🔔 Opening & Context

Parashara resumes Chapter 34 from verse 19 — the lagna-by-lagna list of functional benefics, malefics, yogakarakas, and Marakas. Maitreya had asked (verse 18): "For each rising sign, which planets are yogakarakas, which are auspicious, which are inauspicious?"

"Yathā prastham trayā viprā tathodāharaṇam bruve." — As you have asked, oh Brahmin, I will give examples.

♈ Aries Lagna (Verses 19–24)

Planet Assignments

Planet Houses Owned Classification Reason
Mars 1st + 8th Benefic Lagna lord = trikona + kendra; 8th ownership forgiven
Sun 5th Benefic Pure trikona lord
Jupiter 9th + 12th Benefic (with caveat) 9th is clear trikona; 12th is neutral but contextual
Saturn 10th + 11th Malefic 11th is trishadaya (clear malefic); 10th is neutral
Mercury 3rd + 6th Worst Malefic Owns both trishadaya houses
Venus 2nd + 7th Clear Maraka Owns both Maraka houses

Malefic Hierarchy for Aries (Most → Least Malefic)

Mercury (3rd+6th) > Saturn (10th+11th) > Venus (2nd+7th) [least malefic of the three]

[!IMPORTANT] Venus is declared Sākshat Nihanta — the direct killer (Maraka) — owning both Maraka houses (2nd and 7th). Mercury owns both trishadaya houses, making him the worst functional malefic.

Sun vs. Jupiter

  • Sun (5th lord only): Clear, unconditional benefic
  • Jupiter (9th + 12th): Benefic but contextual — 12th ownership means his beneficence is modified by associations (sahacharyam)

"Paratantriyena Jivasya Papa Karmapu Nischitam" — By the influence of association with malefics, Jupiter can become malefic.

Consequence: For Aries, the Saturn-Jupiter yoga (9th + 10th lord combination) is NOT a reliable Raja Yoga:

  • Saturn is a functional malefic
  • Jupiter's beneficence is unstable
  • One clear malefic + one uncertain benefic ≠ strong Raja Yoga

"Na shubham yoga matrena prabhavet shani jiva yaho." — Saturn and Jupiter together will not necessarily give auspicious results just by being in yoga.

Additional Malefics

"Mandādayopi hantāro bhaved yuḥ pāpīnograhāḥ" — Saturn, Mercury, et al., can become killers (Marakas) if associated with the 2nd or 7th house or their lords.

[!NOTE] Marakatva is a functional quality — a planet becomes a killer by association with Maraka houses/lords, not merely by inherent nature. For Aries, Mars being in the 2nd house does NOT make him a Maraka (he's the benefic Lagna lord). But Mercury in the 2nd house would be a strong Maraka.

♉ Taurus Lagna (Verses 25–28)

"Jīva Śhukrendavah pāpāḥ śhubhau śhani divākarau. Rāja-yogakaraḥ śhaurirbudhaḥ śhalpa-śhubhapradah."

Planet Assignments

Planet Houses Owned Classification Reason
Jupiter 8th + 11th Malefic 11th is trishadaya; 8th contextual — net malefic
Venus 1st + 6th Malefic Lagna lord, but Moolatrikona is 6th house (trishadaya) — weight given to 6th
Moon 3rd Worst Malefic Clear trishadaya lord
Saturn 9th + 10th Yogakaraka 9th (trikona) + 10th (kendra) = owns both → classic yogakaraka
Sun 4th Benefic Kendra lord — though kendra ownership is neutral for benefics, Parashara lists him as benefic here
Mercury 2nd + 5th Alpa-Shubha 5th = clear trikona; 2nd = contextual → moderately benefic

Malefic Hierarchy for Taurus

Moon (3rd) > Jupiter (8th+11th) > Venus (6th Moolatrikona)

The Mercury Caveat

[!NOTE] Mercury is alpa-shubaprada (limitedly auspicious) because:

  1. He owns the 5th (trikona) → benefic direction
  2. He owns the 2nd (contextual) → outcome depends on associations
  3. Mercury is the most susceptible planet to associations — any malefic influence will dampen his 5th-house beneficence

This teaches a key principle: the strength of a planet's house-based classification is not uniform across all planets. Mercury yields to whoever influences him more than most other planets.

Saturn as Yogakaraka: Saturn (9th + 10th) is the textbook yogakaraka for Taurus — owns both trikona and kendra. His is the clearest Raja Yoga potential.

♊ Gemini Lagna (Verses 29–31)

"Bhaumajivārunah pāpah eka eva kavishubhah."

Planet Assignments

Planet Houses Owned Classification Reason
Mars 6th + 11th Malefic Owns both trishadaya houses — worst malefic
Jupiter 7th + 10th Malefic Owns two kendra houses → strong kendrādhipatya dosha for a natural benefic
Sun 3rd Malefic Clear trishadaya lord
Venus 5th + 12th Only Benefic 5th = trikona; 12th = contextual (neutral house); net benefic
Saturn 8th + 9th Neutral 9th = trikona (good); 8th = contextual → balanced; neither mentioned as benefic nor malefic
Mercury 1st + 4th Neutral Lagna lord + kendra; Lagna is trikona+kendra; benefic for lagna

Saturn-Jupiter Yoga for Gemini

"Shanaishcharena jivasya yoga meshabhavo yatha" — Like in the case of Aries, the Saturn-Jupiter combination is not very powerful here either.

Both Saturn (neutral) and Jupiter (malefic) — a yoga between a neutral and malefic is not a strong Raja Yoga.

[!IMPORTANT] For Gemini lagna, Venus is the sole benefic. Only Venus can give truly auspicious results. This is contrary to popular simplified texts.

Why Jupiter Is Malefic for Gemini

Jupiter owns two kendra houses (7th + 10th). Kendrādhipatya dosha is at its highest for Jupiter (most benefic among planets). Owning two kendras compounds the dosha. He does not own any trikona, so there is no redemption through trikona lordship.

♋ Cancer Lagna (Verses 32–35)

"Bhargavendusu tau pāpau bhūsutejyendravashubhah. Pūrnayogakaraḥ sāksān mangalo mangalapradah."

Planet Assignments

Planet Houses Owned Classification Reason
Mercury 3rd + 12th Malefic 3rd is trishadaya; 12th is neutral but some contextual maleficence
Venus 4th + 11th Malefic 11th is trishadaya; 4th kendra ownership for benefic → net malefic
Mars 5th + 10th Yogakaraka (Purna) 5th (trikona) + 10th (kendra) = full yogakaraka
Moon 1st Benefic Lagna lord = trikona lord
Jupiter 6th + 9th Benefic Natural benefic owning 9th (strong trikona) offsets 6th ownership
Saturn 7th + 8th Neutral (Maraka by sahacharya) 7th = Maraka; 8th = contextual; results by association
Sun 2nd Contextual (Maraka potential) 2nd lord → result purely by sahacharyam

"Pūrna yogakaraḥ sāksān mangalo mangalapradah" — Mars is fully (purna) and clearly (sāksān) a yogakaraka.

Why Jupiter Is Benefic Despite Owning the 6th

Three reasons Parashara calls Jupiter a benefic for Cancer:

  1. Natural benefic quality — his struggle-giving is gentle (a kind coach vs. a harsh coach)
  2. Karaka for 9th house — naturally connected to dharma/fortune; will prioritize this over the 6th
  3. Friend of Moon (Lagna lord) — friendly toward the body/self, wants to help

[!NOTE] Contrast with Gemini lagna where Saturn owns 8th + 9th. Saturn (natural malefic) owns 9th but is neutral overall because Saturn's nature tends toward giving struggle even when owning blessings houses. Jupiter (natural benefic) owns 6th + 9th but is benefic because his natural inclination is to bless rather than afflict.

The principle: natural planet quality influences how strongly each house lordship expresses. A natural benefic owning a malefic house causes less harm; a natural malefic owning a trikona gives less blessing.

graph TD
    A[Natural Benefic + 6th lordship] --> B[6th = struggle, but delivered gently]
    C[Natural Malefic + 9th lordship] --> D[9th = blessing, but delivered grudgingly]
B --> E[Net: still benefic for natural benefic]
    D --> F[Net: still neutral/limited for natural malefic]

Sun as Maraka Candidate for Cancer

Sun owns the 2nd house only. No second house → pure sahacharyam determination. If Sun is with Mars or Moon (benefics), he becomes benefic. If with Mercury or Venus (malefics), he becomes malefic and can be a Maraka.

🌑 Rahu & Ketu in the Lagna-List Context

Question from student: Why doesn't Parashara include Rahu and Ketu in the lagna-by-lagna list?

Parashara's answer (from verse 16–18, Class 72): Rahu and Ketu do not use house ownership for functional benefic/malefic determination. Their Aquarius/Scorpio sign ownership acts like Saturn/Mars ownership for other purposes, but for yogakaraka classification:

  • See which house they occupy
  • See who they are with
  • They behave as the lord of the house they occupy + take the agenda of conjunct planets

[!NOTE] This was established in verse 18 and applies throughout the lagna list. For every lagna, Rahu/Ketu analysis is house + conjunction based, not fixed sign-lordship based.

🚗 Chart Analysis — Vehicular Accident (Satish)

Birth Data: May 9, 1983, 1:48 PM IST, Srikakulam, India (male) Event: Vehicular accident — October 12, 2010. Car totaled; only minor injuries. Natal Dasha at event: Ketu Mahadasha / Rahu Antardasha

D-16 (Shodashamsa) — Vehicular Happiness Chart

Lagna: Cancer (23°) Rahu/Ketu position: 3° Capricorn = 6th house (malefic house)

Applying the Rahu/Ketu rule from verse 18:

  1. House occupied = 6th (malefic) → Rahu/Ketu are malefic planets in D-16
  2. No conjunctions, but Saturn aspects with highest strength (81%)
  3. Saturn for Cancer lagna in D-16 = 7th + 8th lord → neutral planet
  4. Neutral planet's influence moderates but does not overcome the 6th house placement

Conclusion: Rahu (antardasha lord) is a functional malefic in D-16, placed in 6th (accident/struggle), and owns the 8th house → both 6th and 8th are houses of accidents and unexpected events.

flowchart TD
    A[Ketu MD / Rahu AD] --> B[D-16: Rahu in 6th house]
    B --> C[6th = struggle/obstacles; 8th = unexpected events]
    C --> D[Rahu = malefic + accident-prone dasha]
    D --> E[Car accident: October 12, 2010]

Annual Tithi Pravesh Chart (2010)

Year ruler: Sun | Antardasha at event: Venus

Venus for Aries lagna (annual chart) = clear Maraka (2nd + 7th lord)

Venus's associations in annual chart:

  • Mars (81%) and Jupiter (90.5%) aspecting Venus
  • Mars = 6th + 11th lord (malefic, dispositor of Rahu-Ketu)
  • Jupiter = in 6th house with Gulika

Venus as Maraka + influenced by 6th lord (Mars) and 8th lord associations → vehicle death (totaling) explained:

Factor Significance
Venus = 2nd + 7th lord Clear Maraka — can give "death" of car
Mars (6th lord) aspects Venus Accident link (6th = fighting, conflict)
Jupiter in 6th with Gulika Accident amplifier
A4 (Arudha of 4th) in Aquarius Venus is 12th lord from A4 → loss of vehicle

From Moon Lagna:

  • 4th house from Moon = Gemini (12°43')
  • Venus is in 8th house from this 4th house
  • Mars (6th lord from Moon-lagna) aspects Venus
  • 8th from 4th + 6th lord aspect = strong accident indicator for vehicle

[!TIP] To check vehicle-related events: see from (1) actual 4th house, (2) Arudha of 4th (A4), and (3) Moon as lagna. If multiple confirm, the event is solidly indicated.

Why the person was safe despite car being totaled:

  • Venus is also yogakaraka from A4 (4th + 9th lord of Aquarius) → gave a new car in the same period
  • No strong planetary indicators of physical harm to native in the natal or annual chart

D-30 (Trimsamsa) — Cross-Chart Technique

In the annual D-30: Venus is the Badhaka lord for Aquarius lagna, placed with Rahu-Ketu.

Cross-divisional synergy method:

  • Venus in D-16 (Shodashamsa): Capricorn
  • Venus in D-30 (Trimsamsa): Gemini
  • Gemini is the 5th house from Capricorn → not a direct malefic (6th or 8th) relationship

But also:

  • Venus in D-9 (Navamsa): Virgo = 9th house from Capricorn → blessing aspect exists

Interpretation: The same period gave both suffering (car accident) AND a blessing (new car). The D-30 and D-16 Venus relationship shows some suffering around vehicles; the D-9 and D-16 Venus relationship shows blessing around vehicles. Both manifested simultaneously.

[!TIP] Cross-divisional technique: Take a planet's sign in one divisional chart. Count where that planet falls in another divisional chart. The house relationship shows how the planet's agenda in Chart-A interacts with its agenda in Chart-B. Six-eight = conflict/obstacle; trine = synergy/blessing; quadrant = effort.

🔭 Digression: Surya Siddhanta vs. Drik Siddhanta

A student's accident chart prompted a comparison using Surya Siddhanta planetary positions (speaker is developing software support for this).

The Two Models

Feature Drik Siddhanta Surya Siddhanta
Based on Observable physical sky (NASA, modern astronomy) Classical formulas in Sanskrit shlokas
Mainstream adoption Last ~100 years post-Western influence Used by Varahmihira, Nadi writers, traditional Panchanga kartas
Planetary positions Match physical sky Can differ by 1–2° or more
Divisional charts Based on Drik positions Change significantly under Surya Siddhanta

Evidence For Surya Siddhanta

  1. Nadi Granthas — Some give extraordinarily precise readings (name, parents' names, specific life events). These use Surya Siddhanta positions.
  2. Varahmihira — Gave precise predictions; used Surya Siddhanta.
  3. Theoretical basis — Planets have a Sukshma Sharira (subtle body) distinct from the gross physical ball in the sky. Astrology works via subtle influence, not physical gravity.

"The physical Saturn you see in the sky is like a mirror image. He's just a reflection. The actual Saturn who's influencing you is somebody else." — Vimalananda (cited by teacher)

The Teacher's Position

[!NOTE] The teacher is exploring (not endorsing) Surya Siddhanta. His spiritual guru indicated there is "some worth in it." He notes: multiple Surya Siddhanta interpretations exist across different Panchanga traditions. The model being programmed comes from a North Indian monk's tradition (sun-worshippers, Gayatri lineage) who kept it secret for generations.

For this accident example under Surya Siddhanta:

  • Tithi Pravesh shifts by ~1.5 hours
  • D-16 Lagna changes to Pisces
  • Venus becomes 8th lord (instead of 2nd+7th)
  • Venus + Sun together in 12th → 6th lord + 8th lord in 12th = even clearer accident signature
