🕉️ Class 21 — Tenth House Karmas & Opening of the Eleventh House
Shlokas 14–22 of Chapter 21 (Tenth House) from Santhanam's Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra commentary, followed by the opening verses of Chapter 22 (Eleventh House). The lecture unpacks what makes a person deeply engaged in good work (satkarma), what ruins the karma, and how Arudha placements reveal the world's perception of one's deeds.

Om Hare Rama Krishna. Hare Rama Krishna. Hare Rama Krishna. Om.
📖 Chapter 21 — Tenth House Shlokas 14–22
Shloka 14 — Tenth Lord in Kendra/Trikona with Exaltation & Jupiter
Conditions:
- Dashamesh (10th Lord) is in a Kendra (quadrant: 1, 4, 7, 10) or Trikona (trine: 1, 5, 9)
- He is in his exaltation sign (uccha)
- He is conjoined with or aspected by Jupiter
Result: The person performs great deeds (mahā-karma); the tenth house is fully blessed.
[!NOTE] All three factors are independently auspicious:
- Kendra/Trikona placement — inherently strong positions
- Exaltation — maximum planetary strength
- Jupiter's association — natural benefic blessing the karma
Shloka 15 — Tenth Lord in Lagna with Lagna Lord & Strong Moon
Conditions:
- Dashamesh is in the Lagna (1st house)
- Lagnesh (Lagna Lord) is also in the Lagna — forming a Raja Yoga between 1st & 10th lords
- Moon is in a Kendra or Trikona
Result: Satkarma Nirata — the person is deeply and passionately engaged in righteous, excellent deeds. Not just accomplished but emotionally invested.
Arudha Analysis:
| House | Arudha | Placement | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (Lagna) | Arudha Lagna (AL) | 10th house | Image tied to work/career |
| 10th (Karma) | A10 | Lagna (1st house) | Accomplishments front and centre |
- A10 in Lagna is in a quadrant — auspicious for any Arudha
- A10 is occupied by the lord of that sign (strong)
- AL in 10th → The world sees the person primarily through their work
[!IMPORTANT] Moon's role here: Moon = mental state. If Moon were in Maraka-sthana (2nd/7th) or the 8th, the mind would be unstable despite a strong Lagna–10th lord combination, undercutting the yoga. Moon in Kendra/Trikona confirms mental steadiness and alignment with the work.
Discussion — Parivartana Edge Case (Cancer Lagna):
A student raised a chart where:
- Mars (10th Lord) is in Cancer Lagna (debilitated)
- Moon (Lagna Lord) and Venus (11th Lord) are in Parivartana
The teacher's assessment: If the Parivartana is strongly triggered, Venus acting as Moon can partially satisfy the yoga, but:
- Mars is debilitated in Cancer — weak
- Venus–Mars conjunction is not harmonious
- Without Nijabhanga (cancellation of debility, e.g. Jupiter in a key position), the yoga operates only indirectly
Conclusion: Partial yoga possible through Parivartana, but not equivalent to the full yoga.
Shloka 16 — Saturn in Tenth with Debilitated Planet (Karmamsha)
Conditions:
- Saturn is in the 10th house (Karma Sthana)
- Along with a debilitated (neecha) planet
- In Karmamsha (see interpretations below), there is also a malefic conjunction
Result: The person is Karma Heena — lacking in work, possibly jobless or unaccomplished.
Three Interpretations of Karmamsha:
| Interpretation | Meaning | Chart to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Santhanam's: Tenth house in Navamsha | 10th from Navamsha Lagna has a malefic | D-9 |
| KP-style: Cusp of 10th in divisional | Take the degree of the 10th cusp; place that degree in D-9 or D-10; check if malefic is in that sign | D-9 or D-10 |
| Dasamsha synonym | Karmamsha = Dasamsha (D-10); Saturn is also afflicted in D-10 | D-10 |
[!TIP] The most rigorous reading combines all three: Saturn afflicted in Rasi + debilitated co-occupant + a malefic association in D-10. When all align, work life suffers severely.
Shloka 17 — Eighth–Tenth Lord Exchange with Malefic
Conditions:
- Karmesha (10th Lord) is in the 8th house
- Randhresha (8th Lord) is in the 10th house — a Parivartana (mutual exchange)
- At least one of them is conjoined by a functional malefic
Result: Dushkarma Nirata — the person is engaged in bad/harmful deeds, or faces severe obstacles in work.
Arudha Analysis:
- 10th Lord is in the 8th → A10 falls in the 6th house
- Any Arudha in a Dusthana (6, 8, 12) is inauspicious for that house's matter
- A10 in 6th → Work involves constant struggle, obstacles, and enemies
[!WARNING] If the planets are well-placed from Arudha Lagna, the person's public image may remain intact even while doing bad/harmful karma — they appear fine to the world but the internal work reality is troubled.

E -->|Yes| F["Dushkarma Nirata\n(harmful/bad deeds)"]
E -->|No| G["Struggles persist\nbut lesser harm"]
Shloka 18 — Tenth House & Seventh Afflicted, Tenth Lord Debilitated
Conditions:
- Malefics occupy both the 10th house and the 7th house (tenth from the 10th)
- Dashamesh is in debility (neecha)
Result: The person is handicapped in work — unable to accomplish significant things.
Why the 7th matters for work:
The 7th house represents partnerships and dealing with others. Meaningful work almost always requires collaboration. If the 7th is afflicted, the person cannot effectively work with others. Combined with 10th affliction and a debilitated 10th Lord (= intelligence applied to work is weak), all three pillars of karma collapse.
Shloka 19 — Moon in Tenth, Tenth Lord in Trine, Lagna Lord in Kendra
Conditions:
- Moon is in the 10th house
- Dashamesh is in a Napumsaka Trikona (2nd, 6th, or 10th) — an Artha Trikona
- Lagnesh is in a Kendra (quadrant)
Result: The person is accompanied by good fame (satkirti) — known widely and positively.
Why each factor matters:
| Factor | Significance |
|---|---|
| Moon in 10th | Moon = society; 10th = work/public life → work is highly visible to the masses |
| 10th Lord in Artha Trikona | Connects two Artha houses; resources flow into accomplishment |
| Lagna Lord in Kendra | Person actively applies intelligence toward effort; strong agency |
[!NOTE] Moon is a key planet for name and fame. Any strong link between Moon and the 10th house tends to bring public recognition.
Shloka 20 — Eleventh Lord in Tenth, Strong Tenth Lord Aspected by Jupiter
Conditions:
- Eleventh Lord is in the 10th house
- Dashamesh is strong (bala)
- Dashamesh is aspected by Jupiter (Devendra Guruna Drushte)
Result: Satkirti Sahito Bhavet — the person attains genuine, good fame (not notoriety).
Arudha Analysis:
- 11th Lord in 10th → A11 (Lavapada) falls in the 9th house
- Any Arudha in the 9th is greatly blessed (dharma sthana)
- A11 in 9th → Person's desires are fulfilled; whatever they wish to accomplish, they do
The 11th Lord's agenda is fulfillment of desires. In the 10th house, he must deliver that fulfillment through work. He becomes a powerful force for career achievement.
Shloka 21 — Tenth Lord in Ninth, Lagna Lord in Tenth, Moon in Fifth
Conditions:
- Dashamesh in the 9th house (trine from Lagna)
- Lagnesh in the 10th house
- Moon in the 5th house
Result: Khyata Nama Naro Bhavet — the person becomes very famous.
Multi-level Analysis:

C["Moon in 5th\n(Trine from Lagna)"] --> F["Strong mind & past-life merit"]
D & E & F --> G["FAME — Khyata Nama"]
Arudha Chain Analysis:
| Arudha | Location | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Arudha Lagna (AL) | 4th house (Kendra) | Image is stable and blessed |
| A10 | 5th house from AL | 5th from AL = "fame of the image" — work has directly built the person's reputation |
[!IMPORTANT] A key teaching from this shloka: Arudha placements relative to Arudha Lagna are as important — perhaps more important — than placements from Lagna itself.
- A10 in trine from AL → Work harmonises with and builds the image
- A10 in 8th from AL → Work causes dramatic upheavals in public image (could be sudden rise or fall depending on planetary strength)
Closing Verse — Lagna-Karmesha Link is the Key
"Iti karma phalam proktam sankshyepe na dvijottama. Lagna karmesha sambandha duhyam anyad api svayam."
"Thus have I described the results of the tenth house in brief, O great Brahmin. From the relationship between Lagna Lord and the tenth Lord, you may yourself infer the rest."
The entire chapter distils to a single principle: the link between Lagna and the 10th is the primary indicator of a person's karma. Lagna = self/intelligence; 10th = work accomplished. Their relationship determines how effectively the person's intelligence is channelled into deeds.
💰 Chapter 22 — Eleventh House (Labha Bhava) Opening Verses
"Labha bhava phalam chatha kathayami dvijottama. Sruyatam jatako loke yac chubhaktve sada sukhi."
"Now I describe the results of the eleventh house, O great Brahmin. By the auspiciousness of which the native will always be happy and comfortable in the world."
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs:
- Material gains and income
- Fulfillment of desires
- Overall worldly comfort and well-being
Verse 1 — Eleventh Lord in 11th / Kendra / Trikona / Exaltation / Surya-amsha
Conditions (any one or more):
- Labhadhipa (11th Lord) in the 11th house itself
- In a Kendra or Trikona
- In exaltation (uccha)
- In Surya-amsha
Result: Bahulabham — tremendous, abundant gains.
Note on Surya-amsha: Santhanam interprets this as combustion (burnt by Sun's rays), but the teacher disagrees. The word ga (= "gone into/placed in") does not grammatically support combustion. More likely:
[!TIP] Surya-amsha most plausibly means Leo (Simha rashi) as the 5th sign of the natural zodiac — a sign of royalty, power, and comfortable abundance. In which divisional chart? Most likely Shodashamsha (D-16), which governs comforts, since this entire chapter is about comfort and well-being. Alternatively Navamsha (D-9) or Chaturthamsha (D-4) for overall fortune/bhagya.
Verse 2 — Eleventh Lord in Second, Second Lord in Kendra with Jupiter
Conditions:
- Labhesha (11th Lord) in the 2nd house
- Dhanesha (2nd Lord) in a Kendra
- 2nd Lord conjoined with Jupiter
Result: Guru Labham — great, large-scale gains; wealth accumulates.
Arudha Analysis:
- 11th Lord in 2nd → A11 falls in the 2nd house (lord is 4 houses away from 11th; 11th + 4 = 2nd; mirror = 2nd)
- A11 in 2nd = Tangible gains go directly into accumulation/wealth; nothing is dissipated
The person earns and saves — a combination for genuine wealth-building, not just income.
Verse 3 — Eleventh Lord in Third with Benefits (36th Year Wealth)
Conditions:
- Labhesha in the 3rd house (Vikrama Bhava)
- Conjoined with natural/functional benefics
Result: Enormous wealth — the text quantifies 2,000 nishkas (gold coins). The teacher's contemporary translation: approximately two million dollars (at ~$1,000/gold coin). The 36th year is specified as when this manifests.
[!NOTE] The teacher cautions: do not be anchored to "36th year" — classical texts often use specific ages metaphorically for "early in life" or "prime working years." The underlying principle is more important than the literal number.
Why 11th Lord in 3rd is auspicious:
- Both are Kama Trikona houses (3, 7, 11)
- 11th Lord's agenda = gains; 3rd = initiative, drive, effort
- Result: A natural go-getter who pursues gains with drive and initiative
- This often produces early success in life
[!WARNING] This combination is easy to find in charts (11th Lord in 3rd is common). Apply with nuance — also examine Lagna Lord, 9th Lord, and 10th Lord before declaring early success. Drive alone does not guarantee achievement.
🔮 Arudha Analysis — Key Principles
This class contains several important Jaimini/Arudha teachings woven through the Parasara commentary:

Summary of Arudha Positions discussed:
| Shloka | Condition | A10 Location | AL Location | Net Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 10th Lord + Lagna Lord in Lagna | Lagna (1st) | 10th | Work defines the person; image = career |
| 17 | 10th Lord in 8th | 6th | Varies | Work full of obstacles; dusthana |
| 21 | Lagna Lord in 10th | 5th house | 4th | A10 in 5th from AL = fame built by work |
[!IMPORTANT] The teacher's key teaching on Arudhas: "Placement of Arudhas relative to Arudha Lagna is perhaps more important than placement from Lagna."
