🛡️ Chapter 10 — Ariṣṭa Bhaṅga Adhyāya
This is a short chapter of nine verses — completed in a single class sitting. Its subject is not remedies (upāya), but antidotes (bhaṅga): intrinsic planetary combinations that automatically cancel the evils described in Chapter 9.
[!NOTE] "This is not really remedy. This is basically antidote. There are some combinations that nullify the evils."
📖 Verse 1 — Introduction
Sanskrit: Itthi ariṣṭam mayāproktaṃ tad bhaṅgaś cāpi kathyate. Yatsamālokyaṃ jātanāṃ ariṣṭaṃ vaded budhaḥ.
"Just as I have described all the evils, I will now tell you those combinations that cancel the evils — so that a learned man, by carefully analyzing the birth chart, can declare whether there is evil or no evil."
♃☿♀ Verse 2 — Any Natural Benefic in a Kendra
Sanskrit: Ekoapi jñāya ārya śukrāṇāṃ lagnāt kendra gato yadi. Ariṣṭaṃ nikhilaṃ hanti timiraṃ bhāskaro yathā.
| Planet | Identity |
|---|---|
| Jñāya (Mercury) | ☿ |
| Ārya (Jupiter) | ♃ |
| Śukra (Venus) | ♀ |
Rule: Even one of these three natural benefics, placed in any kendra (quadrant: 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) from the Lagna, destroys all evil combinations.
Simile: Just as the Sun destroys darkness, these benefics in kendras destroy the dark results (ariṣṭa) in the chart.
[!IMPORTANT] The verse does not specify functional benefic — it applies to natural benefics regardless of their functional agenda for that Lagna.
♃ Verse 3 — Strong Jupiter in Lagna
Sanskrit: Ekaeva balī jīvo lagnastho ariṣṭa sañcayaṃ hanti pāpakṣayaṃ bhaktyā praṇamāya śūlinaḥ.
Rule: Even a single strong Jupiter placed in the Lagna destroys a collection of multiple evil combinations.
Simile: Just as prostrating before Śiva (Śūlī) with devotion destroys all sins, Jupiter in Lagna destroys a heap of arishtas.
"Jupiter in Lagna destroys not just one evil combination but a multiple collection. He's basically being compared to Shiva."
Key contrast with Verse 2:
- Verse 2 → Any one of three natural benefics in any kendra
- Verse 3 → Jupiter specifically in the Lagna, even alone and without support
🏠 Verse 4 — Lagna Lord in a Kendra (Strong)
Sanskrit: Ekaeva vilagnēśaḥ kendra saṃstho balānvitaḥ. Ariṣṭaṃ nikhilaṃ hanti pināki tripuram yathā.
Rule: The Lagna lord, well-placed and strong in a kendra, destroys all evils.
Key conditions:
- Kendra saṃstha (with saṃ- prefix) = not merely present in a quadrant, but well-placed there (not debilitated, not in an inimical sign)
- Balānvita = possessing strength
Simile: As Śiva (Pinākin) destroyed the three cities (Tripuram), the Lagna lord in a kendra destroys evil.

C[Verse 3] --> D[Highest Natural Benefic ♃\nin Lagna specifically]
E[Verse 4] --> F[Highest Functional Benefic\nLagna Lord, well-placed + strong\nin any Kendra]
"The previous verse covered the highest natural benefic having association with Lagna. This verse covers the highest functional benefic of the chart being well-placed."
☽ Verse 5 — Paksha & Time of Birth with Benefic Aspect
Sanskrit: Śukla pakṣe kṣapā janma lagne saumya nirīkṣite. Viprītaṃ kṛṣṇa pakṣe tathā ariṣṭa vināśanam.
| Birth Paksha | Optimal Time | Lagna Aspect |
|---|---|---|
| Śukla Pakṣa (waxing Moon) | Night (kṣapā) | Aspected by benefic |
| Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa (waning Moon) | Daytime | Aspected by malefic |
Effect: Either of these conditions acts as an antidote to all evils.
Interpretation: The waxing Moon (bright, growing) is complemented by the cooling quality of night and benefic aspect. The waning Moon (dark, reducing) is complemented by the energizing Sun's day and the tempering quality of malefic aspects.
☀️ Verse 6 — Sun in 12th for Libra Lagna (Bādhaka in 12th)
Sanskrit: Jayasthāne yadā sūryaḥ sthūla lagnetu jāyate. Jīveṣṭa śata varṣāṇi dīrghāyur balako bhavet.
Combination: Sun in the 12th house for Libra Lagna (Sthūla Lagna).
Why only Libra?
- Libra is a sthira (fixed) sign. For fixed Lagnas, the 11th lord is Bādhakeśa (obstacle-lord).
- For Libra Lagna → 11th house = Leo → Bādhakeśa = Sun
- Bādhakeśa in the 12th house = obstacles destroyed, evil neutralized
Effect: Long life — up to 100 years (śata varṣāṇi).
[!TIP] This principle generalizes: Bādhakeśa in the 12th house is very good — it removes the source of obstructions from the chart. Only specifically stated here for Libra, but the logic extends.
♃♂ Verse 7 — Jupiter-Mars Conjunction or Jupiter Aspecting Mars
Sanskrit: Guru bhaumo yadā yukto guru dṛṣṭo athavā kujaḥ. Atvariṣṭaṃ aśeṣaṃ ca jananyāḥ śubhakṛd bhavet.
Conditions (either one):
- Jupiter and Mars are conjoined (in the same house)
- Jupiter aspects Mars
Effect: All great evils are destroyed, and this combination becomes specifically auspicious for mother (jananyāḥ śubhakṛd).
♂ Verse 8 — Malefic in 4th or 10th with Subha Kartarī
Sanskrit: Chaturthadaśame pāpaḥ saumya madhye yadā bhavet. Pitṛ saukhya karo yogaḥ śubhaiḥ kendra trikona gaiḥ.
Combination:
- A malefic planet is in the 4th or 10th house
- That malefic is hemmed by benefics (subha kartarī = benefics in the houses immediately on both sides)
- Additional benefics are in kendras and trikoṇas
Effect: Auspicious yoga for father (pitṛ saukhya kara).
Mechanism — reading from the 9th house as father's Lagna:
| 9th-from-Lagna = Father's Lagna | Analysis |
|---|---|
| Malefic in 4th from Lagna = 8th from father's Lagna | Longevity threat for father |
| But 3rd and 5th (from Lagna) have benefics | 1st & 3rd from father's Lagna protected |
| Malefic in 10th from Lagna = 2nd from father's Lagna | Māraka position |
| But 9th and 11th (from Lagna) have benefics | Fortune & 3rd from father's Lagna protected |
"The Subha Kartari is checking the malefic from both sides — so the evil it was going to give to father is offset."
Can this be extended to mother? Yes — by logic: take 4th as mother's Lagna; if 5th and 3rd from Lagna (i.e., 2nd and 12th from mother's Lagna) have benefics while a malefic is in the 4th, similar protection for mother can be inferred.
🌀 Verse 9 — General Subha Kartarī Rule
Sanskrit: Saumya antarāgataiḥ pāpaiḥ śubhaiḥ kendra trikoṇa gaiḥ. Sājo nāśayate ariṣṭaṃ tad bhavoktaṃ phalaṃ na tat.
Generalization of Verse 8 — applicable to any house:
If any malefic planet has subha kartarī (benefics on both sides) AND benefics occupy kendras and trikonas, then whatever evil results were expected from that malefic in that house will not occur.
Example: Rahu in the 10th (career problems feared) — if Venus is in the 9th and Jupiter is in the 11th → no career problems from Rahu.
Analogy from the teacher:
"It's like — somebody hit me and I took medicine to cure myself. But if nobody hits me and I still eat the tonic, I'll be even stronger."
| Scenario | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Malefic in house + Subha Kartarī | Evil from malefic cancelled |
| Empty house + Subha Kartarī | Even better |
| Benefic in house + Subha Kartarī | Best outcome |
🏠 Chapter 11 — Bhāva Viveka Adhyāya (Meanings of Houses)
Maitreya requests: "Having heard the evils and their antidotes, please now tell me what results should be seen from each house."

| 12th | Vyaya Bhāva | Expenditure (yayam), secret plans of enemies (vairi vṛttānta), one's own end (death or mokṣa) | — |
[!NOTE] Father in 10th vs. 9th: Parāśara mentions father under the 10th house here but will elaborate elsewhere. The teacher advises continuing to use the 9th house for father and reconciling later when more Parāśara passages are available.
[!NOTE] Enemy Houses: Parāśara distributes enemy-related matters across three houses:
- 2nd — enemies relating to wealth/litigation
- 6th — general rivalries and enmities
- 8th — life-threatening enmities, war
[!NOTE] Debts in 10th house is surprising — conventionally seen from 6th and 8th. "We'll reconcile later."
[!NOTE] Loss of eyesight in 7th house is new — conventionally sight is from the 2nd house (eyes) and 10th (dharma of seeing, 9th from 2nd). Why 7th? Under consideration — the teacher promised to share thoughts in the next class.

📐 Three Modifiers — Evaluating Any House
After cataloguing the 12 houses, Parāśara gives three modifier rules applicable to any house:
Modifier 1 — What Makes a House Flourish
Sanskrit: Yo yo śubhair yuto dṛṣṭo bhāvo vā patidṛṣṭi yuk...
A house flourishes if it has:
- Benefic planets occupying it (subhair yuta)
- Benefic planets aspecting it (subhair dṛṣṭa)
- The lord of the house occupying it or aspecting it (pati dṛṣṭi)
Additional condition:
- Lord of the house is in the 10th house from that house in yuva, kumāra, or vṛddha avasthā (middle three of the five avasthas — not bāla or mṛta)
"Tenth house from any house is how that house is executed. If the lord is there, that is a good thing."
Two interpretations of "lord in 10th":
- Lord of the house in the 10th house from the Lagna (absolute 10th)
- Lord of the house in the 10th sign from its own house (relative 10th)
Both are plausible — apply both and observe.
Modifier 2 — What Destroys a House
Sanskrit: Yad yad bhāvapatiḥ naṣṭas trikeshādyaiḥ sca saṃyutaḥ...
A house suffers if:
- Its lord is placed in an evil house (3rd, 6th, 8th, or 12th — trikeśa etc.)
- The lord does not aspect the house
- The lord is in supta, vṛddha, or mṛta avasthā — afflicted or extremely weak
→ Bhavasya phalaṃ naṣṭaṃ vadet dhruvam — "Declare without doubt that the results of that house are destroyed."
Modifier 3 — Summary
Balābala vivēkena kaṣṭaṃ vā sukhaṃ ādhiṣet — "By wise reckoning of strength and weakness, predict either trouble or happiness for that house."
The entire evaluative framework is codified in these three modifiers. All subjective analysis done so far rests on this foundation.
💬 Parivartana & Exchange — Q&A
Student question: If the 5th lord (Jupiter, also 9th lord for Aries Lagna) is in the 5th house and exchanges with the 12th lord (Sun), does Jupiter in the 5th house give results of both the 9th lord and 12th lord?
Answer:
- In a Parivartana, only the exchanged house results are swapped.
- Jupiter acts as though he is the 5th lord placed in the 5th house (not the 12th house).
- He does not forget he is also the 9th lord — he retains that identity.
- Sun in the 12th acts as though he is the 12th lord.
- Only the house-results are exchanged, not the full planetary identity.
[!IMPORTANT] A Parivartana does not activate conditional Dasas. If a Dasha condition requires the 10th lord to be in the 10th house, a Parivartana bringing another planet "effectively" to the 10th does not count.
