sun Authority, radiance Yuva Peak authority at peak age
Jupiter Wisdom, teaching Yuva / Vriddha Wisdom builds with age

Conclusion: The standard formula (Yuva = best for all) is a baseline. With knowledge of a planet's inherent nature, you can refine when that planet truly shines in its avastha.

🌀 Vedantic Digression — Maya and Uniformity

Question posed: If this world is maya, why is there uniformity of perception (everyone sees the same computer, same color)?

PVR's Answer — The Movie Analogy

flowchart TD
    Q["Why uniformity if Maya?"]
Q --> A["Movie screen analogy:\nEveryone watching sees the same scene.\nThe heroine wears red — all agree.\nBut is it real?"]
    A --> B["Uniformity ≠ Reality.\nMaya can create a shared projection\nwithout it being ultimately real."]
    B --> C["Shakespeare: 'All the world's a stage'\nWe escape to movies to forget life's problems,\nbut life itself is ALSO a movie — we just don't know it."]

"Just like a movie is not completely nonsense — at some level it is reality. If you go to a higher level, it's Maya. It is one level of the truth."

The Three States (Avastha Traya) — Vedantic dimension

State Sanskrit Experience
Waking Jagruta Sees "this" continuity — thinks it's real
Dreaming Swapna Sees different reality — false but continuous
Deep sleep Sushupti / Nidra Sees nothing — closest to void, to Brahman
Beyond Turiya Fourth state — beyond the three; the actual Reality

"The only reality of the world is Brahman. Everything else is perception. You cannot experience Brahman — when you are Brahman, you are the experiencer, the experience, and the experienced, all at once."

Yoga Vasistham Recommendation

Book: Vasishta's Yoga (original: Yoga Vasistham)

  • Author: Valmiki (recording Vasishta's teachings to Rama)
  • Translation: Swami Venkatesananda (student of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh)
  • Available as: "Vasishta's Yoga" by Swami Venkatesananda on Amazon
  • Subject: Pure Advaita — Who is God? What is man? What is duality?

"This translation is so brilliant that I wonder if some amsha of Vasishta himself entered [Venkatesananda] and completed this work."

PVR's position: "I am an Advaitin, but I accept this duality as partial reality, not complete. Whatever your dharma dictates, do that in this duality — but realize that ultimate reality is non-duality."

🔍 Miscellaneous Q&A

D30 and Mental/Physical Disability

Q: A girl born with mental disability — should we look at Rasi or D30?

Look at both Rasi and D30. Mental disability impacts physical life, so Rasi is relevant. D30 will show the specific weakness with tell-tale combinations.

Charting a Newborn Immediately

Q: Is there a convention against pulling a chart immediately at birth?

PVR's assessment: The convention likely exists for practical reasons (birth time uncertainty; better to observe some life events first for rectification). But many scriptures show rishis making charts at birth. If there are Balariksha combinations or longevity concerns, making the chart immediately is warranted (e.g., to recommend Ayush Homa on the 21st day). Rule is not from solid scriptural authority.

Moola Nakshatra — Moon vs. Lagna

Q: If Moon is in Moola Nakshatra, is the remedy required? What about Lagna in Moola?

The Amukta Moola doshas described by Parasara apply primarily to Moon (mind), not Lagna.

  • Moola is ruled by Nirriti (the demoness) — mind under demonic influence is the concern.
  • Lagna = seat of intelligence; less easily controlled by demonic forces than Moon.
  • Moon is more critical here than Lagna.

💍 Live Case — Upanayanam Muhurta for Mayank

Data: Mayank Wadekar — November 30, 1999, 11:13 PM, Lowell, Massachusetts Lagna & Rasi: Simha (Leo) — same sign (neither good nor bad in itself) Goal: Find a good muhurta for Upanayanam (sacred thread + Savitri Gayatri initiation), June–August 2007, in Pune, India

Core Principle of Upanayanam Muhurta

[!IMPORTANT] The goal is NOT for the function to go smoothly. The goal is the boy's spiritual progress. The most critical moment is the Brahma Upadesha — when the Savitri Gayatri Mantra is whispered into the boy's ear. That is the Muhurta. Everything else is procedure.

Savitri Gayatri is the foundational mantra that purifies the nadis of the Sukshma Sharira, enabling the person to receive any future mantra. It must be done at the right time.

Key Muhurta Factors

flowchart TD
    M["Upanayanam Muhurta Selection"]
M --> J["Jupiter: most important planet\n- Must NOT be retrograde\n- Transit link to Mantrapada (A5)"]
    M --> S["Sun: Dharma Karaka\n- Favorable transit required\n(Gayatri = highest form of Sun)"]
    M --> T["Tara Bala for the boy"]
    M --> TI["Tithi: auspicious\n(Jupiter's Tithi ideal)"]
    M --> NA["Nakshatra of Muhurta"]
M --> LA["Lagna: Jupiter in or aspecting\nNavamsa Lagna ideal for spiritual dharma"]

Transit Analysis — Why August 2007

Factor Finding
Jupiter Retrograde through late July; becomes direct ~Aug 6–7
Jupiter in Scorpio Transiting over Sun (lord of Mantrapada, A5 = Leo)
Sun + Jupiter link Jupiter over Mantrapada lord = link with A5
From Rasi Moon (Simha) Jupiter in 4th house (auspicious transit)
Vimshamsa Moon (Karka) Jupiter in 5th (Mantra Sthana from Vimshamsa Moon)
Vimshamsa A5 (Vrishabha) Jupiter aspecting it

Date selected: Sunday, August 26, 2007

Panchanga element Detail Assessment
Tithi Shukla Trayodashi Jupiter's Tithi — very auspicious
Vara Sunday (Bhanu Vara) Good for Gayatri/Savitri
Nakshatra Shravana Vishnu's Nakshatra; Sampat Tara for Mayank
Yoga Saubhagya Auspicious
Karana Tithila (owned by Mrigasi) Good
Jupiter Direct, Scorpio Strong; over Mantrapada lord Sun
Hora Kuja Hora at time of ceremony Mars = 9th lord (Yogakaraka); auspicious Hora

Lagna Selection

Options evaluated:

Navamsa Lagna Key planetary positions Assessment
Karka (Cancer) Sun + Mars in 12th (MKS for Sun) Unfavorable
Simha (Leo) Jupiter in 4th (driver of Dharma), Mercury exalted in 2nd, Mars+Sun in 11th Best
Vrischika (Scorpio) Jupiter in Lagna, but Mars+Sun in 8th Second option
Tula (Libra) Venus (Lagna lord) strong in 5th, Mercury exalted in 12th Third option
Kanya (Virgo) Jupiter in MKS Avoid

Final Muhurta: ~12:26–12:40 PM, August 26, 2007 (Simha Navamsa Lagna)

  • Start Brahma Upadesha at 12:28–12:29
  • Upadesha window: ~12:26 to 12:40 (Leo Navamsa active)
  • Rasi Lagna: Vrischika (Scorpio) — Jupiter in Lagna

[!TIP] As soon as the Leo Navamsa begins, start the teaching. It takes ~5–10 minutes to teach the mantra properly. The child should know the swaram (intonation) correctly by the end of the window.

Dasha Correlation

Level Dasha Antardasha Relevance
Saptamsha Dasha (applies — Lagna is Vargottama) Rahu = Ketu's results Mercury Rahu gives Ketu's results (no Ketu Dasha in Saptamsha); Ketu = lord of A5, Ketu in 9th house
Mercury Antardasha Exalted in Lagna In 5th from Rahu/Ketu (Dasha lord) Mercury = Mantra Sthana from Dasha lord
Bhaga of Mercury from Dasha lord In 5th from Lagna (Capricorn = Mantra Sthana) Double confirmation

"Rahu Dasha Mercury Antardasha is a very auspicious time to give a mantra. The results being given are actually Ketu's — lord of A5 in the 9th house of Dharma."

Critical Note on Muhurta Execution

[!WARNING] In Andhra Pradesh, some priests treat Jirakara bellam (cumin-jaggery) as the primary Muhurta moment, not Mangalasutra dhrana (for marriages) or Brahma Upadesha (for Upanayanam). This wastes the entire Muhurta.

Instruction to family: Regardless of what other procedures happen, ensure that Brahma Upadesha happens at the designated time window. Be firm with the priest.

📊 Annual Chart Analysis (D24)

Annual chart for the year containing the Upanayanam:

Feature Detail Interpretation
Hora lord Jupiter Ruler of the year
AL (Arooda Lagna) In 4th house with Jupiter (exalted) + Venus (exalted) Excellent learning image
A7 With AL Moving with smart, good peers
5th house Moon + Mars (Chandra Mangala Yoga) Recognized for good performance
5th lord Strong in 1st house Studies — good year
4th, 5th, 7th houses Very strong Learning, recognition, interactions all good

Weakness:

  • Sun (9th lord, teacher/guidance karaka) is with Rahu + Ketu in 6th house
  • Saturn already weakening the 9th house
  • Some trouble with a teacher or authority figure (harassing teacher, conflicts with school authorities)
  • 6th house very active in both Rasi and D24 → some fights/quarrels

A4 (Arooda of 4th house):

  • A4 in Lagna (Sagittarius) — learning/school is prominent
  • Argalas from 6th, 8th, and 12th lords on A4 — possibility of school change (family relocating)

"Study-wise he will do quite well. He'll be seen as a smart kid. But some authority or teacher may give trouble, especially in Sun and Rahu Dasha sub-periods. In November–December, be watchful at school."
