📖 BPHS Chapter 19 — Eighth House Longevity Verses
[!IMPORTANT] All Sanskrit from the Santanam version of BPHS. Functional malefic/benefic interpretation used throughout (not natural). Teacher notes that paapai = functional malefic; saumya/krura = natural benefic/malefic; subha/paapa = functional benefic/malefic.
Four Key Longevity Planets
♄ Saturn + ☉ Lagna lord + ☽/🌕 8th lord + ♂ 10th lord — these four determine longevity.
| Planet | House Connection | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| ♄ Saturn | Karaka of longevity, perseverance, hard work | To do great karmas, one must struggle and persist; Saturn enables this |
| ☉ Lagna lord | Essence of the self, vitality | The basic "being" of the person; seed of everything in the chart |
| 🌕 8th lord | Direct ruler of Ayusthana | Most directly responsible for conferring or curtailing lifespan |
| ♂ 10th lord | Karma to be done in the world | Great destiny (karma) = need to live long enough to fulfil it |
[!TIP] When 2–3 of these 4 planets are strong and in favorable houses (kendra, trikona, 11th), long life is indicated. One alone is insufficient (only ~40% confidence). All four strong = ~90% confidence of long life.
Long-Life Combinations
Verse 1 — 8th lord in Kendra
"Ayurbhava phalam chatha kathayamidwijottama. Ayusthanadhibah kendre dirghamayuh prayachchhati."
Translation: "I shall tell you the results of the eighth house, O great Brahmin. If the lord of the eighth house is in a quadrant (kendra), the native will have a long life."
Verse 2 — Modification: 8th lord in Kendra with Functional Malefic
"Ayusthanaadhipah paapai saha tatraiva samsthitah karotyalpaayusham jaatam lagneshopyatra samsthitah."
Translation: "If the 8th lord along with a functional malefic is there (tatraiva), it causes short life — especially with the Lagna lord also there."
[!NOTE] Tatraiva (lit. "there itself") is debated: does it mean the eighth house or the kendra mentioned earlier? The next clause resolves it: if Lagna lord also joins the 8th lord (and a malefic) in the 8th house, short life results. Final interpretation: 8th lord + Lagna lord + functional malefic all together in 8th = short life.
Verse 3 — Saturn and 10th Lord
"Evam hi salilna chinta karyatarkairvichakshnaih. Karmadipena ca tathaa chintanam karyamaayushah."
Translation: "Similarly, discriminating scholars should judge Saturn and the 10th lord in the same way."
Substitution rule: Replace Lagna lord → 10th lord; replace 8th lord → Saturn. If Saturn + 10th lord + functional malefic together in 8th = short life.
Verse 4 — Viparita Raja Yoga → Long Life
(6th/12th lord in 6th, 8th, 12th, or Lagna → long life)
[!IMPORTANT] Viparita Raja Yoga (a bad-house lord placed in a bad house = good result) in the Rasi chart confers long life, though it may be a life of struggle or hardship. Sixth or twelfth lord placed in:
- 6th, 8th, or 12th house → long life (classic Viparita Raja Yoga)
- Lagna → long life but full of struggle (6th/12th struggle-lords in Lagna = person embodies the struggle; lives long but suffers)
Verse 5 — Lagna/8th lord in Own Sign, Own Navamsa, or Friendly Sign
"Svasthāne svāṁśake vāpi mitreṣe mitra-mandire. Dīrghāyuṣaṁ karoti eva lagneśo 'ṣṭamapaḥ punaḥ."
Translation: "The Lagna lord or 8th lord in own sign, or own navamsa, or in a friendly sign, confers long life."
[!NOTE] One word (mitreṣe) appears grammatically corrupt in this verse. The teacher notes this as likely textual corruption. Core meaning is intact: Lagna lord or 8th lord needs to be in a strong position (own/friendly sign, or strong navamsa) to guarantee long life. Navamsa is relevant because strength there indicates good karmic blessings from past lives protecting the key longevity planets.
Verse 6 — Four Key Planets in Kendra/Trikona/11th
"Lagna Astama pa karmesha mandaha kendra trikonayo labheva sansritah… dirghamayusam."
Translation: "The lords of Lagna and 8th, 10th lord, and Saturn — when [some/several of] them are placed in kendras, trikonas, or the 11th house — that combination gives long life."
[!TIP] The 11th house is explicitly included. Teacher interpretation: 2–3 of these 4 planets in kendra/trikona/11th = long life. The 11th of gains is included because a planet there can fulfil gains (including the "gain" of longevity) related to its agenda.
Verse 7 — Synthesizing All Indicators
"Evam bahuvidha vidvan nayur yoga prakirtitah. Esu yo balavan tasya anusarad ayur adishet."
Translation: "Thus, O wise one, many longevity combinations are well known. Among them, whichever is strongest — judge the longevity according to that."
[!IMPORTANT] This is a meta-principle: Parashara taught many longevity indicators. One must assess the relative strength of all four key planets and see their interplay — who "calls the shots" — and then judge. This is not thumb-rule application but holistic discrimination.
Verse 8 — Exalted Lagna Lord + Moon in 11th + Jupiter in 8th
"Lagnese svotya rasishte chandre labhasamenvite. Randhra sthana gate jive dirghamayurnna samsayah."
Translation: "Lagna lord in exaltation; Moon in the 11th; Jupiter in the 8th — definitely long life, no doubt."
[!NOTE] Jupiter is called jiva (life-force). Though he is not the primary karaka of longevity (that is Saturn), Jupiter's placement in the 8th, Lagna, or 10th house blesses that house with life-force. Teacher extends: Jupiter in Lagna or 10th also confers long life; the verse singles out 8th house as the most difficult, to show that even there Jupiter can protect longevity.
Verse 9 — Extremely Strong Lagna Lord Saves the Chart
"Lagnesho atibali dushtaha kendra samsthaihi subagrahaihi. Dhanai sarvagunai sartham dirghamayuh prayachhati."
Translation: "If the Lagna lord is extremely strong (atibali) and is aspected by functional benefics placed in quadrants, the native will have wealth, excellent qualities, and a long life."
[!TIP] The Lagna lord is the most important of the four longevity planets. If he is extremely strong, even weakness in other indicators may be overcome. The aspect of functional benefics from kendras gives additional support ("good guys watching over the Lagna lord").
Short-Life Combinations
Verse A — 8th lord in Kendra + Very Weak Lagna Lord
"Aṣṭamāśipatoḥ kendre lagneshe balavajjite. Viṁśatvarṣāṇ yaḥ sau jīvet dwātriṁśat parama āyuṣam."
Translation: "If the 8th lord is in a kendra and the Lagna lord is very weak — the native lives 20 years; maximum 32 years."
[!WARNING] The 8th lord in a kendra is ambiguous — normally good for longevity, but if the Lagna lord is extremely weak, the 8th lord in a prominent place may only ensure the person survives long enough to experience the 8th house's difficulties before dying young. 20–32 years given as the range; take these as indicative (not exact).
Verse B — 8th lord Debilitated + 8th house with Malefic + Weak Lagna lord
"Randhrēṣe nīca rāśisthē randhrē pāpagrahairyutē. Lagneshe durbalē jantur alpāyur bhavati dhruvam."
Translation: "8th lord in debilitation sign, 8th house occupied by functional malefic, Lagna lord weak — that native is definitely short-lived."
Verse C — 8th lord AND 8th house Hammered by Malefics + 12th has Natural Malefic → Infant Mortality
"Randhese papa sanjukte randhe papagrahe dyute yaye kuragrahakarante jatamattram mrutirbhavet."
Translation: "8th lord afflicted by malefic, 8th house with malefic, and natural malefic in the 12th — death immediately upon birth (infant mortality)."
Verse D — Functional Malefics in Kendras/Trikonas, Benefics in 6th/8th + 8th lord Debilitated in Lagna
(Functional malefics in quadrants/trines; functional benefics in 6th/8th; 8th lord debilitated in Lagna → instant death)
[!NOTE] This verse appears astronomically impossible as written (no Lagna can have its 8th lord debilitated in it under whole-sign houses). Possible explanations: (1) textual corruption; (2) non-whole-sign house system; (3) typo — should read "8th lord in Lagna along with a debilitated planet." Teacher leaves the interpretation open.
Verse E — 5th house + 8th lord both with Functional Malefics + 8th house with Malefic → Short Life
"Panchame papasamyukte randhese papasamyukte randhe papagrahe vyukte swalpamayush prajayate."
Translation: "5th house with functional malefic, 8th lord afflicted, 8th house with malefic — short life."
[!NOTE] The 5th house (Purva Punya) appears here. Afflictions to the 5th house rob the native of karmic merit from past lives, which is also a longevity resource. The 5th is not merely about children and mantras — it is the store of protective punya. This combination is short life (not infant mortality).
Verse F — 8th lord in 8th + Moon with Malefic (no benefic aspect) → Death Within a Month
"Randhese randhra rasishte chandre papasamenvite. Shubhadrushti vihinesa masante cha mrutirbhavet."
Translation: "8th lord in 8th house, Moon with functional malefic and without any benefic aspect — death within a month."
[!IMPORTANT] The Moon is the karaka of the body's sustenance and the manas (mind). Even if 8th lord is strong in own house, a badly afflicted unprotected Moon can pull the lifespan down. Moon as an independent longevity significator must be noted separately.

🧘 Long-Life Example: Swami Chandrasekarendra Saraswati
Birth data: 20 May 1894, 1:22 PM IST (UTC+5:30) Place: 79°32′E, 11°57′N (Villupuram area, South India) Lived approximately: ~100 years (passed away 1994 or 1995)
| Longevity Planet | Placement | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| ☉ Lagna lord (Sun) | In kendra, with functional benefic Jupiter (5th lord) and functional malefic Mercury (2nd+11th lord) — net: functional benefic Jupiter balances Mercury → fine, ~65% strength | |
| ♃ 8th lord (Jupiter) | In kendra; through Parivartana with Venus, acts as though in own house → strong; not really afflicted | |
| ♀ 10th lord (Venus) | Exalted in 8th house — not a Parashara-listed favorable house, but not afflicted; through Parivartana with Jupiter, effectively in own sign → neutral to strong | |
| ♄ Saturn | In 2nd house (friendly sign — Mitra mandira); Vargottama; 73% strength in Dasa-Varga; aspected by Mars (half), Sun (half), and Jupiter (full) — 2½ functional benefics aspecting → strong |
[!TIP] The verse specifically mentions Mitra mandira for Saturn — this chart satisfies that condition. Saturn in a friendly sign (Mercury's sign here) is explicitly cited by Parashara as conferring long life.
Navamsa: Saturn, Sun, Jupiter, Venus all not in own navamsa; navamsa strength applies and all four are strong there too.
Result: All 4 longevity planets reasonably to strongly placed. Long life confirmed — ~100 years.
💀 Short-Life Example: Hanuman
Birth data: 25 November 1976, 9:30 AM IST (UTC+5:30) Place: Secunderabad, India (78°30′E, 17°27′N) Lagna: Sagittarius ♐ Lived: ~18–20 years
| Longevity Planet | Placement | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| ♃ Lagna lord (Jupiter) | In 6th house (Dusthana), inimical sign; Parivartana with 8th lord Moon = Dur Yoga (exchange of Lagna lord with 8th lord is inauspicious, not Raja Yoga) → very weak | |
| ☽ 8th lord (Moon) | In Lagna (kendra, friendly sign — seemingly good), but afflicted by Venus (6th+11th lord = functional malefic); also Gulika and Mandi present → weak/neutral | |
| ☿ 10th lord (Mercury) | In 12th house (Dusthana) with Sun and Mars — weak placement → weak | |
| ♄ Saturn | In 8th house (Cancer — inimical sign), alone (no association) → weak; only saving grace |
Navamsa: Saturn in Swamsa (own navamsa) — extremely strong; Jupiter debilitated in navamsa — further weakening; Moon also not strong.
[!WARNING] Three of four longevity planets are weak. Only Saturn shows longevity potential, and even he is in an inimical sign and alone in the 8th. Moon–Venus combination dominates (both in Lagna; Venus disposes Lagna lord Jupiter) — this combination curtails life.
Verse A applies: 8th lord (Moon) in kendra + Lagna lord (Jupiter) extremely weak → 20–32 years → confirms ~18–20 years.
Dasha at death: Kshema Vimshottari Dasha — running Jupiter Dasha (the very weak Lagna lord).
[!IMPORTANT] Propitiation recommendation: If this person had come early in life, Saturn would have been the only planet to propitiate to extend life from "short" toward "middle life." Saturn (Vargottama in navamsa) was the sole strong longevity indicator. Propitiating Saturn might have shifted the life from ~20 years toward the 32-year upper range given by Parashara.

🌙 Dasha–Transit Synergy: Nakshatra Progression Technique
[!IMPORTANT] New technique introduced: When analyzing transits in combination with Vimshottari Dasha, instead of counting transit planets' Taras from the natal Moon nakshatra, count from the progress Moon nakshatra (= the nakshatra of the current Dasha lord's group).
The Principle
| Standard Method | Nakshatra Progression Method |
|---|---|
| Count Janma Tara, Sampat Tara, etc. from natal Moon nakshatra | Count Janma Tara, Sampat Tara, etc. from the nakshatra corresponding to the current Dasha |
| Fixed throughout life | Shifts as Dashas progress |
| 10,000-foot level (Panchanga) | More personalized; syncs Dasha and transit |
Rationale: Vimshottari Dasha is a progression of the Moon. When born with Moon in Anuradha (Saturn nakshatra), during Saturn Dasha the Moon is still "in" Anuradha. But when Mercury Dasha begins, the progress Moon has moved to Jeshtha (a Mercury nakshatra). To assess transits correctly during Mercury Dasha, count Taras from Jeshtha, not Anuradha.
Nakshatra Groups (Vimshottari)
| Dasha Lord | Nakshatras (group of 3) |
|---|---|
| ♄ Saturn | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadra |
| ☿ Mercury | Aslesha, Jeshtha, Revati |
| ☋ Ketu | Ashwini, Magha, Moola |
| ♀ Venus | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha |
| ☉ Sun | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha |
| ☽ Moon | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana |
| ♂ Mars | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| ☊ Rahu | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha |
| ♃ Jupiter | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadra |
Worked Example: Swami Chandrasekarendra Saraswati — Renunciation (Feb 1907)
Event: Receives Diksha, renounces, becomes Mathadipati of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. Birth Moon nakshatra: Anuradha (Saturn's nakshatra) Dasha at event: Mercury Dasha–Mars Antardasha (1907) Progress Moon nakshatra: Jeshtha (Mercury's nakshatra = "Janma Tara" for this period)
| Transit Planet | Nakshatra at Event | Tara from Jeshtha | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| ☋ Ketu | Uttarashada (Sun) | Sampat Tara (2nd) | Abundance, auspicious; Karaka for Moksha & renunciation |
| ♄ Saturn | Purva Bhadra (Jupiter) | Mitra Tara (3rd) | Friendly tara; Karaka for renunciation, Vairagya |
| ☊ Rahu | Pushya (Saturn) | Param Mitra Tara | Excellent; supports |
| ♃ Jupiter | Ardra (Rahu) | Vipat Tara | Unfavorable (but 3 of 4 slow planets are excellent) |
[!TIP] Three of four slow-moving planets (Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) have excellent transits from the progress Moon nakshatra (Jeshtha). Jupiter alone is in Vipat Tara. The renunciation event is perfectly supported by these three malefics (which are the natural Sanyasa significators). This confirms the technique: transits assessed from progress Moon nakshatra are more meaningful than from natal Moon nakshatra.

🪐 Transit Q&A — Saturn Ashtama & Yogakaraka Behavior
Saturn as Yogakaraka Transiting 8th from Moon
Question: If Saturn is a Yogakaraka (4th + 5th lord) in the natal chart, but is transiting the 8th house from Moon (Ashtama Shani) — what results?
[!IMPORTANT] Key principle: Every planet has two faces — its natal agenda (what good/bad it shows based on lordship and position) and its karaka nature (universal significations). Saturn is the karaka of trouble, setbacks, limitations, and 8th-house themes regardless of its natal agenda.
| During Ashtama Shani | Result |
|---|---|
| Saturn's 4th/5th house Yogakaraka results | Suppressed — cannot manifest because transit is bad |
| Saturn's innate karaka results (delays, difficulties, 8th house themes) | Accentuated |
| When Saturn is in 11th, 3rd, or 6th from Moon | 4th/5th house good results can manifest |
Ardhaashtama Shani: Saturn transiting 4th from Moon = Kantaka Shani — also unfavorable; student correctly raises this.
Murti modifier for transit propitiation:
- Lohamurthi (iron): Very difficult to propitiate; bad results hard to suppress
- Tamramurthi (copper) or Rajatamurthi (silver) or Swarnamurthi (gold): More receptive; prayers can suppress negative transit results
Conditional Dasha Lord's Transit
Question: Should one consider the transit of the Conditional Dasha lord (not just Vimshottari)?
[!TIP] Yes. Whatever Dasha system is controlling the native's life most strongly — look at the transit of that Dasha's lord in addition to the Vimshottari lord. The transit of the ruling Dasha planet is more important than the standard Vimshottari lord's transit if the conditional Dasha is more active for that native.
Generic Transit Rule
When a planet has a favorable transit house position (e.g., Rahu in 6th from Moon = excellent transit), what specific results does it give?
The results correspond to that planet's natal agenda in the individual's chart — not generic. Rahu in 6th from Moon for Person A (Rahu shows winning over enemies in their chart) = victory over enemies. For Person B (Rahu shows money) = financial gain. The same transit gives different results to different people.
🔬 Debilitated Planet in Rasi vs. Divisional Chart
Question: If a planet is debilitated in Rasi but gives Raja Yoga in Dasamsa — do Rasi results cancel Dasamsa results?
[!IMPORTANT] Decouple Rasi and divisional chart results for different domains:
- Rasi = physical, material, external experience
- Dasamsa = career, professional standing
- Vimshamsha = spiritual practice and attainment
- Navamsa = dharma, inner nature, spouse
Practical rule: A planet debilitated in Rasi will give physical weakness, unhappiness, or dissatisfaction related to its Karaka themes. The same planet giving Raja Yoga in Dasamsa will give career success and power when its Dasha runs. These are simultaneous — the successful politician who is internally unhappy.
Caveat (from student's observation): If Rasi 10th house is also weak, the career success from Dasamsa Raja Yoga becomes unlikely anyway — the Rasi is the seed. Dasamsa is the crop. Both must be considered.
Example — Swami Chandrasekarendra Saraswati:
- Moon debilitated in 4th house (Rasi) → Sukhaloka (lack of comfort physically) — despite great following, he may not have taken care of bodily comfort; always traveling with followers
- Moon in Vimshamsha: 5th lord (Purva Punya, mantra) + Mars (9th lord + Lagna lord dispositor) → brilliant Raja Yoga from Lagna, Paaka Lagna, and Arudha Lagna → mantra siddhi, massive following
- Moon Dasha gave: enormous following, mantra siddhi, while simultaneously the physical body was less comfortable
☊ Rahu Raja Yoga — Simha & Kanya Lagna
Source: Rahu's 108 names: Janma Simha Rajyada and Janma Kanya Rajyada
| Verse | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Janma Simha Rajyada | If Lagna (Janma) is Leo (Simha) and Rahu is in Leo = giver of kingdom/power (Raja Yoga) |
| Janma Kanya Rajyada | If Lagna is Virgo (Kanya) and Rahu is in Virgo = giver of kingdom/power |
[!NOTE] Scope: The verses specifically say Janma (birth/Lagna), meaning Rahu must be in the Lagna sign itself (Leo or Virgo) for this Raja Yoga to apply. Some extend it to Cancer (Rahu "charges up" even in an inimical sign — like a mafia leader invading a police inspector's house), but this is not directly stated in the verse.
[!WARNING] This Raja Yoga applies even if Rahu is a functional malefic for that Lagna (e.g., Kanya Lagna → Rahu as 6th lord = malefic). The specific verse overrides the general functional malefic principle in this instance — Parashara explicitly names these two Lagnas.
