🕉️ Class 65 — Alcoholism Chart, Dasa Mahavidya & Divisional Charts for Addiction and Spirituality
A practical class centering on a listener-submitted chart (alcoholism case, rectified from Leo to Cancer lagna). The analysis introduces key indicators for addiction in Jyotish, the use of D-11 (Rudramsa) and D-30 (Trimshamsha), and the Palana Devata technique. Leads into a comprehensive teaching on the Dasa Mahavidya — the ten Divine Mother forms mapped to the nine planets + Lagna — with conditions for when their worship is effective. A student's chart (Tejas P — same as Class 63) is used to verify Kali-worship indicators. Parivrajaka Yoga and Tapasvi Yoga combinations are discussed.

🍶 Chart: Alcoholism Case — Leo vs Cancer Lagna {#alcoholism-chart}
Submitted data: 24 Feb 1957, 5:56 PM IST, Karaikudi, India (78°47'E, 10°04'N)
Recorded lagna: Leo rising (as given) Rectified lagna: Cancer (~26 minutes earlier; ~5:30 PM)
Case context: Native's child submitted the chart saying father has been alcoholic throughout his life, especially from 1989 onward (intensifying 1992–1995), with health problems after that.
Why Leo lagna doesn't work
With Leo lagna:
- Moon is in the 5th house (trine) — strong, aspected by Jupiter (5th lord) → Moon is not afflicted
- 5th house: no malefic aspect except minor Rahu aspect
- Jupiter in 2nd house (8th lord in 2nd) — not really giving bad habits for Leo
- Saturn role is not showing strongly enough to give alcoholism
Why Cancer lagna works
| Factor | Cancer Lagna Result |
|---|---|
| Moon | In 6th house (Shadripu) — shows weakness/affliction |
| 5th house | Afflicted by Rahu and Saturn |
| Rahu | Atmakaraka; afflicting 5th house; in 11th house in Rudramsa (point of attack) |
| Saturn | In 8th house from Cancer lagna |
| 2nd lord (Sun) | In 8th house — bad habits related to consumption |
| Mars Dasha from 1989 | Alcoholism begins; Mars is dispositor of Saturn |
[!NOTE] Birth time rectification principle: When the given birth time chart does not align with known facts (here, a major addiction), rectify the chart so the known facts make astrological sense. A 26-minute difference is not unusual — mothers are occupied during delivery.
🌊 Key Indicators for Addiction in Jyotish {#addiction-indicators}
For alcoholism specifically:
flowchart TD
A["Afflicted Moon\n(6th or 8th house; OR\naspected/conjunct malefics)"]
B["Saturn's role\n(Saturn = planet of alcoholism/addiction;\nmust be connected to afflicting Moon\nor 5th house)"]
C["5th house afflicted\n(chitta/wisdom/judgment;\nRahu or Saturn afflicting it)"]
D["2nd lord in 8th\n(bad habits related to consumption)"]
E["Atmakaraka = Rahu\n(Nija Dosha — inherent flaw)]"]
A --> |"Primary condition"| Addiction
B --> |"Specific to alcohol"| Addiction
C --> |"Weakens discrimination"| Addiction
D --> |"Eating/drinking habits"| Addiction
E --> |"Confirms at soul level"| Addiction
Priority:
- Moon must be afflicted — connected to 6th/8th house, aspected by malefics, OR in signs of Saturn/Mars
- Saturn must play a role (as karaka for alcohol)
- 5th house (chitta, wisdom, judgment) should be weakened
Addiction in general (not just alcohol):
- Each type of addiction = a Shadripu (six weaknesses) — identified by which planet is badly placed in D-11 or D-30
- Venus badly placed in D-11 → weakness for women/pleasure
- Saturn in D-11 (in 6th/11th house of weakness) → addiction to alcohol/depressants
[!TIP] Always apply factors one by one: first Moon in 6th, then add Jupiter's aspect, then add Rahu's aspect, etc. Do not jump to combined scenarios without establishing each factor first.
📊 Divisional Charts for Addiction & Weakness {#divisional-charts}
| Divisional Chart | Purpose |
|---|---|
| D-11 (Rudramsa) | Weaknesses (Shadripu); where you will be attacked; sixth and eleventh houses critical |
| D-30 (Trimshamsha) | Weaknesses; strengths; type of affliction |
| D-6 (Shashthamsa) | Diseases that manifest from the weakness/addiction |
| D-13 | Strengths and weaknesses (general) |
Jaimini on D-11 (Rudramsa):
"Tanavatanadandahara" — The 6th house and the 6th from the 6th (= 11th house) are the two most dangerous positions in any chart. These are where the person will be attacked and will pay the price.
[!WARNING] The 11th house, while seemingly good (friends, gains, fulfillment), is simultaneously one of the most punishing at the deeper/spiritual level. Parashara considers it highly malefic for this reason. The material benefits are low compared to the spiritual damage possible.
For this chart (Cancer lagna):
- Saturn in D-11 → 6th house → alcoholism is the primary weakness
- Rahu (Atmakaraka) → 11th house in Rudramsa → point where the native is most vulnerable to attack
🌙 Moon in 6th vs 11th House — Distinction {#moon-placement}
| Moon Position | Effect |
|---|---|
| 6th house | Very bad — Moon (nourishment, compassion) placed in house of Mars-Saturn nature (fighting, conflict). The nurturing quality is killed. Shows Bala Rishta or clear weakness. Strongly indicates addiction/affliction. |
| 8th house | Marana Karaka Sthana for Moon — even worse than 6th in terms of survival issues |
| 11th house | Not bad for addiction per se; the 11th shows how you will be punished, not addiction itself |
| 12th house | Also problematic — isolation, hidden matters |
"Moon shows nourishment. In the sixth house, you place that which nurtures you in a house where Mars and Saturn fight. It will kill that Moon. It is not good."
🙏 Palana Devata — Finding the Healer {#palana-devata}
"Palana Devata" = the deity that governs sustenance/nourishment for the person. Distinct from Ishta Devata (which is for Moksha).
Method:
- Find the Amatyakaraka (planet with 2nd highest degree)
- Count the 6th house from the Amatyakaraka in the Navamsa chart
- Identify which planet(s) are strongest in that 6th house
- That planet = Palana Devata
- Cross-verify by checking if that planet appears prominently in connection to the 4th house (of healing) in the Rashi chart
For this chart (Cancer lagna, Cancer = Atmakaraka Rahu):
- Amatyakaraka = Mercury
- 6th from Mercury in Navamsa = Capricorn → contains Saturn, Sun, Ketu
- Saturn is the strongest (own house in Capricorn)
- Rashi chart: 4th lord = Venus; Venus in Capricorn (Saturn-ruled) → connecting factor = Saturn
- Palana Devata = Kali (Saturn's divine form)
Ishta Devata method (for comparison):
- Use D-9 (Navamsa); look at 12th from Atmakaraka → that planet's deity = Ishta Devata
- Ishta Devata = for Moksha/liberation path
- Palana Devata = for sustenance/healing at the material level
🌺 Dasa Mahavidya — The Ten Divine Mothers {#dasa-mahavidya}
The nine planets + Lagna are each mapped to one of the Dasa Mahavidyas (Ten Great Cosmic Powers / Ten Divine Mothers). Like the Dasa Avatara of Vishnu for the planets, these are the ten tantric forms of the Divine Mother.
| Planet / Point | Mahavidya | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Matangi (also: Uchishta Chandali, Shyamala) | Goddess of speech; speech = adulterated thought; her symbol = parrot (closest mimic of human voice) |
| Moon | Bhuvaneshvari | — |
| Mars | Bagalamukhi | — |
| Mercury | Tripurasundari (also: Raja Rajeshvari, Lalita) | — |
| Jupiter | Tara (also: Eka Jata, Ugra Tara, Smashana Tara) | — |
| Venus | Kamalatmika | — |
| Saturn | Kali (also: Maha Kali, Bhadra Kali, Smashana Kali) | Time itself; delimits space-time; warps and ends time |
| Rahu | Chinnamasta | Force of electric thunderbolt; mantra: Vajra Velochini |
| Ketu | Dhumavati | — |
| Lagna | Tripurabhairavi (Bhairavi) | — |
Key Philosophical Notes on Mahavidyas
Kali = Time (Kali = time); she delimits and causes intervals; has the ability to warp and end time. That is why she destroys.
Chinnamasta = Force of electric thunderbolt; acts at one moment with tremendous force. Her mantra is Vajra Velochini.
Matangi = Higher form of Saraswati; represents speech. Speech = Uccishta (outcast) because it is an adulterated/transformed version of pristine thought. By the time thought becomes words, it undergoes tremendous transformation. The parrot is her symbol (closest bird to human voice).

Important: Avoid popular Western descriptions of Kali ("dark one," etc.) — these are degraded versions without tantric depth.
✅ Conditions for Effective Dasa Mahavidya Worship {#mahavidya-conditions}
Based on Pandit Sanjay Rath's paper on Dasa Mahavidya (available on Sohamsa group):
Jal Tattva conditions (key for Divine Mother worship in general): The planets of Jal Tattva = Moon and Venus.
For Dasa Mahavidya worship to be strongly effective, the following should be present:
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| 1. Rashi Lagna influence | Moon and/or Venus should influence (aspect, conjoin, or have Kartari on) the Rashi Lagna |
| 2. D-20 Lagna influence | Moon and/or Venus should influence (be in, aspect, or Kartari) the Vimshamsha (D-20) Lagna |
| 3. Navamsa — 4th from AK | Moon and/or Venus in the 4th house from the Atmakaraka in Navamsa |
If all three conditions are met → person is already blessed by the Divine Mother and their prayers will be more easily answered.
Special significance of the 4th from AK in Navamsa:
"Fourth house shows the mother and blessings. If either Moon or Venus is in the 4th from Atmakaraka in Navamsa, the person is already blessed — just as Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Vivekananda both had Moon or Venus in the 4th from Atmakaraka."
Axis of power: Virgo-Pisces (Venus exaltation and watery sign) and Scorpio-Taurus (Moon's exaltation axis) are especially powerful for these conditions.
Which Mahavidya to worship:
- Saturn connection → Kali (primary for alcoholism remedy)
- Mercury as Palana → Tripurasundari / Raja Rajeshvari
- 12th from Atmakaraka having Mercury → also Tripurasundari
- Venus → Kamalatmika
Forms of Kali Worship (levels)
| Level | Practice | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Sattvic (accessible) | Pray to Bhadrakali as protective mother: "Mother, please take care of me." | None — safe for all |
| Intermediate | Friday visits to Kali temple; home prayer with picture | Basic devotion |
| Tantric (advanced) | Specific colors, ritual offerings, midnight japas | Initiation from qualified guru required |
| Extreme | Smashana Kali at cremation ground, midnight, with skull | Only for the most advanced; initiation essential |
"Even if the person is an alcoholic, you don't ask him to accept he's an alcoholic. Just say: 'Dad, come with me to Kali temple.' That's the start. Plant the seed."
📊 Student Chart: Tejas P — Verifying Kali Indicators {#tejas-chart}
Data: 26 May 1988, 7:27:54 AM IST, Secunderabad (78°30'E, 17°27'N)
Context: Young man deeply engaged in Kali Upasana. Verifying the Mahavidya conditions.
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
| Rashi Lagna | Venus IN Lagna (Gemini); Moon in 4th house aspecting Lagna → Moon + Venus both influence Lagna ✓ |
| D-20 Lagna | Moon AND Venus both in D-20 Lagna ✓ |
| 4th from AK in Navamsa | AK = Jupiter; Jupiter and Mars in Parivarthana in Navamsa; Moon is in 4th from Mars's position (through exchange) ✓ (less strict application) |
All three conditions substantially met → Kali worship confirmed as appropriate and effective.
Further Mahavidya analysis for Tejas:
- Amatyakaraka = Sun; 6th from Sun in Navamsa = Mercury's sign → Tripurasundari (Raja Rajeshvari) also indicated
- 12th from AK (Jupiter) also shows Mercury → Tripurasundari strongly indicated
- Saturn-Moon combination in Rashi, Navamsa, and D-20 → Kali worship confirmed
- Conclusion: person capable of broad Dasa Mahavidya worship; strong Kali affinity; also future inclination toward Raja Rajeshvari
🙏 Parivrajaka Yoga & Tapasvi Yoga {#renunciation}
Tapasvi Yoga
Combination: Saturn + Venus + Ketu together or strongly connected Meaning: Ability to sit in one place and do intense sustained work (not just spiritual — can be any domain requiring extreme focus and endurance)
"A workaholic director working 18 hours a day in Hollywood also has Tapasvi Yoga. It's not just spiritual."
Parivrajaka Yoga (Renunciation)
Reference: Jyotish Digest — complete article on Parivrajaka Yoga (also written as Parivraja Yoga)
Key combinations:
- Four planets in one house — especially in D-20 (Vimshamsha)
- Saturn-Moon combination (Moon afflicted by Saturn)
- Moon afflicted by Saturn or Mars in signs owned by Saturn or Mars
Planets involved:
- Saturn → determination, isolation, depression → spiritual turning point
- Mars → agitation, desperation → drive for renunciation ("I don't want to be here")
- Both together → most powerful combination for renunciation
Check in: Rashi chart, Navamsa, AND D-20 — must be visible in all three.
🌑 Depression vs Addiction — Distinguishing Moon Afflictions {#depression}
| Condition | Key Indicator |
|---|---|
| Addiction | Moon in 6th or 8th house; Saturn playing a role; 5th house afflicted |
| Depression | Moon afflicted specifically by Saturn (or Mars); Moon in signs of Saturn or Mars |
| Renunciation impulse | Moon afflicted by both Saturn and Mars repeatedly; seen in Rashi + Navamsa + D-20 |
| Pravrajya (spiritual renunciation) | Parivrajaka Yoga combinations (4 planets in 1 house in D-20; Saturn-Moon) |
"For depression, Moon has to be afflicted by Saturn or especially by Saturn. Moon in the eighth house is Marana Karaka Sthana. Moon afflicted and in signs of Saturn or Mars — this is also an important combination for Pravrajya or renunciation."
Moon in 11th house: Not bad for addiction; the 11th shows how punishment comes to you, not the addiction itself.
