🕉️ Class 58 — Arudha Padas in Mundane Astrology: India, Gandhi, Bush, and Eclipse Charts
After a long break (SJF Boston Workshop in Maynard), the class resumes with a fundamental teaching on the distinction between Bhava (house) and Pada (Arudha) — the intangible versus the tangible — then applies this rigorously to India's annual chart, Mahatma Gandhi's Dashamsha, Indira Gandhi's death, and eclipse charts for Pakistan's earthquake and the US 2004 presidential election.

🔔 Opening & Announcements
- Return after three-week break including the SJF Boston Workshop in Maynard — thanked students for making it a success.
- Homework due: Compare the US Lunar New Year chart for the year of Hurricane Katrina (2005) with 1900 (year of the Galveston hurricane). Both years saw massive water-related destruction; check if the charts show similar patterns. Use the Mundane tab in JHora → Lunar New Year chart for Washington, DC.
- Current events discussed: India train accident (200 deaths), Delhi bomb blast (100 deaths). Teacher uses these to teach mundane astrology.
🇮🇳 India's Current Year Chart — Venus Dasha Analysis
India Independence Chart: August 15, 1947 · Midnight · Delhi, India (77°13'E, 28°40'N)
[!IMPORTANT] On using Vimshottari Dasha for countries: The theoretical foundation is suspect. Vimshottari Dasha assumes a 120-year paramayus (maximum lifespan). This applies to humans. For countries, there is no classical guidance on what the paramayus should be (1000 years? unknown). Until this is known, the annual chart (Tithi Pravesha) is the safest approach for country analysis — it works for both humans and countries.
India's Tithi Pravesha (Annual Chart) for 2005:
- Date: August 3, 2005 · 3:48:45 AM IST · Delhi, India
- Hora Lord (ruler of the year) = Sun
Venus Dasha and Tangible Destruction
Why Venus can bring destruction:
| Factor | How Venus Connects to A8 (Mrityupada) |
|---|---|
| Lord of A8 | Venus owns the sign containing A8 |
| Rashi Drishti on A8 | Venus is in a fixed sign; A8 is in a movable sign → Venus aspects it by sign |
| Argala | Venus has argala (intervention) on A8 from one of the argala positions (2nd, 4th, or 11th from A8) |
| A4 in 12th house | Tangible happiness and comfort (A4) is in the 12th house of loss → visible signs of unhappiness in the country |
Venus is also Jala tattva (water element) — destruction during a Venus period can involve water-related events (floods, storms). Venus also = patriotism, passion, strong ideals (Parashurama's planet). Therefore, terrorist or ideologically-driven violence is also possible.
[!NOTE] A8 also shows sudden positive events — inheritance, lottery, unexpected gains. Venus alone owning A8 doesn't confirm destruction vs. windfall; you must look at what the eighth house itself is showing. If it is showing suffering and setbacks, A8 will manifest destructively. If it is showing sudden gains, A8 will manifest as inheritance/fortune.
🏛️ Bhava vs. Pada: The Core Distinction
[!IMPORTANT] This is the single most important concept in the class. Drill it in.

Application:
| To See | Use |
|---|---|
| A person's anxiety about death | 8th house |
| An actual accident where people died | A8 (Mrityupada) |
| The happiness a country feels | 4th house |
| A tangible disaster that makes news | A8 + 3rd from Arudha Lagna |
| A person's tendency toward struggle | 6th house |
| Actual enemies, actual fights in court | A6 |
| Spiritual inclination | 9th house |
| A person's actual fortune, lucky events | A9 (Bhagyapada) |
| Career karma, inner drive | 10th house |
| Actual work done, meetings attended, visibility | A10 |
| Popularity, following | 5th house |
| Tangible following — approval ratings, crowds | A5 |
Summary: "Bhava is like a concept in the mind that you can't see. Pada is like a word that expresses it — you can understand it, touch it, measure it." — Narasimha
☠️ Mrityupada (A8) and Tangible Death Events
Mrityupada (A8) = Arudha Pada of the 8th house. In Sanskrit: mrityu = death; pada = word/tangible expression.
- A8 shows: Tangible, visible events relating to death, destruction, sudden changes, and sudden gains.
- Who activates A8: Any planet that is the lord of A8, that occupies A8, that has argala on A8, or has Rashi Drishti on A8.
- In India's chart: A8 is in Libra. It is also the third from Arudha Lagna — double confirmation of death-related events.
Argala (Intervention)
Every house has argala from planets in three positions:
| Position | Type |
|---|---|
| 2nd house from the house | Primary argala |
| 4th house from the house | Primary argala |
| 11th house from the house | Primary argala |
Planets in these positions intervene in that house's outcomes. Think of it as a corporate project: the lord is the manager, planets in the house are team members, planets with argala are cross-functional contributors, planets with sign aspect have some role, planets with graha drishti have a desire to contribute.
⚡ Apamrutyu Sahama — Unexpected, Bad Death
Apamrutyu = apa (bad/undesirable prefix) + mrityu (death) = unexpected, bad, sudden death.
- Sahamas are sensitive points in the zodiac computed for various matters.
- In India's 2005 annual chart, the Apamrutyu Sahama falls at 9° Libra — the same Libra that contains A8 AND is the 3rd from Arudha Lagna.
- Triple confirmation: A8 + 3rd from AL + Apamrutyu Sahama all in the same degree area = extremely strong indicator of sudden mass deaths during that year.
[!TIP] When analyzing a specific bad event, look for convergence: multiple independent indicators (Bhava, Pada, Sahama) all pointing at the same house/sign. A single indicator is insufficient; convergence confirms.
🎯 Third from Arudha Lagna — Nature of Death
The 3rd house from Arudha Lagna (in the Rasi chart) shows:
- How and in what circumstances a person dies in this life
- The sign reveals the type of place (battlefield, garden, marketplace, hospital, etc.)
- The planets there reveal the nature of death (violent, peaceful, sudden, etc.)
The 3rd from Arudha Lagna in Shashtiamsha (D-60) shows:
- How the person died in the previous life
- Resulting phobias in this life (e.g., Moon there = drowned last life → hydrophobia this life)
Sign Meanings for Death Place (Jaimini)
| Sign | Place |
|---|---|
| Libra | Marketplace, mall, commercial area |
| Gemini | Garden, media places, communication hubs, parks with trees |
| Capricorn | Marshland, waterlogged area |
| Aries | War zone, heated confrontation |
Planet Meanings for Nature of Death
| Planet | Nature of Death |
|---|---|
| Sun | Fire, firearms, heat-related illness, high fever; Raja Tiraskara (killed by state) |
| Mars | Violent, aggressive, bloodshed |
| Ketu | Sudden, explosive, terrorist; headless/irrational motivation |
| Rahu | Terrorist, religious extremism, eccentric ideology |
| Mandi/Gulika | Poison from others; terrible, gruesome end |
| Moon | Water-related; flooding, drowning |
| Venus | Water-related (secondary); passion-driven violence |
[!WARNING] Always combine: planet (nature) + sign (place/circumstances) + 2nd/7th/8th from AL (Maraka context). The third from AL alone does not confirm when death occurs. For timing, look at Maraka dashas.
🧘 Mahatma Gandhi's Chart — Arudha Lagna and Dashamsha
Chart data: October 2, 1869 · 7:21 AM (LMT, +4:39 of GMT) · Porbandar (69°49'E, 21°37'N)
Arudha Lagna = Cancer
| Position | Image |
|---|---|
| Moon (own house) + Rahu in Cancer (AL) | Dominant image: Compassionate, kind, forgiving (Moon own house) — the Mahatma, the great soul |
| Rahu in AL | Scandalous image in some circles — cheat/manipulator perception exists in certain segments |
| Moon vs. Rahu | Moon 14° apart from Rahu (not close enough for eclipse). Moon in own house = far stronger → peaceful saint image dominates |
| Jupiter in Aries (10th from AL) | World perceives him as engaging in peaceful war — Aries (conflict/Mars) + Jupiter (peace, wisdom) = non-violent struggle |
[!NOTE] Rahu in Arudha Lagna = scandal. In any chart, Rahu in AL creates a scandalous image in some section of society. Gandhi is indeed regarded negatively by certain sections of Hindu society. Moon's strength in own house ensures the saint image prevails overall.
Dashamsha (D-10) Analysis — Career
From D-10, the house A8 (Mrityupada) associates with determines the character of his career:
- A8 (suffering) in 6th house = Career defined by struggle. Throughout his life, his tangible work was entwined with suffering.
- A4 (tangible comfort) in 12th house of loss, in a Martian sign = Gives up all comforts throughout his career. (Note: India's chart had A4 in 12th but in Venusian sign = less severe. Gandhi's is Martian = quite bad.)
- A10 (Rajapada) and A8 together in 6th = Tangible work is linked to tangible suffering.
- 5th lord (Mars) + 6th lord (Venus) in 7th house = Dhimanta Yoga = Using all his intelligence and abilities in struggle, service — not just learning and relaxing. He will put his abilities to maximum use.
👑 Choosing the Right Nakshatra Dasha
[!IMPORTANT] Rule for selecting the best Nakshatra Dasha for a chart: Two criteria — choose the dasha that satisfies both:
- Longest years (more specificity, more granularity)
- Least probable / most rare condition
Example — Gandhi's chart:
| Dasha Criterion | Dasha |
|---|---|
| 7th lord Mars in Lagna (or Lagna lord in 7th) — probability ~1/6 | Viswakarma Samudrascha |
| 10th lord in 10th house — probability 1/12 | Chaturthimsa Samudrascha |
Chaturthimsa Samudrascha wins on both criteria (1/12 < 1/6; longer years). This dasha gives the clearest reading of events in Gandhi's life.
Gandhi's Dashas (Chaturthimsa):
| Period | Dasha | Expectation |
|---|---|---|
| 1919–1931 | Venus | Venus (6th lord, with Mars in D-10 7th house) = struggle, passion, fighting for cause. Dhimanta Yoga prominent. A8 and A4 in his career define this as a decade of hardship. |
| 1943–1955 | Sun | Sun is 9th lord in 11th house = Fortune + Fulfillment of desire. A7 + A5 together in Leo (Sun's sign) = associating with kings/prime ministers/powerful people. Kamatrikona — desire (freedom struggle) fulfilled. India gets independence (1947 falls in Sun dasha). |
Sun is in nica (debilitated) but has nica-banga Raja Yoga — Moon and Mars provide cancellation. Sun did not enjoy personal power; his associates (A7) enjoyed the power (Nehru etc. became leaders).
🗡️ Indira Gandhi — Death Analysis from Arudha Lagna
Arudha Lagna = Aries (Mars sign)
| Position | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Aries = AL | Image of a warrior — Durga, Chandi. Unforgiving, destroys enemies. "Durga" in media during Emergency. |
| 3rd from AL = Gemini | Place of death = garden (Gemini), media/communication place |
| Ketu in Gemini | Sudden, explosive, irrational/terrorist killing |
| Rahu aspecting Gemini | Terrorist/extremist motivation confirmed |
| Mandi in Gemini with Ketu | Mandi (Gulika, Saturn's most malefic son) = poison from others. Terrible, gruesome death. |
| Debilitation note | For longevity (Ayur) purposes, use Ayur dignities for Rahu/Ketu: Ketu exalted in Scorpio, debilitated in Taurus (not Gemini). So Ketu is NOT debilitated in Gemini for longevity/death analysis. |
Her own bodyguards shot her in a garden — Gemini (garden, communication path she was walking on), Ketu+Rahu+Mandi (terrorist ideology, sudden, violent, irrational). For who killed her: look at 6th house (servants) and graha Arudha of the 6th lord.
Rahu/Ketu — Two Sets of Dignities
| Purpose | Rahu exalted | Ketu exalted |
|---|---|---|
| Phalita (general results) | Gemini | Sagittarius |
| Ayur (longevity/health/death) | Taurus | Scorpio |
[!TIP] Use Ayur dignities when analyzing: the 3rd from Arudha Lagna for death circumstances; longevity analysis (Ayur Khanda); any house/planet in the context of health and lifespan.
Who Killed Her — Methodological Note
- 6th house = servants, service providers, guards.
- 6th lord's Graha Arudha = the tangible servant/protector who acts.
- Planets having argala on the 3rd from AL (Gemini) in her chart: L6 is among them → confirms possibility of a servant/bodyguard.
- However: "It is very tough to predict who exactly would kill her. You can justify it after the fact, but predicting it ahead of time is very difficult."
🌌 Planetary Aspects: Full, Three-Quarter, Half, and Quarter
Parasara gives all planets partial aspects in addition to their special full aspects:
| Aspect Distance | All Planets | Special Planets |
|---|---|---|
| 7th house | Full (100%) | — |
| 4th and 8th | 3/4 (75%) | Mars: Full (100%) |
| 6th and 9th | 1/2 (50%) | Jupiter: Full (100%) |
| 3rd and 10th | 1/4 (25%) | Saturn: Full (100%) |
Example: Mars in Aries → aspects Leo with 1/2 aspect (normal). Jupiter in Aries → aspects Leo with full aspect (special).
[!NOTE] Mars–Saturn in 4th/10th mutual position: Both have special full aspects on each other (Mars: 4th/8th full; Saturn: 3rd/10th full). However, their agendas are fundamentally opposed — Mars is red boxer (aggression, fight back), Saturn is blue boxer (patience, endure, let's suffer and overcome). When they are in mutual 4th/10th and both have full aspects, they must work together, and the resulting tension can create dangerous volatility.
🔷 Trikona, Kendra, Dusthana: Cooperation and Obstruction
flowchart LR
A["TRIKONA (5th/9th)\nLakshmi Sthana\nBlessings, automatic promotion\nPurva janma punya"] -->|"Planets in trines from each other\nbless each other's agendas automatically\n(no effort required)"| B["Easy cooperation"]
C["KENDRA (4th/7th/10th)\nVishnu Sthana\nWork, activity, society"] -->|"Planets in mutual kendras\nmust work together\n(effort required, but willing)"| D["Purposeful cooperation"]
E["DUSTHANA (6th/8th)\nShadashaka\nObstacle, opposition"] -->|"Planets in 6th/8th from each other\noppose each other's agenda\n(struggle, reluctant)"| F["Conflict"]
Trines from Any House = That House's Blessings
| House | Its Trines | Why These Are Blessings |
|---|---|---|
| 10th (karma) | 2nd + 6th | Resources (2nd) fuel karma; struggle (6th) drives karma forward |
| 11th (gains/desires) | 3rd + 7th | Initiative (3rd) + pursuit (7th) are prerequisites for fulfillment |
| 8th (hard work/sadhana) | 4th + 12th | Happiness (4th) enables tapas; detachment (12th) is necessary for tapas |
Root meaning of the 12th house: Letting go, detachment (vairagya). Not merely loss — the deeper meaning is willingly releasing attachment. This is why 4th + 8th + 12th together form the moksha trikona.
🌿 Purusharthas: The Four Goals of Life
| Purushartha | Houses | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Dharma | 1st, 5th, 9th | Righteous duty, purpose |
| Artha | 2nd, 6th, 10th | Resources, work, earning |
| Kama | 3rd, 7th, 11th | Desire, initiative, fulfillment |
| Moksha | 4th, 8th, 12th | Liberation, detachment, transcendence |
Kamatrikona (3–7–11) represents the three stages of desire:
- 3rd house — Initiative: "I want this. Let me try."
- 7th house — Pursuit: "I am chasing this desire."
- 11th house — Fulfillment: "I got what I wanted."
🌑 Eclipse Charts — Mundane Predictions
An eclipse chart is cast for the start time of the eclipse (not the peak) at the capital of the country being analyzed. Its influence lasts for approximately 3 months.
[!TIP] Solar vs. Lunar eclipse charts:
- Lunar New Year chart → general events of the year for the country
- Eclipse chart → events in the next 3 months following the eclipse
- Solar return chart → more useful for political power struggles
- Lunar return chart → more useful for mass suffering, public mood Use the eclipse chart that was closest in time before a significant event.
Key Houses to Examine in Eclipse Charts
| Objective | Focus |
|---|---|
| Natural disasters, mass death | 1st house, 8th house, A8 |
| Ruling party/incumbent president | 10th house + 10th lord |
| Opposition party/challenger | 3rd house + 3rd lord |
| Mass public mood | Moon, Lagna |
In any eclipse chart:
Sun and Moon are always afflicted by Rahu/Ketu. Therefore:
- Do NOT conclude "the ruler will lose" just because Sun is eclipsed in a solar eclipse — Sun is always eclipsed.
- Instead: identify which houses Sun and Moon own, and which houses they occupy, to determine what domains are afflicted.
Case 1: Pakistan Earthquake — October 8, 2005
Solar Eclipse: October 3, 2005 · 4:10 PM PST · Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Pakistan
| Position | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Lagna = Aquarius (Kumbha) | Frame of reference for Pakistan |
| 7th lord + 8th lord together in 8th house | Classic death combination — 7th cuts life, 8th holds it. Together = severe danger. |
| Ketu in 8th house | Sudden, explosive, unexpected event |
| Lagna = Bhu (earth) rashi trines | Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara are earth signs → earthquakes, landslides, earth-related destruction |
Event: Major earthquake struck Pakistan/Kashmir on October 8, 2005, five days after the eclipse — killing ~87,000 people.
Case 2: India Lunar Eclipse — October 17, 2005
Lunar Eclipse start: October 17, 2005 · 5:03:21 PM IST · New Delhi, India
| Position | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Moon in Lagna in Gandanta (29°53' Pisces) | Moon is at the very end of a Jala (water) sign about to enter Agni (fire) — extremely disturbed, irrational, explosive |
| Gandanta definition | Last 3°20' of Meena/Kataka/Vrischika (water) and first 3°20' of Mesha/Simha/Dhanus (fire) — danger zone. Innermost degree (last 1° and first 1°) is most dangerous. |
| Moon will change sign in 11 minutes | Deep Gandanta — planet is at the absolute fag end of Pisces |
| Rahu aspecting Moon | Eclipse of the Moon = eclipse of the nation's mind. Public mood: unstable, groundless, troubled. |
| Rahu within 3.5° of Lagna | Rahu is almost sitting on the Lagna itself — terrorist/Rahu-type problems directly affect the nation's identity |
| Lagna lord Jupiter in 8th house with 6th lord Sun and 7th lord Mercury | Lagna lord badly placed; 7th + 8th lord together in 8th house → again, the death combination repeats |
| 7th lord in 8th = death combination | If 7th lord is in 8th or 8th lord is in 7th, it shows death or death-like suffering |
Case 3: Indian Elections — May 2004
Lunar Eclipse: ~May 5, 2004 · just after midnight · New Delhi, India
| Position | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Moon in 10th house | Moon afflicted by Ketu + Gulika + Mandi |
| 10th house = ruling party (BJP/Vajpayee) | Extremely badly afflicted → ruling party suffers |
| 3rd house = opposition (Congress/Sonia Gandhi) | Not badly afflicted |
| Prediction: | Opposition wins — BJP routed |
Result: BJP lost; Congress won (Vajpayee stepped down). Eclipse confirmed.
Case 4: US Presidential Election — October 2004
Lunar Eclipse: October 27, 2004 · 8:14 PM EST · Washington, DC
| Position | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 10th house = Pisces (ruling party/Republicans/Bush) | Jupiter (10th lord) in quadrant, with Venus — good Raja Yoga. 10th house not afflicted. |
| 3rd house = opposition (Democrats/Kerry) | 3rd lord = Sun in nica (debilitated) in Libra |
| Sun conjunct Ketu at 3° distance | Ketu is strong (in friend's sign, Venus's Libra). Sun is weak (debilitated, in enemy's sign). Sun is totally beaten down. |
| Prediction: | Democrats routed across all elections (Senate, Congress, Presidential) |
Result: Bush won decisively. Republicans held Congress and Senate.
"I was going with Bush even when some people, including my guruji, were predicting Kerry. This eclipse chart was a strong reason."
🇺🇸 Bush 2004–2005 Annual Chart Analysis
Chart: Bush's annual Tithi Pravesha chart for 2004–2005.
2004 Annual Chart (Good Year)
| Arudha | Position | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A9 (fortune) | In a kendra with A4 | Fortune in a quadrant = results with effort. A4 (tangible comfort) conjoined = "Thank God, things went my way" relief and happiness |
| Lagna lord Mercury ↔ 5th lord Venus | Mutual aspect, Raja Yoga on this axis | Good Raja Yoga = strong authority during the year |
| A9 + A4 on Raja Yoga axis | Fortune and comfort are right on the ruler-axis | Very auspicious — lucky year, things go his way |
2005 Annual Chart (Difficult Year)
| Arudha | Position | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A9 (fortune) | With A8 (Mrityupada) | Fortune linked to sudden setbacks. Bad luck interfering with fortune. |
| Rahu in 8th house | 8th house weakened | Rahu in 8th = constant struggle; sudden bad events |
| A5 (popularity) | With Lagna + A11 | Popularity not entirely bad — decent following continues |
| A6 with A5 | Tug-of-war between following and opposition | Followers can become opponents; very border year for popularity |
| A5 with A6 | Same sign | Some followers switch sides; restless conservative base |
A5 (popularity) Dasha Periods during 2005:
| Dasha Period | A5 Lord Result |
|---|---|
| Aug–Sep (Venus dasha from A5) | Venus = 6th lord from A5 → popularity drops |
| Oct 20 – Dec 8 (Moon dasha from A5) | Moon = 8th lord from A5 → terrible for popularity |
| After Dec (Mars dasha) | Mars = 5th lord in 9th from A5 → tough talk/action boosts following |
Overall conclusion: popularity will not simply crash and stay down. A temporary dip (especially around Katrina — September 2005), then recovery around Christmas. "If Clinton were there with the same Katrina, same results may have been experienced — it's pure bad luck."
Homework assigned: Analyze Bush's 2006–2007 annual chart. Predict: (1) What he may do, (2) How his popularity will be, (3) How Republicans may do in 2006 Senate/Congress elections.
📊 Divisional Charts for Mass Suffering
| D-Chart | Use |
|---|---|
| D-1 (Rasi) | Physical reality — baseline for all analysis |
| D-6 (Shashthamsa) | Illness; country's enmities with other nations; litigation; war |

| D-30 (Trimshamsha) | Subconscious suffering, unease, restlessness. Countries: collective feeling of things going wrong. |
[!NOTE] D-13 to D-24 operate at the mental level (above physical). D-25 to D-36 operate at the subconscious level. D-37+ operate at the karmic/supraconscious level. Applying Arudha Padas in charts above D-24 is difficult and their exact meaning is not fully understood — use with caution.
Rudramsha (D-11) — India 2005
- 11th house has: 2nd lord Venus, 3rd lord Ketu, 3rd + 8th lord Mars — several Marakas together in Hara Sthana.
- Cancer = the sign = Jala Rashi → water-related mass deaths (floods, rains, flash floods).
- During Venus dasha → Venus gives Ketu's results (via planetary exchange order). Ketu = explosions, terrorism, smoke, ashes → confirms the bomb blasts.
Trimshamsha (D-30) — India 2005
- Venus + Moon in Lagna = subconscious suffering directly affecting the nation's identity.
- A4 (tangible comfort) + A8 (Mrityupada) in 12th house = secret/deep suffering. The unhappiness is profound and existential.
