Class resumes Arishta Adhyaya, Chapter 9 in Santhanam's edition of BPHS. The previous class ended at verse 16. This class covers verses 17–30, focusing on:

⚠️ Verse 17: Lagna & Seventh with Two Malefics + Afflicted Moon

Lagna saptama gaụ pāpau chandrō'pikrūra samyutaḥ. Yadā nāvekṣitaḥ saumyaiḥ. Śīghrān mṛtyur bhaveṭ tadā.

Conditions:

1. Two malefics in Lagna and/or Seventh house (dual form pāpau)
2. Moon is also conjoined (samyuta) with malefics
3. No benefic aspects (nāvekṣitaḥ saumyaiḥ) on Moon (grammar implies Moon specifically, not Lagna/Seventh)

Result: Quick (śīghrān) death — premature death.

[!NOTE] Pāpau is the Sanskrit dual form — specifically two malefics. PVR notes this is ambiguous: it could mean two malefics total in both houses, or one malefic each in Lagna and Seventh. Both interpretations are valid.

Grammatical Note: The word nāvekṣitaḥ (not seen/aspected) uses masculine singular, indicating the subject is Moon (chandraḥ) alone — not Lagna/Seventh. So no benefic aspect is required only for Moon.

🌙 Verse 18: Waning Moon in Lagna + Malefics in Kendras/8th

Kshine sasini lagna sthe papaih kendrastha samsthite yo jato mrutyum apnoti sa vipreshana samsayah.

Result: Death — "O lord of Brahmins, there is no doubt in it."

[!IMPORTANT] Samsthita means occupying — malefics aspecting the kendras is NOT sufficient. They must occupy those houses.

Interpretation of "kendras + 8th": PVR notes all five houses (1, 4, 7, 10, 8) having malefics is nearly impossible. He recommends requiring at least 2–3 of these five houses to be occupied by malefics.

Key Principle on Paksha Bala:

"Whether Moon is waxing or waning is very important in deciding the strength of Moon. It decides whether Moon is a benefic or malefic. Paksha Bala is critical."

🌗 Verse 19: Moon with Papakartari in 1/7/8/12

Papayormadhyagaschandro Lagnashtantimasaptamah Aciranmrutyumapnoti yo jatah Sasisustattah.

Condition: Moon has Papakartari Yoga AND is in one of these houses: 1, 7, 8, or 12.

Why these four houses?

Why 12th specifically for Moon? Moon = pranas/life force. Twelfth house = house of letting go, compromise, loss. Moon in 12th means the life force is compromised. Add Papakartari and the problem is compounded.

[!NOTE] Moon in the 10th with Papakartari is also bad — but not necessarily life-threatening. It may show problems in conducting one's karma. Only in 1/7/8/12 does it become life-threatening.

💀 Verse 20: Moon in Lagna with Papakartari + Malefic in 7th or 8th — Mother Dies

Papadvaya madhyagate chandre lagna-samashrite saptaaste men papena matra saha mrta shishu.

Result: Both the child and mother die (matra saha mrta shishu).

Why does the mother die?

• Malefic in 7th or 8th from Lagna = 4th-house Argala or 5th-house Argala from 4th (the house of mother)
• Malefic Marakas from Moon are also active

"If Moon has serious afflictions, especially if the Maraka sthanas from Moon are badly afflicted, there can be problems to mother also."

🪐 Verse 21: Saturn, Sun, Mars in 8th/9th/12th — No Benefic Aspect

Shanai chararka bhawmeshu rispa dharmaaste meshu cha. Shubhai raviksha maneshu yo jaato nidhans gata.

Condition: Saturn, Sun, and Mars collectively placed in the 8th, 9th, and 12th houses (any permutation — not necessarily one each in specific houses), without benefic aspect.

Result: Short life (nidhana gata — gone to death).

[!NOTE] PVR notes Parasara does NOT use kramat (respectively) here, so Saturn need not be in 12th, Sun in 9th, Mars in 8th specifically. Any distribution of these three in those three houses (any permutation) qualifies.

🌑 Verse 22: Waning Moon in Vilagna + Dreshkana Malefic + 7th Malefic

Yadresh kane cha ya mitre yasya ya daruno graha kshina chandro vilagnastha sajyo harati jivitam.

Condition:

1. Waning Moon (kshina chandro) in Vilagna
2. A malefic in the Dreshkana (D3) occupied by Lagna
3. A malefic in the 7th house in the Rashi chart

Notes on Vilagna: Parashara used the word Vilagna (special/great Lagna) rather than plain Lagna. PVR interprets this as possibly referring to a set of special Lagnas including: Lagna, Hora Lagna, Prana Pada Lagna, and Moola Trikona Lagna.

🔢 Verse 23: All Planets in Apoklimas — Weak

[Sarve graha] bala vivarjita apoklimas sthita

Important: Parasara says samudahrutam (examples given) — these are illustrative figures, not absolute. The principle is: longevity is very low.

Why Apoklimas give results with difficulty:

🌸 Verse 24: Moon Aspected by Three Malefics — Mother in Danger

Tribiḥ pāpagrahaiḥ sutau candramā yadi dṛśyate. Mātṛnāśo bhavet tasya śubha, śubhadraṣṭe śubham vadet.

Result: Destruction of mother (mātṛnāśo).

Mitigation: If benefics also aspect Moon, it is auspicious (the problem is cancelled).

[!NOTE] Parasara does not specify which type of Drishti — PVR suggests Graha Drishti (planetary aspect) is implied.

☠️ Verse 25: Specific Planets in 2nd — Mother Dies After Father

Dhanē rāhur budhaḥ śukraḥ sauriḥ sūryo yadā sthitaḥ. Tasya māturbhavēn mṛtyur mṛte pitari jāyatē.

Condition:

1. Father has already died during the pregnancy
2. Child is born with one of these five planets in the 2nd house: Rāhu, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Sun

Result: Mother also dies (early).

[!WARNING] The probability that one of these five planets occupies the 2nd house is approximately 5/12 — quite common. The limiting factor is the father dying during pregnancy. When that is confirmed, check the 2nd house immediately.

Suggested remedy: Mrityunjaya Homam for the mother.

🌒 Verse 26: Moon in 7th/8th from Malefic + Afflicted + Strong Malefic Aspect

Papa sattamarandhrasthe chandre papasamenvite balibhipapakairdrushte jato bhavati matruh.

Condition:

1. Moon is in the 7th or 8th from at least one malefic (i.e., a malefic is in the 6th or 7th from Moon)
2. Moon is also conjoined (samenvita) by a malefic
3. Very strong (bali) malefics are aspecting Moon

Result: That child kills the mother — meaning is inauspicious/death-bringing for mother.

🍼 Verse 27: Sun Exalted/Debilitated in 7th or 1st — No Mother's Milk

Uccastaho vatha nicastah saptamastho yadā ravihi panahino bhaved bālā ajākṣīreṇa jīvati.

Result: Child lives on goat/animal milk (ajākṣīra) — no mother's milk (separation from mother or inability to breastfeed).

Interpretation: Not literal goat milk — indicates lack of motherly happiness. May show orphaning, physical separation, or mother's inability to nurse.

Class example: A student confirmed he was breastfed on buffalo milk because his mother had a heart problem at his birth — and his chart had this exact combination.

🌙 Verse 28: Fourth from Moon has Malefic in Enemy Sign + No Benefic in Quadrants

Chandra, chandrah czaturthgah papo ripu kshetra yada bhavet. Tada matru vatham kuryat kendraye yadi subho na chet.

Result: Mother dies (matru vatham kuryat).

Note: If mother does not literally die, at minimum there is significant suffering to mother.

👩‍👧 Verse 29: Malefic in 6th and 12th — Problem to Mother; 4th and 10th — Problem to Father

Dwadase ripabhaveshcha yada papagraho bhavet. Tada matur bhayam vidyaat czaturthde dasame pitu.

Logical derivation:

• For mother: 4th house = mother. 6th and 12th from Lagna = 3rd and 9th from 4th. Third house = vitality. Afflicting the vitality axis of mother's house endangers mother.
• For father: 9th house = father. 4th and 10th from Lagna = 8th and 2nd from 9th (longevity axis for father). This is the Maraka/Ayu axis for the father's significator house.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Verse 30: Family Decay Yoga

Lagne kruro. Vyaye kruro. Dhane saumya sthaithaivacha saptame bhavane kroorah. Parivarakshayam karah.

Result: Parivarakshayam karah — one who causes decay of the entire family. Brings misfortune to the family.

[!NOTE] Santhanam interprets saumya in the 2nd house specifically as Mercury. PVR's view: it could be any benefic, but Mercury may specifically be intended because the word saumya (Mercury's epithet) contrasts with krura in the other houses. Both interpretations are valid.

❓ Q&A: Rashi Chart vs. Divisional Chart for Parent Combinations

Q: Are these parent combinations (verses 24–29) to be applied in the Rashi chart?

PVR: Not entirely obvious. Combinations specifically for the child (longevity) are clearly in the Rashi chart. But combinations specifically for parents could be in the Vamshamsa (D12 — chart of parents). Experimentation with examples is the only way to confirm.

🔄 Q&A: Viparita Raja Yoga — Does Exaltation Affect It?

Q: If the 6th lord in the 8th is exalted, does it still give Viparita Raja Yoga?

PVR's answer: Yes — Viparita Raja Yoga works irrespective of the state (exalted, debilitated, Moola Trikona, etc.) of the planet, as long as it is alone (not conjunct other non-dusthana lords).
