🕉️ Opening — Nakshatra Sukta: Punarvasu & Pushya {#nakshatra-sukta}

Class 64 opens with the standard invocation sequence and reads mantras for the next two nakshatras in the Nakshatra Sukta cycle.

Distinction between Nakshatra Sukta mantras and other mantras:

• If propitiating Jupiter as 5th lord for children → use a general Brihaspati mantra.
• If strengthening Pushya as your karma nakshatra (because Saturn is transiting it) → use the Pushya Nakshatra Sukta mantra (Brihaspati as ruler of Pushya, not generic).

Practical use:

"If you want to maximize the good impact of a good planet on a star, or minimize the bad impact of a bad planet on a star, you can pray to that star directly using these mantras."

⚖️ Functional Benefic vs Malefic — Parashara's Rules {#functional-benefic}

[!IMPORTANT] Every planet has both a natural nature (inherent good/bad) and a functional nature determined by which houses it owns from the Lagna.

House Classification (Parashara)

[!NOTE] Lagna (1st house) = treated as a trine for this purpose — most benefic for any planet.

Balancing Dual Ownership

When a planet owns two houses of different quality:

• Good + Good = Strongly benefic
• Good + Bad = Neutral (with good slightly outweighing bad)
• Good + Neutral = Half-benefic
• Bad + Neutral = Half-malefic
• Bad + Bad = Strongly malefic

"Venus for Taurus Lagna owns 1st (trine — very good) and 6th (malefic). They seem to cancel. But Lagna lord's primary duty is protecting existence — so Venus is still benefic overall. He gives some sixth-house results too (fighting), but he's benefic."

Parashara resolves the balancing for every Lagna explicitly — he first gives the thumb rules, then lists for each Lagna which planets are good, bad, neutral, terribly malefic, or yogakaraka.

Yoga Karaka

Yoga Karaka = a planet owning BOTH a trine (1/5/9) AND a quadrant (4/7/10) simultaneously.

• That planet becomes the greatest benefic for that Lagna.
• Examples: Saturn for Libra and Taurus Lagnas (owns 4+5 and 9+10 respectively).

🐍 Natural vs Functional Benefic — Mercury's Chameleon Nature {#mercury-natural}

"When Mercury is with bad people, he is bad. With good people, he is good. With saints, he discusses Vedanta. With mafia people, he advises on the best plan for the crime."

Parashara's criteria for Mercury and Moon:

When many planets are present:

• Count benefics vs malefics Mercury is with.
• If equal: use proximity (closest planet dominates).
• If unequal: majority wins regardless of distance.

Example (Israel 2005 chart): Mercury with Moon (Amavasya — malefic), Sun (malefic), Rahu (malefic), Venus (benefic). Three malefics, one benefic → Mercury is clearly a malefic in that chart.

• Take 10th house as Lagna → assess dasha planet from it → quality of period for ruling party
• Take 3rd house as Lagna → assess same dasha planet from it → quality for opposition

🇮🇱 Israel Lunar New Year Chart (2005) — Ariel Sharon {#israel-2005}

Chart: 8 Apr 2005, 10:30:37 PM, Tel Aviv (34°46'E, 32°04'N), UTC+2

On Ariel Sharon's survival:

• Saturn = 3rd + 4th lord (not a malefic here in critical sense for Sharon)
• From L10 (Arudha of 10th lord = tangible leadership): Saturn is Lagna lord in 6th house
• Lagna lord in 6th = fights and overcomes obstacles; agenda is self-preservation
• Conclusion: Sharon will suffer greatly but will survive. Change of guard likely (Saturn in 8th aspecting 10th = instability in administration), but Sharon personally expected to fight back.

"Saturn is lagna lord in the sixth house. Lagna lord will help the person overcome the problem."

🗳️ Israel Lunar New Year Chart (2006) — Elections & Instability {#israel-2006}

Election period (Mars Dasha):

• From 10th house as Lagna: Mars = Lagna lord in 2nd house → okay, beneficial for ruling party
• From 3rd house as Lagna: Mars = 8th lord in 9th house → ruins fortune of opposition
• Conclusion: Ruling party wins election.

Conclusion: 2007 shows a decent chance of hostility involving Israel/Middle East.

💣 Iraq Lunar New Year — Gandanta Lagna {#iraq}

[!WARNING] Gandanta in a country's annual chart = terrible suffering for the country that year. The affliction falls on the entire population.

2006: Similar to Israel — not strong for war.

• A6: in 8th house (Libra), with Mandi (Mandi = Gulika = son of Saturn = inauspicious)
• 6th house: has Ketu
• Mars: exalted, aspecting 6th house (Dasha Drishti + Bria Drishti); A6 lord Venus in Martian house, aspected by Mars
• Conclusion: Good chance of hostility emanating from Iran in 2007.

💰 Financial New Year Chart (Kartika SP) — Stock Market {#financial-chart}

Chart: 1 Nov 2005, 8:25:14 PM EST, Washington DC

The Kartika Shukla Pratipada chart = financial new year. Cast when Saturn and Moon are conjoined in Libra (sign of market) on Kartik Amavasya = the day after Deepavali. Marwadi New Year.

Overall assessment (2005–2006 financial year):

• Most planets reasonably placed
• Good year for investing (last September/October was good entry point)
• Exception: Ketu period (April–May) → potential fall
• Next financial year (2006–2007): significantly worse

Key principle:

• Sun, Moon, Jupiter influencing the current Tribhagi nakshatra = generally good for markets
• Latta (kick) from any planet = single most important negative signal
• When assessing any influencing transit planet: always return to NATAL chart of financial year to determine if that planet is benefic or malefic for that chart

Example (Jan 8, 2006):

• Current dasha: Purva Ashadha
• Transit influencing Purva Ashadha: Sun (3rd lord, debilitated = excellent, Raja yoga potential), Rahu (9th lord = protector, benefic), Ketu (6th lord = some problems)
• Two benefics, one malefic → moderately good period
• No lattas on Purva Ashadha at that time
• Conclusion: That period is good for markets

Extension to corporations:

"When you are looking at corporations, along with Moon, look at Lagna provided Lagna is stronger. In some companies Moon is stronger; in others, Lagna is stronger."

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Father = 9th House — Classic Sources {#father-9th}

Question raised: Some practitioners use 10th house for father (logic: 10th = 7th from 4th = husband of mother).

Instructor's response:

"Our classics are very clear. All the classics — Sarasara, Varahmihira, everybody — talked about ninth house as the Pitriskana. There is absolutely no ambiguity."

[!WARNING] Do not adopt 10th house for father in classical Jyotish. The logic (7th from 4th) can generate infinite alternative interpretations (e.g., "mother is wife of father, so father is 9th from 3rd..."). Stick with classical texts.

📚 Pranapada Lagna — Homework Assignment {#pranapada-homework}

Assignment: Read BPHS (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra) — look at the chapter on Pranapada Lagna.

• Read results given for Pranapada Lagna in all twelve houses
• Identify the common theme across those results
• Deduce what Pranapada Lagna actually shows (energy? attitude? luck? vitality?)
• Report findings in next class

Instructor's hint:

"Just as Hora Lagna shows wealth-related matters and Ghati Lagna shows power-related matters, look at the results and deduce what Pranapada Lagna means. Parashara never explicitly says 'use Pranapada to see X' — you have to deduce from the results."

Related note: Tribhagi Dasha with Pranapada Lagna can be tested on corporate charts (Microsoft, IBM inception charts mentioned as examples by a student).

Pushya Nakshatra Mantra (for Brihaspati)

"Om Brihaspati Prathamam Yajamana. Pushyam Nakshatram Abhitam Babhuvaha. Shreshto Devanaam Proutana Sudishnu. Dishonu Sarva Abhayanno Astu. Pushya Purastaat Utamajato Na. Brihaspati Nah Paripaatu Paschaat. Badhetaam Shreshto Abhayam Krinuvaam. Suviryasya Patayasyaama."

Deity: Brihaspati (Jupiter) — as ruler of Pushya nakshatra. Most auspicious star. Saturn is currently (class time) transiting Pushya — read this mantra to protect career/mental application (karma nakshatra) from Saturn's pressure.
