🔮 BPHS Ch.30 Opening — 2nd from Upada: Malefic Affliction → Loss of Spouse {#verse-opening}

The chapter opens mid-verse (continuing from the previous class). The discussion begins with the critical importance of the 2nd house from Upada Lagna (UL).

Two types of malefics can afflict:

  • Krura / natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu)
  • Papa / functional malefics (depends on the Lagna)
Affliction Type Effect on Upada
Only natural malefic in/aspecting 2nd from UL Average — some trouble
Only functional malefic in/aspecting 2nd from UL Average to bad
Both natural AND functional malefic Very bad — spouse may die; native may cause problems to spouse
Natural malefic + Neecha Amsa planet Loss of spouse — person "kills" spouse (passive sense: the horoscope causes wife's death)

[!IMPORTANT] The word Jatakod arahabhavya — "he becomes the killer of the wife" — is to be interpreted passively: his horoscope creates conditions that endanger or end the wife's life. It is not literal murder in most cases.

How to Judge the 2nd from Upada

Rather than relying only on the rule "see the 2nd lord," examine:

  1. Which Navamsa (amsha) is the 2nd house from Upada in?
  2. Who is associating with it in the Navamsa?
  3. Who aspects it in the Rasi chart?
  4. Who occupies that sign?

From these, identify rescuers (benefics protecting it) or destroyers (malefics afflicting it). Propitiate accordingly.

✨ Strong/Exalted Planet in 2nd from Upada → Multiple Beautiful Spouses {#verse-exalted}

Sanskrit: "Swocchamshe swoccha samstheva tungadrishti vashat tathaa bhavanti bahudaara rupalakshana samjutaa."

Condition: A planet associated with the 2nd house from Upada is:

  • Exalted in Navamsa (Swocchamshe), OR
  • Exalted in Rasi (Swoccha samstha), OR
  • Aspecting from an exaltation sign (Tungadrishti)

Result: Bahudaara rupalakshana samjutaa — many spouses (Bahudaara), all beautiful (Rupa) and of good character (Lakshana).

[!NOTE] In the modern context (monogamy as legal norm), "multiple spouses" should be read as exceptional marital luck and happiness — great blessings with respect to the spouse. The underlying meaning is: the person is very fortunate in marriage.

Upada or 2nd from Upada in Gemini → Multiple Spouses {#verse-gemini}

Sanskrit: "Upaarudhe dvitiye va mithune samsthite sati. Tatra jaata naro vipra bahudaara yuto bhaved."

Condition: Either the Upada itself or the 2nd house from Upada falls in Mithuna (Gemini).

Result: Multiple spouses.

Why Gemini?

  • Mithuna = "couple" — the very name implies pairing and multiplicity
  • Gemini is a Mercury sign; Mercury shows multiplicity, many
  • Just as Gemini in Saptamsa can indicate twins/triplets (for children), in Upada context it indicates multiple partners

⚠️ Lord of Upada in Own Sign → May Be Wifeless in Old Age {#verse-own-lord}

Sanskrit: "Swaraso samsatepyevam... uttaraish nirdharo bhavaty evana samseyah."

Condition: The lord of the sign containing Upada (or the 2nd from Upada) is in its own sign — either in that house or in another own sign.

Result: Generally positive (own sign = strong lord), BUT: the person may lose the spouse in old age — no doubt about it.

Important Nuance

This apparent contradiction is explained by context:

IF the lord is a benefic AND well-disposed (no malefic affliction):
  → May still have spouse in old age; "wifeless in old age" is less certain

IF the lord is a malefic OR ill-disposed (enemy of 7th lord, functional malefic):
  → Even though strong (in own sign), it will "protect" marriage as long as it can,
    but will eventually give loss of spouse — just delays it to old age

Interpretation (alternative positive spin):
  → Strong lord gives marital happiness in YOUTH; any issues appear only very LATE in life

[!TIP] This verse illustrates Parashara's approach: strength delays but doesn't always prevent negative results if the planet is inherently ill-disposed. Always check whether the lord is a natural/functional malefic before assuming the strong placement is entirely protective.

💫 Venus/Jupiter (Sthira Stri Karaka) in Own or Exalted Sign {#verse-venus-jup}

Sanskrit: "Uparudha patisvochye sthira stri karako athva sukulad dharalabhasya nijasthetu paryayat."

Condition:

  • Lord of Upada in exaltation sign, OR
  • Sthira Stri Karaka (permanent significator of spouse = Venus for male charts, Jupiter for female charts) in own sign or exaltation sign

Result:

  • If the lord/karaka is in exaltation: Spouse comes from a Sukula — a good, respected family
  • If the planet is in debilitation (Neecha): Spouse comes from an ordinary or disrespected family

[!NOTE] The word Nityakhe Darakarke (used earlier in the chapter) most likely refers to Jupiter or Venus (the sthira / fixed darakaraka), not the generic naisargika designation alone. Parashara uses the word Nitya (permanent) suggesting the permanent, non-moving karaka — consistent with Sthira Karaka.

💎 Benefic Connection to 2nd from Upada → Beautiful Spouse {#verse-benefic}

Sanskrit: "Uparudhe dwitiyeva subha sambandhato dwija. Jatatya sundari bharya bhavya roopagunanhita."

Condition: The 2nd house from Upada has a functional benefic (Subha) connection (aspect, conjunction, ownership).

Result:

  • Sundari = beautiful spouse
  • Bhavya Roopa = well-disposed, attractive appearance
  • Gunanhita = endowed with good character/qualities

[!NOTE] If the benefic is weak and there are stronger malefic influences on the same 2nd house from Upada, these positive results may not fully manifest. The key is whether the benefic is the dominant influence.

⚡ Saturn & Rahu in 2nd from Upada → Scandal / Loss of Spouse {#verse-saturn-rahu}

Sanskrit: "Uparudha dwitiye cha chariraahu sthitau yadi apavada striyastyaago nasho va jayate dwija."

Condition: Saturn (Charir = Saturn) AND Rahu both placed in the 2nd house from Upada.

Result:

  • Apavada = due to a scandal or unfair blame
  • Striyastyaago = giving up the wife / separation
  • Nasho = or death of wife

Loss of marriage happens through scandal or disgraceful circumstances.

[!WARNING] Seeing malefics (especially Saturn + Rahu) in the 2nd from Upada is a serious warning sign for the longevity and reputation of the marriage. Even if individual malefic presence might be survived, both together create a powerful negative combination.

🌿 Key Principle: Propitiating Afflictors vs Protectors of Upada {#principle}

flowchart TD
    U[2nd from Upada Lagna] --> Q{Who influences it?}
    Q --> A[Malefic planet\n(natural/functional)] --> R1[Propitiate the malefic\nReduce his harmful power]
    Q --> B[Benefic planet\n(natural/functional)] --> R2[Propitiate the benefic\nStrengthen his protection]
    Q --> C[Mixed influence] --> R3[Weigh which is dominant\nPropitiate the stronger one]
    R1 --> T[Mantra, charity, fasting\nfor the afflicting planet]
    R2 --> T2[Worship, gems\nfor the protecting planet]

[!TIP] Do not rely on the thumb rule of "always see the 2nd lord." Examine all influences — the planet owning the 2nd from Upada, planets aspecting it, the Navamsa amsha it occupies, and planets associating in that Navamsa. The dominant influence is what matters.

Cancer type Digestive system cancer
Gemstones worn Red coral (Mars) + Cat's eye (Ketu) on platinum ring

🔭 Rasi Chart Analysis & Rectification {#rectification}

Initial Lagna Candidate: Virgo (5:30 AM given)

  • 10th lord: Sun in 3rd house with Rahu → suggests surgeon/doctor, not salesman
  • Problem: A medical sales representative (Mercury/Moon type career) does not fit Sun-Rahu in 3rd

Rectified Lagna: Libra (5:26–5:28 AM, ~2 minutes earlier)

  • 10th lord: Moon in 4th house with Mercury
  • Moon + Mercury = Vaishya combination = salesman
  • Moon (9th lord) + Mercury (10th lord) = 9th-10th Raj Yoga in 4th house (Kendra)
  • Career in sales with good growth → confirmed
  • Debilitated Sun in Lagna = Sun is Basakal (afflicts Lagna) → Pitta-related health problems confirmed

Rectification boundaries:

  • Cannot add 20+ seconds (Navamsa Lagna changes)
  • Can subtract up to ~11 minutes (within 5-minute stated error)
  • Best time: 5:26–5:28 AM IST

[!NOTE] Lagna is in the first 3 degrees of Libra. This is sufficient for most analysis. Extremely precise techniques requiring half-degree Lagna accuracy were not used.

Pitta Constitution (from Chart)

  • Libra Lagna with debilitated Sun (Basakal) in Lagna
  • Debilitated Sun = ruiner of Lagna → Pitta-related problems
  • Ulcer = classic Pitta disease (excess digestive acid burns stomach lining)

💍 Dasha Analysis: Marriage (October 21, 1961) {#marriage-dasha}

Satabdi Dasha (from Vargottama Lagna)

Running: Mercury Mahadasha, Moon Antardasha

Planet Role for Marriage
Mercury Upada lord in Rasi; 9th lord in both Rasi and Navamsa; gives Dharma → Dharma-based union
Moon In Navamsa: 9th + 10th lords forming Dharma-Karma Raja Yoga in 12th house

Vimshottari Dasha

Running: Mercury Mahadasha, Saturn Antardasha

Planet Role for Marriage
Mercury 9th lord; Upada lord; capable giver of marriage
Saturn 7th lord from Lagna in Rasi chart; in 7th house from both Lagna AND Venus in Navamsa → strong 7th house connection

[!TIP] Both dasha systems (Satabdi and Vimshottari) agree on Mercury as the primary driver. Mercury = Upada lord + 9th lord → consistent with giving an honorable, Dharmic marriage.

💼 Career Confirmation: Medical Sales Representative {#career}

Dasamsa (D10) — Libra Lagna:

  • 10th lord Moon with Mercury (9th lord) in the 4th house (Kendra)
  • Moon + Mercury = Vaishya planets → sales profession
  • 9th + 10th lords = Raj Yoga in Kendra → career success and growth
  • Medical representation (connecting medicine with commerce) = Mercury (commerce) + Moon (medicine, nourishment)

[!NOTE] The given time of 5:30 AM places Lagna in Virgo (D10), which would show Sun+Rahu as 10th house planets — more fitting for a surgeon. The one-minute-earlier time placing Lagna in Libra gives Moon+Mercury in the 10th, which perfectly matches a medical sales career.

🏥 Health Crisis — March 1986 {#health-1986}

Vimshottari: Venus Mahadasha, Saturn Antardasha

Planet Why Problematic
Venus Maraka planet (7th lord) in Shastiamsha; a Maraka lord running Mahadasha gives health risks
Saturn Badhaka lord (for Libra Lagna = Badhaka is 9th = Gemini; Saturn owns no specific Badhaka, but...)

Saptamsa/Satabdi Dasha: Moon Mahadasha or Mars Mahadasha (Mars most likely)

Mars Analysis
Mars = 7th lord AND 2nd lord → double Maraka in Rasi
Mars in Badhaka sthana → difficult-to-diagnose diseases
Mars also = Lagna lord in Shastiamsha; 8th lord in 6th house → eighth lord in dusthana, not proper Viparita

[!WARNING] Mars in Badhaka sthana indicates health problems that are complex, hard to diagnose — not simple fevers but mysterious, persistent conditions. This fits the pattern of Mars giving the 1986 health crisis.

🔬 Cancer Diagnosis 2009 — Shastiamsha Deep Dive {#cancer-2009}

Shastiamsha (D60) — Key Configuration

  • Mars as Lagna lord in D60 (Aries-rising type, approximately)
  • Ketu: 8th lord in Lagna (extremely unfavorable — 8th lord directly afflicting Lagna)
  • Rahu: Badhaka lord
  • Rahu and Ketu both afflicting the Lagna = severe suffering indicators
  • 6th-8th-12th lord axis: Jupiter, Mercury, and their lords all on the 6th/12th axis

Dusthana Lords on the 6th-12th Axis:

Planet Role in D60 Significance
6th lord Associated with 12th axis Disease + hospitalization
8th lord (Ketu) In Lagna 8th = chronic/terminal conditions; in Lagna = afflicting the body itself
12th lord With 6th lord (Mercury) Disease leading to hospitalization
Badhaka lord (Rahu) Afflicting Lagna Hard-to-cure mysterious diseases
Jupiter Taking part in 6th-8th-12th axis Jupiter = growth planet; badly placed = uncontrolled growth → cancer

Vimshottari 2009: Mars Mahadasha, Jupiter Antardasha

  • Mars = Maraka + Badhaka in Badhaka sthana (from Vimshottari Lagna)
  • Jupiter = 6th lord in Rasi; in D60 → gives Mercury's results (6th lord with 12th lord in 12th house)

🎯 Why Rahu-Ketu in Shastiamsha Indicate Cancer {#cancer-indicator}

flowchart TD
    C[Cancer = Uncontrolled Growth] --> J[Jupiter: planet of growth\nBadly placed Jupiter = uncontrolled growth]
    C --> RK[Rahu & Ketu: planets of severe suffering\nAffflicting Lagna/6th/8th → serious disease]
    J --> CM[Jupiter on 6th-8th-12th axis in D60\nTakes part in disease combination]
    RK --> CM
    CM --> D[Cancer: combines uncontrolled growth\n+ severe/chronic suffering\n+ affliction of the body Lagna]

    Simple[Simple diseases: Rahu-Ketu merely in dusthanas] --> Low[Fever, cold, jaundice]
    Severe[Rahu-Ketu AFFLICTING Lagna or 6th house\n+ Jupiter in bad combination] --> High[Cancer, serious chronic disease]

[!IMPORTANT] Cancer requires the convergence of: (1) Rahu/Ketu afflicting Lagna, 6th, or 8th in D60; (2) Jupiter (growth planet) in a bad combination on the dusthana axis; (3) A Maraka or Badhaka Dasha running. All three conditions are present for Shastri Garu in 2009.

📅 Prognosis & Hope Timeline {#prognosis}

Current period (2009–2012): Critical — multiple difficult antardashas running

Antardasha Assessment
Saturn antardasha (current) Badhaka lord + aspects Badhaka sthana → bad
Mercury antardasha (upcoming) 6th lord in D60; 12th lord combination → bad
Ketu antardasha 8th lord in Lagna in D60 → worst of all

Hope window: ~Spring/early 2012

Dasha System Positive Antardasha Timing
Vimshottari Venus antardasha ~February 2012
Saptamsa Dasha Sun antardasha ~April 2012

Why these are better:

  • Venus in Vimshottari: 9th lord from Mars (current Mahadasha planet); not connected to 6th/8th/12th — brings some relief
  • Sun in Saptamsa: Lagna lord (5th lord) in 11th house from Saturn (current Mahadasha reference); Punyapada lord; no dusthana connections

[!WARNING] Despite the hope in spring 2012, Vimshottari shows a Maraka Mahadasha (Mars) actively running. There is genuine risk of life-threatening complications in the 2009–2012 window. The prognosis is serious and guarded.

💍 Gemstone Correction {#gemstones}

Currently worn (WRONG):

  • Red Coral (Mars stone)
  • Cat's Eye (Ketu stone)

Why These Are Harmful

Stone Planet Why to Remove
Red Coral Mars Mars = Maraka (2nd+7th lord in Libra Lagna); wearing it invites more Maraka energy
Cat's Eye Ketu Ketu = 8th lord in Lagna in D60; Ketu = Maraka lord in Sashtamsa; Viparita tara lord for his nakshatra

[!WARNING] Wearing the gemstone of a planet that is ill-disposed is like inviting an enemy into your home and giving him control over the household. If a planet is a malefic or Maraka, its gemstone amplifies its control over you. This is especially dangerous when that planet's Dasha is already running.

Correct Approach

Stone Planet Recommendation
Diamond Venus Safe to wear — 8th lord Venus in Rasi is Viparita potential; not a primary malefic; can be worn cautiously
Emerald Mercury Avoid — 12th lord in 12th house (D60); hospitalization link
Ruby Sun Avoid at any cost — Sun is debilitated in Lagna; afflicts Lagna
Red Coral Mars Remove immediately — Maraka
Cat's Eye Ketu Remove immediately — Maraka lord

Best recommendation: Diamond (if any gemstone needed). But propitiation over gemstones is the wiser path.

🙏 Spiritual Remedy: Hanuman {#remedy}

Why Hanuman:

  • Mars's Mahadasha is running (Vimshottari) → Hanuman is the deity of Mars
  • In Shastiamsha: Mars is the Lagna lord → propitiating Mars through Hanuman protects the physical constitution
  • Saturn is also a troublesome planet → Hanuman is also the deity of Saturn
  • One remedy covers both problematic planets

Recommended practice:

  • Chant Hanuman Chalisa (40 verses of Tulsidas)
  • Any Hanuman stotra or Hanuman mantra
  • Regular, sincere propitiation of Lord Hanuman

[!TIP] When a planet is a Maraka or Badhaka and its Dasha is running, do not wear its gemstone — propitiate it instead. The propitiation reduces the negative expression of the planet's energy; wearing the stone amplifies it.
