🏠 BPHS Chapter 15 — Effects of the Fourth House

Chapter title: Sukha Bhava Phala Adhyayam — Results of the Fourth House (House of Happiness).

Verse 1: Fourth or Lagna Lord in 4th, Aspected by Benefics

Sanskrit:

Sukheśe sukha bhāvasthe lagneśe tadgathe'pi vā. Śubha dṛṣṭe ca jātasya pūrṇaṁ gṛha sukhaṁ vadhet.

Condition Result
4th lord in the 4th house, aspected by benefics Complete happiness from home (pūrṇaṁ gṛha sukham)
Lagna lord in the 4th house, aspected by benefics Same result

Why the Lagna lord? The Lagna is the very core of existence — the body and self. The 4th house is the house of sukha (comfort). When the core-self planet occupies the house of comfort, it is naturally conducive to physical and domestic comfort — just as the 4th lord in the 4th house.

Verse 2: Fourth Lord in Own/Exaltation Sign or Navamsa

Sanskrit:

Svagehe svāṁśake svocche sukhasthānādhipo yadi. Bhūmi yāna gṛhadīnāṁ sukhaṁ vādya bhavaṁ tathā.

Condition: 4th lord in own sign, own Navamśa, own Chaturthamśa (D-4), or exaltation sign.

Results: Happiness from:

Signification Sanskrit
Land / real estate Bhūmi
Vehicles / travel Yāna
House of residence Gṛha
Musical instruments Vādya
Et cetera Ādi

[!NOTE] Musical instruments (vādya) are a fourth house signification — this is explicitly new information Parashara adds here. The fourth house does not merely cover house, vehicle, and land; it also covers musical instruments one possesses or plays.

Extending the principle: If the 4th lord is well-placed in Siddhamsa (D-24, education chart) rather than Chaturthamsa, the result shifts from house/vehicle to education. The person may be very well-educated. PVR's own example: Virgo Lagna, 4th lord Jupiter in Pisces in a kendra in D-24 → excellent academic achievement.

[!TIP] Always adapt the divisional chart to match the signification in question. The same 4th lord placed well in different divisional charts gives results relevant to that division's domain.

Verse 3: Fourth Lord and Tenth Lord Together in Kendra/Trine

Sanskrit:

Karmadhipena saṁyukte kendre koṇe gṛhādhipe. Vicitra saudha prakārair maṇḍitaṁ tad gṛhaṁ vadhet.

  • Karmadhipa = 10th lord
  • Gṛhādhipa = 4th lord
  • Vicitra = strange/beautiful; Saudha = palace/mansion; Maṇḍita = adorned

Condition: 10th lord conjoins 4th lord in a kendra or koṇa.

Result: Not just a comfortable house — a magnificent mansion or palace (vicitra saudha), adorned and opulent.

Why does the 10th lord matter for the house? The 10th house is the 7th from the 4th house. As the 7th shows extroversion and public-facing aspects of any reference house, the 10th house (7th from 4th) shows the public face/visibility of the house. When the 4th lord and 10th lord are together, both the inner comfort and the external visibility/grandeur of the house are combined — resulting in an impressive, palace-like dwelling that others notice and admire.

Verse 4: Fourth Lord is Benefic, with Functional Benefics, Mercury in Lagna

Sanskrit:

Bandhu sthāneśvare saumye śubha graha yute kṣite. Śaśijāye lagna saṁyukte bandhu pūjyo bhavennaraḥ.

Key distinction: Parashara's consistent terminology:

  • Saumya = natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, waxing Moon)
  • Śubha = functional benefic (depends on Lagna)
  • Śaśijāya = son of Śaśi (Moon) = Mercury

Conditions:

  1. 4th lord is a natural benefic (saumya)
  2. 4th lord is with or aspected by a functional benefic (śubha)
  3. Mercury is in Lagna

Result: The person is respected and honored by relatives (bandhu pūjya).

Why Mercury specifically? Mercury is the kāraka for relatives (bandhu kāraka) when the fourth house is being analyzed from the perspective of relatives. Mercury is adaptive, relational, and represents the ability to connect with one's extended family.

Verse 5: The Multiple Karakas of the Fourth House

This verse provides an opportunity to enumerate the multiple karakas for different fourth-house significations:

Fourth House Signification Kāraka Planet
Relatives (bandhu) Mercury ☿
Mental happiness Moon ☽
Mother Moon ☽
Vehicles Venus ♀
Learning / education Mercury ☿
Land / property Mars ♂
House of residence Ketu 🐲
General comfort Moon ☽
Conjugal / marital happiness Venus ♀

[!IMPORTANT] There is no single kāraka for the 4th house — it depends on what aspect of the 4th house you are analyzing. When judging each specific 4th house matter, use the appropriate kāraka alongside the 4th lord.

General principle: Parashara gives one building, but there are many more buildings one can construct from the same building blocks. Any result assigned to a specific planet in Lagna (e.g., Mercury in Lagna for relatives) can be extended: if instead of Mercury in Lagna you see Venus in Lagna (or aspecting), you can apply the same logic for vehicles. If Saturn is strongly involved, it relates to servants/hard-working animals as property.

Verse 6: Fourth House Benefic-Occupied, Fourth Lord Exalted, Moon Strong

Sanskrit:

Mātṛsthāne śubha yute tadīśe soccharāśige. Kārake bala saṁyukte māturdīrghāyur ādiśet.

  • Mātṛsthāna = 4th house (mother's house)
  • Śubha yute = occupied by functional benefics
  • Soccharāśige = 4th lord in exaltation sign (su-uccha)
  • Kārake = Moon (kāraka for mother)
  • Dīrghāyur = long-lived

Conditions for mother's longevity:

  1. Functional benefic in the 4th house
  2. 4th lord in exaltation sign
  3. Moon (kāraka) is strong

Result: Mother will be long-lived.

[!NOTE] The three pillars being fortified simultaneously (4th house, 4th lord, kāraka = Moon) represent the maximum positive combination for any signification. This is the standard three-layer confirmation Parashara applies throughout BPHS.

Verse 7: Fourth Lord in Kendra, Venus in Kendra, Mercury in Exaltation

Sanskrit:

Sukhese kendra bhāvasthe tathā kendrasthite Bhṛguḥ. Śaśijāye soccharāśisthe mātuḥ pūrṇaṁ sukhaṁ vadet.

  • Bhṛgu = Venus; Śaśijāya = Mercury; Soccharāśistha = in exaltation sign (Mercury's exaltation = Virgo)

Conditions:

  • 4th lord in a kendra
  • Venus in a kendra
  • Mercury in exaltation (Virgo)

Result: Complete happiness from mother (mātuḥ pūrṇaṁ sukham).

Verse 8: Sun in 4th, Moon+Saturn in 9th, Mars in 11th — Cattle Wealth

Sanskrit:

Sukhe raviyute mande candre bhāgyagate sati. Lābhasthānagato bhaumo gomahiṣyādi lābhakṛt.

Conditions:

  • Sun in the 4th house
  • Moon and Saturn in the 9th house (bhāgya = fortune)
  • Mars in the 11th house

Result: Go (cows), mahiṣī (buffaloes), and similar cattle/animals as profitable property (ādi lābhakṛt).

Explanation:

  • 4th house = property; Sun = all living beings/animals in general
  • 9th house = fortune; Saturn = hard-working, lowly entities (servants, cattle)
  • Moon + Saturn in the 9th = fortune through Saturn-type entities = cows, buffaloes, hard-working animals
  • Mars in 11th = gains from such properties
  • These animals are like Saturn's entities — hardworking. Their hard work becomes the native's fortune (they are in the 9th house, not the 6th of your own labor)
Planet House Meaning
☀️ Sun 4th Animal-type property
☽ Moon + ♄ Saturn 9th Fortune through Saturnine (lowly/hardworking) entities
♂ Mars 11th Gains/profit from these

Verse 9: Fourth House in Mobile Sign + Fourth Lord in Mobile Sign

Sanskrit:

Cara-gṛha samāyukte sukhe tad-rāśi-nāyake. Ṣaṣṭhe jaye sthite bhaume naraḥ prāpto'ti mūkatām.

  • Cara-gṛha = mobile sign (cara rāśi = Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
  • Ṣaṣṭha = 6th; Jāya = 12th (vyaya)
  • Mūkatā = muteness, inability to speak

This verse discusses a combination that may affect speech:

  • 4th house is a mobile sign (i.e., Lagna is mobile → 4th is also mobile)
  • 4th lord is badly placed (in dusthana, per PVR's interpretation)
  • Mars is in a difficult position (12th house or causing loss)

PVR's interpretation: 4th house in mobile sign, 4th lord in 6th house (dusthana), Mars in 12th house → the person may be unable to speak (mute) or have severe speech impairment.

[!NOTE] The verse has multiple plausible interpretations (Santhanam and PVR differ). PVR's preferred reading: 4th house = mobile sign, 4th lord in 6th, Mars in 12th.

Why is the 4th house relevant for speech?

  • Primary house of speech = 2nd house
  • 3rd house = vitality (prāṇa) of the 2nd house (3rd from 2nd)
  • 4th house = the "3rd from the 2nd" house = vitality of the 2nd house
  • If the 4th house (= 3rd from 2nd) is in a mobile sign, the vitality is shaky and unfocused

[!IMPORTANT] Third from any house = vitality of that house; 8th from any house = longevity (vulnerability) of that house. This principle can be extended to any house. Mobile signs bring unfocused, erratic energy to that vitality. Fixed signs bring solidity. Dual signs are intermediate.

Example extended: If the 9th house (= 8th from 2nd) is badly placed with its lord afflicted, speech longevity (sustained ability to speak well throughout life) can be affected, even if the 2nd house itself is moderately strong.

[!TIP] Always apply combinations as modifiers, not determinants. The primary house (2nd for speech) is the determinant. Secondary factors (3rd, 8th from it) are modifiers. A bad modifier with a strong primary may only cause temporary setbacks.

💡 Key Teaching: Third House as Vitality of Second House

One of PVR's important pedagogical expansions in this class:

flowchart LR
    A["2nd House\n(Speech, Wealth)"] -->|"3rd from it ="| B["4th House\n= Vitality of Speech"]
    A -->|"8th from it ="| C["9th House\n= Longevity/Vulnerability of Speech"]
    B --> D{Sign type?}
    D -->|"Mobile sign"| E["Shaky, unfocused vitality"]
    D -->|"Fixed sign"| F["Solid, stable vitality"]
    D -->|"Dual sign"| G["Moderate, adaptable vitality"]

This principle generalizes:

  • 3rd from any house = vitality of that house
  • 8th from any house = longevity/vulnerability of that house
  • Affliction to the 3rd from a house weakens its vitality
  • Affliction to the 8th from a house shortens or threatens its longevity

🔮 Live Chart Analysis — Relocation Decision

Native (Speaker 6): Male, Aquarius Lagna, born September 1, 1955, 5:30 PM, Machilipatnam, India (81°8'E, 16°10'N).

Question: Wife works for a company relocating from Boston to North Carolina. Native must decide: should he also move to NC, or should they live separately while she tries to find another job?

Spouse's Career (from Navamsa)

Lagna in Navamsa = Aquarius. Examining from the Navamsa Lagna and L7 (7th Arudha = Upapada area, spouse's Arudha Lagna-equivalent).

Current Dasha: Saturn Maha Dasha, Jupiter Antardasha (running since January of that year).

Factor Analysis
Jupiter = 2nd and 11th lord from L7 Wealth and gains for spouse
Jupiter in L7 as Lagna Financial prosperity
Bhoga from Saturn: 11th from Jupiter Sagittarius = 8th house? → gains
Mercury Maha Dasha (coming ~2009) Mercury = 5th lord (benefic) + 8th lord
Mercury in 2nd house from Navamsa Lagna Artha-Trikona position
Mercury is dispositor of both 10th lords (Mars and Ketu) Key career planet
Mercury debilitated + 8th lord afflicting Lagna lord Some setbacks possible
Viparita Raja Yoga (8th lord in 6th) Eventual success after struggle
Dhīmanta Yoga (5th lord in 6th) Hard work but very productive use of abilities

[!NOTE] Mercury Maha Dasha (17 years, 2009–2026): Good for career overall, with possible health concerns (8th lord afflicting Lagna lord in Navamsa). Spouse's career will be fine regardless of relocation.

Native's Relocation (from Chaturthamsa D-4)

D-4 Lagna: Aquarius. Jupiter = 2nd and 11th lord for Aquarius → functional malefic (11th lord).

Factor Analysis
Jupiter (current Antardasha lord) in D-4 In 3rd house = 12th from 4th house = loss/change of residence
Bhoga from Saturn (Dasha lord): count 11 from Jupiter Falls in 12th house (Capricorn) = foreign/faraway place
12th house bhoga Moving to a distant place
A4 (Arudha of 4th house) in Leo; Jupiter in 9th from A4 Jupiter in Badhaka sthana from A4; 8th lord = instability of house
Mercury Maha Dasha in D-4 Mercury = 5th and 8th lord; Sarala Yoga (8th lord in 8th, exalted)
Mercury exalted in 8th in D-4 Very happy state of mind with respect to house
Mercury in 2nd from A4 Raja Yoga from Arudha (Jaimini: Mercury in 2nd from Arudha Lagna = royal status)
Saturn in 12th from A4 Saturn in 12th from any Arudha = auspicious for that Arudha

Verdict: A move to North Carolina is highly favored. Jupiter's Antardasha shows the move will happen; it may be seen by some as a "loss" (benefic in 6th from Arudha Lagna). But Mercury Maha Dasha (17 years from 2009) strongly supports happiness and stability in the new home.

Career Outlook (from Dasamsa D-10)

D-10 Lagna: Aquarius (Lagna lord Saturn in 4th house — acceptable placement).

Factor Analysis
Jupiter Antardasha in D-10 In 9th house (Badhaka for Aquarius Lagna = fixed sign → 9th = Badhaka sthana)
Jupiter in Badhaka sthana Can give change of job during Antardasha
Jupiter + Ketu exchange; Ketu = 10th lord Jupiter takes on Ketu's results = 10th lord in 9th = trine = good for career
Bhoga of Saturn-Jupiter in D-10 2nd house from Arudha Lagna = financial gains
Mercury Maha Dasha in D-10 (2009–2026) 5th and 8th lord; Viparita Raja Yoga + Dhīmanta Yoga
Mercury in 6th house (D-10) Service-oriented, hard-working, productive period
A3 and A7 influenced by Mercury Contract work, travel, extensive communication with people

[!NOTE] Badhakasthana rule:

  • Mobile (cara) Lagna → 11th house is Badhaka sthana
  • Fixed (sthira) Lagna → 9th house is Badhaka sthana
  • Dual (dvandva) Lagna → 7th house is Badhaka sthana

Annual Tithi Pravesha Analysis

Year start: September 7, 2006, 7:18 AM IST, Machilipatnam.

Year ruler (Hora lord): Mars.

Mars in Lagna of the Tithi Pravesha chart as 3rd and 8th lord → shows irritability and stress during the year, especially:

  • June period (Mars Antardasha within Tithi Pravesha) — stress and irritability likely
  • April 13 – June 1 — favorable for career new beginnings (Sun-Moon-Lagna lord combination)
  • A9 with A8 (Bhāgya Arudha with Mṛtyupada) — sudden unexpected events relating to fortune; the native may receive an unexpected job offer
  • Jupiter + Ketu in 5th in D-10 of Tithi Pravesha → Raja Yoga from 4th lord + 5th lord
  • Best periods in next year: September 26 – December 2 (Jupiter Antardasha) and March 29 – April 19 (Sun Antardasha)

Marital note: Some quarrel or disharmony with wife possible during the year (8th lord in 7th + Lagna afflicted by Sun and Ketu in Navamsa).

Spiritual Remedies

For stress and irritability (Mars):

Pray to Lord Narasimha — Mars in a Mercurial sign corresponds to the Vishnu avatāra related to Mercury signs (Narasimha).

For general protection during major life changes:

Worship the Pāla Devatā (protective deity) derived from the Ātma Kāraka or Amātya Kāraka.

Pāla Devatā analysis:

  • Amātya Kāraka = Saturn (in Aries in Navamsa)
  • 6th from Saturn in Navamsa = Virgo = Ketu occupies it
  • Ketu in a Mercurial sign → Mūlādhāra chakra Ganesha
  • Deity: Ganesha (Mahāgaṇapati)

Perform Mahāgaṇapati homam. Recite Amṛta Keśaṁ (Ganesha mantra) daily for the next 6–7 months.

For career (Mercury in D-10 in Ishana Amsa):

  • Mercury = Jyotirlinga Mallikarjuna (Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh)
  • Mantra: Om Namaḥ Śivāya Namo Mallikārjunāya
  • Place picture of Srisailam Lingam in puja room and chant daily

[!TIP] On spiritual hygiene for astrologers: When studying negative subjects (Marakas, death charts, criminal horoscopes), negative energy accumulates in the mind. PVR advises: after such study, read a spiritual chart or do something uplifting to cleanse the mental field. Thoughts are shaped by what one focuses on.
