🔄 Recap: The Four Pillars of Chart Reading

PVR opens by reviewing the full methodology before proceeding to new material. The steps when approaching any chart query:

flowchart TD
A["1. Select the right VARGA\n(D10 for career, D24 for learning, etc.)"] --> B
B["2. Select the right HOUSE\n(10th for karma, 4th for learning, 8th for occult)"] --> C
    C["3. Identify INFLUENCES on that house\nOwner · Occupants · Aspects · Argala"] --> D
D["4. Assess KARAKA relationship\nDoes the planet align with the house's karaka?"]

The Kāraka: The Project Manager

  • Owner (lord): Like the boss — has command over all resources.
  • Occupants: Like the team — daily, direct influence; often stronger than the owner.
  • Kāraka: The project manager. Whether a planet gives its results depends on its relationship with the kāraka AND the kāraka's relationship with the planet's dispositor.

If the project manager (kāraka) dislikes the worker-planet (or the owner of the worker-planet's house), the worker will not be allowed to contribute fully. Good relationships = full results. Bad relationships = obstructed results.

[!NOTE] A planet's strength matters too. Even if a planet desires to give results (good graha dṛṣṭi), if the planet is weak, it cannot deliver well. Planetary strengths will be covered in a later class. For now, assume strong planets give their results.

Key House Meanings (Quick Recap)

House General Meaning In D24 Specifically
4th Comfort, mother, property Education / learning
8th Hidden, occult, tapas, sadhana Occult learning (astrology etc.)
9th Guru, dharma, boss In D10: your boss/employer
10th Karma, activities in society Career/karma in any chart

🔮 Aṃśa Rulers — The Deities of Each Division

This is a deeper layer of divisional chart reading that Parāśara himself defined.

The Concept

When a planet is placed in a particular amśa (sub-division) of a sign in any Varga Chakra, that specific sub-division is ruled by a deity. The deity shows in what manner or with what quality the planet gives its results.

  • The house and planet tell you what activity is being done and by whom.
  • The deity (amśa ruler) tells you how it is done — the manner, the motivation, the quality.

[!IMPORTANT] You never guess the career from the deity alone. Career comes from house + planet + aspects. The deity gives the flavour and manner of the activity. A Jupiter in the 10th house of a teacher who is in Yama's amśa will still be a teacher — but a strict, rule-enforcing teacher who punishes students for not doing homework.

How to Access in Jagannath Hora Software

Go to: Basics tab → Amśa Rulers sub-tab → Select the desired Varga (D24, D10, etc.) from the dropdown. The deity for each planet in that chart will be displayed.

Number of Deities Per Varga

Each Varga has approximately N deities for its N divisions (not always exactly N due to repetition). Examples:

  • D24 (Siddhāmśa): 24 deities — each of the 24 sub-divisions of every sign is ruled by one deity.
  • D10 (Daśāmśa): 10 deities — the ten Dikpālakas (directional rulers).
  • D60 (Ṣaṣṭhyāmśa): 60 deities — all referenced in BPHS.

The complete list is in Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra (BPHS), Chapter on Divisional Charts (Varga Bheda Adhyāya). Recommended editions:

  • R. Santhanam translation (PVR's personal preference)

🪐 Completing Pandit Sanjay Rath's D24 (Siddhāmśa)

Birth data: 7 August 1963, 9:15:40 PM IST, 83°58′E, 21°27′N

Lagna in D24: Skanda's Aṃśa

Lagna in Siddhāmśa is in the aṃśa ruled by Skanda (Kārttikeya / Subramaṇya / Kumārasvāmi / Murugan). This gives the native a Skanda-like essence in his approach to learning and knowledge.

Jupiter in 10th House: Viśvakarma's Aṃśa

Jupiter (in Pisces, 10th house) is in the aṃśa of Viśvakarma, the celestial architect (Deva Śilpī).

Reading: Jupiter in the 10th tells us: karma is related to Vedic/Maharṣi knowledge. But in what manner? As Viśvakarma, the karma is building something — constructing an institution, an edifice, for the gods (Vedic knowledge), not for demons (Māya is the Rākṣasa Śilpī).

Sanjay Rath has been building the Sri Jagannath Center — a Jyotiṣa institution dedicated to Vedic learning. This is Viśvakarma's work: construction of a divine edifice of knowledge.

Mars in 12th House (6th Lord): Paraśurāma's Aṃśa

Mars owns the 6th and 11th houses. The 6th house of overcoming obstacles, combined with the planet being in Paraśurāma's amśa, reveals how Sanjay Rath overcomes the obstacles in spreading this knowledge.

[!NOTE] Paraśurāma is not primarily about violence or slaying. He is the Rājasic avatāra of Viṣṇu who represents the rapture of tapasya — the spiritual happiness born from the burning fire of sustained spiritual practice. The "slaying of Kṣatriyas" is a metaphor: the rajasic ego-qualities within us are burnt away when this rapture arises. Paraśurāma is the ānanda of sādhana.

Reading: Mars in Paraśurāma's aṃśa = Sanjay Rath overcomes obstacles with joyful determination and rajasic energy. He finds rapture in the fight. He is very strong and very determined in this process.

🧭 The Ten Dikpālaka Deities of Daśāmśa

Daśāmśa (D10) divides each sign into 10 parts of 3° each. In odd signs, the 10 parts are ruled by the 10 Dikpālakas in order. In even signs, the order is reversed (starts from Ananta).

The Dikpālakas are the rulers of the 10 directions — 8 in the horizontal plane + 2 vertical (above/below):

Detailed Meanings of Each Deity

Deity Direction Daśāmśa Meaning
Indra East Power, authority, commanding respect. Devarāja — king of gods. Not mere popularity, but real authority and power.
Agni SE Transformation. Engineers who design things, legislators who create new laws, inventors, transformers of raw material into new forms. Jāṭharāgni (digestive fire), buddhi-agni (understanding).
Yama South Upholding Dharma. Law enforcement, judges, lawyers, policemen, soldiers. Not mere cruelty — Dharmarāja upholds cosmic justice. Whatever field: does it ruthlessly, by the book.
Nirṛti SW Daughter of Hiṃsā (violence personified). Her children: Bhaya (fear), Mahābhaya (terror), Mṛtyu (death). Associated with Rāhu (in Vāstu, SW = Rāhu). Shows: demonic/underground activities OR barrier-breaking innovation. Neglected work, work outside mainstream respectability.
Varuṇa West Ocean god; patience, perseverance, hard work over time. Overseas trade (sea connection). Activities requiring endurance.
Vāyu NW Wind, energy. Giving strength, building power, uplifting the weak. Father of Hanumān and Bhīmasena. Energizing some section of society.
Kubera North Lord of wealth. Money-mindedness. Whatever the planet shows in terms of activity, the guiding motivation is money.
Īśāna NE Auspicious form of Śiva. Īśāna sarva vidyānām. Religiousness, purity, good knowledge. Opposite of Nirṛti (just as NE opposes SW). Mercury rules NE in Vāstu.
Brahmā Down (Adhodik) Rājasic exploration by digging. Researchers who probe material reality by experiment. Scientists. Engineers who dig into technical depths. Rajasic, experimental search.
Ananta Up (Ūrdhvadik) Spiritual rise. Transcending the two-dimensional material plane and rising upward. Spiritual activities, meditative exploration, rising above material concerns.

[!TIP] Use the deity to add a qualitative dimension to your reading, not to determine career category. A planet in Yama's amśa + Jupiter = a strict but respected teacher. The same in Yama's amśa + Mars = a soldier or policeman. The planet + house give the category; the deity gives the quality/manner.

🎬 Case Study 1 — Aishwarya Rai (D10 revisited)

Birth: 1 November 1973, 4:07 AM IST, 74°51′E, 12°54′N D10 Lagna: Siṁha (Leo)

Previously established (Class 05): 5th lord Venus + Jupiter (Moola Trikona) in 5th house → Rāja Yoga in a Trikona = blessed, effortless success; Venus-ruled career (entertainment).

New in this class: Aṃśa Rulers

Venus (10th lord, in 5th house): In Indra's Aṃśa.

Indra = authority, power, commanding respect. Not just a popular entertainer — she is queen-like, authoritative, someone who commands reverence. Devarāja = king of gods, and she is the queen-equivalent in the world of entertainment. This matches Aishwarya Rai's real image precisely.

Jupiter (5th lord, 5th house, Moola Trikona): In Kubera's Aṃśa.

Jupiter shows her following and popularity (5th lord in 5th house). Kubera governs money. Therefore: she looks at her own popularity and following through the lens of money. "I have so much following, so I can charge more." She is money-minded when it comes to leveraging her fame. Whether she actually earns that money is seen from D2 (Horā), not here.

Venus + Jupiter in Enemy's House

A critical nuance PVR introduces here:

[!WARNING] Venus is in Jupiter's Moola Trikona (Sagittarius from Leo lagna), but Venus and Jupiter are enemies. This means the Rāja Yoga is between enemy planets. The yoga gives results, but something uncomfortable or unsatisfying comes with it. The native may be wildly successful yet not fully happy about it — not deriving deep satisfaction from the karma. Contrast this with PVR's own D10 where 9th lord + 10th lord are in Parivartana (exchange) — friends, comfortable with each other, doing karma happily.

Saturn (2nd house, D10): Nirṛti's Aṃśa

Saturn is in the 2nd house (resources for karma). He owns the 6th and 7th houses from Siṁha lagna. Saturn in Nirṛti's aṃśa suggests some irreligiousness or ethically questionable elements in the resources/methods used in her karma. (PVR declines to elaborate publicly.)

🎭 Case Study 2 — Tom Hanks (D10)

Birth: 9 July 1956, 11:17 AM, 7h W of GMT, 122°1′W, 37°58′N (Northern California)

Initial Assessment

Lagna: Not specified directly, but derived from the planets' placement. 6th house (Artha Trikona): Venus + Mercury + Jupiter + Mars → very powerful 6th house. The 6th house dominates the Artha Trikona (2nd, 6th, 10th), meaning his karma in society is primarily defined by overcoming obstacles, not the 10th house of recognized achievement.

[!IMPORTANT] Never blindly look only at the 10th house for career. If the 6th house is significantly stronger (more planets, lords present, etc.), the 6th house shows the dominant karmic theme. What this person does is primarily to overcome obstacles. The nature of the obstacles reveals the career.

Venus in 6th house:

  • Venus = lord of 6th house (Libra) → in own sign in Moola Trikona.
  • Moola Trikona = duty-minded. Venus does his job of overcoming obstacles with full commitment, like an employee in his own office.
  • Venus shows entertainment.
  • Venus is retrograde (vakra).

Retrograde Planets (Vakra Graha)

[!NOTE] A retrograde planet (vakri) carries the energy of an unfulfilled desire from past lives. The planet is like a person who had a strong desire in the last life that was not completed. In this life, it comes with missionary-level zeal because it is leftover from the past. In a house of obstacles, retrograde is excellent — it brings extraordinary zeal and passion to the process of overcoming.

Venus retrograde in the 6th house: Tom Hanks overcomes the obstacles of entertainment with extraordinary, past-life-fuelled zeal. He insists on doing something different every time, works harder than necessary even when he doesn't have to.

Contrast with Aishwarya Rai: Her Rāja Yoga is in the 5th house (Trikona = blessings) → things come on a silver platter. Tom Hanks' Rāja Yoga equivalent is in the 6th house (obstacles) → everything comes through hard work, and he wants that hard work.

Venus's Aṃśa: Indra

Venus is in Indra's Aṃśa — same as Aishwarya Rai. This confirms: very influential, authoritative, commanding. Not just successful, but a figure of power and authority in his field. People recognise him as the unquestioned authority.

Ātmakāraka — Venus

Tom Hanks' Ātmakāraka (the planet that represents his individual soul — computation to be covered in a future class) is Venus. His soul is shown by Venus. This means he puts his very soul into this particular activity — overcoming obstacles in entertainment, entertaining people. The desire is not just a professional one but a soul-level calling.

🏛️ Case Study 3 — Amartya Sen (D10)

Birth: 3 November 1933, 3:40 PM IST, 87°32′E, 23°55′N (Eastern India)

D10 Chart

Lagna: Gemini (Mithuna) 10th house (Pisces/Meena): Sun + Mars

Key observation: Mars is in Pisces (Jupiter's sign), and Jupiter is in Scorpio (Mars' sign). This is a Parivartana Yoga (exchange of houses).

Parivartana (Exchange of Houses)

[!IMPORTANT] When two planets exchange houses (Parivartana), each planet behaves as if it is in the other's house. Mars in Jupiter's house acts like Jupiter; Jupiter in Mars' house acts like Mars. The results are approximately 70–80% as strong as if the planet were actually in its own house. This is a crucial principle: always check for Parivartana before finalizing any house reading.

Analogy: If PVR stays at Narayan Iyer's house in New Jersey, he will try to maintain the house the way Narayan does (mow lawn on Narayan's schedule, keep things as Narayan keeps them). He emulates the house owner's style. Similarly, Mars emulates Jupiter in Pisces, and Jupiter emulates Mars in Scorpio.

Result of Parivartana: The effective 10th house occupants become Sun + Jupiter (not Sun + Mars).

flowchart LR
    A["Mars in Pisces\n(Jupiter's house)\n→ Mars behaves like Jupiter"] --> C["Effective 10th house:\nSun + Jupiter"]
    B["Jupiter in Scorpio\n(Mars' house)\n→ Jupiter behaves like Mars"] --> C

Career Reading

  • Jupiter in Pisces (Moola Trikona, 10th house): Respected, learned professional — teacher, judge, priest, professor.
  • Pisces (Meena): Sattvic sign, cosmic sign, sign of Maharṣis and spiritual knowledge.
  • Sun (3rd lord from Gemini lagna): Brings determination and political energy to the 10th house.

Initial guess (before Parivartana): Sun + Mars in 10th → politician. But Jupiter's exchange changes this to Sun + Jupiter = a respected teacher who also deals with politics.

Exchange between 6th and 10th lords: Mars (6th lord, obstacles) and Jupiter (10th lord, karma) exchange houses → person does karma after overcoming tremendous obstacles. Great effort precedes great achievement.

Aṃśa Rulers

Jupiter in 10th house: Nirṛti's Aṃśa

Nirṛti = irreligiousness, barrier-breaking, working in neglected/underground domains, innovation outside mainstream respectability.

Jupiter + Nirṛti amśa = a learned, respected person working in a neglected domain that is not considered mainstream or "godly." This is NOT a spiritual teacher. This is someone who breaks barriers and does something the academic mainstream has not paid attention to.

Sun in Vayu's Aṃśa: Giving strength. Upliftment. Building power for someone. The political dimension is about uplifting the downtrodden, not about seizing personal power (VayuIndra).

Reading: This is an economics professor who broke academic barriers to study a neglected domain (poverty, famine in developing nations) in an innovative, unconventional way, with the aim of giving strength to the downtrodden. = Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize winner in Economics.

[!NOTE] Nirṛti's aṃśa can also show wrong or misleading knowledge — demonic knowledge. Based on the chart, some portion of Amartya Sen's theories could be misguided (just as demon-like knowledge can masquerade as scholarship). PVR mentions this openly: he doesn't know economics and won't make a specific judgement, but Nirṛti's influence warns of potential errors in the knowledge.

💼 Case Study 4 — Anonymous Jain Technocrat (D10)

Birth: 25 July 1961, 5:07 PM IST, 75°50′E, 22°44′N

Business vs. Service Determination

Standard method: Look at 6th house (service, hard work) vs. 7th house (desire, relationships, business).

House What It Shows in Career Context
6th (Artha Trikona) Overcoming obstacles; service (working for someone)
7th (Kāma Trikona) Desire, relationships; business (working for oneself)

But this is a thumb rule — it fails when the 7th lord goes into the 6th (they mix), or when a strong businessman happens to work very hard (6th house energy appears even in business charts).

Chart: Mīna Lagna (Pisces rising)

7th house (Virgo): Venus + Saturn + Rāhu.

  • Venus = lord of 3rd house (Kāma Trikona — seed of Kāma).
  • Saturn = lord of 11th house (Kāma Trikona — culmination of Kāma).
  • Two Kāma Trikona lords in the 7th house (desire, another Kāma house) = very strong desire. Strong desires → own business.
  • Venus = natural kāraka for desire. Natural kāraka of desire in the house of desire, with two Kāma Trikona lords. Crystal clear: strong desire motivates this person's karma.

Lagna lord Jupiter in 9th house:

  • Śāstra result for lagna lord in 9th house: person is very independent — he is his own boss (Dharma sthāna = boss, guru).
  • Confirmed: this is a businessman with a spirit of independence.

7th lord Mercury in 10th house:

  • Mercury shows the consciousness of his business (how he applies intelligence to it).
  • Mercury has argala on 7th house (Mercury is 4th from the 7th house = argala sthāna): Lord of business with argala on the house of business → further strengthens the business indication.

Parivartana Yoga (Lagna lord ↔ 9th lord)

Mars + Ketu in Lagna → Mars and Ketu own Scorpio (9th house from Pisces). Jupiter (Lagna lord) is in the 9th house. Exchange between 1st and 9th lords.

Result: Jupiter effectively behaves as if he is in the 1st house → Hamsa Mahāpuruṣa Yoga (Jupiter in a quadrant in own sign/exaltation/Moola Trikona). Jupiter in Lagna = very pious, pure, respected, dharmic person who spreads Dharma in society.

Mercury's Aṃśa: Kubera

Mercury (7th lord, in 10th house) is in Kubera's Aṃśa. Everything in his business is motivated by money. He will haggle to extract maximum value from any deal. Very money-minded when it comes to business.

Jupiter's Aṃśa: Īśāna

Jupiter (lagna lord, in 9th) is in Īśāna's Aṃśa. Īśāna = Śiva's auspicious form = religiousness, pure knowledge, auspiciousness. Jupiter also owns the 10th house (Sagittarius). So: he is not only a religious/pious person himself (Lagna) but he does religious karma in society (10th house = Jupiter = spreading religiousness).

Reading: A highly money-motivated tech businessman who is simultaneously a devoutly religious person engaged in spreading his religion to the community. Balance of Kubera (business money-mindedness) and Īśāna (religious purity).

Argala on Mercury (7th lord): Identifying the Business Type

  • Mercury = analytical, mathematical, engineering ability; trading (Vaiśya caste of planets).
  • 2nd house from Mercury: Contains? (Check chart — if planets present = argala).
  • 4th house from Mercury: Mars + Ketu → argala.
  • Mars + Ketu → electronics, hardware, high-tech hardware design.
  • Mars = physical/hardware; Ketu = specialized, occult/hidden technical knowledge.
  • Also, Rāśi Dṛṣṭi from Mars + Ketu on Mercury = permanent influence.

Type of business: High-tech electronics/hardware. Custom hardware design (semiconductor/chip-level or electronic systems). He sold one company, started another, currently in his third startup.

7th House Sign: Virgo

Virgo = Mercury's sign = analytical, intelligent, technical people. His business environment is populated by intelligent, analytical technical designers.

10th House Sign: Sagittarius

Sagittarius = Dharma sthāna of the natural zodiac. Whatever karma he does in society carries Dharmic flavour. He does it with fire (Agni Rāśi — Sagittarius is fiery). Passion and dharma together define his karma.

Identity: Anonymous. An NRI Jain technocrat — serial entrepreneur in tech hardware, active teacher and spreader of Jainism (Mahavīra's teachings) in America.

🔑 Key Principles: Parivartana, Retrograde, Business vs. Service

Parivartana Yoga Principle Summary

flowchart TD
A["Planet A in sign of Planet B\nPlanet B in sign of Planet A"] --> B["Exchange: each behaves ~70-80% like the other"]
    B --> C["When analyzing a house:\nMentally exchange the planets\nBefore drawing conclusions"]
    C --> D["Example: Mars in Pisces + Jupiter in Scorpio\nEffective 10th house = Jupiter (not Mars)"]

Always check for Parivartana before finalizing any reading. Failure to notice it can lead to completely wrong career predictions (e.g., seeing Sun + Mars and concluding "politician" when Jupiter's exchange makes it "respected teacher/professor").

Business vs. Service: A Multi-Factor Rule

Signal Interpretation
6th house stronger than 7th Service (working for others), overcoming obstacles
7th house stronger than 6th Business (own desire/relationships)
7th lord in 6th Could be business but with heavy work-like approach
Lagna lord in 9th Very independent, prefers to be own boss
Multiple Kāma Trikona lords in 7th Strong desire → business
Venus (natural kāraka of desire) in 7th Business or strong desire in karma

[!WARNING] These are thumb rules that work ~70-80% of the time. A businessman with a strong 6th house still works very hard. Apply intelligently, not mechanically.

Retrograde Planets in Career

A retrograde (vakri) planet in any house related to career carries unfulfilled desire from past lives into that house. The result is extraordinary, missionary-level zeal and commitment. In houses of obstacles (6th) or karma (10th), this zeal is highly beneficial. The person will give 150% even when 100% is sufficient.

Viparita Rāja Yoga

Introduced while discussing Pandit Sanjay Rath's D24 (Mars as 6th lord in 12th house).

Rule: If the lord of a duṣṭhāna (6th, 8th, or 12th house) goes to another duṣṭhāna, that is Viparita Rāja Yoga ("reversed Rāja Yoga").

Result: Initial struggle and problems (the duṣṭhāna energy manifests), then those problems are overcome, leading to results superior to a standard Rāja Yoga. It comes with effort and struggle, but the eventual reward is great.

In Sanjay Rath's D24: Mars (6th lord) in 12th house. Obstacles in the path of learning, but he overcomes them all, and his achievements surpass what a smooth, unobstructed path would have produced.

flowchart TD
    A["6th lord in 8th or 12th\n8th lord in 6th or 12th\n12th lord in 6th or 8th"] --> B["Viparita Rāja Yoga"]
    B --> C["Phase 1: Difficulty, struggle\n(duṣṭhāna energy manifests)"]
    C --> D["Phase 2: Transformation\n(struggle becomes the source of power)"]
    D --> E["Phase 3: Great success\n(greater than standard Rāja Yoga)"]

🦁 Mahāpuruṣa Yogas — Brief Introduction

Five Mahāpuruṣa Yogas created by the five planets (excluding Sun and Moon). Each planet creates one great person yoga:

Planet Yoga Name Result
♃ Jupiter Haṃsa Yoga Pure, pious, respected, spreads Dharma. The Haṃsa (swan) = purity.
♂ Mars Rucaka Yoga Warrior, strong, aggressive, determined, commanding.
☿ Mercury Bhadra Yoga Intellectual, analytical, witty, expert in commerce and communication.
♀ Venus Mālavya Yoga Beautiful, comfort-loving, artistic, expert in sensual pleasures.
♄ Saturn Śaśa Yoga Worker, austere, follower of the masses, disciplined.

Condition for the yoga: The planet must be:

  1. In a quadrant (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house), AND
  2. In own sign, Moola Trikona, or exaltation.

Parivartana can effectively move a planet into a quadrant (as in the anonymous technocrat's chart where Jupiter acts as if in Lagna via exchange with 9th lord).

[!NOTE] A full handout of Mahāpuruṣa Yogas with all definitions and results will be given in the next class.
