🕉️ Class 61 — Karakamsha: Atmakaraka in the Divisional Signs

Parashara's Chapter 33 of BPHS (Karakamsha Phalam) is decoded verse by verse — revealing which divisional chart to apply for each sign result, why amsha never defaults to Navamsa, and how the Atmakaraka's placement encodes the full texture of a person's existence. A live chart reading for house-purchase timing closes the class.

🪔 Opening Invocation

Om Hare Ramakrishna, Hare Ramakrishna, Hare Ramakrishna. Om Pam Parasharaya Namah (×4)

The class opens the BPHS Chapter 33 (Ath Karakamsha Sadasthayah) on Karakamsha Phalam.

📖 Chapter 33 — Karakamsha Phalam: Verse-by-Verse

Opening Verse

Athaham Sampravakshyami Karakamsha Phalam Dwija Meshaadi Rasisye Swamsye Yathavad Brahma Bhashitam

"Thus I speak the results of Karakamsha — in Aries and so on — as spoken by Brahma earlier."

  • Karakamsha = amsha (division) of the karaka (significator).
  • Swamsya is used as a synonym of Karakamsha — pointing to Atmakaraka specifically (swa = self).
  • When no specific karaka is named, assume Atmakaraka.

🪐 Atmakaraka Sign Results by Amsha

[!IMPORTANT] Parashara does not restrict these results to Navamsa. Each result belongs to whichever divisional chart governs that subject matter — inferred from context.

Sign (Amsha) Sanskrit Key Result Most Likely Amsha
Aries (Mesha) Sadabhayat Prada, Papayukte Visheshatah Fear, discomfort; worse with malefic conjunction Trimsamsa (D30)
Taurus (Vrishabha) Sukhadastyat Chatushpadaah Happiness from four-legged animals (cattle, horses) D4 or D16
Gemini (Mithuna) Kandu vyadhi sambhavah Skin diseases possible D30 or D1 (Rashi)
Cancer (Karka) Jalad bhitih Danger / fear from water D30
Leo (Simha) Svapadadbhayam Danger from wild animals (lions, tigers) D30
Virgo (Kanya) Kanduhu sthaulyam, vahnikanadbhayam Skin problems, corpulence, fear from fire D30
Libra (Tula) Vanijyaato, Vastradi nirmanaye patu Skilled businessman; excels in clothes, jewellery, decorative arts D10 (Dashamsa)
Scorpio (Ali/Vrishchika) Sarpatho bhitih, piedaamaatuh payodhare Danger from snakes/insects; trouble with maternal nourishment in infancy D30 / relevant divisional
Sagittarius (Dhanu) Krama ucchat patanam vahanad api Fall from height or from a vehicle; accidents D16
Capricorn (Makara) Jalo bhutai jantu, sankha mukta pravalad yai labha Gains from sea-creatures, birds, pearls, corals, gems D2 / D4 / D10
Aquarius (Kumbha) Tatakaadi kaarako jayate Creates water reservoirs, ponds; work with liquids/chemicals; technology D10
Pisces (Meena) Muktibhag dvidasattama Fortunate for Moksha; spiritual liberation D20 (Vimshamsa)

Why Each Sign Works — Reasoning

Aries → Mars rules, fixed, male → fear/discomfort
Taurus → Venus rules, comfort, cattle ownership
Gemini  → Mercury skin rulership
Cancer → Water sign → water danger; Moon (mother) debilitated
Leo → Fire sign, jungle → wild animals
Virgo → Earthiest sign (earthy sign + earthy lord) → corpulence + skin + fire malefics in 8th/12th
Libra → Natural 7th house (business/diplomacy), Venus → luxury articles
Scorpio → Mars, natural 8th, ksetra rashi → snakes/insects; Moon debilitated → maternal deprivation
Sagittarius → Natural 6th from 4th (Cancer) = accidents; Jupiter enemy of Venus (vehicle karaka)
Capricorn → Watery environment, sea trade, gems
Aquarius → Rahu + Saturn → technology/construction + water
Pisces  → Jupiter + 12th house energy → Moksha / kaivalya

🔬 The Amsha ≠ Navamsa Problem

[!WARNING] The common assumption that amsha always means Navamsa is a cultural distortion of the last few centuries — not Parashara's actual instruction.

Parashara's Own Guideline

Parashara assigned each divisional chart to a specific life domain:

Divisional Domain
D1 (Rashi) Overall chart, body
D2 Wealth
D4 Happiness, property, fortune
D7 Children
D9 (Navamsa) Marriage, dharma
D10 Career, Karma
D12 Parents
D16 Vehicles, comforts
D20 Spiritual progress, Upasana
D24 Learning, scholarship
D27 Strengths/weaknesses
D30 (Trimsamsa) Suffering, disease, sin, evil
D40 Maternal legacy
D45 Paternal legacy
D60 Past-life karma (Shashtipavesa)

Rule: When Parashara gives a result involving a certain life-domain (disease, career, Moksha, gains), the amsha he implies is the one he himself assigned to that domain — not Navamsa by default.

[!NOTE] The debate between K.N. Rao (transpose AK from Navamsa to Rashi) and Pandit Sanjay Rath (stay in Navamsa) may both be partially correct — but neither captures the full richness Parashara intended across all 16 divisional charts.

The "Ka" Suffix Clarification

Vrishamsyaka vs Vrishamsya — the Sanskrit suffix ka adds no astrological meaning. Examples:

  • Bala = Balaka (both mean "boy")
  • Ka is simply a diminutive ornament in Sanskrit, not a technical signal
  • Parashara mixes amsya and amsyaka in consecutive verses for the same concept

🌌 Divisional Longitude Research Vision

[!TIP] One of the most under-explored frontiers in Jyotish: correlating divisional longitudes across multiple charts simultaneously.

graph TD
    A[Physical Planets in Bhachakra] --> B[Divisional Longitudes derived]
    B --> C[Navamsa longitudes]
    B --> D[Dashamsa longitudes]
    B --> E[Vimshamsa longitudes]
    B --> F[Trimsamsa longitudes]
    C & D & E & F --> G[Cross-chart proximity analysis]
    G --> H[New principles awaiting discovery]
    H --> I[Renaissance in Jyotish]

Key insight: There is one zodiac (Bhachakra), one set of planets. Divisional charts are abstract representations of real longitudes. Plotting them all on one chart is valid — just complex. Correlations between:

  • Transit and natal divisional longitudes
  • Shashtipavesa and natal chart
  • Dasha lord and natal divisional position
  • Multiple divisional charts simultaneously

...represent a wealth of undiscovered knowledge.

✨ Benefics, Malefics & Moksha from Atma

Benefic/Malefic Modifiers (from Chapter 33)

Na subham subhasamdushte — If a functional malefic affects [a planet giving inauspicious results], those bad results don't apply. Na subham paapaveekshite — If a functional malefic aspects [a planet giving good results], those good results don't apply.

Condition Result
Benefic in Karakamsha + Lagnaamsha; benefic aspect Raja bhavati nishchitah — definitely becomes a king (very successful)
Mixed benefic/malefic influence Mixed results
Malefic influence on good placements Good results negated

Upagraha and Moksha

Upagrahecha viprendra swoccha swarksha subharkshage Papadrugrahi teshaantye kaivalyam tasya nirdhiset

If an Upagraha (Mandi, Gulika, Yamakantaka, etc.) is placed:

  • In the 12th house from Atmakaraka
  • In exaltation, own sign, or a benefic sign
  • Without malefic aspect

→ Even that Upagraha alone can confer Kaivalya (liberation or proximity to liberation).

Upagraha associations with planets:

Upagraha Associated Planet
Kala Sun
Mrityu Mars
Ardhaprahara Mercury
Yamakantaka Jupiter
Gulika / Mandi Saturn

[!NOTE] Exaltation/own signs of Upagrahas are not clearly defined by Parashara — a research gap. One approach: use the exaltation/own sign of the associated planet.

Kaivalya vs Moksha

  • Moksha = complete dissolution of ego in Brahman
  • Kaivalya = from Kevala (oneness/singularity) — can mean merger in Brahman or reaching a higher Loka and dwelling with a deity (Vaikuntha, Shivaloka) for the remainder of that cosmic term

👑 Atmakaraka as the King of the Horoscope

[!IMPORTANT] Atmakaraka is not limited to Moksha/spirituality. He governs the full spectrum of existence.

What is Atmakaraka?

graph LR
    AK[Atmakaraka] --> I[I-ness / Ego Sense]
    I --> M[Material pursuits]
    I --> S[Spiritual liberation]
    I --> R[Raja Yoga — kings, presidents]
    I --> B[Bandha — bondage to identity]
    AK --> L[Lagna = body identification]
    AK --> MK[12th from AK = letting go of I-ness = Moksha path]

Parashara calls Atmakaraka "Bandha Moksha Karaka" — the one who binds and also liberates.

  • Strong 12th from AK → I-ness ready to dissolve → Moksha path
  • Strong 10th from AK → I-ness needs to express through karma/work
  • Strong 9th from AK → dharma, temple-building, guru service
  • Strong 6th from AK → service, scholarship
  • Strong 5th from AKpurva punya, devotion, learning

[!TIP] Do not habitually prescribe the 12th house from AK (Ishta Devata) for everyone. Look at which house is strongest from AK — that is the person's current spiritual assignment in this life. Not everyone is destined for Moksha this lifetime.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Illustration

Ramakrishna gave different guidance to different disciples:

  • A mild disciple who tolerated insults was asked to be bold and defend his guru
  • An angry disciple who fought with rowdy insultors was asked to be calm

The same principle applies to Jyotish counselling: prescribe the path that matches the person's current spiritual house from Atmakaraka, not a universal formula.

🏠 Live Chart — House Purchase Timing

Native: Male | DOB: June 20, 1963 | 10:20 AM (rectified to ~10:22:35 AM) | Nusvi (Nosvid), India

Rectification note: Original time 10:20 AM was adjusted +2m 34s based on Tithi Pravesh chart — Mercury (7th lord in Navamsa) + Jupiter (lagna lord), both in Aries in the 2nd house, fitting marriage in Nov 27, 1987.

Natal Chart Overview

Parameter Detail
Lagna Leo, 8°58′
Moon Taurus, 17°8′ (Rohini 3rd pada)
Atmakaraka Saturn
Jnatakaraka Sun
Amavasya/Dosha Chatushpaya dosha present

Query: Sold house Dec 15, 2009 (during Saturn-Saturn). Now in apartment. When to buy new house in 2010?

Why Was House Sold in Saturn Dasha?

flowchart LR
    Saturn[Saturn = 4th lord] --> 12H[Placed in 12th house]
    12H --> Displacement[Displacement / Loss of residence]
    Saturn --> 11H[Bhadra from 4th = lord in 9th from 4th]
    11H --> Sale[Sale = Money received]
    MercPratyantar[Mercury Pratyantar = 8th lord] --> Sudden[Sudden, unexpected change]

Key principle: Fourth lord in 12th = instability/displacement with respect to house. But Saturn's agenda is still to give house (he's the 4th lord). His placement merely delayed/displaced it.

When to Buy: Dasha-Antardasha Analysis

Running dashas around 2010:

  • Vimshottari: Saturn Mahadasha, Saturn Antardasha
  • Chaturtha Samudaya Dasha: Venus (from lagna)

Pratyantar Dasha sequence: Venus → Sun → Moon

Pratyantar Verdict
Venus A4 lord in 12th house (investment); possible start of search
Sun Strongest candidate — Sun in A4 (1st from A4); owns A6 (loan house); 8th house from Lagna showing change
Moon In 4th house of D4 Tithi Pravesh; owns A6; with Jupiter (Lagna lord + A4 lord) and Rahu; Gajakesari yoga

Sun Pratyantar window: September 7 – October 31, 2010

Tithi Pravesh Chart (2010)

Tithi Pravesh for 2010 falls on: July 10, 2010 at 17:52:47 IST

  • Year ruler: Mercury (7th + 10th lord in 7th house)
  • Tithi Dasha running during the Sep–Oct window: Moon Dasha (overlapping Mars)
  • Moon in D4: 4th house (residence), with Jupiter (A4 lord + Lagna lord) and Rahu (12th lord); owns A6 (loans)
  • Moon at 25° Gemini — very close to 4th house cusp from A4 in D4 → argala on A4
flowchart TD
    Moon[Moon Dasha in Tithi Pravesh 2010] --> 4H[4th house of D4 = residence]
    Moon --> A6[Owns A6 = Loan house]
    Moon --> JupCj[Conjunct Jupiter = A4 lord]
    Moon --> Argala[Argala on A4]
    Moon --> Conclusion[Strong probability: New house purchase]
    Sun[Sun Pratyantar Sep–Oct] --> A4occ[Occupies A4 in D4]
    Sun --> A6own[Owns A6]
    Sun --> 8H[8th house from Lagna = Change of residence]
    Sun --> Conclusion

Conclusion: Maximum probability window for house purchase = September–October 2010, during Saturn/Saturn/Sun Pratyantar in Vimshottari + Moon Dasha in Tithi Dasha.

Atmakaraka Analysis for This Native

Divisional AK Placement Interpretation
Navamsa (D9) Virgo Grounded, intellectual, good communication in marital/relational sphere
Trimsamsa (D30) Scorpio Risk of snake/insect-related issues, Pitta imbalance, inbuilt anger/short temper
Dashamsa (D10) Gemini (with Amatyakaraka) Career nature: logical, intellectual, communicative approach to work
Vimshamsa (D20) (Sun + Moon + Jupiter in 12th from Saturn as lagna) Three planets in 12th from AK — very strong Moksha indicators in spiritual chart

🔧 jHora 7.4 — True Nodes vs Mean Nodes

[!NOTE] This applies to users noticing discrepancies between jHora 7.33 and 7.4 when using "Author Recommended Settings."

The Issue

Rahu/Ketu longitude shifts by a couple of degrees (sometimes changing divisional sign) between 7.33 and 7.4.

Cause: 7.4 Author Recommended Settings default to True Nodes; 7.33 used Mean Nodes.

True Nodes vs Mean Nodes

Mean Nodes True Nodes
Always retrograde? Yes (by definition) No — can briefly move forward
Physically real? Abstract concept only Actual eclipse calculation nodes
Used for eclipses? No Yes
PVR recommendation Historical default Current recommendation

Why True Nodes?

  1. Mean nodes are an abstraction; true nodes are physically meaningful
  2. Retrograde motion of Rahu is a long-term trend, not a per-second requirement — same logic as Jupiter being prograde overall despite brief retrogrades
  3. Divisional longitude research (especially sensitive techniques) validated true nodes practically

To restore Mean Nodes in 7.4: Preferences → Calculations → Planet Calculation Options → last combo box → change "True Nodes" back to "Mean Nodes."
