"Tithi nakṣatra lagnānāṁ gaṇḍāntaṁ trividhaṁ smṛtam। Janma yātrā vivāhādau bhavet tan nidhana pradaṁ॥"

Translation:

• Tithi nakṣatra lagnānāṁ — for the Tithi, Nakshatra and Lagna
• Gaṇḍāntaṁ trividhaṁ smṛtam — three kinds of Gandanta are remembered/declared
• Janma yātrā vivāhādau — at the time of birth, travel, marriage, etc.
• Bhavet tan nidhana pradaṁ — that becomes the giver of death / inauspiciousness

[!NOTE] "Adau" (etc.) extends the rule to any important event. Gandanta applies equally to natal charts (janma chakra) and electional charts (Muhurta).

What are Tithi Gandantas?

There are three Tithi Gandanta junctions, corresponding to Panchanga group boundaries:

• Total window: 4 ghatikas = 4 × 24 min = 96 minutes (±48 min on each side of the border)
• Applies in both Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha

What are Nakshatra Gandantas?

Three water–fire Nakshatra border pairs at the zodiac's fire-sign entries:

• Daśra = Ashwini; Sarpa = Ashlesha; Śakra (Indra's nakshatra) = Jyeshta; Mūla = Mula
