🕉️ Class 81 — Argala Adhyaya: Parasara's Doctrine of Planetary Bolts
First class dedicated to reading Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS) directly. The chapter on Argala (Chapter 31 in Sampathna's edition) is explored shloka-by-shloka on the day before Guru Purnima. Key revelation: Argala is caused only by planets, not by houses per se, and Rahu/Ketu reverse the count for their own Argala/Badha.

🙏 Opening Prayers and Context
The class opens on the day before Guru Purnima (a Chaturdashi / Shiva day) in Satabishak nakshatra. The teacher performs:
- Ganapati Atharvasirsham (full recitation) — to ensure no vighnas in interpreting Parasara
- Gayatri mantra for Brihaspati (Om Vrishabham Charshaniinaam...)
- Veda mantra for Brihaspati for wealth (Om Brihaspate Ati Yad Duryo...)
[!IMPORTANT] This is the inaugural session of reading BPHS directly. The teacher states: "Parasara is the highest authority. Nobody else." All earlier teachings are to be treated as provisional until verified against Parasara's own text.
🌙 Nakshatra & Graha Sukta of the Day
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Nakshatra Sukta position | Satabishak |
| Deity of Satabishak | Varuna |
| Nava Graha Sukta position | Brihaspati (Jupiter) |
| Occasion | Day before Guru Purnima; Chaturdashi |
Satabishak Nakshatra Mantra (Varuna):
Om. Kshatrasya Raaja Varuno Dhiraaja. Nakshatraanaam Satabishak Vashishta. Tau Devedhyah Krinuto Dheerghamaayuh. Shatam Sahastraabyeshajaani Dhartaa. Yajnanno Raaja Varuna Upayaatu. Tannou Visve Abhisam Yantu Devaah. Tannou Nakshatram Satabishak Dushaanam. Dheerghamaayuh Pratiradbhyeshajaani.
🔑 Why Start with Argala Adhyaya
The teacher draws a parallel with Durga Saptasati:
- Kavacham — rishi is Brahma (protection)
- Argala — rishi is Vishnu (support / sustenance)
- Kilakam — rishi is Shiva (dissolution / pin)
He chose to invoke Vishnu's energy by beginning with Argala. Future classes will likely cover ending chapters of BPHS (doshas and remedial measures) before returning to the early chapters.
📖 Shloka-by-Shloka Translation
Shloka 1 — Maitreya's Question
"Bhagavan yargala prokta subhada bhavata adhuna. Tam aham srotum icchami talakshana phalam mune."
Maitreya asks Parasara: "O Lord, that Argala which gives great results (subhada) — I wish to hear about its characteristics and fruits, O sage."
Shloka 2 — Parasara Defines Argala
"Maitreya targala nama yaya bhava phalam drdham. Sthiram ksheta phalam tasyat sadhu na kachate maya."
- Argala is that by which the results of houses become drdha (solid, unshakeable — Hindi: pakka)
- Also the results of planets themselves become sthira (fixed)
- Parasara uses two strong words: drdha and sthira — emphasising rigidity
- He does NOT say good or bad; Maitreya implied subhada but Parasara is neutral here
Shloka 3 — Primary Argala Houses
"Chaturthedhane labhe grahe jneyatadargala. Tadvadakah kramarkheta vyoma rishpa trutiyagah."
| Argala House (from a reference point) | House Number |
|---|---|
| Dhana — wealth house | 2nd |
| Chaturtham — fourth | 4th |
| Labha — gains | 11th |
Key Parasara correction vs. prior teaching:
[!IMPORTANT] Argala is caused only by planets, not by empty houses. If the 2nd, 4th, or 11th house is vacant, there is NO Argala on that reference point. Houses alone do not cause Argala.
Badha (obstruction) houses — respectively (kramat):
| Argala House | Badha House |
|---|---|
| 4th | 10th (vyoma = sky/midheaven) |
| 2nd | 12th (rishpa) |
| 11th | 3rd (trutiya) |
Shloka 4 — Badha Qualification
"Nirbalā nyūnasankhyāvā bādhakā naiva sammatāḥ."
Badha planets are not accepted as obstructors if they are:
- Nirbala — devoid of strength (weak), OR
- Nyunasankhya — fewer in number than the Argala planets
[!NOTE] The Argala planets must be outnumbered or outstrengthened by the Badha planets for the obstruction to be effective. If 10 people want a project done and 2 try to stop it, the 2 are irrelevant.
Shloka 5 — Viparita Argala (Third-House Exception)
"Trutīye vyādhikāḥ pāpā yatra maitreya bādhakāḥ tatrāpi cārgalā jñeyā viparītā dvijottamā."
If many (vyadhikah) malefic planets occupy the 3rd house (which is normally a Badha sthana for the 11th house Argala), then instead of causing Badha, they flip and cause Viparita Argala — they become promoters rather than obstructors.
- Viparita = going from one extreme to the other (same as Viparita Raja Yoga concept)
- The mass of malefics in 3rd switches from opposing to supporting
Shlokas 6–7 — Fifth House Argala
"Panchamam ca argala sthanam navamam tadvirodhakrit."
| Argala House | Badha House |
|---|---|
| 5th | 9th |
The 5th house is also an Argala sthana. The 9th house obstructs it.
Shlokas 8–10 — Argala on Planets (Not Just Houses)
"Rashito grahadasyati vigne yad vividhar gala nirbadhaka sukhalada vythalacha sapadhaka."
- Argala applies to both houses AND planets (rashi and graha)
- Nirbadhaka (unobstructed) Argala = sukhalada (gives good results)
- Sapadhaka (with Badha) Argala = vythala (useless / gives no results)
[!NOTE] Parasara does NOT say auspicious/inauspicious at this point. He says works or does not work. Whether the result is pleasant depends on the house being aspected.
Shloka — Timing of Argala Results
"Yatra raso sthitah khetah tasya pakantaram yada tasmin kale phalam jneyam nirvisankam vijottama."
- The sign (rasi) in which the Argala-causing planet sits is the key
- When the Paka or Antardasha of that sign arrives (in Rashi Dasha / Chara Dasha), the Argala gives its results — without doubt
- This refers to Rashi Dashas (Chara Dasha, Narayana Dasha), NOT Vimshottari specifically
- Can be generalized to Vimshottari Antardasha as extension
Shloka — Argala Strength Scale (Quarter System)
"Argalam pratibandham cha katham katham angri chaturthayoho vipriyam grihayo syamitho vipra chintaye diti me matam."
The teacher's interpretation: consider Argala on a 4-point scale. Net Argala count (Argala planets minus Badha planets):
| Net Count | Result |
|---|---|
| 1 | Ignore (me matam — "in my opinion, disregard") |
| 2 | Consider (madhyama) |
| 3 | Consider — strong |
| 4+ | Consider — maximum |
[!TIP] When calculating, balance each pair: (4th-house planets) vs. (10th-house planets), (2nd-house planets) vs. (12th-house planets), (11th-house planets) vs. (3rd-house planets). Sum all net results.
Shloka 11 — Argala on Arudha Lagna, Lagna, and 10th House
"Pade lagne made vapi nirabhasargala yada tada jato 'ti viksato bahubhagya-yuto bhavet."
- Pada = Arudha Lagna (mentioned FIRST — most important)
- Lagna = ascendant
- Madhe = 10th house (Parasara uses mada to fit chandas = anushtup)
If any of these has nirabhasa Argala (genuine, unobstructed Argala):
- The person becomes ativikhyata (extremely famous)
- Bahubhagya yuta (possessing great fortune)
[!NOTE] Nirabhasa = genuine (not fake). Two interpretations: (1) unobstructed Argala, or (2) Argala by a planet whose agenda supports the house's agenda. Fake support = planet opposing the house's purpose while nominally being in the Argala sthana.
Shloka 12 — Benefic/Malefic Argala on Lagna
"Yasya paapaha subhovaapi graha sthithe subhaargale... lagnam praabalyaaya upakalpate."
If the planet causing the auspicious Argala (on Lagna, Arudha Lagna, 10th) also aspects Lagna, the strength is further increased (praabalya = increased power).
Key clarification: Subha Argala and Papa Argala do NOT refer to the inherent nature of the planet causing them. A malefic planet can cause a Subha Argala and a benefic planet can cause a Papa Argala — it depends entirely on which house the Argala is being given to.
Shloka — Second House Argala
"Sargale ca dhane vipra dhana dhanya samanvitah."
If the 2nd house has (unobstructed) Argala → dhana dhanya samanvita = well-endowed with wealth and resources.
Shloka 18 — Argala on Lagna, 5th, and 9th
"Lagna pancham bhagyesu sargaleshu dvijottama. Jatasya jayate raja bhagyavan naatra samshayah."
If all three — Lagna, 5th house, and 9th house — have Argala:
- The person becomes a king (raja)
- Bhagyavan (very fortunate)
- Na atra samshayah — no doubt about it
📊 Summary: Argala Rules from Parasara
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Argala houses | 2nd, 4th, 11th (primary); 5th (secondary) |
| Badha houses | 12th (for 2nd), 10th (for 4th), 3rd (for 11th), 9th (for 5th) |
| Argala agent | Planets ONLY (not empty houses) |
| Badha valid? | Only if Badha planets are strong AND more numerous than Argala planets |
| Viparita Argala | Many malefics in 3rd → flip to support instead of obstruct |
| Fruit | Results of house/planet become drdha (solid) |
| Timing | Rashi Dasha antardasha of the sign holding the Argala planet |
| Grade | 1 planet = kanishtha (ignore); 2 = madhyama; 3+ = uttama |
| Subha/Papa | Determined by the house receiving Argala, NOT the planet's inherent nature |
🌑 Rahu & Ketu: Reverse Argala Doctrine
"Tamo graha bhavata vyatyayajneyate dvija."
Tamo graha = Rahu and Ketu (shadow planets without inherent light). For these two:
- What are normally Argala sthanas (2nd, 4th, 11th) become their Badha sthanas
- What are normally Badha sthanas (12th, 10th, 3rd) become their Argala sthanas
Standard planet: Argala = 2nd | Badha = 12th
Rahu/Ketu: Argala = 12th | Badha = 2nd
Argala = 10th | Badha = 4th
Argala = 3rd | Badha = 11th
[!IMPORTANT] This is a major departure from earlier teaching where only Ketu-occupied signs had reversed counting for the whole sign. Parasara's rule: reversal applies only to the specific Argala or Badha caused by Rahu or Ketu — other planets in the same house are NOT reversed.

✨ Subha vs. Papa Argala
[!WARNING] Common misconception: "Benefic planet = Subha Argala; malefic planet = Papa Argala." Parasara contradicts this. A Saturn or Mars can give a Subha Argala; a Venus or Jupiter can give a Papa Argala.
Correct logic:
- Argala on Lagna, 5th, 9th, 10th, Arudha Lagna → Subha Argala (auspicious house results)
- Argala on 6th, 8th, 12th → Papa Argala (difficult house results are solidified)
Grading of results by functional nature of Argala planet:
| Planet's Functional Nature | Result Given |
|---|---|
| Functional benefic | Full / maximum results |
| Functional neutral | Full / maximum results |
| Functional malefic | Half / medium results |

Birth Data: George W. Bush Jr. (Lagna: Cancer)
Key Argalas Analysis
Argala on Lagna (Cancer)
| House | Planets | Type | Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd | Mars | Argala | +1 |
| — | Sun in virodha position | Badha | −1 |
| Net | — | Weak | ~0 |
→ No significant unobstructed Argala on Lagna
Argala on Arudha Lagna (A1, Scorpio — 6th house)
| House (from AL) | Planets | Type | Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11th from AL | Jupiter + Moon (Gajakesari!) | Argala | +2 |
| Badha sthanas | Empty | None | 0 |
| Net | — | Madhyama | 2 |
- Jupiter = 6th & 9th lord → effectively neutral
- Moon = Lagna lord → functional benefic
- Both give full results
- This is Gajakesari Argala (unobstructed Gajakesari yoga causing Argala on AL)
Argala on 10th House (Madha = Aries)
| Source | Planets | Functional Nature | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4th from 10th | Mercury, Venus, Saturn | Mel./Mel./Neutral | Argala |
| 5th from 10th | Mars | Benefic (Yogakaraka) | Argala |
| Badha houses | Empty | — | 0 |
| Net count | 4 planets | Uttama |
→ Strongest Argala in chart. Tenth house = karma. He will do something BIG.
[!NOTE] Saturn is also in Lagna → Parasara rule: planet causing Argala on an auspicious house AND aspecting/occupying Lagna = even greater strength. Saturn's antardasha → biggest karma period.
Argala on 9th House (Fortune) — Navamsa Chart
| Source | Planets | Functional Nature |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd from 9th (in Navamsa) | Mars, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn | 3 benefic/neutral + 1 malefic |
| Rahu (2nd from 9th) | Badha (Rahu reversal) | −1 |
| Net | 4 − 1 = 3 | Uttama |
→ Extremely fortunate from fortune standpoint.
Argala on A6 (Enmity Pada)
Six unobstructed Argala planets: Sun (4th from A6), Rahu (3rd from A6 — Argala for Rahu), Ketu (equivalent to 5th from A6), Mercury, Venus, Saturn. → He has powerful, relentless enemies throughout his life.
Dasha Correlations (Sapthamsa Dasha)
| Period | Event | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter MD / Jupiter AD (Nov 2000–Jan 2001) | Became US President | Jupiter has unobstructed Gajakesari Argala on AL |
| Saturn AD (~Mar 2003) | Iraq War — biggest karma of presidency | Saturn has 4-planet Argala on 10th AND is in Lagna |
| Rahu AD (Sep 2003 – Oct 2004) | Negative propaganda pre-election | Rahu causes Badha on fortune (9th house Navamsa) |
| Sun AD | Re-elected + continued enemies | Sun has fortune Argala (9th, Rashi) + A6 Argala |
[!TIP] Parasara's lesson from this example: Jupiter alone causing Argala on AL would give weak results (kanishtha). Moon + Jupiter together (2-planet Argala = madhyama) is what gave him the presidency. The gang of supporters matters.
