🕉️ Class 88 — Chart Analysis: Mental Afflictions, Trimsamsa, Gemstones & Remedies
A deeply analytical class focused on two live cases of mental disorders — one congenital (child with cognitive disability) and one adolescent (OCD / obsessive-compulsive disorder) — examined through Rasi, Trimsamsa (D30), Shashtamsa (D6), and Vimshamsa. The class also includes a rich teaching on gemstone theory (strengthening vs. accentuating), L9 technique for reading the father, and remedial astrology.

🗓️ Opening — New Class Time Muhurta
The class relocated to a new time slot. The moment of relocation:
- Tithi: Ashvaja Krishna Ekadashi
- Nakshatra: Magha
- Lagna: Mesha (Aries)
- Yoga: Shubha Yoga
- Jupiter and Mercury aspecting the Lagna closely — Raja Yoga between Lagna Lord and 9th Lord
"You have chosen a good Muhurta. Except that because it is Mesha Lagna aspected by Mars, there could be a change soon (Chara rasi — changeable quality)."
🧠 Case 1 — Congenital Cognitive Disability
Data: February 6, 2003, 11:34 PM, New Brunswick, New Jersey Condition: Cognitive disability / mental retardation (present from birth; noticed ~8–9 months)
Initial Observation (Students)
In D6 (Shashtamsa): Moon conjunct Saturn → found at 13°30. Not present in Rasi.
[!IMPORTANT] Saturn + Moon in Trimsamsa and/or D6 indicates mental affliction, but it is not specific enough to distinguish between depression, autism, schizophrenia, or cognitive disability. You need additional indicators.

"In mentally retarded persons, you find not only Moon, but also Mercury to be very badly afflicted. Mercury is your learning ability — how you adapt to the surroundings, how you draw conclusions by experimenting."
📚 Mercury as the Learning Planet
A child grows up, presses things, pushes things, observes what happens — that entire process of learning from experience is Mercury. If Mercury is weak, the child cannot learn from observation and feedback.
Mental retardation = disconnected intelligence not reaching the mind = Mercury (learning) + Moon (mind) both weak
The problem at the mental level is only the symptom — the root cause is Mercury's inability to connect intelligence to experience.
🔬 Trimsamsa Analysis — Key Principles
[!IMPORTANT] In Trimsamsa (D30), Rahu and Ketu are the most important planets to watch. They show the biggest, hardest-to-overcome weaknesses.
Tattva / Element associations in Trimsamsa
| Element | Tattva | Governing | What weakness shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jala (water) | Venusian signs | Clarity, harmony, mixing of elements | Emotional/mental instability |
| Akasha (ether) | Jupiterian signs | Overall spiritual protection | Worst affliction if Rahu/Ketu here |
| Agni (fire) | Martian signs | Energy, drive | |
| Vayu (air) | Saturnine signs | Movement | |
| Prithvi (earth) | Mercurian signs | Stability |
Case 1 Trimsamsa weaknesses:
| Planet | Position | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | Debilitated + Gandanta | Mind afflicted at root |
| Saturn | Retrograde — with Moon | Debilitating the mind |
| Ketu | 8th house — dispositor of Moon+Saturn | Controls the affliction |
| Mercury | Papakartari Yoga (Saturn one side, Rahu-Ketu other) + Aspected by Mars + Rahu | Learning faculty severely afflicted |
| Mercury | 8th lord in Badhaka sthana | Inexplicable, persistent problems |
| Rahu | 8th house — causing Papakartari on Mercury |
"Rahu and Ketu... the main planets that you should watch out for in Trimsamsa. They show the biggest weakness that is tough to overcome."
Why Multiple Malefics on One Planet Is Serious
[!WARNING] When two or three natural malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) all afflict a single planet or house, they all want to do something to that house. When their dasha comes, they will deliver those results.
📅 Dasha Prognosis — Case 1
Child's Dasha sequence (from birth): Mercury → Ketu → Venus
| Dasha | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Mercury (from birth) | 8th lord in Badhaka sthana; problem likely started here even before noticed |
| Ketu (current) | 8th lord; with A6 (tangible disease arudha) in Rasi; Mars+Ketu+Mandi+Gulika all in 2nd house (Maraka cluster). Problem manifesting fully. |
| Ketu–Rahu Antardasha | Worst sub-period — Rahu in 8th house with Saturn in Rasi; no improvement expected |
| Ketu–Jupiter Antardasha | Best window: Sep 2007 – Aug 2008. Jupiter in Rasi: exalted + retrograde 6th lord = reversal effect toward Harsha Yoga. Jupiter+Moon Parivarthana helps. |
| Ketu–Saturn, Ketu–Mercury | Not promising |
| Venus Dasha (from 2010) | Most hopeful period. Lagna lord, no 6th/8th links. In Trimsamsa: Bhadaka lord in Lagna but no 8th/6th other links. Girl may make significant progress toward normalcy. |
"The entire seven years of Ketu Dasha looks terrible overall. Venus Dasha can really bring relief — the girl can start behaving in a much more normal way."
Exalted Retrograde Planet Rule
| Planet | Condition | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 9th lord, exalted + retrograde | Like debilitated 9th lord | Inauspicious — bad retrograde |
| 6th lord, exalted + retrograde | Like debilitated 6th lord | Auspicious — good reversal (Harsha Yoga potential) |
⚡️ Gandanta — Compounding Factor
Moon in very deep Gandanta (junction of water-fire signs = Pisces/Aries, Cancer/Leo, or Scorpio/Sagittarius, at the exact junction).
[!WARNING] If Moon is in deep Gandanta AND afflicted by Saturn in both D6 and D30, the danger is multiplied. The Gandanta mark is permanent and applies irrespective of any Parivarthana or yoga elsewhere.
When Parivarthana is triggered: The Parivarthana gives results, but does NOT alter the Gandanta mark on the original planet. The Gandanta results of Moon are given through the Dashas of planets in the Gandanta-afflicting pattern.
Remedy: Gandanta Dosha Shanti should ideally be performed when the baby is young. Can still be done later.
🎓 D24 (Siddhamsa) — Educational Prospects
| Feature | Detail | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Saturn in Lagna (inimical sign) | Lagna not strong |
| Lagna Lord | Two lords — Saturn in 4th Kendara (strong), Rahu in 2nd with Raj Yoga | Good Raj Yoga |
| 4th house (primary education) | Has A6 and A8 | Obstacles, problems in primary learning |
| Saturn (Lagna lord) in 4th | Retrograde; 6th+8th karaka — acts more as disease indicator when with bad Arudhas | Problems in early education |
| Venus (4th lord) | Exalted in 11th house | Very good 4th lord position |
| Venus Dasha (from 2010) | 4th lord exalted → education accelerates | |
| Mars | 10th lord in 9th house | Higher professional/technical education possible |
"Even though this girl may start off very poorly, she may do reasonably well at the end of the day."
💎 Gemstone Theory — Accentuation vs. Strengthening
[!IMPORTANT] Wearing a gemstone does NOT strengthen the planet's benefic qualities. It accentuates ALL results of that planet — good and bad alike.
flowchart LR
G["Gemstone worn / owned\n(even just possessed)"] --> A["Accentuates ALL results\nof the corresponding planet"]
A --> POS["If planet's agenda is good\n→ good results amplified"]
A --> NEG["If planet's agenda is bad\n→ bad results amplified"]
Case: Engagement broken by gemstone gifts
A woman with Pisces Lagna was gifted at engagement:
- Ruby necklace (Sun's gem = 6th lord for Pisces)
- Diamond necklace (Venus's gem = 3rd and 8th lord for Pisces)
Both gems accentuated 6th and 8th lord energies → engagement broke.
"She was probably very excited about those two necklaces. Within a few days her engagement broke."
Key insight: Even if not worn daily, if you possess the gem and have mental association with it, it gives its results. Mental association is sufficient.
Case: Diamond ring for a young man going astray
A young man (Pisces Lagna, Venus = 8th lord in 8th house — in Libra, own sign) was given a diamond ring on the index finger (moksha finger) by a Swami. He immediately turned to the spiritual path.
Here, strengthening the 8th lord = strengthening the tapasvi yoga = excellent result.
Conclusion: There is NO thumb rule that 8th lord's gem is always bad. It depends entirely on what that planet's agenda is in that particular chart.

A --> X["Mixed agenda"] --> C["Case-by-case judgment\nbased on specific goal"]
🔍 L9 Technique — Reading the Father
Principle: To understand the father as a person (his intelligence, attitude, beliefs) — use L9 (the Arudha of the 9th house) as Lagna.
| Reference | What it shows |
|---|---|
| 9th house as Lagna | Role father plays in child's life; guidance given |
| A9 | Tangible religious/dharmic connection (visible to world) |
| L9 as Lagna | Father as an independent intelligent being — his attitudes, beliefs |
Case: Father in Case 1 — "Doesn't believe in God"
L9 calculation: 9th house = Virgo. 9th lord Mercury in Scorpio. 11th from Mercury = Cancer. L9 = Cancer.
Taking Cancer as Lagna:
| House (from Cancer) | Planets | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 3rd | Rahu + aspected by Mars | Extremely stubborn / adamant |
| 5th | Mercury in Martian sign | Very intelligent; quick, fiery mind |
| 7th | Capricorn; aspected by Mars (8th), Rahu (5th), Saturn | Poor social relations — dry, Saturnine |
| 9th (religion) | Badhaka lord present + Rahu aspecting it; 9th lord Jupiter retrograde in enemy sign in 8th | Does not believe in God |
"Badhaka Lord in the ninth house = breaking idols. Not literally — means doesn't believe in God. Rahu (8th lord, materialism) aspecting this = even worse."
Stubbornness indicator
- Rahu in 3rd + Mars aspecting 3rd → "Very, very stubborn"
- Rahu in Lagna alone is not sufficient — 3rd house must be fortified for true stubbornness
☠️ Maraka in Own Sign — Ketu Analysis
General question: If Ketu is in its own sign (e.g., Vrischika) and is also a Maraka (2nd or 7th lord), does being in own sign help?
Ketu in own sign = stronger Maraka. It becomes a "killer who is really strong." Own sign does not dilute the Maraka quality — it amplifies Ketu's natural power, including as a Maraka.
Similarly discussed: Vargottama Maraka Saturn (for Dhanu Lagna) — still a Maraka, but with Raja Yoga potential from Arudha Lagna (12th from AL = Raja Yoga).
😰 Case 2 — OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)
Data: December 15, 1988, 5:42:38 PM, Framingham, Massachusetts Condition: OCD — obsessive hand-washing, compulsive repetitive behaviors; hereditary (maternal grandfather had depression/mental illness) Bouts: 1999, 2002–2003 (severe); 2004 (better); 2006 (recurring) Current: On medication; father is a doctor
PVR observation: Class was being held at the time when Moon was with Ketu — and both cases of mental disorder were being analyzed.
Key Indicators
| Planet | Rasi Chart | Trimsamsa |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | 8th lord + with Rahu | With Sun (exalted, functional malefic) + aspected by Mars |
| Mercury (Lagna lord) | In Maraka sthana (7th) afflicted by Sun + Saturn (both in Badhaka sthana) | Aspected by 2 malefics; Papakartari |
| Sun | Very deep Gandanta (Moola nakshatra, 0.5° Sagittarius) | Aspecting Moon — exalted malefic on Moon |
| Saturn | 8th lord in Badhaka sthana | Functional + natural malefic |
[!WARNING] Sun in very deep Gandanta — whenever any planet in deep Gandanta afflicts another planet in Trimsamsa, the weakness caused is multiplied by the Gandanta.
Differential Diagnosis
| Afflicting pattern on Moon | Likely manifestation |
|---|---|
| Moon + Saturn | Depression, slowed mind, sadness |
| Moon + Rahu / Ketu | Anxiety, detachment, addictive tendencies |
| Moon + Mars | Aggression, anger, fighting |
| Moon + Sun + Mars (this case) | Obsessive over-control — authoritative impulse turned inward against the mind |
"OCD is basically some problem with extra control — over-control of the mind in a particular way. That is possible with Sun. Sun is the king. Anger at mother shown by Mars aspect on Moon (Moon = mother)."
Dasha Correlation
| Period | Dasha/Antardasha | Events |
|---|---|---|
| Problem seed | Rahu (Vimsaptamsa Dasha — Rahu period) | Rahu with Moon; Moon with 8th lord connection |
| 1999, 2002–2003 | Sun–Sun (Sandhya Dasha) | Sun deep Gandanta — very bad |
| 2004 | Better — some relief Antardasha | |
| Now (2006) | Sun Dasha (Vimsaptamsa) | Recurring — Sun is problem planet |
📅 Dasha Prognosis — Case 2
| Dasha | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Sun (current) | Problem planet — deep Gandanta. No full cure expected. Some Antardashas better, some worse. |
| Moon | 8th lord with Rahu + afflicted by Sun/Mars in Trimsamsa. Unlikely full cure. |
| Mars | 6th+8th lord; aspecting Moon in Trimsamsa. Problem may increase; material manifestation of problem and aggression can rise. |
| Mercury (Lagna lord + 4th lord) | Mercury is the one who wants to cure him. But he is very weak (in Maraka sthana). |
"Until 2029 (Mercury Dasha), there is no full cure for this person. He has to be on medication, keep controlling his emotions. One problem may go, another similar problem may come."
🙏 Remedies — Case 2
What to suggest (mother can do; son can do simple practices):
| Remedy | Rationale |
|---|---|
| Sri Rama, Rama, Rama japam | Sun + Mercury + Saturn → Rama covers Sun+Mercury (Vishnu avatar); manageable for non-religious person |
| Sri Rudram (chanting or listening) | Sun in Gandanta; Saturn affliction; Namakam+Chamakam — extremely auspicious for Gandanta planets and health problems |
| Mother prays to Lakshmi Narayana | Lagna lord Venus + Mercury are together; Vishnu (Mercury) and Lakshmi (Venus) |
[!TIP] For someone who doesn't believe in religion but believes in God: suggest Sri Rama, Rama, Rama — one mala daily or simply thinking the name mentally whenever free. Simple, effective.
Vimshamsa — Prospects for Religiousness
- A9 (Dharma Pada) in Vimshamsa is in Badhakasthana
- A8 (Mrityupada) is with A9 — tangible dharma is with death-energy
- 9th lord Mercury in 8th from 9th in Vimshamsa — very weak
- Lagna lord Venus with Jupiter and Saturn — some hope when those dashas come
"This is not the chart of somebody who may turn into a religious person later. There is some hope when Venus and Jupiter Dashas come."
