🪔 Opening Discussion — Karma, Gifts & Homakundams

The Nature of Karma

The teacher offers homakundams (fire-altar vessels, ~8.5 × 8.5 inches) as gifts — no cost, no commitment.

"If you give a homakundam to somebody, it's very unlikely it will be misused — it's a very good gift to give."

A deeper teaching on karma follows:

  • Every action carries uncertain karma. Even an eye donation could generate bad karma if the recipient uses the gift for harm.
  • Chaturgupta keeps accounts of all karmas for every being — only a great yogi can perceive their own karma clearly.
  • The only solution is to give up Kartritva Bhāva — the sense of "I am the doer." Offer all action to a Devata. If you truly feel it, no karma accrues.

"Just give it up to some devata. Think that you don't exist. Just it is Mahālakṣmī everywhere. She's doing everything. If you really believe it hundred percent to the core, then you don't get any karma."

On Arpaṇam (Surrender) Formulas

Formula Tradition
Sarvaṁ Śrī Kṛṣṇārpaṇamastu Vaishnava (most common)
Brahman Arpanamastu Nirguṇa / Advaita emphasis
Sarvam Śiva Arpanamastu Shaiva
Allah Arpanamastu Any sincere devotee can use their highest

"What really matters is not whether you are saying Krishna or Shiva. What matters is — do you really mean it?"

On Receiving a Mantra from a Guru

Learning a mantra from a guru who has already done millions of repetitions gives a positive starting balance — like inheriting a funded bank account rather than starting from zero.

📖 BPHS Chapter 9 — Parental Affliction Combinations (Verses 31–45)

[!NOTE] All verses below are natal combinations from the birth chart. Where Parāśara says "will die," the teacher consistently advises: judge by bala-bala (planetary strength/weakness) — actual death vs. suffering, separation, or estrangement.

♄ Verse 31 — Jupiter-Saturn-Rahu Danger to Mother

Sanskrit: Lagnasthe ca gurou sourou dhane rahau trutiyage. Iti cen janmakāle asya mātā tasya na jīvati.

Planet Position
♃ Jupiter Lagna (1st house)
♄ Saturn 2nd house
🐉 Rahu 3rd house

Effect: Mother does not survive (danger at birth).

Mechanism: Saturn and Rahu both aspect the 4th house (house of mother) — Rahu by dṛiṣṭi, Saturn by 3rd aspect. Jupiter also gives a partial aspect.

Probability: 1/12 × 1/12 × 1/12 = 1 in 1,728 — a rare combination. If you encounter it, verify against actual records.

☽ Verse 32 — Malefics in Trines from Waning Moon

Combination: Malefics in trikonas from a waning Moon, with no benefics present.

Effect: Mother gives up / is separated from the child. Two interpretations:

  1. Mother gives the child up for adoption (to protect herself).
  2. Separation within six months of birth.

[!TIP] Adoption is also a valid reading of "mother gives up the child." By relinquishing the child, the mother may avert danger to herself.

♂ Verse 33 — Mars-Saturn in Amsha: Two Mothers

Combination:

  • Manda (Saturn) and Ara (Mars) occupy the same amsha (Navāṁśa or Dvādaśāṁśa — likely Navamsha)
  • They are in kendras (quadrants) from Moon in the Rāśi chart

Effect: Dvimātṛbhyaṁ na jīvati — the child will have two mothers, and longevity remains precarious.

Interpretive note: "Two mothers" can mean adoption. The teacher's reading:

  • Either Mars and Saturn are in the same navamsha sign, OR
  • They are in mutual quadrants AND in quadrants from Moon — this conjunction/quadrant applies in the amsha chart, not necessarily the Rāśi.

♄ Verse 34 — Saturn-Mars-Moon: Danger to Father

Sanskrit: Lagnē mandō madē bhaumāḥ śaṣṭha sthānē ca candramāḥ. Iti cē janmakālē syād pitā tasya na jīvati.

Planet Position
♄ Saturn Lagna
♂ Mars 7th house (mada)
☽ Moon 6th house

Effect: Father does not survive at birth.

♃ Verse 35 — Jupiter in Lagna, Malefics in 2nd: Father Dies at Marriage

Sanskrit: Lagnē jīvo dhanē manda ravi bhauma budhāś tathā. Vivāha samaye tasya bālasya mriyatē pitā.

Planet Position
♃ Jupiter Lagna
♄ Saturn + ☀️ Sun + ♂ Mars + ☿ Mercury 2nd house (several or all)

Effect: Father dies not at birth but at the time of the child's marriage.

☀️ Verse 36 — Sun Afflicted by Malefics: Father's Troubles

Sanskrit: Sūryaḥ pāpēna saṃyukto hyathavā pāpamadhyagaḥ. Sūryāt saptamagaḥ pāpaḥ tadā pitṛvadho bhavēt.

Three sub-conditions (any one is sufficient):

1. Sun conjunct malefics
2. Sun hemmed by malefics (Pāpakartari on Sun)
3. Malefic in the 7th from Sun

Effect: Father's destruction (pitṛvadha).

[!IMPORTANT] This is a common combination — do not predict father's death outright. Likely outcomes: estrangement from father, father living away, or poor relations with father. "With a pinch of salt."

Live example: Person with Aries Lagna, Sun + Saturn + Mercury in Lagna. Mercury is functionally malefic (with Sun and Saturn). Father was a sailor, absent most of the time. The native grew up disliking the father — partial result.

Key rule: If benefics are also present, they alleviate the affliction.

♂ Verse 37 — Sun-7th, Mars-10th, Rahu-12th: Father's Hard Life

Sanskrit: Saptame bhavane sūryaḥ karmastho bhūminandanaḥ. Rāhurvyayē ca yasyaiva pitā kashtēna jīvati.

Planet Position
☀️ Sun 7th house
♂ Mars 10th house
🐉 Rahu 12th house

Effect: Father lives with great difficulty (struggle, hard labor, career problems).

Reasoning using 9th-from-Sun as father's Lagna:

  • Mars falls in 8th from father's Lagna → hard work, struggle
  • Rahu falls in 10th from father's Lagna → career issues

Listener's chart confirmation: Student's father lost job and property when the student was born. Mars was in the 5th (not 4th/10th), so partial result — Rahu in the 10th from father's Lagna still showed career disruption; Mars in 3rd showed loss of real estate but also fighting spirit (father won the legal case).

♂ Verse 38 — Mars in 10th in Enemy Sign: Father's Early Death

Combination: Mars in 10th house in an inimical sign (śatru kṣetra).

Effect: Father dies very soon — "no doubt" per Parāśara.

Mechanism: Taking 9th house as father's Lagna, Mars falls in the 2nd (Māraka Sthāna) from it. Malefic in an inimical sign is more inclined to kill.

Probability: ~1/12 × (2/5 compound enemy signs) ≈ 1 in 30–40 charts — not rare. Apply with caution.

Santhanam's note: Mars in 10th in Gemini or Virgo (Mercury's signs, sole enemy of Mars) → father's early death. Teacher's view: use compound (sama-śatru / adhi-śatru) relationships, not only permanent enmity.

☽ Verse 39 — Moon-6th, Saturn-Lagna, Mars-7th: Father's Death

Sanskrit: Ripusthane yada chandrolagnasthane sanaischarah kujascha sapthame sthane pitarasya na jivatī.

Planet Position
☽ Moon 6th house (ripusthāna)
♄ Saturn Lagna
♂ Mars 7th house

Effect: Father does not survive — interpreted as father dying very soon after the child's birth (within a year).

☀️ Verse 40 — Sun in Mars-Amsha Aspected by Saturn: Pre-birth Father Separation

Combination:

  • Sun in an amsha owned by Mars (Aries or Scorpio Navamsha / Dvadashamsha)
  • Saturn aspects Sun in the amsha chart

Effect: Prāgjanmano nivruttisyān mṛityurvāpi śiśoḥ pituḥ — Father had already died or departed before the child's birth.

Application note: A good case study would be military families with children born posthumously, or Daniel Pearl's child (born after his death in Pakistan — mentioned by a student).

⚠️ Verse 41 — Malefics in 4th/10th/12th: Wanderer

Sanskrit: Chaturthe dashame papau dwadase cha yadaa sthitau pitaram mataram hatva deshad desantaram vrajet.

Combination: Malefics in all three of the 4th, 10th, and 12th houses (at least one in each).

Effect: The child will cause death of father and mother (directly or indirectly — the verse means they will be the cause, not literal killing) and will become a wanderer, moving from country to country.

[!NOTE] Pitaraṁ mātaraṁ hatvā = "having killed father and mother" — this is idiomatic in Sanskrit; it means the native becomes the cause of their death, not a murderer.

🐉 Verse 42 — Rahu-Jupiter in Enemy Sign: 23rd Year Fatal for Father

Sanskrit: Rahu jivo ripukshetre lagne vatha chathurthake thrayo vinshathi ne varshe puthra sthatham napashyati.

Combination:

  • Rahu and Jupiter both in inimical signs
  • One in Lagna, one in the 4th house (one each, not necessarily conjoined)

Effect: In the 23rd year, there is danger to father (pituḥ).

[!NOTE] The teacher initially said "13th year" — corrected to 23 (trayoviṃśati).

☀️☽ Verses 43–45 — Summary Principles: Sun/Moon as Karaka

Fundamental principle:

Bhānuḥ pitā ca jantūnāṁ chandro mātā tathā ivaca. "For all beings, Sun is father and Moon is mother."

Affliction checklist for ☀️ Sun (father):

Condition Indicator
Sun conjunct malefics OR hemmed (Pāpakartari) Danger to father
Malefic in 7th from Sun Danger to father
6th, 8th, or 4th from Sun occupied by malefics (no benefics) Evil for father

For ☽ Moon (mother): Apply the same analysis from Moon.

The master key — Bala-Bala Viveka:

Balābala vivēkena kaṣṭaṁ vā mṛityuṁ ādhiṣet. "By wise reckoning of strength and weakness — predict either suffering or death."

Strong afflicting malefic + Weak afflicted significator → Death
Weak afflicting malefic + Strong afflicted significator → Suffering / mild trouble

This principle applies across the entire chapter, not just the final verses.

📚 Chapter 9 Closing & Preview of Chapter 10

"With this, we are done with chapter nine, and we will move on to chapter ten, which is a quick chapter — nine verses. These are antidotes for all the evils mentioned so far. We'll do it in the next class."

After Chapter 10 (remedies/antidotes), the course moves to:

  1. Chapter on meanings of the houses (Bhava significations)
  2. One chapter per house — effects of each house

  • Place: Nidubrolu, Andhra Pradesh, India
  • Longitude: 80°34′ E | Latitude: 16°04′ N

Notable natal factors:

  • Born on Amāvāsyā (New Moon) → Amāvāsyā Doṣa
  • Born on Saṅkrānti day (Sun at 0° Scorpio) → Saṅkrānti Doṣa
  • ♄ Saturn in Lagna (Māraka Sthāna)
  • Atmakaraka (AK): ☽ Moon

📊 D-24 (Chaturviṃśāṁśa) Key Placements

House Planet(s) Notes
Lagna ♂ Mars Lagna lord; athletic; in Prūṣṭhōdaya Rāśi
7th ♄ Saturn 3rd & 4th lord; in friendly sign; in A9, A5, A11
9th ☀️ Sun, ♂ Mars, ☿ Mercury Strong Rāja Yoga; Trilochan Yoga (via Parivartana)
8th ♃ Jupiter, 🐝 Ketu

Parivartana: Moon (9th lord) ↔ Mercury (12th lord) → Moon effectively joins Sun and Mars in the 9th → creates indirect Sun-Moon-Mars combination.

Trilochan Yoga = Sun, Moon, and Mars in mutual trines. This confers exceptional brilliance during that phase of study.

🎯 Education Analysis

Narayan Dasha Seed — 12th vs 4th House

Seed Perspective What It Shows
12th house Parāśara standard Overall learning, evolution, all knowledge
4th house Sanjay Rath's usage Formal education: degrees, college, MBBS

"If you are looking at formal degrees — MBBS, BA — Sanjay ji uses the fourth house. But formal education is also part of overall growth, so the twelfth house should also show it."

Teacher's approach: Uses 12th house primarily as technically correct; 4th house for pinpointing formal schooling milestones. Both are valid — check both.

⏳ Dasha Timeline

Current (at time of class ~2007): Saturn Mahādāśā

Dasha Key Planet Position Education Effect
Saturn MD In 7th, A9 + A5 + A11 Brilliant for education; tops class
Sun AD (upcoming) 9th lord in 12th (Māraka) Tricky — possible health/father concerns
Moon AD Lagna lord; 9th house bhoga Bachelor's begins; auspicious start

"Moon Antardasha starts when he enters college (September 2008). Moon is the 9th lord — lord of 9th house never destroys bachelor's education. He's the greatest benefactor for it."

D-24 Narayan Dasha (12th house seed) — Capricorn Dasha:

  • 1st third: Aspects on Capricorn (Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) → Saturn's aspect from 7th (Kama Trikona) shows strong desire for learning
  • Middle third: Saturn (Capricorn's lord, also in A9) → gives results of Saturn in the 7th

D-24 Narayan Dasha (4th house seed):

  • 4th lord in Rashi = Jupiter; Jupiter in D-24 = Libra (stronger than Aries)
  • Running Scorpio Dasha → last 1/3 (lord Mars in Purva Phalguni = results given in last 1/3)
  • Lagna lord Mars in 9th → bachelor education begins

⚠️ Concerns

Issue Indication
Moon hemmed by all malefics in D-24 Big starting trouble in bachelor's
Moon in Māraka Sthāna in D-24 Longevity concern for studies starting
9th lord in 8th (Dur Yoga) Anxiety, displacement for education
Sun AD (Saturn MD) Father's health / native's health at risk next 1 year
Amāvāsyā & Saṅkrānti Doṣas No remedies done yet

[!WARNING] The next one year (Sun Antardasha in Saturn Mahadasha) is potentially difficult for father's health and the native's own health. Sun = 9th lord in 12th house (Māraka Sthāna), afflicted by Venus (6th lord/Bādhakeśa) and Māṇḍi/Gulika.

  • Navagraha Homa or Sūrya Graha Homa + Mṛtyuñjaya Mantra
  • Saṅkrānti Śānti Puja (priority given Sun is involved)
  • Worship of Jagannath (Dharma Devata — see below)

🔮 Parivartana Dasha Question

Student's question: If the 10th lord is in the 4th house and the 4th lord is in the 10th house (Parivartana), does Chatushpadashi Samudaya Dasha (conditional Dasha requiring 10th lord in 10th house) apply by implication?

Answer: No. Conditional Dasha applicability is not extended via Parivartana. If the condition says the planet must be in its own house, it must be physically placed there. Do not apply Parivartana to activate conditional Dashas.

🕉️ Spirituality, Ishta Devata & Dharma Devata

Navamsa indications for spirituality:

  • Lagna lord in 12th from Ātmakāraka (Moon) in Navamsha → spiritual progress indicated
  • Ketu in 4th in Navamsha → analytical, introspective
  • Mars in Navamsha Lagna → athletic, energetic

D-20 (Viṃśāṁśa) indications:

  • Lagna lord Mars in 12th, with 9th lord Moon and 8th lord Mercury → strong spiritual tendency
  • Jupiter-Venus Rāja Yoga present

Ishta Devata: Mars (Ātmakāraka in Taurus in Navamsha) → Lord Kārttikeya (Murugan/Skanda)

"He's not ready for Ishta Devata worship yet. More important now is Dharma Devata."

Dharma Devata: 9th lord from Moon = Saturn in Sagittarius with Jupiter

→ Dominated by Jupiter (Sagittarius, Guru sign). Saturn → Vishnu. Jovian-Saturnine synthesis.

Suggested deity: Jagannath — Jupiter's universality + Saturn's form of Vishnu.

"Tell him there is a temple in Puri. Jagannath stands for universal brotherhood. Teach him what Jagannath stands for. Some small prayer of Jagannath will be very good for him."

🧭 Career Outlook (Daśāṁśa Preview)

D-10 (Daśāṁśa) exchange: 9th lord ↔ 12th lord (Mercury ↔ Jupiter)

"Ninth and twelfth exchange — fortune and sacrifice. This is the chart of someone who will do good work, make sacrifice for the world. Not super-rich or super-famous. A good doctor who may do philanthropic work — go to a faraway place, help people in need."

Dasha sequence for career:

  • Enters career: end of Saturn Mahādāśā
  • Prime of career: Mercury Mahādāśā — Mercury is in 12th house, 8th from Ārūḍha Lagna → suggests service in relative obscurity, sacrifice-oriented profession
