🌌 Opening Context
This class was taught with the request not to cover any critical new material (one student was attending a Rudraksha ceremony). PVR therefore focused on an example chart: Swami Jayendra Saraswati, the head of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetha who had recently been arrested on murder charges. The class examines whether astrological indicators support or contradict those charges.
[!NOTE] The birth data for Swami Jayendra Saraswati is in the default dataset of the JHora software.

🛡️ The Saint Test: 3rd and 6th from Arudha Lagna {#the-saint-test}
🎯 Core Principle
The single most important thumb rule for identifying a genuine saint vs. a materially-driven person is the 3rd and 6th houses from Arudha Lagna.
| House | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 3rd from AL | Parakrama — initiative, instinct to fight |
| 6th from AL | Destroying enemies; ruthlessness in finishing off opponents |
- Malefics (Saturn, Rahu, Mars) in 3rd/6th from AL → aggressive, ruthless; good for politicians/businesspeople; problematic for a saint
- Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) in 3rd/6th from AL → non-aggressive; walks away from conflict; ideal for a saint
[!IMPORTANT] This test uses Arudha Lagna, not the natal Lagna. Lagna shows the true inner nature; Arudha Lagna shows the manifested image in the world.
🔍 Chart Analysis
- Arudha Lagna is in Pisces
- 3rd from AL (Taurus): empty → look at the sign's nature: Taurus is owned by Venus (benefic), so it is a benefic sign. Also Jupiter aspects Taurus by sign aspect → additional benefic influence. Mars also aspects — the one blemish.
- 6th from AL (Leo): Venus is placed here — purely benefic. Jupiter and Mars both aspect Leo by sign aspect.
Verdict: Benefic influences dominate. Despite Mars's aspecting influence, this chart overwhelmingly points to a genuine saint.
3rd from AL (Taurus) — benefic sign, empty
Aspected by: Jupiter (benefic), Mars (malefic), Sun (considered benefic for dharma matters)
Score: 2 benefics : 1 malefic → benefic wins
6th from AL (Leo) — Venus occupies (strong benefic)
Aspected by: Jupiter (benefic), Mars (malefic)
Score: 2 benefics + 1 occupying benefic : 1 malefic → clear benefic dominance
[!NOTE] When a house is empty, look at the nature of the sign itself. A sign owned by a benefic is a benefic sign for this analysis.
⚠️ Important Clarification
This applies only to 3rd and 6th — not the 8th. The relevant Upachaya houses for fighting are 3, 6 (not 10 or 11 in this context).
🔮 Sashtiamsha and Dharma {#sashtiamsha-and-dharma}
The 9th Lord and Its Sashtiamsha
- Lagna for this chart is Capricorn (Kapika Lagna)
- 9th house = Virgo → 9th lord = Mercury
- Mercury's Sashtiamsha = Deva (gods/divine)
| Sashtiamsha | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Deva | Divine karma from past lives; very noble dharma |
| Rakshasa | Demonic karma; person follows adharmic path |
[!IMPORTANT] The Sashtiamsha of the 9th lord reveals what kind of Dharma is coming to the native from past-life karma. A Deva Sashtiamsha means the accumulated karma is divine and lofty.
Conclusion: Mercury in Deva Sashtiamsha means his Dharma in this life has a divine basis from many past lives. He was given the highest level of Dharma in this life as a result.
[!NOTE] PVR explains that Dharma is not universal — each soul receives a unique Dharma based on its level of spiritual evolution. A bullock-cart driver's full Dharma may be simply saying "Rama" three times a week at a temple; PVR's Dharma is teaching astrology. Neither is superior or inferior in absolute terms.
⏳ Moola Dasha: Past-Life Karma Manifesting {#moola-dasha}
Moola Dasha is the dasha that shows when the results of past-life karma manifest in this life.
JHora Software Note
- Navigate to: Dasha tab → 3rd sub-tab → pop-up menu → Moola Dasha
- Options: set the combo box to 12 years (not 0 years)
- The 12/0 controversy: if a planet is in its own sign (Moola Trikona), you count either 0 or 12 signs. PVR prefers 12 based on experience.
Mercury Moola Dasha Period
- With 12-year option: approximately 1967–1981
- Mercury is the 9th lord and occupies Deva Sashtiamsha
- During this 14-year period: he must have immersed in Vedic knowledge under his predecessor Swami Chandrasekharendra Saraswati (revered as an incarnation of Shiva)
During Mercury Moola Dasha, the results of past-life divine karma materialize — in his case, becoming the successor of the most respected Peetha in Hinduism and receiving profound Vedic transmission.
What Moola Dasha Is Not
| Dasha | Shows |
|---|---|
| Moola Dasha | Why something is happening (past-life karma being activated) |
| Atmakaraka Kendradhi Graha Dasha | How the soul discovers/evolves itself in this life |
🌀 Vimshottari Dasha: Lagna vs Moon {#vimshottari-dasha-lagna-vs-moon}
Which Reference to Use?
Rule: Count planets in Kendras (quadrants) from Moon and from Lagna. Whichever has more planets, that reference dominates.
- Planets in Kendras from Moon: 3
- Planets in Kendras from Lagna: 5
- → Lagna is stronger → Use Lagna Vimshottari Dasha
In JHora: Vimshottari Seed Strength Comparison Help menu shows these counts automatically.
Philosophical Difference: Moon vs Lagna vs Sun

A["External World"] -->|perceptions / reactions| B["🌕 Moon\n(Mind/Reaction)"]
B --> C["Interior Self"]
C -->|actions / intelligence applied| D["🏠 Lagna\n(Action/Existence)"]
C -->|soul experiences| E["☀️ Sun\n(Atma/Soul)"]
| Reference | Vimshottari Shows |
|---|---|
| Moon | How you feel and react to the world; mental experiences; attachments |
| Lagna | How you act in the world; application of intelligence; physical and intellectual output |
| Sun | What the soul experiences (rarely used; applicable only to highly evolved individuals; also used in Adhana Chakras) |
[!TIP] For individualistic people with strong Lagna (more planets in Kendras from Lagna), use Lagna Vimshottari for predictions. For emotionally-driven people, Moon Vimshottari gives better results.
Chandra Vimshottari for Swami JS (1989–2006)
- Mercury Mahadasha from Moon: 1989–2006
- Mercury is 6th lord (service), conjunct Ketu (Mokshakaraka), and 9th lord
- Reading: During this period his thoughts are totally focused on his Dharma; strong attachment (Moon = attachment) to his spiritual mission
☀️ Vimshottari from Sun: Adhana Chakras {#vimshottari-from-sun}
- Sun-based Vimshottari is used for Adhana Chakras (charts cast at the moment of conception)
- The 9-month gestation is compressed into dasha periods
- This tracks the soul's experiences during the prenatal period
- Generally not used for natal chart reading because most people have no access to their soul's inner experience
📐 Other Vimshottari Bases {#trisputa}
| Base | Shastra Basis |
|---|---|
| Moon's nakshatra | Primary; standard |
| Sun | For Adhana Chakras |
| Lagna | Valid classical usage |
| Shamatara, Adhanatara, Utpannatara | Special nakshatras from Moon |
| Mandi (Upagraha) | Longitude of Mandi |
| Trisputa | Found in Prasnamarga (South Indian Sanskrit classic) |
[!NOTE] Trisputa as a Vimshottari base is mentioned in Prasnamarga. PVR notes this opens the possibility of computing Vimshottari from various other sensitive points, but no clear guidelines exist in the Shastra for interpretation.
