🌌 1. Astronomical Digression — Why Lagna Duration Varies {#astronomical}
[!NOTE] This tangent arose from a student's observation that Scorpio lagna lasts 2h 26m, Capricorn only 1h 29m, Aquarius 1h 10m.
Root cause: Earth's axial tilt.
- If Earth's rotation axis were perpendicular to the Sun-Earth plane, all signs would rise in equal time (~2 hours).
- Because Earth is tilted, the rising tangent sweeps the zodiac at unequal speeds — faster when the rotational axis faces toward the zodiac plane, slower when perpendicular to it.
- In Boston, winter days can be 8 hours and nights 16 hours — so lagna covers 180° of zodiac in only 8 hours (fast) vs. 16 hours (slow). This non-uniformity is what creates unequal lagna durations.
[!TIP] The exact definition of lagna involves projecting the intersection of the Earth's local horizon with the ecliptic plane — a non-trivial 3D geometry problem because the Moon (and other planets) have their own orbital plane slightly tilted from the ecliptic.
🌌 2. Three-Parts Rule — Recap & Application {#three-parts-recap}
This rule applies to Narayana Dasha Mahadashas (and technically Antardashas too):
flowchart TD
A[Divide Mahadasha into 3 equal parts] --> B{Is the SIGN Shishodaya?}
B -->|Yes| C[Sign takes FIRST 1/3]
B -->|No - Prishtodaya| D[Sign takes LAST 1/3]
B -->|No - Ubhayodaya/Pisces| E[Sign takes MIDDLE 1/3]
C & D & E --> F{Is the LORD in Shishodaya?}
F -->|Yes| G[Lord takes earliest available 1/3]
F -->|No - Prishtodaya| H[Lord takes latest available 1/3]
G & H --> I[Remaining 1/3 → Planets occupying or aspecting by Rashi Drishti]
I --> J[Order = Chara Karaka longitude rank - most advanced first]
Sign Classification reminder:
| Type | Signs | Memory Aid |
|---|---|---|
| Prishtodaya (back-rising) | Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn | Numbers: 1, 2, 4, 9, 10 |
| Ubhayodaya (both-rising) | Pisces only | Two fish, two directions |
| Shishodaya (head-rising) | Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius | Everything else |
Four-part sub-rule within each planet's 1/3:
| Quarter | Benefic Planet | Malefic Planet |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Results of occupied house | Results of avastha (state) |
| 2nd | Results of owned houses | Results of yogas |
| 3rd | Results of yogas | Results of owned houses |
| 4th | Results of avastha (state) | Results of occupied house |
[!IMPORTANT] The chart's promise sets the ceiling and floor. A dasha merely moves results within that range — it cannot give what the natal chart does not promise.
Vimshottari Dasha variation:
- Use a three-part rule (not four), dividing into first 3, middle 3, and last 3 antardashas (not equal time).
- Benefic planet: 1st third = occupied/owned houses; 2nd = yogas; 3rd = state.
🌌 3. Navamsa Narayana Dasha — Marriage Timing (Case Study) {#navamsa-marriage}
Chart: Sep 12, 1971, 8:25 AM IST, Guntur, India (80°23'E, 16°13'N).
Task: Verify that Libra Mahadasha (Sep 1992 – Sep 1994) in Navamsa Narayana Dasha gave marriage.
[!TIP] To compute Navamsa Narayana Dasha in JHora: Rasi Dashas tab → Narayana Dasha → Options → "Narayana Dasha of which DN?" → select Navamsa → confirm Normal Narayana Dasha.
Why Libra Was a Strong Marriage Candidate
flowchart LR
UL[Upapada in Sagittarius\n= Jupiter's sign] --> JupDK[Jupiter = Darakaraka]
JupDK --> AspLag[Jupiter aspects Navamsa Lagna]
LibraLord[Venus = lord of Libra] --> InUL[Venus placed IN Upapada Lagna]
InUL --> KV[Venus with Ketu\n= marriage significator]
Strong candidates: Libra and Sagittarius. Sagittarius arrives at age 41 — too late for a traditional Indian woman. Hence Libra is the active prediction.
Applying the Three-Parts Rule to Libra Dasha
| Part | Who? | Logic | Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st 1/3 | Libra itself | Libra is Shishodaya → takes first available | First 4 antardashas |
| 2nd 1/3 | Associations (Jupiter alone aspects) | Venus (lord) is in Sagittarius (Prishtodaya) → takes last 1/3 | Middle 4 antardashas |
| 3rd 1/3 | Venus (lord of Libra) | Prishtodaya → takes last | Last 4 antardashas |
Pinpointing with the Four-Part Sub-Rule (Jupiter's portion)
Jupiter = natural benefic → order: occupied house → owned houses → yogas → avastha.
| Quarter | Result | Period | Marriage? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 11th house (Darapada) where Jupiter sits | May–Jul 1993 | Possible |
| 2nd | Ownership: 3rd, 6th, AND Upapada Lagna (Sagittarius) | Jul 11 – Sep 11, 1993 | HIGHEST probability |
| 3rd | Yogas (none significant here) | — | Background |
| 4th | Avastha: Jupiter in very friendly sign, strong Ucchabala | — | Good period |
Verdict confirmed: She married during Jul–Sep 1993 (Jupiter's second quarter of his 1/3, when he gives ownership results = Upapada lordship).
🌌 4. Marriage Definition & Upapada Rules {#marriage-definition}
[!IMPORTANT] Upapada Lagna (UL) = Arudha of the 12th house = dharmic give-and-take of marriage. Darapada = Arudha of the 7th house = physical/desire aspect. Darakaraka = planet with lowest longitude = significator of spouse at soul level.
Marriage = confluence of three factors:
flowchart LR
L[Lagna\nPhysical reality] --- UL[Upapada Lagna\nDharmic give & take]
UL --- DK[Darakaraka\nSoul connection]
L & UL & DK --> M[Marriage]
Sanjay Rath's definition: If two people stay together for at least one year without thinking of another person — that is marriage (regardless of legal ceremony).
Multiple Marriages:
- 1st marriage: Upapada Lagna
- 2nd marriage: 8th from Upapada Lagna
- 3rd marriage: 8th from that, and so on (up to 12 in theory)
[!WARNING] In modern times (Kali Yuga), missing an early serious relationship will shift all Upapada counts — making what the astrologer thinks is the "first marriage" actually the second. Always probe for serious prior relationships.
Ketu's special nature for marriage:
| Planet | Benefic or malefic for marriage? |
|---|---|
| Ketu | Benefic — for marriage, children, and moksha ONLY; malefic for everything else |
| Sun | Benefic — for bringing/sustaining dharmic marriage via 2nd lord from UL |
| Saturn | Malefic in general |
Remedy for delayed marriage: Fast on the weekday of the Upapada lord, and before breaking the fast, pray to the deity of the 2nd lord from Upapada Lagna (the planet that "brings" the marriage).
🌌 5. Dasamsa Narayana Dasha — Career Timing (Case Study) {#dasamsa-career}
How to find Dasamsa Narayana Dasha: Take the 10th lord in the Rashi chart; find where he is in the Dasamsa; take that sign as Lagna and apply standard Narayana Dasha rules.
"In the Rashi chart, Narayana lives in your physical existence. In Dasamsa, Narayana lives in the work you do in that professional environment — i.e., the 10th house."
Same chart (Sep 12, 1971), Aquarius Mahadasha in Dasamsa:
| 1/3 | Ruler | Logic | Career Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Aquarius itself (5th house = recognition) | Shishodaya → takes first | Got job, worked ~2 years, then laid off (Mrityu Pada also in Aquarius) |
| 2nd | Rahu (lord of Aquarius, stronger than Saturn via dual-sign rule) | Rahu in Ubhayodaya → takes middle | Could not find job; wanted business (Rahu–Mars Raja Yoga = 5th+7th lords → independence, not service) |
| 3rd | Sun, Moon, Mercury (aspectors of Aquarius) | Order by longitude: Moon (29°) → Sun (26°) → Mercury (7°) | Business gains expected ~2008–2009 (Sun's period) |
[!NOTE] Moon + Mercury = Dharma-Karma Adhipati Yoga in Lagna (9th lord + 10th lord). A great Raja Yoga. When they give results in the last 1/3 of Aquarius Dasha, career peaks.
Four-Part Sub-Rule on Rahu's 1/3
| Quarter | Rahu's Result | Period | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Avastha (malefic) — in Adhishatru sign (Pisces/Jupiter's sign) | ~May 2003 – Jul 2003 | No job, rejection |
| 2nd | Yoga: Rahu + Mars = 5th + 7th lord Raja Yoga → business impulse | ~2003–2004 | Tried business ventures, refused job offers |
| 3rd | Ownership: 5th lord → recognition, lucky break | ~Mar 2005 – Feb 2006 | Favorable — something materializes |
| 4th | Placement: 6th house | ~2006–2007 | Hard work, contract job or A3 = short-term venture |
🌌 6. Sixth House — Obstacles, Overcoming, and Malefic Logic {#sixth-house}
[!IMPORTANT] The behavior of a planet in the 6th house depends on its own agenda:
| Planet in 6th | Agenda | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Malefic (e.g., Rahu) with 5th-house agenda | Succeed, recognize abilities | Gives obstacles AND overcomes them → success through hard work |
| Benefic (e.g., Jupiter) | No obstacles to overcome | Happy but complacent — obstacles are not overcome |
| 6th lord itself in 6th | Both obstacles and success | Gives both — hard work and victory |
| 8th lord in 6th | 8th-house agenda (anxiety) | Gives obstacles + anxiety; may give failure |
🌌 7. Dwaadashamsha Narayana Dasha — Parental Relations {#dwadashamsha}
Purpose: Shows how your relationship with parents progresses — not what happens to parents independently.
How to find: Take the 12th lord in the Rashi chart; see where he is in the Dwaadashamsha (D12); take that sign as Lagna; apply standard Narayana Dasha rules.
"The 12th house is give-and-take, compromise. This dasha shows how you are compromising with your parents — i.e., the quality of the relationship over time."
Case: Wife's D12 (same chart):
| Dasha | House from Capricorn lagna | Key planets | Relationship with Parents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capricorn | — | Debilitated Jupiter (6th lord) aspects it | Middle 1/3: friction ~1991–1992 (friction over career/moving away from home) |
| Taurus | 8th house | Lagna lord Venus aspects; Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter aspect | 1st third excellent (parents visited Oct); separation when Jupiter gives 6th-lord separation |
| Virgo | 9th house | Sun (8th lord) aspects | Last 1/3 problematic — health issues for mother, bone problem (Sun = bones) |
[!WARNING] When sign = 8th house (Taurus here), the dasha brings anxiety about parents, not necessarily quarrels. A parent's health may deteriorate.
🌌 8. Seeing Father/Mother Specifically via D12 {#father-mother-d12}
Mother: Take 4th house as her lagna; find stronger of 4th/10th sign in D12; set that as starting sign; find D12 Narayana Dasha.
Father: Take 9th house as his lagna; find stronger of 9th/3rd sign in D12; set that as starting sign; find D12 Narayana Dasha.
[!TIP] In JHora: Narayana Dasha → Options → "Start Dashas from" → select Capricorn (mother) or Gemini (father) instead of "Use the default."
Father's D12 Narayana Dasha (Gemini lagna):
| Dasha | Key | Prediction | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgo | 9th house | Long-distance travel, foreign trips | Mother visited US 4 times |
| Capricorn (current) | 8th house, Jupiter debilitated | Retirement (10th lord in 8th = career transformation) | Retired 2004 — promoted first, then retired at higher pension scale |
| Leo | 3rd house (initiative, contract work) | Consultancy / independent work possible | Expected ~2007 onwards |
🌌 9. Navamsa Dasha for Spouse & Saptamsa for Children {#navamsa-spouse-saptamsa}
Navamsa — Seeing Husband's Fortune
Take the 7th house in Navamsa as lagna (or stronger of 7th / 1st). Apply standard Narayana Dasha rules treating this chart as a Rashi chart.
Leo Dasha example (7th-house Aries lagna in Navamsa):
| 1/3 | Giver | Key Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Leo itself (5th house = recognition, contains AL) | Good image, recognition of abilities |
| 2nd | Sun (lord of Leo, in Shishodaya sign) | Mixed — some anxiety + occult recognition |
| 3rd | Jupiter + Saturn (aspectors) | Career gains from Dharma-Karma Adhipati Yoga |
Saptamsa — Seeing a Child's Fortune
- Use Paksha Narayana Dasha (count from lord to sign, not sign to lord — reverse of normal).
- Take the lord of the child's house (5th = 1st child, 7th from 5th = 2nd child) as lagna in D7.
- Find the stronger of that sign and its opposite; apply Paksha Narayana Dasha.
[!WARNING] Paksha Narayana Dasha is used only for Drekkana and Saptamsa (siblings and children). Always switch back to Normal Narayana Dasha for all other charts.
🌌 10. Three Variations of Navamsa Narayana Dasha {#three-navamsa-variations}
| Variation | Starting Point | What It Shows |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (default) | 9th lord of Rashi chart placed in Navamsa | How dharma is upheld in marital life; timing of marriage |
| 2nd | 7th lord of Rashi chart placed in Navamsa | How relationship (give-and-take with spouse) progresses |
| 3rd | 7th house in Navamsa itself (stronger of 7th/1st) | What happens to the spouse independently (his/her career, health, etc.) |
"Narayana lives in so many things — in my speech, in my driving, in every part of my intelligence. Each Narayana Dasha variation = interaction between one environment (divisional chart) and one aspect of the Narayana within me."
🌌 11. 🔔 Nimittas — Omens During Prediction {#nimittas}
[!TIP] Nimittas (signs/omens) are spontaneous signals from the divine confirming or correcting predictions:
| Sign | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Bell ringing when you say something | That prediction will come true |
| Small child/boy entering the room | Mercury is the planet giving the result (not Saturn) |
| Any auspicious sound at the moment of pronouncement | God's confirmation |
"If it happens by itself, without your manipulation, that means God is telling you, 'Yes, you are thinking in the right line.'"
[!WARNING] Do not arrange a Nimitta deliberately — it will not work. The sign must arise spontaneously.
🌌 12. 💻 Software Notes {#software}
- Navamsa Narayana Dasha: Rasi Dashas tab → Narayana Dasha → Options → DN = Navamsa → Normal Narayana Dasha.
- Dasamsa Narayana Dasha: Same path, DN = Dasamsa.
- D12 for mother: Options → Start Dashas From → select Capricorn (or whichever is the 4th-house sign / stronger of axis).
- D12 for father: Options → Start Dashas From → Gemini (9th house or stronger of axis).
- Paksha Narayana Dasha: Available as a variation in JHora — for Drekkana/Saptamsa child/sibling analysis.
- Bug noted: JHora Yoga calculation module does not recognize Rahu/Ketu as Kendra/Trikona lords when computing Raja Yogas — fix pending.
