❓ Q&A — How to Read Divisional Narayana Dasha

Question: When the software gives a Dasamsa Narayana Dasha sign, should you take that sign as Lagna, or take the lord of that sign as Lagna?

Answer: Neither.

"In the case of Dasamsa Narayana Dasha, the Narayana Dasha sign is not the Lagna, and even its lord is not the Lagna. It is simply the progression of the tenth lord."

The Dasamsa Narayana Dasha sign shows what work the person is doing at that time — it is not a chart lagna. You look at it to see the influences on the career at that moment, not to derive it as a fresh chart lagna. The lagna-based analysis of the Dasha sign (Principles 2 and 3) applies only to Rashi chart Narayana Dasha, not divisional chart Narayana Dasha.

Parasara defines three categories based on how a sign "rises" on the eastern horizon.

📐 The Four-Part Sub-Rule for the Lord

The one-third allocated to the lord is further divided into four equal parts. The order in which these four parts give results depends on whether the planet (lord) is benefic or malefic.

Benefic Planet — Selfless, Cares for Others First

"If a nice person comes to your house and something is happening there, they will forget about their own needs, help you first, and then attend to their own needs."

Malefic Planet — Selfish, Cares for Itself First

"A bad guy doesn't care whether the house is being taken care of. He is worried about himself. Are you having dinner with the CEO or not? That matters more than doing your actual job."

[!TIP] For yogas (3rd quarter for benefics, 2nd quarter for malefics), use only Graha Drishti (not Rasi Drishti). This includes conjunctions, Samsaptaka, and Parivarthana.

Natural Benefic vs. Malefic Classification

[!NOTE] This is natural (Naisargika) benefic/malefic, NOT functional (Karaka). Even Saturn can be a functional benefic for Capricorn Lagna.

📊 Order of Associations — Longitude & Karakatwa

The associations slot (1/3 of the Dasha) is shared equally among all planets occupying OR aspecting the sign by Rasi Drishti.

Finding the order: Use Chara Karaka order based on planetary longitudes (highest to lowest advancement in sign).

[!IMPORTANT] For Rahu and Ketu, count longitude from the end of the sign (i.e., 30° minus their degree). They are always retrograde.

Each planet gets an equal share of that one-third period. The most advanced (by Chara Karaka rank) gives results first.

You can further sub-divide any planet's period using the same 4-part benefic/malefic rule.

🔮 Planet States — Avasthas

Uchcha Bala (Exaltation Strength)

A proportional measure of how close a planet is to its exact deep exaltation point.

• Range: 0–60 points
• Formula: Distance from deep debilitation point ÷ 3
• At deep exaltation: 60 points
• At deep debilitation: 0 points
• In software: Strength tab → Shad Bala → Sthana Bala → Uchcha Bala

Priority Order for Assessing State

1. Friend's house vs. enemy's house — most important
2. Uchcha Bala — how close to exaltation point
3. Sayana Avastha (specific activity state) — e.g., Nrityalipsa (desirous of dancing = very energetic)
4. Other avasthas (alertness: awake/dreaming/asleep; age: Balya/Kaumara/Yuva/Vrddha/Mrtyu; mood: sad/excited/ashamed)

Basic Avasthas in Software

[!NOTE] Software shows Sayana Avastha (the most important) — it describes the exact activity/mood state of the planet. The teacher says to give priority to: (1) friend/enemy placement, (2) Uchcha Bala, (3) Sayana Avastha.

Planet in Friend's vs. Enemy's House

• Adhimitra (great friend's house) = very good
• Friend's house = good
• Neutral house = neutral
• Enemy's house = bad
• Atishatru (great enemy's house) = even if planet is in Nrityalipsa Avastha, he "can't dance there"

Temporary (Tatkalika) Friendship

Planets in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, and 12th from any given planet are temporary friends of that planet. All others are temporary enemies.

Combining natural and temporary relationship gives:

• Natural friend + temporary friend = Adhi Mitra (great friend)
• Natural friend + temporary enemy = Neutral
• Natural enemy + temporary enemy = Ati Shatru (great enemy)

🌀 Worked Example — Sagittarius Dasha (Teacher's Chart)

Sagittarius is Prishtodaya (back-rising) → Sign gives results LAST. Jupiter (lord) is in Libra (a Sishodaya sign) → Lord gives results FIRST. Remaining middle = Associations.

Order

1. First one-third (1983–1987 approx.): Jupiter's results
2. Middle one-third (1987–1991 approx.): Sun's results (only Sun aspects Sagittarius by Rasi Drishti)
3. Last one-third (1991–1995 approx.): Sagittarius sign's results

Jupiter's Period — Four Sub-Parts

Jupiter is benefic → Order: Occupied → Owned → Yogas → Avastha

[!NOTE] Kalagni Yoga: Jupiter in 2nd or 5th house aspected by Mercury and Venus (using Graha Drishti). Results: wealth, well-versed, aristocratic.

Bhaskara Yoga: Sun in 2nd from Moon, Mercury in 3rd from Moon, Jupiter in 9th from Moon → wealthy, learned in shastras, music, astrology.

Sun's Period — Four Sub-Parts

Only Sun aspects Sagittarius by Rasi Drishti. Sun is malefic → Order: Avastha → Yogas → Owned → Occupied

Sun is in Pisces — friend's house (Jupiter owns Pisces, they are friends). Excellent Uchcha Bala (54/60 — Sun exalts in Aries, Pisces is nearby). Nrityalipsa Avastha (desirous of dancing = energetic).

[!TIP] Badhaka Sthana for foreign travel: Chara (mobile) signs → 11th house; Sthira (fixed) signs → 9th house; Dvishvabha (dual) signs → 7th house. A planet in the Badhaka Sthana aspecting the 4th house can show going abroad for studies.

Sagittarius Sign's Period (Last Third, ~1991–1995)

Sign itself = 4th house from Lagna. Sign is affected by Pisces, Gemini, Virgo aspects (by Rasi Drishti).

Results: Lot of studies and education; possibility of marriage (7th aspect); career beginning (10th aspect); health improvement (Lagna aspect). Actually during this period: adjusting to US life, studies, work.

🌀 Worked Example — Aries Dasha (1995–2007)

Aries is Prishtodaya → Sign gives results LAST (2003–2007). Mars (lord) is in Aries = Prishtodaya sign → Lord takes second available slot = Middle (1999–2003). Remaining = Associations (7 planets) → First (1995–1999).

Associations Period — Seven Planets (1995–1999)

Order by Chara Karaka (advancing longitude): Moon → Mars → Saturn → Rahu → Ketu → Venus → Mercury

Each gets approximately 7 months.

Mars Lord's Period — Four Sub-Parts (1999–2003)

Mars is malefic → Order: Avastha → Yogas → Owned → Occupied

Mars is in Moolatrikona in Aries (8th house) → excellent strength. Vriksha Avastha = very energetic.

Aries Sign's Period (Last Third, 2003–2007)

Aries = 8th house from Lagna → health problems, tension relating to health. Aries = 6th from Arudha Lagna (malefic sign in 6th from AL = good for material success). Aries = 3rd from Chandra Lagna → mental energy, initiative. Aspected by Aquarius (6th house fights), Cancer (twelfth house losses), Virgo (communication).

[!NOTE] Arudha Lagna analysis is Kala Patra dependent (perspective-dependent). Benefics in 3rd/6th from AL = "very saintly, if you hit me I won't hit back" image = materially bad but spiritually positive. Malefics in 3rd/6th from AL = successful fighter, materialistic image.
