🙏 Opening — Chapter 21: Tenth House

Hare Ramakrishna (×3)

Chapter: BPHS Ch. 21 (Santanam edition)Karma Bhava Phala Adhyaya — Effects of the Tenth House.

"Karma bhava phalam chatha kathayamithavaghratha. Shrunu Maitreya thathvena brahma gargaadhibhashitham."

"I shall now tell you the results of the tenth house. Listen carefully, O Maitreya. In essence and spirit, this is what was earlier spoken by Brahma and by the great Rishi Garga."

Context: Ninth house completed in Classes 18–19. Eleventh and twelfth houses expected to be faster. Core career analysis via BPHS + Dasamsa examples.

📖 BPHS Tenth House Verses 1–13

Verse 1 — Strong 10th Lord in Exaltation/Own Sign/Own Amsa

"Sabale karma bhavese swoche swanse swarasige jatasthatha sukhaye nadhyo yasasvi shubha karma krut."

Combination: 10th lord (Karmesa) is strong — in exaltation sign, own amsa (Navamsa or Dasamsa), or own sign.

Results:

  • Native is blessed with paternal happiness (thatha sukha = father's comfort and blessings)
  • Famous (yasasvi)
  • Performs good deeds and karmas (shubha karma krut)

[!TIP] The three strengths for the 10th lord: swocha (exaltation), swamsa (own amsa in any divisional), swarasi (own sign). Any of these gives excellent career. This is the foundational positive principle of the chapter.

Verse 2 — Weak 10th Lord + Rahu in Kendra/Trikona

"Karmadhipo balonaschet. Karma vaikalyamadicheit. Saimhihi kendra trikonastho jyotishtomadiyaagakrut."

Combination (in two parts):

Part Condition Result
A 10th lord weak (balona) Person's work is handicapped — full of obstacles, underdeveloped, small-scale karma
B (Modifier) Additionally, Rahu (Saimhihi, son of Simhika) is in a kendra or trikona Person performs Jyotishoma and other elaborate Vedic yagnas (jyotishtomadiyaagakrut)

[!IMPORTANT] Part B modifies and cancels Part A. Even though the 10th lord is weak, if Rahu is strongly placed in kendra/trikona, the person will undertake large-scale Vedic ritualistic karmas — elaborate homams, yagas, and yagnas. These are not personal rituals but big public rituals requiring external purity and done for the benefit of large groups.

The second sentence acts as a "however" clause: However, if Rahu is in kendra/trikona, not only is the handicap canceled — excellent results manifest.

Verse 3 — 10th Lord with Functional Benefics in Good House

"Karmesha subhasam yukte subhastana gate tathā. Rajadvāre ca vānijye sadā lābhonyathānyathā."

Combination: 10th lord conjoined by functional benefics (subha); placed in a benefic house (e.g., 5th, 9th, not 6th/8th/12th).

Results:

  • Patronized in royal courts (Rajadvāre) — influential with authority figures
  • Success in commerce and business (vānijye)
  • Always making profits one way or another (sadā lābhonyathānyathā)

[!NOTE] This is a broadly auspicious combination. The specific expression (royal service vs. business) depends on which planets are involved and what houses they rule. The core meaning: 10th lord in a good house with good planets = career success and recognition.

Verse 4 — Functional Malefics in 10th and 11th Houses

"Daśame pāpa saṃyukte lābhe pāpa samanvite duṣkṛtiṃ labhate marcah svajanānāṃ vidūṣakaḥ."

Combination: Functional malefics afflicting both 10th house AND 11th house.

Results:

  • Person commits bad deeds, evil karmas (duṣkṛtim)
  • Brings shame to his own family/people — makes his own people look bad (svajanānāṃ vidūṣakaḥ)

Why 11th matters for 10th:

  • 11th house has argala (influence) on the 10th
  • 11th is 2nd from 10th = "family of the karma" — how the person's work is received by his own people
  • Malefics there = family is disappointed or shamed by the person's actions

Verse 5 — 10th Lord in 8th + Rahu

"Karmese nāśarāśisthe rāhuṇā saṃyute tathā. Janadveṣī mahāmūrkho duṣkṛtiṃ labhate naraḥ."

Combination: 10th lord in the 8th house (Nasharashi = house of destruction) + with Rahu.

Results:

  • Person hates people (janadveṣī) — finds fault with everyone; antisocial temperament
  • Great fool (mahāmūrkha)
  • Performs evil deeds

[!WARNING] The 10th house also governs social interaction and movement in society (it has argala on the 7th house of relationships — 10th is the 4th/directional-force house from 7th). Tenth lord in 8th = karma-house lord in destruction — the person's social engagement is corrupted. Rahu amplifies antisocial and confused behavior.

Verse 6 — 10th Lord in 7th + Natural Malefics + 7th Lord Afflicted

"Karmesha jyunarasisthe manda bhomasamanvite. Juneshe papasamyukte. Shishnodara parayanah."

Combination:

  • 10th lord in 7th house
  • Associated with Saturn (Manda) or Mars (Bhouma) — natural malefics
  • 7th lord also with functional malefics

Results:

  • Person is selfish and driven by desires (shishnodara parayanah — literally: motivated by stomach and sexual pleasure; idiom for extreme self-interest)

[!NOTE] The 7th house = house of desire (Kama). 10th lord going there means karma is driven by desire. Natural malefics (Saturn/Mars) make that desire forceful and self-serving rather than noble. 7th lord being afflicted by functional malefics = attitude towards relationships is also bad.

The teacher clarifies: 10th lord in 7th alone is not necessarily bad. A person driven by strong desire to establish Dharma in the world is also "karmas driven by desire." Only with Saturn/Mars (natural malefics) does the desire become self-serving and exploitative.

Verse 7 — 10th Lord Exalted + Jupiter + 9th Lord in 10th

"Tungarasim samasritya karmeshe guru samyute. Bhagyese karma rasisthe manaiswarya pratapavan."

Combination:

  • 10th lord in exaltation sign, with Jupiter
  • 9th lord placed in the 10th house

Results: Native is extremely honored, respected, and wealthy (manaiswarya); brave (pratapavan); performs excellent and auspicious karmas.

[!IMPORTANT] This is essentially a Dharma-Karma Yoga (even if not formally called so here):

  • 9th lord in 10th = Dharma meets Karma
  • 10th lord exalted + Jupiter = Karma strengthened by spiritual blessing
  • Jupiter in 9th = both planets exchange/reinforce each other's houses

"Being in exaltation is kind of like being in the 9th house, because exaltation shows Purva Punya carried by the planet, and 9th is the house of Dharma and Punya. So 10th lord exalted with Jupiter = strong link between 9th and 10th."

Verse 8 — 10th and 11th Lords in Exchange or Mutual Kendras

(From teacher's reading:) If the 11th lord is in the 10th house or the 10th lord is in the 11th house, or those two are in mutual quadrants (kendra) from each other.

Results: Comfortable, smooth, and happy life (sukhajīvana).

Logic:

  • 10th and 11th are the last two Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11)
  • Together with 9th: "9th, 10th, 11th are the three most crucial houses for a person's success. In Ashtakavarga, if 9, 10, 11 together have high scores, the person is lucky."
  • When karma (10th) supports gains (11th) and gains feed back into karma: virtuous cycle — more work → more gain → more work

[!TIP] If 10th and 11th lords have a bad relationship (e.g., inimical signs, mutual 6-8): Person may do good karma but no fruits; or get gains but can't reinvest. The cycle is broken. This verse shows the positive case.

Verse 9 — Strong 10th Lord + Jupiter in Pisces

(From teacher's reading:) 10th lord is strong; Jupiter is in Pisces (Meena) in own sign.

Results: Native obtains clothes, ornaments, and various comforts (vastrābharaṇasoukhyādi) — no doubt.

Why Pisces specifically (not Sagittarius)?

Jupiter in Pisces Jupiter in Sagittarius
Like a Brahmin at home — relaxed, doing personal rituals, happy, all needs met Like a Brahmin in the king's court — giving judgments, active, duty-bound (Rajpurohit)
Connected to 4th house comforts via Venus exaltation More Kshatriya-like energy: active, directive
Venus is exalted in Pisces → material comforts and luxury flow naturally Less direct connection to Venus's domain

Why Pisces → clothes and ornaments?

  • 4th house = physical comforts (clothes, ornaments, home, vehicles)
  • 10th house = 7th from 4th = desire-force (Kama) from 4th house
  • Pisces = 12th of the natural zodiac = house of spending/expenses
  • Venus (karaka of luxury) is exalted in Pisces → Pisces strong with Jupiter shows spending on Venusian luxuries
  • Strong 10th lord = overall status and fortune; Pisces Jupiter = the spending pattern is on comforts

[!NOTE] A teacher's student example (Narayan Iyer): Has exalted Venus in Pisces aspected by Jupiter in Scorpio, with exalted Moon and strong Lagna lord. He buys expensive clothes, never uses them, leaves them behind saying "give to Salvation Army." High acquisition of luxury without attachment — 12th house quality (spending) with Venusian objects, but no clinging.

Verse 10 — Sun + Mars + Saturn + Rahu in 11th House

"Labha sthana gate surye rahu bhauma samanvite. Ravi putrena samyukte karma chhetta bhavennarah."

Combination: Sun, Mars, Saturn, and Rahu together in the 11th house (Labha sthana).

Results: Karma Chhetta — the person who cuts off his work; fails to complete; gets no fruits. All efforts → no gains.

[!WARNING] This is a rare and specific combination (probability: 1 in 12 × chance of all four together). The 11th house represents fructification of desires and gains. When hammered by malefics (especially the combination Sun + Mars + Saturn + Rahu), the gains never materialize. The person may start big projects, raise resources, but at the moment of harvest — the result collapses. "He plays great cricket but gives a full toss on the last ball and loses the match."

Verse 11 — Jupiter + Venus in Pisces + Exalted Moon + Strong Lagna Lord

"Meene jive bhru jujute. Lagneshe bala samyute. Swoccha rashi gate chandre. Samya jnanarthavan bhavet."

Combination:

  • Jupiter and Venus both in Pisces
  • Lagna lord is strong
  • Moon in exaltation (Taurus = swoccha)

Results: Person is jnanarthavanwealthy (artha) and highly learned/knowledgeable (jnana); famous and recognized.

[!TIP] Jupiter + Venus in Pisces = both spiritual (Jupiter = Guru) and material (Venus = wealth, beauty, luxury) are maximized. Venus is exalted there; Jupiter is in own sign. With exalted Moon (stable, nurturing mind) and strong Lagna lord = the person is both scholarly and materially successful. This is one of the rarer combinations indicating a truly blessed person.

Verse 12 — 10th Lord in 11th + 11th Lord in Lagna + Venus in 10th

"Kar mese labhra rasishte labhese lagna samsthite. Karma rasi sthite shukre ratnavansanaro bhavet."

Combination:

  • 10th lord in 11th house
  • 11th lord in Lagna
  • Venus in the 10th house

Results: Person possesses lots of gems and jewelry (ratna) — rubies, emeralds, etc.

Full Arudha logic:

Arudha Location Meaning
A10 (10th lord in 11th) A10 = 12th house (counting 11th from 10th) Tangible career accomplishments → person spends what he earns
A11 (11th lord in Lagna) A11 = 3rd house (counting Lagna from 11th) Tangible gains → used to spend on 4th house (3rd is expenses house for 4th house matters)
A10 and A11 Mutual quadrants (12th and 3rd from Lagna) Auspicious link between career and gains
  • Venus in 10th = aspects 4th house (his 7th); 4th = house of luxury items (clothes, ornaments, property)
  • 10th = house of desire (Kama) from 4th → Venus = Karaka for luxury in 4th's desire-house
  • Combined: person gains wealth from work, spends on luxuries; A11 in 3rd = tangible gains go toward spending on comforts

Verse 13 (incomplete — class ends)

Session ends after verse 12/13. Teacher says: "We'll stop here, do an example. Next week we start from verse 14."

A student's anonymous chart is discussed off-record at the student's request.

🧘 Philosophical Digressions

Rahu — Spiritual vs Material Planet

[!IMPORTANT] Rahu is not purely materialistic. He is a planet of extremes — can make someone a great criminal or a great saint.

Aspect Rahu Ketu
Action Pursues spiritual knowledge; ritualistic effort; pilgrimages; fire rituals Understands/embodies spiritual knowledge; gives detachment without effort
Expression Uses the material plane to progress spiritually (rituals, homams, yagas, pilgrimages) Gives the actual spiritual understanding and detachment
Famous dicta "Rahu in 10th = pilgrimages; visiting many temples" Ketu = Moksha Karaka; inner liberation
Together Rahu = drive toward detachment; Ketu = attainment of detachment They work as a team — Rahu provides effort, Ketu provides result

Bottom line: Rahu in kendra/trikona is important for Vedic ritual mastery, large-scale public religious work, and pilgrimage. He is not merely a planet of maya.

Jupiter in Pisces vs. Sagittarius

Jupiter in Pisces (Meena) Jupiter in Sagittarius (Dhanu)
Brahmin at home — peaceful, resourced, performing personal rituals Rajpurohit — in king's court, giving judgments, active in the world
More Sattvic, less outward More Rajasic, more action-oriented
Venus is exalted here → comforts flow naturally Less directly connected to Venus's luxury domain
Spending quality (12th natural zodiac sign) Dharmic action quality

Both are good placements for Jupiter, but for material comforts, luxury, and personal peace, Pisces is preferred over Sagittarius.

Pisces (Meena) and Venus Exaltation

Meena (Pisces) is the natural 12th house of the zodiac = house of expenses and moksha. Venus is exalted in Pisces. Therefore:

  • Pisces strong with benefics → generous spending on Venusian comforts (luxury, clothes, ornaments, arts)
  • This spending does not necessarily imply attachment — it is 12th house energy, which flows away
  • Example: a person with exalted Venus in Pisces may accumulate expensive items effortlessly and also let them go easily (no hoarding, no attachment)

Why 11th house matters for 10th:

  1. 11th has argala on 10th (11th = 2nd from 10th = dhana argala)
  2. 11th is the 2nd from 10th = "family of the karma" = how the family and social circle receive the person's work
  3. For someone's karma to fully fructify (give gains), the 11th must cooperate with the 10th

The Upachaya group (3, 6, 10, 11):

"The last two Upachayas — 10th and 11th — are very important for success. Including 9th, you get the three crucial houses: 9, 10, 11. In Ashtakavarga, if 9, 10, 11 together have high scores, the person is considered lucky."
