🌟 Why Narayana Dasha is Different {#why-narayana}

The King of All Dashas

In PVR's parampara, Narayana Dasha is considered the most important of all dashas — the king.

It is a generalization and elaboration of Chara Dasha (popularized by Jaimini interpreters). Narayana Dasha is more powerful and generic than Chara Dasha.

The Occasion

Sun just moved from Sagittarius to Capricorn (Makar Sankranti / Pongal), beginning Uttarayan. PVR considers this an auspicious time to introduce this new and important dasha.

🔮 Nakshatra Dashas vs Rashi Dashas {#philosophical-diff}

Nakshatra Dashas (Vimshottari, etc.)

  • Based on Moon's nakshatra
  • Moon = mind, perception, feeling
  • Nakshatras are owned by Moon (Moon rules the 27-nakshatra division of the zodiac)
  • Shows: how you feel, how you perceive what happens — mental and emotional experience

"Somebody may be a very successful lawyer, but very unhappy. Vimshottari will show the unhappiness, not the success."

Rashi Dashas (Narayana Dasha)

  • Based on signs of the zodiac
  • Sun = truth, reality
  • Signs (12 Rashi divisions) are owned by Sun — Sun has 12 forms called Dwadasha Adityas
  • Shows: what is actually happening on the ground — objective reality, not perception

"This is the ground reality. It doesn't care what you think. It doesn't care what people think. It tells you the ultimate truth at a given point of time."

Lagna as Brahma / 7th as Shiva

Narayana is Nirguna (without qualities) — he can be in Brahma or Shiva.

  • Lagna = abode of Brahma within you (continuous creation of new cells, new existence)
  • 7th house = abode of Shiva (desires, marriage, destruction, cell death)
  • Narayana is with the stronger of Brahma (Lagna) or Shiva (7th house)
  • Narayana Dasha starts from the stronger of Lagna or 7th house

📐 Starting Sign — Lagna vs 7th House Strength {#starting-sign}

Rule

Find the stronger of: Lagna and 7th house. Start Narayana Dasha from whichever wins.

Rules for Comparing Two Signs {#sign-strength}

Apply rules in sequence until tie is broken:

Rule 1: Count planets in each sign (include Rahu and Ketu). Sign with more planets wins.

Rule 2 (if tied): Among these three — Mercury, Jupiter, and the sign's lord — which sign has more of them occupying or aspecting it (by Rashi Drishti)?

  • If a sign's own lord happens to be Mercury or Jupiter: count twice if it occupies/aspects
  • Sign with higher count wins

Rule 3 (if tied): Which sign has an exalted planet in it? That sign wins.

Rule 4 (if tied): Oddity of sign and its lord's sign — if sign is odd and lord is in even sign (or vice versa), they are differentstronger (male + female energy = complete). If both same (odd-odd or even-even) → weaker.

Rule 5 (if tied): Which sign's lord is at more advanced degrees within his sign? That sign wins.

Example from Class (Gemini vs Sagittarius)

Test Gemini Sagittarius Winner
Planet count 0 0 Tie
Mercury/Jupiter/lord aspect 0 0 Tie
Exaltation None None Tie
Oddity (lord's sign) Odd + Odd Odd + Odd Tie
Lord's degrees Mercury: 3°07′ Jupiter: 9°45′ Sagittarius wins

🌀 Three Types of Dasha Progression {#progressions}

The progression through the 12 signs follows one of three patterns based on the nature of the starting sign:

Sign Type Ruler Progression
Movable (Chara Rashi) Brahma Brahma's order: natural sequence (Aries→Taurus→Gemini...)
Fixed (Sthira Rashi) Shiva Shiva's order: every 6th sign (Leo→Capricorn→Gemini→Scorpio...)
Dual (Dwi-Swabhava Rashi) Vishnu Vishnu's order: Dharma Trikona then shift by 1

Brahma's Progression (Movable Signs)

Regular forward sequence: sign 1, 2, 3... covers all 12 signs naturally.

Shiva's Progression (Fixed Signs)

Start from sign, go to 6th from it, then 6th from that... This "troubles" the chart — each step jumps to the 6th (enemy/difficulty house).

Example starting from Leo: Leo → Capricorn → Gemini → Scorpio → Aries → Virgo → Aquarius → Cancer → Sagittarius → Taurus → Libra → Pisces

All 12 signs covered, none repeated.

Vishnu's Progression (Dual/Mutable Signs)

Follow Trikona groups, then shift by 1 sign:

Group Signs
Dharma Trikona Start, 5th, 9th from start
Artha Trikona Start+1, 5th from that, 9th from that
Kama Trikona Start+2, 5th, 9th
Moksha Trikona Start+3, 5th, 9th

Example starting from Pisces (dual sign): Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

All 12 covered in 4 groups of 3 (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha Trikonas).

⬆️⬇️ Forward vs Backward: Odd-Footed Signs {#odd-even-footed}

Odd-Footed vs Even-Footed Signs

Not odd/even in the traditional sense — instead, grouped in threes:

Foot Signs
Odd-footed Aries, Taurus, Gemini AND Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius
Even-footed Cancer, Leo, Virgo AND Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces

This mirrors the three padas (feet) of Vishnu — He takes three steps to cross creation. First three signs = first step (odd), next three = second step (even), etc.

The Rule

Take the 9th sign from the starting dasha sign. If it is odd-footed → count forward (zodiacal). If it is even-footed → count backward (anti-zodiacal).

Example (PVR's Chart — starting from Pisces)

  • 9th from Pisces = Scorpio
  • Scorpio is in the "Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius" group → odd-footed
  • Therefore: count forward
  • Sequence: Pisces → Cancer → Scorpio → Aries → Leo → Sagittarius → Taurus → Virgo → Capricorn → Gemini → Libra → Aquarius ✓

📏 Dasha Length Computation {#dasha-length}

The Rule

Count signs from the dasha sign to its lord (not including the starting sign — start counting from the next sign). Use forward or backward counting based on whether the dasha sign itself is odd-footed or even-footed.

Formula: Distance (not including starting sign) = Dasha length in years.

Equivalent: Count from dasha sign's next sign to the lord's sign, inclusive.

Exceptions

Condition Adjustment
Lord in own sign 12 years (regardless of distance)
Lord exalted Add 1 year to the normal count
Lord debilitated Subtract 1 year from the normal count

[!NOTE] If the lord is in own sign AND exalted (like Mercury in Virgo), the own-sign rule takes precedence: 12 years. The exaltation addition does not additionally apply in this case.

But if you're computing another sign's dasha where the exalted planet is the lord, the exaltation rule applies normally.

Example: Pisces Dasha

  • Pisces is even-footed → count backward
  • From Pisces, count backward to Jupiter (in Libra): Aquarius (1), Capricorn (2), Sagittarius (3), Scorpio (4), Libra (5)
  • 5 years → Pisces Dasha = 5 years

📊 Sample Computation: PVR's Chart {#sample-computation}

Chart Data: April 4, 1970, 5:47:13 AM IST, Machilipatnam (Masulipatam), India, 81°E08′, 16°N10′

Starting Sign Determination

  • Lagna = Virgo (0 planets)
  • 7th house = Pisces (Sun in Pisces = 1 planet)
  • Pisces wins → Narayana Dasha starts from Pisces

Pisces is a Dual (Vishnu) Sign

  • Use Vishnu's progression
  • 9th from Pisces = Scorpio (odd-footed) → forward
  • Sequence: Pisces → Cancer → Scorpio (Dharma Trikona group 1) → Aries → Leo → Sagittarius (Artha Trikona group) → Taurus → Virgo → Capricorn (Kama Trikona group) → Gemini → Libra → Aquarius (Moksha Trikona group)

Dasha Lengths

Dasha Sign Lord Position Length
Pisces Jupiter Libra 5 years
Cancer Moon (counted in class)
Scorpio Mars
Aries Mars
Sagittarius Jupiter Libra
Leo Sun
... ... ... ...
