Sutra: If Rahu and Mars are in the 4th or 5th from Svamsa, tuberculosis (kshaya roga) is indicated.

[!IMPORTANT] Both Rahu and Mars must be present for TB — not just one alone. Mars in 4th/5th gives a different disease (see next section). Moon's aspect on this Rahu-Mars combination makes the disease inevitable.

[!NOTE] The Moon represents the sustenance force of the body. When Moon aspects a malefic disease combination, it "feeds" the affliction, confirming its manifestation — just as Moon's aspect on Khemadruma Yoga confirms poverty.

Why Rahu + Mars = TB?

• Mars = Agni tattva (fire element); heat; inflammation; also rules blood and marrow
• Rahu = air, expansiveness, lungs, the subtle/gaseous
• TB = an inflammatory infection of the lungs — the combination of Mars fire + Rahu lung/air is the Jyotisha basis

[!TIP] For disease analysis from Navamsa, use Rashi Drishti (sign aspects), not Graha Drishti (planetary aspects). Graha Drishti shows desire — a planet would need to "desire" giving you TB, which is nonsensical. For final detail go to D-6 (Shashthamsa) or D-30 (Trimsamsa).

2. 🔥 Sutra 1.2.93 — Ulcers & Boils (Mars Alone)

Sutra: Mars alone in the 4th or 5th from Svamsa indicates boils, ulcers, cuts, and gangrene.

Mechanism (Ayurvedic)

Pitta predomination from strong Mars:

• Ulcers arise when gastric acids (Pitta-dominated) erode the stomach lining — a direct Agni tattva excess
• Boils, cuts, and inflammatory skin eruptions all reflect unmanaged Pitta
• In a positive chart context, this same Mars gives physical courage, energy, and speed of action

3. 🦠 Sutra 1.2.94 — Glandular & Waterborne Diseases (Ketu)

Sutra: Ketu in the 4th or 5th from Svamsa indicates glandular ailments (e.g., thyroid) or waterborne diseases (e.g., dysentery, typhoid).

Why Ketu → Glandular / Waterborne?

• Ketu = co-ruler of Scorpio (Jala tattva); stagnant water (gutters, swamps, marshes)
• Scorpio is Sthira (fixed) → stagnation of water → diseases from stagnant/contaminated water
• Ketu = hidden, subtle → glandular dysfunction (thyroid etc.) is subtle and often hidden
• The Scorpio-Ketu link to Jala tattva connects to waterborne pathogens

[!NOTE] A classroom discussion clarified the nature of Scorpio water: Cancer = movable (rivers, flowing water), Pisces = dual (flowing and still), Scorpio = Sthira (fixed/stagnant = gutters, swamps, ponds infested with mosquitoes). Waterborne diseases arise from stagnant rather than flowing water.

Sutra: Rahu and Gulika in the 4th or 5th from Svamsa indicate affliction from dangerous poison.

Gulika Explained

[!IMPORTANT] During Gulika's active periods, the native must "drink the poison" — meaning they suffer from toxic substances, toxic environments, or people who poison them (literally or figuratively).

Modifying Planets (per commentary)

[!NOTE] Parashara gives a broader interpretation: Rahu + Gulika in 4th/5th can equally indicate a doctor capable of handling deadly poisons as it can indicate a person who consumes them. Always check: is the combination benefically aspected (→ healer) or malefically aspected (→ victim/dealer)?

Addiction Indicators

[!TIP] Saints can also have Saturn afflicting Moon — this is one of the key ingredients of Pravarajya Yoga (renunciation). The same planet that can drive one to alcohol can drive another to God's name; circumstances and other chart factors determine which direction manifests.

Jaimini gives specific career/ability indicators based on single planets in the 5th from Svamsa (or Navamsa Lagna).

Modern Equivalents

[!NOTE] Desha Kala Patra ("place, time, person") must always be applied. A Mars in 5th for a person born in modern India most likely gives interest in logic, execution, and assertiveness — not sword fighting. In conflict zones, the ancient interpretation may still apply.

[!TIP] Ketu is synonymous with miniaturization — the smaller the device, the more Ketu is involved. Integrated circuits, nano-technology, and precision instruments are all Ketu's domain. Rahu is the opposite — large scale, mass production, bulk.

These sutras list the intellectual and literary talents indicated by specific planets in the 1st or 5th from Svamsa (with extensions to 2nd and 9th).

Author & Literary Talent Table

[!NOTE] Jupiter in Svamsa or 5th gives genius and vast knowledge but not eloquence. The person knows deeply but may not speak beautifully. Venus gives the eloquent speaker and critic. Moon gives the singer. This is why the greatest scholars are not always the best communicators.

Differentiation by House

[!TIP] Ramanujan (the great mathematician) is an ideal example for Ketu in the 1st or 5th: the intuitive-mathematical genius that bypasses the need for formal proof — answers simply "arrive." Verify his chart for Ketu placement in trines.

Moon → Singing Connection

Moon in 1st or 5th → Sankhya Yoga philosophy + music/singing. The Sankhya connection is significant: Sankhya underlies Ayurveda (the three gunas, Vata/Pitta/Kapha), meaning Moon in trines also strengthens medical and philosophical understanding. Moon = mind = sensitivity to sound = singing.

7. 🗣️ Sutra 1.2.118 — Stammering & Speech Defects (Ketu in 2nd)

Sutra: Ketu in the 2nd house from Lagna aspected by malefics produces stammering and other speech defects.

[!NOTE] Ketu = concealment, hiding (like throwing a smoke bomb). Clear speech requires the opposite — transparency. Hence Ketu in the 2nd typically obstructs clarity unless extraordinarily strong and benefically influenced.

[!WARNING] B.V. Raman had Rahu in the 2nd house (Rashi chart) — yet he was a renowned speaker and writer. This illustrates: Rashi chart alone is insufficient for detailed speech analysis. Always integrate Navamsa and the overall planetary context. Rahu in 2nd does not make someone a liar; context is everything.

What Causes Unclear Speech?

The root cause is affliction of either:

1. Mercury (natural karaka of speech/intellect), or
2. The 2nd lord (house lord of speech)

Afflictions = conjunctions with Mars, Saturn, Rahu; debilitation; combustion. Sun + Mercury (Budha Aditya Yoga) is a positive combination — it points toward spiritual knowledge, not speech defect.

8. 💸 Sutra 1.2.119 — Khemadruma Yoga (Poverty)

Sutra: Malefics simultaneously in the 2nd and 8th house from Lagna, Arudha Lagna, or Svamsa causes Khemadruma Yoga — poverty and deprivation.

Reference Points & Their Domains

[!IMPORTANT] The reference point determines the domain of suffering. The same malefics in 2nd/8th can simultaneously afflict multiple domains depending on which reference point they are measured from. Always specify which Khemadruma you are analyzing.

Moon's Confirming Aspect

If Moon aspects the malefics in 2nd and 8th (from any of the above reference points), the poverty or affliction is certain to manifest — not just possible.

Rashi Dasha Timing

Khemadruma Yoga results manifest during the Dasha of:

• The sign in the 2nd or 8th house from the relevant reference point
• Or the planet(s) occupying those houses

Mitigating & Aggravating Factors

[!NOTE] Sri Rama had Mercury in the 2nd from Arudha Lagna. During Mercury Mula Dasha, he regained his kingdom. Mercury in 2nd from AL = power/wealth Raja Yoga in the financial domain.

9. 🔍 Svamsa vs Karakamsha: When to Use Which

A common student question addressed in this class:

[!TIP] A shorthand: "Does the soul care about this?" → use Svamsa. "Is this a physical/worldly ability?" → use Navamsa Lagna. A person can have interest in religion without it being a soul-level matter (e.g., joining a religious order for social reasons) — in that case, use Navamsa Lagna, not Svamsa.

Marana Karaka Sthana — the house of "death" / severe weakness for each planet:

[!IMPORTANT] MKS in varga charts: Use the karya bhava of the varga, not the ascendant. Example: MKS in Navamsa is assessed from the 7th house (marriage is the karya of D-9). Venus in MKS from 7th (i.e., Venus in 6th from 7th = 12th house of Navamsa) causes marital difficulties — not Venus's MKS from Navamsa Lagna.

[!NOTE] Ketu's MKS in the 2nd house makes deep sense: Ketu is the Moksha Karaka — it has no desire for family, speech, or wealth. Being placed in the 2nd, where those themes live, is where Ketu most struggles and causes the most disruption.

Rule: A planet in the 10th house of Navamsa influences the Navamsa Lagna as if that planet were sitting in the Lagna. The way to find which planet it acts like is to count forward from the planet's weekday.

[!NOTE] When Mars is in the 10th house of Navamsa: count Tuesday → Wednesday → Thursday → Friday = Venus. The Navamsa Lagna then receives the effect of Venus — giving the native perfectionism, eye for detail, appreciation for beauty and quality.

[!TIP] When Rahu is in the 10th: Rahu → Ketu → Sunday → Monday = Moon. Moon's influence on Lagna → the person undertakes tirtha yatra (pilgrimage) — Moon = spiritual travel. This is why classical texts say "Rahu in 10th gives pilgrimages."

When No Planet Is in 10th

If the 10th house is empty, this rule does not apply. Analyze that chart from the planets that are in trines and their aspects on the Navamsa Lagna instead.

Strength Qualification

[!NOTE] When Jaimini says "Mars alone in fifth gives ulcers," it applies when Mars has prominence. Strength comes from: Vargottama, exaltation, own sign, or being in a strong avastha (state). A weak, heavily afflicted Mars in 5th may give the disease tendency, but a strong Mars may manifest as courage, competitive drive, or medical skill instead.

Multiple Planets in 10th (Weekday Rule)

If multiple planets occupy the 10th house in Navamsa, all their weekday-derived influences apply to the Lagna. The result is mishram (mixed) — the native cycles between the qualities of all those planetary influences, potentially switching between extremes (especially if both Rahu and Ketu are there — swings between pure materialism and pure spiritualism).
