🕉️ Class 35 — Sixth Lord in Houses 1 through 6
Parāśara's verse-by-verse analysis of the ṣaṣṭheśa (sixth lord) placed in each of the first six houses, using bhāvat-bhāvam, argalā, and house-as-lagna logic to decode seemingly paradoxical results.

🔑 Key Principles — Reading a Duṣṭhāna Lord {#key-principles}
[!IMPORTANT] A planet that is malefic for lagna need not be malefic for every house. Always assess a planet's nature relative to each house separately — not just relative to the ascendant.
The core analytical toolkit used throughout this class:
| Technique | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| Bhāvat-bhāvam | Take the relevant house as lagna; which house does the planet occupy from there? |
| Argalā | Does the planet interfere (2nd, 4th, 11th positions) with a house, helping or hindering it? |
| Kāma Trikona connection | 3rd, 7th, 11th — when two of these are linked, strong desire operates in that domain |
| Dharma Trikona connection | 1st, 5th, 9th — dharmic quality of the indicated domain |
| House of contentment | Fourth from any house = how contented the person is with that house's matter |
[!NOTE] The sixth house is the root of all six ripus (ariṣaḍvarga). The 7th–12th houses are branches — each showing one weakness (kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya). The sixth lord carries the seed energy of all these weaknesses wherever it goes.
🏠 Sixth Lord in Lagna (1st House) {#6th-lord-in-lagna}
Sanskrit: Ṣaṣṭheśe lagne — verse from Parāśara's Bṛhat Pārāśara Horā Śāstra
Results given by Parāśara
| Sanskrit Term | Meaning | Astrological Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Rogavān | Has disease | 6th lord (obstacles/disease) directly afflicts lagna (body) |
| Kīrti Samyutaḥ | Famous, renowned | From 5th house of fame: planet is 2nd lord in 9th — abundant resources of fame |
| Ātma Śatruḥ | Enemy of self / own people | 6th lord creates obstacles to lagna itself; also 5th lord in 12th (family loses emotional peace) |
| Dhanī | Wealthy | — |
| Mānī | Honorable | From 10th house: planet is 9th lord in 4th — trine lord in quadrant = powerful for career |
| Sāhasī | Adventurous, brave | From 3rd house: planet is in 11th — upachaya lord with argalā on another upachaya |
| Guṇavān | Virtuous, righteous | From 9th house: 10th lord in 5th — karma-dharma lord in Dharma Trikona |
🔍 Why is the result mostly positive despite a duṣṭhāna lord in lagna?
Lagna perspective → 6th lord → body gets disease
5th house (fame) → same planet is 2nd lord in 9th → abundant fame-resources ✓
10th house (career)→ same planet is 9th lord in 4th → trine lord in quadrant ✓
3rd house (courage)→ same planet is in 11th → fighting-spirit fulfilled ✓
9th house (dharma) → same planet is 10th lord in 5th → karma in Dharma Trikona ✓
[!TIP] This passage is Parāśara's explicit lesson: "What is bad for lagna need not be bad for fifth, ninth, or tenth house." Context — not blanket labels — determines planetary results.
💰 Sixth Lord in 2nd House {#6th-lord-in-2nd-house}
Sanskrit: Ṣaṣṭheśe dhanabhāvasthe — sahasi kula viśruthaḥ | paradeśī sukhī vaktā svakarma nirataḥ sadā ||
Results
| Sanskrit Term | Meaning | Astrological Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Sāhasī | Bold in execution | From 6th house: lagna lord in 9th — 6th house (fighting) is very strong; but from 3rd house: 4th lord in 12th — initiative itself is weak. Net = not a self-starter, but a formidable executor |
| Kula Viśruthaḥ | Famous within family/circles | From 2nd house of family: planet is 5th lord in lagna — fame relative to family milieu |
| Paradeśī | Lives or desires to live abroad | From 12th house of foreign lands: planet is 7th lord in 3rd — Kāma Trikonas (3rd & 7th) linked → strong desire to be abroad |
| Sukhī | Comfort-accumulating | From 4th house: planet is 3rd lord in 11th — initiative + house of gains both active; argalā on 4th house |
| Vaktā | Gifted orator | From 2nd house of speech: a trine lord is placed in lagna — eloquence indicated |
| Svakarma Nirataḥ | Devoted to own work, good work ethics | From 10th house: planet is 9th lord in 5th — Dharma Trikona lord in Dharma Trikona; also argalā on 10th |
[!NOTE] The distinction between initiative (sāhasa as drive) and execution (sāhasa as fighting ability) is illustrated here. The 3rd house as lagna is weak (4th lord in 12th), but the 6th house as lagna is very strong (lagna lord in 9th). This person does not chase adventures — but once committed, fights to the finish.
🔥 Sixth Lord in 3rd House {#6th-lord-in-3rd-house}
Sanskrit: Ṣaṣṭheśe sahajajātaḥ krodhī vikramavārjitaḥ | bhrātaḥ śatrusamasthasya dhṛtaścottaradāyakaḥ ||
Results
| Sanskrit Term | Meaning | Astrological Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Krodhī | Fire in the belly (not mere anger) | 6th lord (fire of overcoming) in 3rd (fire of initiative) — two upachaya / fiery houses merge; contained fire = drive, uncontained = short temper |
| Vikramavārjitaḥ | Lacks raw bravery / drive | From 3rd as lagna: 4th lord (contentment, water) in lagna — contentment dampens 3rd-house fire; 6th lord also afflicts the 3rd |
| Bhrātā Śatrusamaḥ | Brother is like an enemy | 6th lord of enmity directly afflicts 3rd house (siblings) |
| Dhṛtaścottaradāyakaḥ | Disobedient servant who talks back | From 6th house as lagna: lagna lord in 10th — servants apply intelligence to work instead of just obeying commands |
[!NOTE] Why does the servant talk back? The 6th house (lagna of servants) has its own lagna lord in the 10th house — a house of independent judgment and authority. The servant thus engages his mind before acting. Sixth lord in 3rd means the native must exert 3rd-house fire even in dealings with servants.

🧠 Sixth Lord in 4th House {#6th-lord-in-4th-house}
Sanskrit: Ṣaṣṭheśe sukhabhāvasthe mātuḥ sukhavivarjyaḥ | manasvi piśuna dveṣī calachittaḥ ativittavān ||
Results
| Sanskrit Term | Meaning | Astrological Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Mātuḥ Sukhavivarjyaḥ | No happiness from mother | 6th lord of enmity in 4th house (mother) — just as 6th in 3rd = enmity with sibling |
| Manasvi | Shrewd problem-solver | From 6th house: planet is in 11th (fulfillment) — house of overcoming obstacles fulfilled → skillful problem-solver |
| Piśunāḥ | Rumor-monger | From 9th (dharma): 10th lord in 8th — actions that cause dharma to fall; also Ārūḍha of 6th falls in 2nd house of speech |
| Dveṣī | Jealous / envious | Planet has argalā on 12th house (humility) — planet is 6th lord (root of weaknesses) influencing 12th → jealousy instead of humility |
| Calachittaḥ | Fickle, restless mind | 6th lord in 4th (no peace); from 5th (emotional stability): planet is in 12th (loss of stability) |
| Ativittavān | Extremely wealthy (capable) | From 2nd house: 5th lord in 3rd — wealth-building skill (5th from 2nd) combined with drive (3rd house initiative) |
[!TIP] Manasvi here does NOT mean compassionate or deeply intelligent in the generic sense. It specifically means shrewd problem-solver because the 6th lord (house of overcoming problems) is in the 11th from the 6th house (fulfillment) — the sixth-house agenda is maximally accomplished.
Why Argalā on 12th = Jealousy not Humility
[!NOTE] The 12th house rules both humility and its absence, jealousy. Which manifests depends on the nature of the planet with argalā. The 6th lord is the root of all ṣaḍripu (six enemies of the soul). A 6th lord with argalā on the 12th activates the matsarya (jealousy) branch of the sixth house.
🌊 Sixth Lord in 5th House {#6th-lord-in-5th-house}
Sanskrit: Ṣaṣṭheśe pañcame — caladhana, putra mitra śatrutā, sukhī, svārthī, dayānvitaḥ
Results
| Sanskrit Term | Meaning | Astrological Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Caladhana | Fluctuating wealth | 6th lord (obstacles) has argalā on 2nd house — wealth exists but requires constant fighting to maintain |
| Putra Mitra Śatrutā | Enmity with children and friends | 6th lord directly in 5th (children); from 11th (friends): 8th lord in 7th — māraka for friendships |
| Sukhī | Happy / comfortable | 6th lord has argalā on lagna and 4th house — but being 6th lord, can also rob happiness; Parāśara gives positive shade |
| Svārthī | Selfish | Planet is detrimental to 7th house (12th lord in 11th from 7th → loss for others) yet conducive to lagna (argalā on lagna) — classic pattern for selfishness |
| Dayānvitaḥ | Kind and compassionate | Planet is 2nd lord in 5th (from 5th as lagna) → emotional abundance; argalā on 4th; from 9th house: karma-dharma lord in 9th → very helpful and dharmic |
[!NOTE] The selfish-yet-kind paradox: Parāśara gives both results because they reflect different domains. The native may be genuinely emotionally tender (dayānvita) while simultaneously acting selfishly in material dealings (svārthī). These are not mutually exclusive.

✨ Sixth Lord in 6th House (Own House) {#6th-lord-in-6th-house}
Sanskrit: Ṣaṣṭheśe ripubhāvasthe vairam svajñātīmaṇḍalāt | anyaiḥ saha bhavedmaitri sukhamadhyam dhanādijam ||
Results
| Sanskrit Term | Meaning | Astrological Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Svajñātī Vaira | Enmity with own kinsmen (group) | 6th lord (enmity) has argalā on 2nd house (family, close kin) |
| Anyaiḥ Maitri | Friendly with others / strangers | From 7th house: planet is 12th lord in 12th — not having argalā on 7th; in the house of giving up from 7th → enmity toward general others is released |
| Sukha Madhyam Dhanādijam | Medium contentment from wealth | Wealth itself: from 2nd house, planet is 5th lord in 5th → quite wealthy. Contentment: from 5th house (= 4th from 2nd), planet is 2nd lord in 2nd → neither strong nor weak; mixed → medium contentment |
| Harṣa Yoga | Cheerfulness | 6th lord in own house = classical Harṣa Yoga — person is naturally cheerful and buoyant |
[!TIP] Contentment ≠ Wealth. From any house X, the 4th house from X shows contentment with that matter. Wealth (2nd house) → contentment with wealth = 5th house. The planet must be strong from both the 2nd and 5th houses for the native to be both wealthy AND contented with wealth.

⚖️ Sidebar — Second House: Sustainer and Māraka {#second-house-duality}
A student asked: "Why is the second lord always a Māraka?"
[!IMPORTANT] The 2nd house governs sustenance — food, resources, what keeps the body alive. Death and sustenance are two sides of the same coin: when sustenance is cut off, death follows; when death comes, sustenance ceases. The second lord is simultaneously the one who nourishes you and the one who can withdraw that nourishment.
Key points on second lord as Māraka vs. sustainer:
- Second lord strong + well-placed → sustains; can still be Māraka if in bad relationship with lagna lord and 8th lord.
- Second lord from Upapada → sustains or breaks the marriage, depending on strength and relationship with Upapada lord.
- The planet in the 2nd house = what you actually eat/consume; planet in 3rd house = what is available for consumption.
- Saturn in 2nd → poor nourishment even if food is available; Jupiter in 3rd → excellent food materials available.
The glass is neither full nor empty just because you know it is a glass. Whether it is full or empty depends on other factors. Similarly, second lord does not automatically mean wealth or death — context determines expression.
🍲 Sidebar — Food and the Second/Third House {#food-combinations}
| House | Significance for Food |
|---|---|
| 2nd house | The actual eating / consumption; nourishment of the body |
| 3rd house | Resources/materials available for consumption |
| 2nd from 2nd (3rd) | Resources feeding the food house → what kinds of food are available |
Example combinations:
- Jupiter in 3rd → abundant Jupiterian foods (sweets, rich items) available for consumption
- Saturn in 2nd → poor nourishment; body is not well-fed regardless of availability
- Jupiter in 3rd + Saturn in 2nd → excellent food is available but the native does not eat it well; may always be on the move, ending up with junk food
