🕉️ Class 34 — Narayan Dasha Deep Dive: Three-Parts Rule, D24 & Relation Dashas
Using a live chart (male, b. Jan 11 1978, Methuen MA), this class works through the Rasi Narayan Dasha three-parts rule in granular detail — illustrating how to sequence planet-timing within each Mahadasha sub-period, how to read Siddhamsha (D-24) for education, and how to use special "relation dashas" (Dvadashamsha and Pitra Narayana Dasha) to describe the native's relationship with parents and what is happening to the father separately.

🌀 Narayan Dasha — The Three-Parts Rule in Detail
Each Narayan Dasha Mahadasha is divided into three equal parts. When each part gives results depends on whether the sign (Rasi) is Shirshodaya, Prishtodaya, or Ubhayodaya.

Classification of Rasi Types
| Type | Signs | Characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Shirshodaya (head-rising) | Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius | Gives results early (head-first) |
| Prishtodaya (back-rising) | Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn | Gives results late (Pisces is also Prishtodaya) |
| Ubhayodaya (both-rising) | Pisces | Mixed |
[!IMPORTANT] This classification determines when within a Mahadasha the sign vs. its lord vs. occupants/aspecters will peak. Get this right first before any deeper analysis.
📐 Rasi Type Classification: Shirshodaya, Prishtodaya, Ubhayodaya
Memory aid for Prishtodaya: 1, 2, 4, 9, 10 → Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn
Memory aid for Ubhayodaya: Pisces only
All remaining signs are Shirshodaya.
The Three Parts — What Each Contains
First one-third (Sign's own period):
- Results of the sign itself
- Arudha Padas falling in the sign (A3, A4, A7, A9, UL etc.)
- Signs aspecting the dasha sign (by Rashi Drishti)
- Houses aspecting the sign
- This is the inanimate portion — all static, non-personal factors peak here
Middle / Second one-third (Occupants + Aspecters):
- Planets occupying the dasha sign
- Planets aspecting the sign by Rashi Drishti
- These are the animate influences
Third one-third (Lord):
- Lord of the dasha sign
- The sign lord's own position, yogas, and avasthas determine quality
[!NOTE] For Shirshodaya signs: sign gives 1st, occupants/aspecters give 2nd, lord gives 3rd. For Prishtodaya signs: sign gives 1st, lord gives 2nd, occupants/aspecters give 3rd.
⏳ Malefic vs Benefic: Task-List Order in Sub-Periods
When a planet controls a sub-period within Narayan Dasha (as occupant, aspector, or lord), it gives results in a specific sequential order depending on whether it is a natural benefic or malefic:
| Sub-period quarter | Malefic gives | Benefic gives |
|---|---|---|
| 1st quarter | Avastha (state/mood) | Houses it owns |
| 2nd quarter | Yogas it participates in | Yogas it participates in |
| 3rd quarter | Houses it owns | Avastha (state/mood) |
| 4th quarter | House it occupies | House it occupies |
[!TIP] Benefics lead with their most constructive influence (owned houses → yogas → avastha → occupied house). Malefics lead with their internal state (which may be troubled), ending with their physical house placement.
🌌 Avastha (Planetary States) — Guide to Strength
Basic Avastha (Age-based)
| State | Age Analogy | Strength of Results |
|---|---|---|
| Bala | Infant | Very weak |
| Kumara | Adolescent | Partial |
| Yuva | Young adult | Full (peak) |
| Vridha | Old | Weakening |
| Mruta | Dead | Minimal/absent |
[!NOTE] These are guidelines, not absolutes. A prodigy child may have strong results even in Bala Avastha. Use contextually.
Sayanadi Avastha (Activity-based) — More Important
| State | Condition | Results |
|---|---|---|
| Jagruta | Awake | Full results |
| Swapna | Dreaming | Half results |
| Sushupti | Asleep | Zero results |
In jHora: Strength tab → Other strength sub-tab → Basic Avastha / Sayanadi Avastha. Find in same place as Vimshopaka Bala, Amsha Bala.
Additional Sayanadi states include:
- Mrtyulipsa Avastha — "desirous of dancing" — planet is very active, wants to give its results enthusiastically
📊 Live Chart Example — Leo Mahadasha (1998–2006)
Chart: Male, b. Jan 11 1978, 12:23 PM, Methuen MA. Aries lagna, Moon in Aquarius. Subject: Dropped out of college, in meditation/seclusion; mother sought consultation.
Leo Mahadasha (1998–2006) — Education Analysis
Leo is a Shirshodaya sign:
- 1st one-third (1998–2000): Leo itself — 5th house (abilities). Not inherently bad.
- 2nd one-third (2000 Sep–2003 May): Saturn occupies Leo (5th house)
Saturn's Sub-Period Breakdown
| Quarter | What Saturn Gives | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (state) | In enemy's house (Leo/Sun) + retrograde — very uncomfortable | Terrible for abilities |
| 2nd (yogas) | Chandra-Shani Yoga (Moon conjunct Saturn or in mutual aspect) | Disinterest, tendency to renunciation/depression |
| 3rd (owned houses) | 10th + 11th lord in 5th | Relatively better — career/gains agenda applied to 5th house |
| 4th (occupied house) | Saturn occupying 5th house | 5th house suppressed; abilities blunted |
[!WARNING] Saturn in Sun's house: Saturn hates being with his father (Sun). He is waiting to leave. He is forced there, resentful. The dispositor will not cooperate. This is a deeply uncomfortable placement.
Chandra-Shani Yoga (Moon + Saturn conjunct or aspecting):
At mild: disinterest in material things, lack of motivation
At strong: can trigger renunciation-like withdrawal or depression
Here: Moon in Aquarius (Saturn's sign) → strong Shani influence on Moon
3rd one-third (2003 May–2006 Jan): Sun (lord of Leo) gives his results
Sun's Sub-Period Breakdown
| Quarter | What Sun Gives | Period | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (state) | In Sagittarius (friend Jupiter's house); Mrtyulipsa Avastha (active) | 2003 May–2004 Jan | Reasonably good; comfortable state |
| 2nd (yogas) | Raja Yoga with Venus (5th lord + 7th lord); BUT Venus combust (1.5° separation) | 2004 Jan–Sep | Relationship/heartbreak issue; uncomfortable Raja Yoga |
| 3rd (owned houses) | 5th lord promoting 5th house abilities | 2004 Sep–2005 May | Good for sharpening abilities, building resume, recognition |
| 4th (occupied house) | Sun in 9th house (Sagittarius) | 2005 May–2006 Jan | Following dharma, listening to parents, clarity of purpose |
[!IMPORTANT] Sun + Venus conjunction: One of the most uncomfortable Raja Yogas. Venus is watery (Jal tattva); Sun is fire (Agni tattva). Their closeness causes Venus to lose power — like the Parasurama–Rama meeting where Parasurama lost all his energy to Rama. Planets to combine well in Raja Yoga: Sun-Mars, Sun-Jupiter, Venus-Saturn, Venus-Mercury. Not Sun-Venus.
Conclusion for this Mahadasha: The 2000–2003 Saturn period triggered the dropout. The 2003+ Sun period shows gradual improvement. By 2005 onward, the native becomes more interested in completing studies.
🔮 Virgo Mahadasha (2006–2015) — Complete Walkthrough
Virgo = Shirshodaya (Virgo is sign 6 → the 6th in the zodiac) Lord = Mercury (in Sagittarius = Prishtodaya) → lord gives results in last one-third
Three Parts of Virgo Mahadasha
| Period | Years | What gives results | Key themes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st one-third | 2006–2009 | Virgo sign + all Arudha Padas (A4, A9, UL, A10) + signs aspecting (3rd, 9th, 12th) | Vehicle/house (A4), lucky breaks (A9), marriage prospect (UL), job (A10), short travels (3rd aspect), possible relocation (9th+12th aspect) |
| 2nd one-third | 2009–2012 | Occupants & aspecters of Virgo: Sun, Venus, Rahu, Ketu, Jupiter (in decreasing longitude order) | Career recognition (Sun, 5th lord); fortunate period (Venus, 9th lord from Virgo); health caution (Rahu in Lagna = bad for health) |
| 3rd one-third | 2012–2015 | Mercury (lord) in Sagittarius | Mercury is lagna lord + 10th lord from Virgo; parivartana with Jupiter → excellent for career and learning |
Judgment from Virgo as Dasha Lagna
| Planet | House from Virgo | Nature | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn | 12th | Malefic | Bad (not in 3/6/11) |
| Moon | 6th | Benefic (Shukla Paksha) | Bad (benefic in 6th = no agitation needed) |
| Mars | 11th | Malefic | Good (malefic in 11th) |
| Jupiter | 4th | Benefic | Good (benefic in trine/quadrant) |
| Venus, Sun, Mercury | 4th | Mixed | Very good (Raja Yogas among them from Virgo) |
Overall: Excellent period for career and education; marriage possible in 1st one-third (UL aspecting); health watch in 2009–2010 (Rahu period).
Sequencing the 6 Planets in 2nd One-Third
Order = decreasing longitude (AK before AMK, etc. using Chara Karaka order as guide):
Sun → Venus → Rahu → Ketu → Jupiter → Mercury
Each gets ~6 months (3 years ÷ 6 = 6 months each):
| Sub-period | Approx dates | Planet | Key result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2009 Jan–Jul | Sun | Recognition of abilities (5th lord aspect) |
| 2 | 2009 Jul–2010 Jan | Venus | Very fortunate (9th lord from Virgo, benefic aspect) |
| 3 | 2010 Jan–Jul | Rahu | Health caution — Rahu in 6th from Rashi lagna = health problems |
| 4 | 2010 Jul–2011 Jan | Ketu | Spiritual, detached |
| 5 | 2011 Jan–Jul | Jupiter | Career luck (10th house from Virgo) |
| 6 | 2011 Jul–2012 Jan | Mercury | Lagna lord results |
[!WARNING] The 2010 Jan–Jul Rahu period should be watched for health. Cross-check with the 2010 Tithi Pravesh chart: Hora lord Mercury (6th lord) is with Rahu and Gulika/Mandi within 3° → corroborates health concern. Advise precautions from 2009 onwards.
📚 D24 Siddhamsha & Education — The Right Narayan Dasha
Two D24 Narayan Dasha types:
| Dasha Type | Seed | Shows |
|---|---|---|
| Standard D24 Narayan | 12th lord of Rasi chart (placed in D24) | Supreme learning; understanding God in everything; Siddha Hamsa — path to moksha |
| Education Narayan (Sanjayji's method) | 4th lord of Rasi chart (placed in D24) | Formal schooling; bachelor's-level academic learning |
[!NOTE] 4th house = basic/school education; 9th house = bachelor's/university education; 10th house = professional/career learning. Use appropriate house lord as seed for the corresponding educational concern.
In jHora: Options button in Narayan Dasha → change "Start dashas from" to the D24 sign containing the relevant seed lord.
Example: Taurus Dasha in D24 Education (1990–2001)
Taurus is Sirshodaya → sign gives results first, occupants/aspecters second, lord (Venus) last.
In the last one-third: the sign gives its results via inanimate factors — A8 and A3 are both aspecting Taurus in D24 → indicates a break in education (A8 = complete break; A3 = short break). This period indeed saw the native drop out of college.
Next dasha — Gemini (D24, 2001–2006):
- Gemini is Sirshodaya → lord Mercury (also Sirshodaya) gives in last one-third
- Last sub-period: Sun gives results of 4th lord in 2nd house (resources for learning) → relatively better; native tries to enroll
- Final sub-period: Saturn (9th and 10th lord in D24) aspects Gemini → Yogakaraka for this chart → duty, recognition, fulfilling dharma
- Tithi Pravesh 2005: Hora lord Sun in 5th house; lagna lord Venus + 9th lord Mercury in quadrant = Raja Yoga → strong candidate year for resuming bachelor's education
Conclusion: After March 2005, the native becomes more dutiful toward finishing his degree. The coming years (especially 2006–2012 in Rasi Narayan Dasha) are very good for career and lucky breaks.
🪔 Droha Dasha — Spiritual Progress Indicator
A special dasha that shows when God's light (Droha) falls on the native and guides spiritual progress.
Key principle:
- Dasha sign aspected by Ketu → period of genuine spiritual growth, awakening
- Dasha sign aspected or occupied by Rahu → period of spiritual confusion, not true progress
In dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): Both Rahu and Ketu are in dual signs → both aspects are always present simultaneously → alternating periods of growth and confusion within the same dasha.
For this chart: All four Droha Dasha signs from birth are dual signs → Ketu's influence is persistent from birth → native has been spiritually inclined from earliest age (confirmed: grew up in household frequently visited by swamis). Virgo dasha, however, brings Rahu's occupation → this is primarily a period of confusion, not true spiritual progress.
🏠 Dvadashamsha Narayan Dasha — Relationship with Parents
Purpose: Shows the give-and-take between the native and parents; how the native behaves with parents; how parents support the native.
Seed: Twelfth lord of Rasi chart placed in Dvadashamsha (D12).
Reading the current Pisces Dasha (D12):
| Sub-period | Planet(s) | Result for Parent Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 1st one-third | Rahu, Ketu, Moon | Rahu (Lagna lord) with Moon (6th lord = quarrels) → native quarrels with parents; friction; tends to disobey |
| 2nd one-third | Pisces sign itself | 2nd house in D12; A4 aspects it → mother's influence increases; native uses parental resources well |
| 3rd one-third | Jupiter (lord, in 6th from Lagna) | Jupiter benefic in 6th → peaceful attitude; less friction; relationship with parents improves significantly |
Verdict: Worst phase of parent friction is over; subsequent years (after 2007) bring much better relationship with parents.
🧬 Pitra Narayan Dasha — What Happens to Father
Technique: Take the 9th house as Lagna (9th house = father). Find the stronger of the 9th house sign and its opposite. Run Narayan Dasha from the stronger sign. Interpret as if the 9th house sign were the father's personal Lagna.
Applied to example chart (9th house = Libra):
| Dasha | Years | Result for Father |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio (2nd from Libra) | 1990–2000 | Excellent financial growth; significant wealth accumulation; career recognition |
| Libra (own sign) | 2000–2008 | Saturn + Venus in Lagna = Tapasvi Yoga (hard work + recognition); Sun gives professional success; period of establishing status and resources |
| Sagittarius (3rd from Libra) | Current | Moon + Rahu = career/children worry; Ketu = father becomes more spiritual; Jupiter in 10th (from Libra) = good Jupiterian career karma, teaching/counseling possible |
[!TIP] To time father's health risks: look for Dasha periods where Maranakara Sthana or afflicted 8th house patterns emerge in the Pitra Dasha. Cross-confirm with father's Tithi Pravesh if birth data is available.
📊 Planet Placement Rules in Narayan Dasha Judgment
When taking the dasha sign as Lagna and evaluating planets:
| Planet type | Good houses (from dasha Lagna) | Bad houses |
|---|---|---|
| Benefics | 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (quadrants and trines) | 3, 6 |
| Malefics | 3, 6, 11 only | All other houses |
[!IMPORTANT] This rule applies only when judging planets from the Narayan Dasha sign as Lagna. It is different from standard natal chart interpretation where malefics in Upachaya (3/6/10/11) are good and malefics in Kendras are mixed.
Arudha Pada Results in Narayan Dasha (1st one-third)
| Arudha | What it bestows when aspecting dasha sign |
|---|---|
| A3 | Short break, or travel, or showing initiative |
| A4 | Vehicle, house, or comfort |
| A7 | Marriage or partnership |
| A8 (Mrityu Pada) | Complete break from that area (career, education, etc.) |
| A9 | Lucky break; tangible manifestation of fortune |
| A10 | Job or career event |
| UL (Upapada Lagna) | Marriage |
Sign Nature for Arudha Lagna Context
| Sign | Nature | Effect from Arudha Lagna (3rd/6th) |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer, Libra | Benefic | If in 3rd/6th: person gives up easily; no fighting spirit (sadhu-like behavior) |
| Sagittarius, Pisces | Benefic | Same: no initiative shown |
| Aries, Scorpio | Malefic | Lots of fighting spirit from 3/6 |
| Gemini, Virgo | Neutral | Middle ground; some initiative, some give-up |
| Taurus, Leo | Benefic | Comfortable but less aggressive |
