1. Administrative Announcements {#administrative-announcements}
SPFT Boston Jyotish Workshop
- Date: October 15–16 (Saturday–Sunday)
- Location: Clocktower Place, Maynard MA (Exit 27 off Rte 495; same building as Monster.com)
- Format: Two days (shortened from prior four-day format due to attendance patterns — most attendees came on weekends)
- Speakers:
- PVR Narasimha Rao — Original research on Pitra Veshya generalization — technique to find important years and outstanding events within a year
- Narayan — Deep dive on four elements of house analysis: house itself, house lord, house Arudha, and planet Arudha — why conflating these is "shooting in the darkness"
- Raghunath Rao Nemani — Kashyapa Hora Nadi principles for prashna (horary) without requiring a natal chart; student of Sri Ramdas Rao (Kashyapa Gotra), who learned from R. G. Rao (pen name Meena), famous South Indian Nadi astrologer who influenced Krishnamurti Paddhati
- Brendan Feeley — Trimsamsa (D30) and health: vulnerabilities, weaknesses, illness types, Ayurvedic and Jyotish connections
- Note: Sanjayji unable to attend — urgently leaving for India on Oct 9 due to court case
Washington DC Event
- October 1–2 (condensed from three days to two)
- PVR, Narayan, and Brendan attending; Sanjayji will not attend
SJC–Kalidas Sanskrit University BA Program
- Joint program by Sri Jagannath Center and Kalupur Kalidas Sanskrit University, Nagpur
- UGC-accredited (University Grants Commission, Government of India) distance education program
- Exams already held in Serbia (~30-40 students organized by Zoran Radovanovic), Singapore, India
- US exam center requires minimum 4 students
- Syllabus: Basics of Jyotish + some Sanskrit (first year)
- MA Program: Starting next year; normally requires BA, but one-time exception for qualified students via entrance test; those who have written a published book in Jyotish may apply directly
On Serbia: Sanjayji observed that Serbian language has words surprisingly close to Sanskrit — e.g., "first house" was translated as prathama [something], very close to the Sanskrit word for first.
SJC Boston Yahoo Group Posting Rules
- Physical attendees of the class can post
- Remote listeners (India, other countries) can subscribe and read but cannot post
- Contact Seshu to enable posting privileges for in-person students
2. Philosophical Continuation — Three Lingas Recap {#philosophical-continuation}
(Continuation from Class 53 discussion; Sriram asking follow-up questions)
What Is "Lagna"?
Lagna is not body alone, and is not mind — though mind closely associates with it. It is:
"Whatever mind thinks this is 'I,' that is lagna."
In ordinary people, this is the body + several associated things that form the sense of individual existence. As spiritual evolution increases, the mind may begin disassociating from the body, looking at it as a third person.
Three Lingas and Three Levels of Self-Identification
| Linga | Location (Yoga) | Astrological Equivalent | Level of "I" |
|---|---|---|---|
| Svayambhu Linga | Muladhara chakra | Lagna, Bhava Lagna | Normal ego — body + container of existence |
| Bana Linga | Anahata chakra (heart) | Atmakaraka (individual Jivatma) | Self-identification with individual soul, not body |
| Itara Linga | Ajna chakra | Vishwa Atma (Sun) — universal soul | Identification with universal Self; no separate "I" |
| Liberation | Sahasrara chakra | No linga to embrace | No self-identification at all; Shiva–Shakti unite |
Kundalini = the energy of ego/separate existence; by default embraces Svayambhu Linga at Muladhara. As it rises and embraces progressively higher lingas, self-identification shifts from body → individual soul → universal soul.
"Kundalini Shakti is nothing but the energy of your ego. It's the energy of your manifestation."
Important caveat: When PVR says Lagna = sense of "I," this is true for normal, unrealized people. For an evolved person, the sense of "I" has shifted to Atmakaraka or beyond. This does not contradict the astrological use of Lagna — in a normal horoscope, Lagna = the person's basic self-identification, including body but not limited to it.
3. Sudarshana Chakra Dasha — Clarifications and Refinements {#sudarshana-clarifications}
(Recap and new additions for students who missed Class 53)
How Dashas Are Computed
Year N → Nth house gives the dasha
After 12 years: cycle repeats (same three signs, different Pravesha Chakra)
Antardasha: Find dasha sign's lord → from that lord's position, go zodiacally
Each sign = one month in that year
Pratyantar dasha: From antardasha sign's lord's position → each sign = ~2.5 days
New Clarification: Sun as Benefic/Malefic in SCD
From Class 53 (review): Sun is malefic unless — exalted, Moola Trikona, own sign, or friendly sign.
New addition (Class 54): Sun is also to be treated as benefic when in the 1st house (from the dasha sign). Parasara's actual words can be interpreted this way, so add "1st house" to the list of conditions that make Sun a benefic.
"First house, I think I did not mention in the last class, so I'm mentioning a new point in the recapitulation lesson."
Benefic/Malefic Summary for SCD
| Planet | Benefic? | Malefic? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ♃ Jupiter | Always | — | |
| ♀ Venus | Always | — | |
| ☿ Mercury | When alone or with more benefics | When with more malefics | If equal, judge by who is stronger |
| ☽ Moon | Shukla Paksha | Krishna Paksha | See controversy below |
| ☀️ Sun | When exalted/MT/own/friendly sign OR in 1st house | Otherwise | |
| ♂ Mars | — | Always | |
| ♄ Saturn | — | Always | |
| 🐉 Rahu | — | Always | Additionally destroys any house he occupies |
| 🐲 Ketu | — | Always |
Moon Paksha Controversy
Three views among scholars:
| View | Benefic | Malefic |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (most books) | Shukla Paksha (Tithi 1–15, waxing) | Krishna Paksha (Tithi 1–15, waning) |
| Phase-based | More than half-full (even if waning) | Less than half-full (even if waxing) |
| Three-part (PVR's father, Sanjayji) | Ashtami to Ashtami (~quadrant system) | Transitional periods |
"Both the views are accepted by a significant percentage of Vedic astrologers. I think both views deserve to be tried."
PVR's guideline: Use Shukla/Krishna Paksha rule (most accepted in books) as default for SCD calculations.
Interpretation of "Others Are Bad" vs. Neutral
For benefics: Parasara's exact words: "Kendra, Konashtama, Subha" (quadrants, trines, 8th = good) + "six and twelve are bad."
Parasara did NOT explicitly say the remaining houses (2nd, 3rd, 7th, 10th, 11th) are bad for benefics. They could be neutral. There is interpretive leeway here.
PVR's working assumption in Class 53: take only kendra/kona/8th/11th as good for benefics, others as bad. But Class 54 refines this: strictly by Parasara, only 6th and 12th are bad; others are neutral.
Refining the Thumb Rules with Debility
From traditional usage of Arudha Lagna judgment (additional refinement):
- Malefic in 3rd/6th but debilitated → bad. Wants to destroy but cannot; effort without result; frustration
- Benefic in 3rd/6th but debilitated → good. Good outcome even without effort (acceptance rather than struggle)
"So debility shows a change of attitude later on… A debilitated malefic in the sixth house will show trying to destroy, having lot of effort to destroy, but not being able to do it despite effort."
Interpretation of Good Planets: Own-Sign Subtlety
A malefic planet in own sign or exaltation in an otherwise "bad" house (like 4th or 10th) may be treated as good by a slightly more lenient interpretation. PVR notes:
"Apart from the standard thumb rules, if you use your intuition, your judgment, Saturn is not that bad [in 4th in own sign]."
4. How to Use the Three Chakra References {#three-references}
Parasara mandated all three references — Lagna Chakra, Chandra Chakra, Surya Chakra — but did not explicitly explain how to differentiate them. PVR's synthesis:
| Reference | What It Shows | Question It Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna Chakra | Person's actions, how they influence the world | What is the person doing? How are they applying intelligence? |
| Chandra Chakra | Person's perceptions, feelings, how world seems to them | How does the person feel? Are they happy/unhappy with their situation? |
| Surya Chakra | World's actual reaction; soul-level events; long-term karma | How is the world cooperating with this soul's work? Public recognition, elections, collective support |
Why Sun = World Cooperation
Sun represents Vishwa Atma — the combined, cumulative soul of the entire universe. When many souls cooperate with one person's agenda (a politician winning an election, a CEO gaining board support), that shows in the Sun dasha sign analysis.
"If a politician wins an election and becomes prime minister because half a billion people thought he was good enough to lead them, so many souls are cooperating with that particular soul… that kind of events, political elections — I would advise to look at Sun rather than Moon and Lagna."
Practical Application
For career events (job, recognition, promotion): → All three
For health/physical events: → Lagna (body + actions)
For emotional state (happiness/depression): → Moon
For public support, elections, collective outcomes: → Sun
For "what big thing the person did": → Lagna (intelligence applied)
For "how world reacted to it": → Sun
5. Case Study — George W. Bush D10 Analysis {#george-w-bush}
Birth Data
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | George W. Bush (43rd US President) |
| Date | July 6, 1946 |
| Time | ~7:30 AM (controversy — see note) |
| Time Zone | 4 hours West of GMT (wartime — EDT) |
| Place | New Haven, Connecticut |
| Longitude | 72°W55'43" |
| Latitude | 41°N18'29" |
| Note | PVR and Sanjayji spent one full day rectifying this chart together; multiple saved versions exist |
Time zone controversy: JHora software showed 5 hours West by default. PVR corrected it to 4 hours West (wartime EDT). If someone recorded birth time using the wartime zone, the raw data is correct at 4 hours West.
Dasha Computation Formula (for 2004)
Born: 1946. Year 2004 → 2004 − 1946 = 58 years completed
59th year running → 59th house giving dasha
59 mod 12 = 59 − 48 = 11 → 11th house dasha running
From Lagna: 11th house = Taurus
From Moon: 11th house = Libra (Moon and Sun in same sign)
From Sun: 11th house = Libra
→ Dasha: Taurus (Lagna Chakra) / Libra (Chandra Chakra) / Libra (Surya Chakra)
Bush 2004 Election Year Analysis — Libra (from Sun) {#bush-2004-election}
(Year: July 6, 2004 → July 6, 2005; focus: public support = Surya Chakra = Libra as Lagna)
| Planet | Position from Libra | Benefic/Malefic | Placement Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| ☀️ Sun | 3rd house | Benefic (in Jupiter's sign = friendly) | Neutral/borderline — 3rd for benefic, Parasara unclear |
| ♃ Jupiter | 5th house | Benefic | Excellent (kona) |
| ♄ Saturn | 4th house (own sign) | Malefic | Technically bad (kendra) — but own sign adds strength |
| ♂ Mars | 10th house (debilitated) | Malefic | Terrible |
| 🐉 Rahu | 11th house | Malefic | Good placement (11th for malefic) but also destroys 11th |
| 🐲 Ketu | 5th house | Malefic | Badly placed |
| ☽ Moon | 9th house (Krishna Paksha) | Malefic | Badly placed |
| ☿ Mercury | 9th house | Benefic (with Venus = stronger benefic) | Brilliantly placed (kona) |
| ♀ Venus | 9th house (own sign) | Benefic | Brilliantly placed (kona, own sign) |
Thumb rule count: 4 good (Jupiter, Rahu, Mercury, Venus), 5 bad → More bad than good
Why Bush still won — Yoga analysis:
graph TD
A[9th lord Mercury] --> D[Venus + Mercury + Moon in 9th house = 9th/10th/1st lord conjunction]
B[10th lord Moon] --> D
C[1st lord Venus] --> D
D --> E[Triple Raja Yoga in 9th house of Fortune]
E --> F[Lakshmi Yoga: 1st + 9th lords conjoined]
E --> G[Sarala Yoga + Vimala Yoga potential]
H[6th lord Saturn in own sign 4th house] --> I[Shasha Mahapurusha Yoga]
I --> J[Strong sixth house shows victory over enemies]
K[Jupiter in 5th with Saturn link to 3rd-6th] --> L[Enemy-destroying intelligence combination]
"When ninth house is brilliant, that means you have great protection… When you have excellent raja yogas involving bhagya and the tenth house, will the person's career suffer a big blow? It's not likely."
Decisive factor: 9th lord, 10th lord, and 1st lord (all benefics) conjoined in the 9th house = Lakshmi Yoga — one of the most powerful career/fortune yogas. This overwhelms any negative thumb-rule count.
"The combination in Kerry's chart would matter. The chart of US would matter. But you should be able to read from Bush's chart [who would win]."
Bush 2002-03 Iraq War Year — Pisces (from Lagna) {#bush-2003-iraq}
(Year: July 6, 2002 → July 6, 2003; Iraq war declared March 2003; focus: Lagna Chakra = Pisces = person's actions)
Key dasha sign: Pisces (from Lagna Chakra and Surya Chakra in this cycle)
| Yoga | Planets | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Gaja Kesari Yoga | Jupiter + Moon in Lagna (Pisces) | Will be remembered for long time for what was done |
| Chandra Mangala Yoga | Moon + Mars in Lagna | Action + aggression |
| Guru Mangala Yoga | Jupiter + Mars in Lagna | Power, boldness |
| Raja Yogas | 1st lord + 6th lord + 9th lord + 10th lord conjoined | Major action in world |
| Mars in Lagna | Krishna Paksha Moon + Mars (both malefics) | Intelligence dominated by malefics |
Why the action was aggressive/unwise (in PVR's neutral assessment):
Jupiter is in Pisces (own sign) = very Sattvic, relaxed. When Mars and Moon (two malefics) are in Lagna alongside Jupiter, they dominate over Jupiter. Jupiter in own sign is relaxed and "doesn't take his job seriously" — unlike Jupiter in Moola Trikona who would resist Mars firmly.
"So Mars and Moon, the two malefics, the Chandra Mangala Yoga will dominate over Jupiter's benefits. Looking at the chart, it looks like during the year, the person will do something really big, which is very aggressive, which is kind of unwise, but he will be remembered for a long time for that."
Bush 2005-06 — Scorpio Dasha (from Sun) {#bush-2005-scorpio}
(Year: July 6, 2005 → July 6, 2006; analyzing public support = Surya Chakra = Scorpio)
| Planet | Position from Scorpio | B/M | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| ☀️ Sun | Lagna | Malefic (in Scorpio, enemy sign) | Terrible — Rahu eclipses Sun in Lagna |
| 🐉 Rahu | Lagna (with Sun) | Malefic | Sun–Rahu in Lagna = destroying public image |
| 🐲 Ketu | 7th house (with Moon) | Malefic | Moon–Ketu = nodal affliction of mind/perception |
| ☽ Moon (Shukla Paksha) | 7th house | Benefic | Badly placed (6th/12th = bad for benefic) |
| ♃ Jupiter | 12th house | Benefic | Badly placed (12th = bad for benefic) |
| ♂ Mars | 8th house | Malefic | Terrible — 8th for malefic = sudden death/fall |
| 🐉 Rahu in Lagna | — | — | Destroys lagna/public persona |
| ♄ Saturn | 6th house (debilitated) | Malefic | Debilitated malefic in 6th = wants to destroy opposition but cannot |
| ♀ Venus | 10th house | Benefic | Good |
| ☿ Mercury | 10th house | Benefic | Good |
Critical combinations:
- 🔴 Sun + Rahu in Lagna → Public image being destroyed from within
- 🔴 Mars in 8th → Sudden catastrophic fall/death-like event in public standing
- 🔴 Rahu in 9th (fortune) → Fortune being destroyed; luck runs out; karma catches up suddenly
- 🔴 Ninth lord Moon eclipsed by Ketu → Both 9th house (via Rahu) and 9th lord (via Ketu) under nodal affliction
"Both the luminaries are coming under nodal affliction. That's not good. And how is Moon placed? Eighth lord in the seventh shows death. So it again shows death in popularity."
"Bush has a slice of luck. He's a very lucky person. When things are down, something happens to him which will reverse the situation. But this year, from the point of view of public support, he will not have any slice of luck. Anything that suddenly happens will only be for bad."
Historical context: 2005-06 was indeed when Bush's approval ratings collapsed (Hurricane Katrina August 2005, Iraq war deterioration, ~35-38% approval ratings by early 2006).
Bush 2006-07 — Sagittarius Dasha {#bush-2006-sagittarius}
(Year: July 6, 2006 → July 6, 2007)
| Factor | Placement | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Hamsa Mahapurusha Yoga | Jupiter in 4th (own sign) | Some comfort/security |
| Gaja Kesari Yoga | Jupiter + Moon in proximity | Some positive residue |
| Sun + Rahu in Lagna | Still in Lagna axis | Still terrible for public image |
| Moon (8th lord) in 7th | With Rahu-Ketu axis | Death-like suffering in public view |
| Venus in 9th | Benefic in kona | Some good |
Verdict: Still bad for public support. Some relaxation — he will be less anxious about ratings (Hamsa Yoga gives inner comfort), but will not regain public standing.
"Maybe he will resign to some extent. He will not worry that much… Even the next year it seems bad from the point of view of public support."
6. Case Study — John Kerry D10 Analysis {#john-kerry}
Birth Data
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | John Kerry (2004 Democratic Presidential Candidate) |
| Date | December 11, 1943 |
| Time | 8:08 AM (possibly 8:08:31 AM per class notes) |
| Time Zone | 6 hours West of GMT |
| Place | Aurora, Colorado, USA |
| Longitude | 104°W59'03" |
| Latitude | 39°N44'21" |
| Note | Multiple conflicting charts exist; PVR and Sanjayji spent a full day rectifying; this is their combined rectification |
Kerry 2004 Election Year Analysis — Pisces (from Sun) {#kerry-2004}
(Born Dec 1943; at time of election in Nov 2004, he was still in the year that started Dec 2003)
Born: 1943 (December). Year starting Dec 2003 → 60 years completed → 61st year running
61st house → 61 mod 12 = 1 → 1st house dasha
Sun is in Pisces → Surya Chakra Dasha = Pisces
| Planet | Position from Pisces | B/M | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| ☀️ Sun | 1st house (friendly) | Benefic | Good (1st for benefic) |
| ☽ Moon | 1st house (Krishna Titiya) | Malefic | Bad (Amavasya Yoga with Sun) |
| ♃ Jupiter | 2nd house | Benefic | Neutral (2nd = neither kona/kendra nor 6/12) |
| ☿ Mercury | 3rd house (alone) | Benefic | Bad (3rd for benefic) |
| 🐲 Ketu | 4th house | Malefic | Bad (4th for malefic) |
| ♀ Venus | 6th house | Benefic | Terrible (6th = Maraka Arka Sthana for benefic) |
| ♄ Saturn | 9th house | Malefic | Terrible (9th for malefic — protecting fortune????) No — malefic badly placed |
| ♂ Mars | 10th house | Malefic | Terrible (10th for malefic) |
| 🐉 Rahu | 10th house (with Mars) | Malefic | Terrible — Kuja Rahu Yoga destroys 10th house |
Count: ~1 good (Sun), 1 neutral (Jupiter), 7 bad → Catastrophic
Yoga analysis:
| Yoga | Planets | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Amavasya Yoga | Sun + Moon in Lagna | Weakens Lagna; bad for career/material |
| Kuja Rahu Yoga | Mars + Rahu in 10th | Destroys career/public standing |
| Dhimanta Yoga | 5th lord + 6th lord in Lagna | Intelligence + overcoming obstacles (partially) |
| Benefics in 3rd/6th | Mercury + Venus | Loss combination — no fighting spirit |
| Mars-Jupiter Parivartana | Mars (in 10th acts as Jupiter) | Partial mitigation — Hamsa Yoga in 10th |
| Ninth lord affliction | Moon eclipsed, Mars in 10th as Rahu's ally | Fortune completely destroyed |
Decisive quote:
"Ninth house and ninth lord are coming under nodal affliction. Karma is catching up with you. You didn't expect it, you didn't see it coming. So that kind of things are possible."
"There is absolutely no comparison. If you use just this technique to see whose career will have a big blow and whose career will have a big boost… there is absolutely no comparison."
Margin: Bush won by ~3% popular vote margin; Kerry never ran again for president — PVR notes "He came to public eye. He will never again get his chance. He's done."
7. Key Methodological Insights {#key-insights}
💡 Thumb Rules vs. Raja Yogas
Thumb rule counting (good/bad planets) → starting point
Raja Yoga analysis → dominant factor
If there is a strong Raja Yoga (9th lord + 10th lord + 1st lord together),
discount the thumb rule count entirely.
"Parasara gave thumb rules and then also said look at yogas.
Those thumb rules were just a starting point."
💡 Rahu in Any House — Special Rule
Rahu destroys whatever house he occupies — this is in addition to any placement judgment.
- Rahu in 11th = good for thumb rule count (11th for malefic) but also destroys 11th house matters
- Rahu in 9th = doubly terrible: bad placement for malefic AND destroys 9th house fortune
- Rahu with Sun, Moon, Jupiter, or Mars = "terrible yoga" — any of these four with Rahu = destruction
💡 Luminaries Under Nodal Affliction
When both Sun and Moon come under Rahu-Ketu affliction in the same dasha sign chart:
- Shows sudden, unexpected fall (karma catching up)
- No "slice of luck" available
- Death-like suffering in the house/signification being analyzed
- If it's the Dashamsa: career death or severe public collapse
💡 Jupiter in Own Sign — Does Not Resist Malefics
A surprising finding:
"When Jupiter is in own sign, he feels relaxed. He doesn't feel any obligation. He just wants to enjoy and relax. So Mars and Moon will dominate over him."
Contrast: Jupiter in Moola Trikona = Jupiter "takes his job seriously" and will resist malefic pressure.
Practical rule: Jupiter in own sign + malefics in the same house → malefics dominate. Jupiter in Moola Trikona + malefics → more balance.
💡 Seventh + Eighth Lord Conjunction
"Whenever seventh and eighth lords are together, that shows death or death-like suffering. Seventh lord's agenda is to kill. Eighth lord's agenda is to give longevity."
This conjunction = death-like events for whatever house it occurs in. Not a Viparita Raja Yoga unless:
- Both are in a dusthana (6/8/12)
- Lagna lord is not involved
💡 Why More Bad Planets Can Still Show Victory
PVR's key principle: Astrological judgment is relative, not absolute.
"Sometimes, even if you are competing for a big post like President of USA, even four out of nine may be a good score — if your opponent has only one out of nine."
Two charts must be compared:
- The winner's chart → strong dasha
- The loser's chart → weak dasha
- Charts of their spouses, vice presidents, country chart, new year chart → all factor in
8. Next Class Preview — Ashtavarga {#next-class}
"We will do Ashtavarga in the next class. What Parashara said is when you use the Sudarshana Chakra Dasha and look at planetary positions from the dasha sign, you can get further insight by combining Ashtavarga with it."

- How to use Ashtavarga in the Dasha Pravesha Chakra
- How to use Ashtavarga in the Antardasha Pravesha Chakra
- Examples applying both Sudarshana Chakra Dasha and Ashtavarga together
