💊 BPHS Chapter 17 — Disease and Body Parts

Principle 1 — Sign of the 6th House → Afflicted Body Area

The rāśi (sign) containing the 6th house points to the body region where disease or physical problems may manifest:

"The sign containing the sixth house — based on that sign, decide in what area of the body the problem is."

Example: If the 6th house is in Virgo, the body area is the lower abdomen / liver.

[!NOTE] PVR notes that this principle could alternatively be applied to the sign occupied by the 6th lord (not just the house itself). Both interpretations yield useful information. The verse technically says ṣaṣṭha (sixth house), not ṣaṣṭheśa (sixth lord), so PVR presents both and lets practitioners test which is more reliable in specific charts.

Principle 2 — Karaka-Lord Conjunction for Relative's Disease

Parāśara's verse: "evam pitrādi bhāveśāḥ tat-tat-kāraka saṃyutāḥ"

Translation: "Like this, for father and other houses, when the house lord is combined with its respective Kāraka..."

The rule for judging disease affecting relatives:

  • Take the lord of the relevant house (e.g., 9th house = father)
  • Take the Kāraka of that relative (Sun for father, Moon for mother, Mars for younger brother, Jupiter for elder brother and son)
  • If those two planets are either:
    • Conjoined with the 6th lord anywhere in the chart, OR
    • Placed in the 6th or 8th house
  • Then the corresponding relative has a health problem
Relative House Kāraka
Father 9th house Sun
Mother 4th house Moon
Younger brother 3rd house Mars
Elder brother / Son 5th/9th house Jupiter
Spouse 7th house Venus

🩺 Planetary Disease Associations

Parāśara gives specific body areas and disease types associated with each planet when that planet is involved in the 6th house affliction pattern:

Planet Body Area / Disease Type
Sun Head area; fever (Jwara)
Moon Face area; Kapha diseases (phlegm, pneumonia, tuberculosis, danger of drowning)
Mars Throat area; blood problems, wounds caused by weapons (Śastravraṇa)
Mercury Navel/abdomen area; Pitta diseases (liver, bile)
Jupiter Nose area; no disease / freedom from disease (Jupiter in the combination rescues from affliction)
Venus Eyes; sexual/venereal diseases
Saturn Feet/legs area; Vāta diseases (joint pain, arthritis, rheumatism, breathing problems, anxiety, sleep deprivation, nervous weakness, general debilitation)
Rahu Upper stomach/digestive tract; danger from low-caste people (quarrels with unruly people)
Ketu Navel area; navel-region diseases

How to Apply

PVR's guidance on using this table:

  1. Identify the planet(s) involved in the 6th house pattern (in Lagna, or in 6th/8th, or conjoined with 6th lord).
  2. The planet who is most dominant in that bad combination indicates the body area.
  3. The Daśā/Antardaśā timing triggers the manifestation.

Example: If the 6th lord is Mars and he is with Moon in Lagna:

  • Currently in Moon Daśā → Kapha problems (phlegm, colds)
  • When Mars Daśā comes later → blood problems or wound risk

[!TIP] Use this principle in Dvādaśāṃśa (D-12) for disease of relatives (father, mother, etc.). Take the Lagna corresponding to the relative in D-12, find the 6th lord there, and apply the same planet-to-disease mapping. The Daśā of the afflicting planet in D-12 will time the health problem.

🦠 Leprosy Combinations (Kuṣṭha Vyādhi)

Parāśara dedicates several verses to kuṣṭha (leprosy), which in the ancient context meant severe disfiguring skin conditions with loss of sensation and deformation of extremities.

Combination 1 — Mars or Mercury as Lagna Lord

Lagna lord in the sign of Mars or Mercury, OR afflicted by Mercury → face/skin problems.

Rationale:

  • Mars signs (Aries, Scorpio): Mars is the Kāraka of disease (roga kāraka) generally
  • Mercury signs (Gemini, Virgo): Mercury is the natural 3rd and 6th lord of the natural zodiac (the "natural functional malefic" for the natural Aries Lagna). Virgo is the 6th house of the natural zodiac, making Mercury disease-prone for the Lagna lord when placed there.

Combination 2 — Full Leprosy Combination

Lagna lord = Mars or Mercury + conjoined by Moon, Rahu, and Saturn → kuṣṭha vyādhi (leprosy)

Moon is the key planet in all leprosy combinations — as the Kāraka of blood and skin, Moon's affliction by Saturn, Rahu, and Mars creates the disease pattern.

Three varieties of leprosy by planet:

  • RahuŚveta kuṣṭha (white/fair-colored leprosy)
  • SaturnKṛṣṇa kuṣṭha (dark/black leprosy)
  • MarsRakta kuṣṭha (reddish/ruddy leprosy)

Combination 3 — Moon and Rahu in Lagna (Without Lagna Lord)

Moon + Rahu in Lagna, but Lagna lord is absentŚveta kuṣṭha (white leprosy).

The Lagna lord's absence means there is no protective counterforce. If the Lagna lord were also present, he would control Moon and Rahu and prevent the worst manifestation.

Medical Astrology Usage

PVR's practical guidance:

"You can't really treat diseases using astrology. You can treat them using medicine — Ayurveda or allopathy."

What astrology CAN do:

  1. Predict vulnerability to a disease before it manifests → advise lifestyle adjustments, avoidance of risk factors
  2. Suggest dietary changes (e.g., if strong Pitta indicators → avoid spicy food; if Kapha indicators → increase spices)
  3. Advise early medical screening (e.g., cancer risk indicators → recommend regular checkups in the relevant Daśā)

[!IMPORTANT] PVR raises a broader concern about modern chemical exposure: thermocol (styrofoam) in microwaves releasing carcinogens, petroleum-based dishwashing liquids, Rubbermaid plastics in microwaves, and ubiquitous artificial food additives. He predicts an epidemic of cancer in coming decades, particularly among young people. From this context, he recommends cooking in traditional iron, copper, gold, or silver vessels and avoiding artificial materials. This commentary is offered as lifestyle guidance, not astrological prediction.

👨‍👩‍👧 Diseases for Relatives — Extension Principle

The same body-area/disease mapping that applies to the native also applies to relatives:

Rule (Parāśara): When the house lord of a relative + the Kāraka of that relative are afflicted (by 6th lord, or placed in 6th/8th), you can identify the likely body area using the dominating planet in the combination.

Application example:

  • Suppose the 9th lord (father) and Sun (Kāraka of father) are together in the 6th house, and the 6th lord is Saturn.
  • Sun is covered by Saturn's affliction.
  • Saturn → feet/legs. Therefore: father has problems in the foot/leg area (or more broadly: Vāta-type problems — joint pain, arthritis, nerve weakness).

PVR extends this principle to relevant Daśā triggering:

"Whatever planet is causing the affliction, when its Daśā or Antardaśā comes, that is when the health problem manifests."

🔬 Applying This in Divisional Charts

PVR recommends extending all 6th-house/disease principles into divisional charts:

Chart Application
D-1 (Rāśi) Native's own health; general disease tendencies
D-12 (Dvādaśāṃśa) Health of father (9th house of D-12), mother (4th house of D-12), etc.
D-6 (Ṣaṣṭhāṃśa) Specific disease charts; for serious illness such as cancer, checking Ṣaṣṭhāṃśa Parāyaṇa Daśā
D-7 (Saptāṃśa) Children's health
D-9 (Navāṃśa) Spouse's health

[!NOTE] For cancer risk specifically, PVR suggests checking the Ṣaṣṭhāṃśa (D-6) for Saturn/Rahu combinations in the 6th or 8th house, along with the running Daśā, to identify high-risk periods. Early recommendation for medical screening during such periods can be lifesaving.

🔤 Name Astrology — Akṣara Śāstra

This class includes a substantial teaching on the astrological significance of names, prompted by a student asking about a name change (V. Rāo changing his name to Nāgarjuna).

Does Name Change Chart Matter?

PVR's view: The chart cast at the time of name change is not particularly significant. What matters is the name itself — specifically what energy it invokes when people use it.

"Basically, what kind of energies in the chart this name is bringing out."

Numerology Disclaimer

PVR explicitly rejects western-style numerological name calculations (adding letter values R=1, A=1, M=1, etc.):

"Just by spelling your name as R-A-M-A or R-J-A-M-A, you are not really making any difference. People will still call you Ramakrishna. So there is no value to just changing the English language spelling."

What matters is the phonetic first letter of the name — the actual sound by which people address you.

Planetary Rulerships of Sanskrit Sounds (Akṣaras)

Each planet rules certain sounds in the Sanskrit phonological system:

Planet Akṣara (Letter) Group Examples
Sun All vowels (svara) A, Ā, I, Ī, U, Ū, E, Ai, O, Au
Moon Semi-vowels (antaḥstha) Ya, Ra, La, Va
Mars Ka-varga Ka, Kha, Ga, Gha (and their Anunāsika)
Venus Cha-varga Ca, Cha, Ja, Jha
Mercury Ṭa-varga Ṭa, Ṭha, Ḍa, Ḍha, Ṇa
Jupiter Ta-varga Ta, Tha, Da, Dha, Na
Saturn Pa-varga Pa, Pha, Ba, Bha, Ma
Sibilants/Ha Sa, Śa, Ṣa, Ha — subsumed under Moon's semi-vowels in some schemes

How to Use This

The first letter of the name determines which planet's energy is continuously invoked every time someone addresses the native:

"If you see someone with Haṃsa Yoga in the chart, give a name starting with Ta, Tha, Da, Dha, Na (Jupiter sounds). If someone has a great Saturn yoga, give a name starting with Pa, Pha, Ba, Bha, Ma (Saturn sounds)."

PVR's Personal Example

PVR shares how his own name usage shifted:

Period Name Used Planet Invoked Significance
Academic years PBR (initials) Saturn Saturn Daśā running; Saturn is 5th lord giving Rājayoga → academic distinctions, IIT, Sanskrit BA at age 10
Professional years Narasimha Jupiter (Na = Jupiter varga) Jupiter in 2nd house → deeper study of astrology, teaching, speaking

"As people started calling me Narasimha more, the astrologer Narasimha became stronger. I got more into astrology, speaking more, etc."

Nāma Nakṣatra Tradition

The traditional Indian system of giving names based on the Nakṣatra pada of the birth Moon:

  • Each of the 27 Nakṣatras has 4 pādas → 108 letter associations
  • The letter of the birth Nakṣatra pāda is traditionally used for the first syllable of the name

PVR's assessment: This system was primarily a mnemonic device for astrologers, not a sacred decree:

"It was so that if somebody forgets the nakshatra, the astrologer can ask, 'What is your name?' 'Rāma.' 'Okay, Ra — so-and-so nakshatra, so-and-so pada.' He can then at least do transits."

The system's real value was in recording birth data in pre-digital times. It does not supersede the more important consideration of which planet is strong and giving good results in the chart.

🏠 Live Chart — House Sale Question (V. Rāo / Vijaya, Nov 11, 1965)

Chart Data

Parameter Value
Name Vijaya Puttukāyala (V. Rāo)
Date of Birth November 11, 1965
Time of Birth 7:57 PM IST
Place of Birth Māruteru (81°44′E, 16°38′N), Andhra Pradesh
Lagna Gemini (Jupiter in Lagna — Dṛk Saptadaśā applicable)
Question Whether to sell the house this year (2007) or next year (2008)

The question: sell a house in the Acton area and move closer to husband's workplace. Open to renting temporarily before buying a new house.

Why Dṛk Saptadaśā?

Jupiter is both the 7th lord and is placed in the Lagna → the condition for using the Dṛk Saptadaśā (the 72-year variant of Nārāyaṇa Daśā) is met.

Current Daśās at Time of Analysis

System Running Daśā Next Antardaśā
Dṛk Saptadaśā (Rāśi) Moon Daśā Moon–Sun coming up
Vimśottarī Saturn–Saturn Saturn–Mercury soon

Analysis Layer 1 — Rāśi Chart

  • Moon: Exalted but eclipsed by Rahu in the 12th house; some spiritual gains, some anxiety and tensions during Moon Daśā
  • Sun (Antardaśā): 3rd lord; from Moon (Daśā lord), Sun is 4th lord in the 6th house (dusthāna placement) → hints at change of residence but not conclusive
  • Saturn–Mercury (Vimśottarī, next): Mercury as Lagna lord shows new beginnings; better chance of residence change

Analysis Layer 2 — Chaturthamsa (D-4)

The Chaturthamsa (D-4) is the definitive chart for residence and real estate.

Current year's Tithi Praveśa D-4 chart:

  • Ruler of the year: Saturn
  • A4 (Ārūḍha of 4th house): In the 8th house → Very conducive to change of residence (A4 in 8th or 12th = strong indicator of moving out)
  • A8: In the 4th house → Parivartana-like connection between A4 and A8

"A8 in 4th house, A4 in 8th house — this is a kind of Parivartana. An almost guaranteed change of residence."

  • Venus Daśā (Tithi Aṣṭottarī of annual chart): Venus is the 4th lord in the 6th house (māraka sthāna from A4), with Mercury (8th lord). A11 is in the 9th house (trine = flourishing). Venus owns A11.
    • Venus can give up the old residence (4th lord in 6th = death of 4th house things)
    • A11 in trine = gains from the sale are likely
    • A4 and A8 lords (Venus and Mercury) are together in the 6th house → powerful indication of change + dissolution of current residence

Next year's Tithi Praveśa D-4 chart:

  • Ruler of the year: Venus
  • Lagna: Contains Moon and Jupiter (Gaja Keśarī Yoga) + A9 (fortune)
  • A4: With A8 in a dusthāna again — but Lagna lord is in A4
  • 4th house: Saturn + Ketu; 4th lord Mars in trine (5th house) — favorable for finding a new home

Analysis Layer 3 — Nārāyaṇa Daśā (Rāśi Chart)

Scorpio Nārāyaṇa Daśā running 2005 Nov – 2008 Nov:

  • Lord of Scorpio (for this chart): Ketu → Middle 1/3 of the Daśā
  • Aspects: Sun → Last 1/3 of the Daśā

Both Ketu and Sun are Māraka from A4:

  • Ketu: Bādhakeśa from A4 and joins another Māraka (Moon)
  • Sun: 8th lord in the 7th (strong Māraka) and aspects 11th from A4 (Bādhaka)

Result: Both the middle 1/3 (current) and last 1/3 (after Nov 2007) show change of residence.

Prediction Summary

Period Prediction
July–August 2007 Strong window for selling the old house (Venus Daśā in Tithi Praveśa, before August 5) — very likely to find a buyer and profit
Post-sale Move into an apartment for a few months
Spring 2008 window Feb 14 – Apr 21 as one window; Aug 16 – Sep 6 as another → find and buy new house
Warning Do not miss the July–August window; Moon Daśā that follows is not as strong for selling

"Put it on the market. If you price it properly and select a good Muhurta to sign the real estate agreement, there is a very strong chance you'll be able to sell within a couple of months — before the end of August."

Regarding gains: A11 in trine from Lagna in D-4 confirms the sale will yield profit, not just a change. The native should both be able to sell profitably and eventually find a better house.

Name Analysis — Vijaya

PVR briefly analyzes the native's first name Vijaya (starts with Va):

  • Va = Moon's semi-vowel group
  • Moon in this chart: exalted in the 12th house with Rahu
  • Effect: The name continuously invokes an exalted-but-eclipsed Moon in the 12th house → some anxiety, ups and downs in life, but also conducive to spirituality; better outcomes after relocation from birthplace (12th house = foreign lands)

Alternative suggestions: Names starting with Na (Jupiter, in Lagna), or Pa/Ma (Saturn, 9th lord in Moola Trikona for fortune).

🧘 Second Spiritual Chart — Nārāyaṇa Daśā of D-20

A second student (Speaker 7) asks about their spiritual path. This chart has:

  • Lagna: Libra (D-20)
  • Ātmakāraka: Moon (10th lord, exalted in the 8th house of D-20)
  • Iṣṭa Devatā: Venus (12th from Moon's AK position in Navāṃśa)
  • Current Daśā: Moon Viṃśottarī Daśā — "a priceless Daśā" for spiritual progress

Mars Daśā Concern

The student asks whether the upcoming Mars Daśā (after Moon Daśā) will continue the spiritual progress or represent a setback.

PVR's analysis:

In the Rāśi chart, Mars is 6th + 11th lord (not a natural Mokṣa planet). He does not create a natural exchange with Venus (5th/12th lord). However:

  • Mars is dispositor of Ketu
  • Lagna lord (Mercury) joins Ketu → natural affinity to spirituality throughout life
  • From Ketu's perspective: Mars is in the 12th house from Ketu (counted anticlockwise) → Mokṣa-conducive placement

In Viṃśāṃśa:

  • Mars in 2nd house in own sign: Strong Mars
  • Exchange with Saturn (Saturn is yogakāraka): Mars gives Saturn's yogakāraka results and vice versa
  • Both Mars and Saturn aspect Moon: Mars → determination/stubbornness; Saturn → dispassion/detachment

"When Mars and Saturn are together and aspecting Moon, the person will make very fast progress towards detachment of the mind."

Viṃśāṃśa Nārāyaṇa Daśā Analysis

Daśā Sign Period Key Features
Aquarius Previous
Taurus (current) Ongoing 8th house of D-20 — severe tapascharya; A5 = mantra sādhana; last 1/3 (after 2008 March) = real crescendo
Gemini (upcoming) ~2011–2017 9th house of D-20; lord Mercury with Jupiter and with UL; Raja Yoga between A9 and A10; organized spiritual activities; becoming more public
Mercury Daśā later Results of sādhana may manifest; possible siddhis (see 6th house) but should not be attached to them

"Two thousand November to two thousand eleven November is the real important period — the turning period to realize your real potential. The Taurus Daśā crescendo: severe tapascharya."

"After 2011 you will be more in the open — doing organized religious activities, more organized activities. But right now is the time of solitary tapascharya."

Upapada from Moon — Important Meditation Indicator

PVR introduces a technique specific to D-20 for identifying spiritually productive periods:

"Take the twelfth house from Moon in D-20 and take its Ārūḍha — the Upapada from Moon. When the Daśā or Antardaśā of signs aspecting this Upapada is running, meditation becomes particularly deep and pleasant."

Also useful in daily Tithi Praveśa charts:

  • 8th from Moon or 12th from Moon and their Ārūḍhas in the daily annual chart → periods of very pleasant, deep meditation

"The silence of the mind — the relative silence — is the goal of all sādhana. As long as mind is active, you are still on the path. When mind becomes completely silent or partially silent, that is when you have actually reached the goal."

Mahālakṣmī as Iṣṭa Devatā

Venus is the Iṣṭa Devatā (12th from AK in Navāṃśa). In D-20, Venus is in the 12th from Moon as well, confirming the importance:

  • D-20 Lagna and Moon are both in Venus signs
  • Venus in 12th from Moon = the "giver of Mokṣa" for this person's mind

The worship style indicated by Venus is non-dogmatic:

"Venus does not show dogmatism. So your spirituality, if you can cultivate a level where you don't care about whether a flower is being used or something else is being used, or whether somebody is praying to Kṛṣṇa or Kāli or Christ. If you don't distinguish — that is better because Venus likes... he could even embrace Dānavas. He could teach the demons. He doesn't like to distinguish."

📊 Durdaśā — Note on Calculation Controversy

PVR mentions an ongoing personal research into the correct calculation of Durdaśā (a Rāśi-based Daśā system):

"What I did here is I just took Sanjay Ji's interpretation, but later I got convinced that this is not right."

PVR's concerns:

  • Sanjay Rath's calculation of Durdaśā is based on notes taken quickly from a guru; Sanjay Rath himself acknowledged the possibility of error when PVR raised the issue
  • Robert Koch's book on spiritual astrology (Spiritual Astrology compendium) uses an even more detailed treatment of Durdaśā — but PVR believes the calculations are fundamentally wrong throughout
  • For dual signs (ubhaya rāśi), Parāśara is somewhat ambiguous, and PVR has developed his own interpretation

Current status: PVR has a corrected version of Durdaśā programmed in his personal version of JHora but has not yet released it publicly, to avoid confusion. He plans to explain the correct interpretation before releasing.

[!NOTE] Durdaśā analysis for this student's chart will be revisited in a future class.
