🙏 Opening — Resuming BPHS Chapter 9
Class resumes Arishta Adhyaya, Chapter 9 in Santhanam's edition of BPHS. The previous class ended at verse 16. This class covers verses 17–30, focusing on:
- Combinations for early death (continued from verse 16)
- Combinations showing danger to mother
- Combinations showing danger to father
- The family decay yoga
⚠️ Verse 17: Lagna & Seventh with Two Malefics + Afflicted Moon
Lagna saptama gaụ pāpau chandrō'pikrūra samyutaḥ. Yadā nāvekṣitaḥ saumyaiḥ. Śīghrān mṛtyur bhaveṭ tadā.
Conditions:
- Two malefics in Lagna and/or Seventh house (dual form pāpau)
- Moon is also conjoined (samyuta) with malefics
- No benefic aspects (nāvekṣitaḥ saumyaiḥ) on Moon (grammar implies Moon specifically, not Lagna/Seventh)
Result: Quick (śīghrān) death — premature death.
[!NOTE] Pāpau is the Sanskrit dual form — specifically two malefics. PVR notes this is ambiguous: it could mean two malefics total in both houses, or one malefic each in Lagna and Seventh. Both interpretations are valid.
Grammatical Note: The word nāvekṣitaḥ (not seen/aspected) uses masculine singular, indicating the subject is Moon (chandraḥ) alone — not Lagna/Seventh. So no benefic aspect is required only for Moon.
🌙 Verse 18: Waning Moon in Lagna + Malefics in Kendras/8th
Kshine sasini lagna sthe papaih kendrastha samsthite yo jato mrutyum apnoti sa vipreshana samsayah.
| Element | Condition |
|---|---|
| Moon | Waning (kshina) AND in Lagna |
| Sun | Within 0–180° from Moon (waning = Sun is in the half from 0° to 180° measured Moon→Sun) |
| Malefics | Occupying (samsthita, not merely aspecting) Kendras (1/4/7/10) and/or 8th house |
Result: Death — "O lord of Brahmins, there is no doubt in it."
[!IMPORTANT] Samsthita means occupying — malefics aspecting the kendras is NOT sufficient. They must occupy those houses.
Interpretation of "kendras + 8th": PVR notes all five houses (1, 4, 7, 10, 8) having malefics is nearly impossible. He recommends requiring at least 2–3 of these five houses to be occupied by malefics.
Key Principle on Paksha Bala:
"Whether Moon is waxing or waning is very important in deciding the strength of Moon. It decides whether Moon is a benefic or malefic. Paksha Bala is critical."
🌗 Verse 19: Moon with Papakartari in 1/7/8/12
Papayormadhyagaschandro Lagnashtantimasaptamah Aciranmrutyumapnoti yo jatah Sasisustattah.
| Element | Sanskrit | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Papayormadhyagaschandro | Moon gone in middle of pair of malefics | Moon has Papakartari Yoga |
| Lagna | First house | One of the relevant houses |
| Ashta | Eighth house | One of the relevant houses |
| Antima | Twelfth house | One of the relevant houses |
| Saptama | Seventh house | One of the relevant houses |
| Aciranmrutyum | Very quick death | Result |
Condition: Moon has Papakartari Yoga AND is in one of these houses: 1, 7, 8, or 12.
Why these four houses?
flowchart TD
L["Lagna (1st)"] -->|"Defines your essence"| D[Danger to existence]
S["Saptama (7th)"] -->|"Defines interaction with world"| D
A["Ashta (8th)"] -->|"Maraka Karaka Sthana"| D
T["Twelfth (12th)"] -->|"House of letting go / loss"| D
D --> R["Moon afflicted here = Life force weakened = Short life"]
Why 12th specifically for Moon? Moon = pranas/life force. Twelfth house = house of letting go, compromise, loss. Moon in 12th means the life force is compromised. Add Papakartari and the problem is compounded.
[!NOTE] Moon in the 10th with Papakartari is also bad — but not necessarily life-threatening. It may show problems in conducting one's karma. Only in 1/7/8/12 does it become life-threatening.
💀 Verse 20: Moon in Lagna with Papakartari + Malefic in 7th or 8th — Mother Dies
Papadvaya madhyagate chandre lagna-samashrite saptaaste men papena matra saha mrta shishu.
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Moon | In Lagna (lagna-samashrita) |
| Moon | Has Papakartari Yoga (hemmed by two malefics) |
| 7th or 8th house | Has at least one malefic (saptaaste men papena — singular ekavacana) |
Result: Both the child and mother die (matra saha mrta shishu).
Why does the mother die?
- Malefic in 7th or 8th from Lagna = 4th-house Argala or 5th-house Argala from 4th (the house of mother)
- Malefic Marakas from Moon are also active
"If Moon has serious afflictions, especially if the Maraka sthanas from Moon are badly afflicted, there can be problems to mother also."
🪐 Verse 21: Saturn, Sun, Mars in 8th/9th/12th — No Benefic Aspect
Shanai chararka bhawmeshu rispa dharmaaste meshu cha. Shubhai raviksha maneshu yo jaato nidhans gata.
| Planet | Houses mentioned |
|---|---|
| Saturn (Shanai chara) | 12th (rispa), 9th (dharma), or 8th (astama) |
| Sun (Arka) | Same set |
| Mars (Bhauma) | Same set |
Condition: Saturn, Sun, and Mars collectively placed in the 8th, 9th, and 12th houses (any permutation — not necessarily one each in specific houses), without benefic aspect.
Result: Short life (nidhana gata — gone to death).
[!NOTE] PVR notes Parasara does NOT use kramat (respectively) here, so Saturn need not be in 12th, Sun in 9th, Mars in 8th specifically. Any distribution of these three in those three houses (any permutation) qualifies.
🌑 Verse 22: Waning Moon in Vilagna + Dreshkana Malefic + 7th Malefic
Yadresh kane cha ya mitre yasya ya daruno graha kshina chandro vilagnastha sajyo harati jivitam.
Condition:
- Waning Moon (kshina chandro) in Vilagna
- A malefic in the Dreshkana (D3) occupied by Lagna
- A malefic in the 7th house in the Rashi chart
Notes on Vilagna: Parashara used the word Vilagna (special/great Lagna) rather than plain Lagna. PVR interprets this as possibly referring to a set of special Lagnas including: Lagna, Hora Lagna, Prana Pada Lagna, and Moola Trikona Lagna.
🔢 Verse 23: All Planets in Apoklimas — Weak
[Sarve graha] bala vivarjita apoklimas sthita
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
| All planets in Apoklimas (3/6/9/12) | Longevity is very low |
| All planets also weak (bala vivarjita) | Examples given: 2 months or 6 months |
Important: Parasara says samudahrutam (examples given) — these are illustrative figures, not absolute. The principle is: longevity is very low.
Why Apoklimas give results with difficulty:
| House Class | Houses | Planet behavior | Bank account analogy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kendras | 1, 4, 7, 10 | Results with effort | Active account |
| Panapharas | 2, 5, 8, 11 | Results more easily | Retirement account (untouched future) |
| Apoklimas | 3, 6, 9, 12 | Results with great difficulty | Account spent in the past |
🌸 Verse 24: Moon Aspected by Three Malefics — Mother in Danger
Tribiḥ pāpagrahaiḥ sutau candramā yadi dṛśyate. Mātṛnāśo bhavet tasya śubha, śubhadraṣṭe śubham vadet.
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Moon | Aspected (drishyate) by three malefics |
| Benefic alleviation | None — no benefic aspects on Moon |
Result: Destruction of mother (mātṛnāśo).
Mitigation: If benefics also aspect Moon, it is auspicious (the problem is cancelled).
[!NOTE] Parasara does not specify which type of Drishti — PVR suggests Graha Drishti (planetary aspect) is implied.
☠️ Verse 25: Specific Planets in 2nd — Mother Dies After Father
Dhanē rāhur budhaḥ śukraḥ sauriḥ sūryo yadā sthitaḥ. Tasya māturbhavēn mṛtyur mṛte pitari jāyatē.
Condition:
- Father has already died during the pregnancy
- Child is born with one of these five planets in the 2nd house: Rāhu, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Sun
Result: Mother also dies (early).
[!WARNING] The probability that one of these five planets occupies the 2nd house is approximately 5/12 — quite common. The limiting factor is the father dying during pregnancy. When that is confirmed, check the 2nd house immediately.
Suggested remedy: Mrityunjaya Homam for the mother.
🌒 Verse 26: Moon in 7th/8th from Malefic + Afflicted + Strong Malefic Aspect
Papa sattamarandhrasthe chandre papasamenvite balibhipapakairdrushte jato bhavati matruh.
Condition:
- Moon is in the 7th or 8th from at least one malefic (i.e., a malefic is in the 6th or 7th from Moon)
- Moon is also conjoined (samenvita) by a malefic
- Very strong (bali) malefics are aspecting Moon
Result: That child kills the mother — meaning is inauspicious/death-bringing for mother.
🍼 Verse 27: Sun Exalted/Debilitated in 7th or 1st — No Mother's Milk
Uccastaho vatha nicastah saptamastho yadā ravihi panahino bhaved bālā ajākṣīreṇa jīvati.
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sun | In 7th or 1st house (Lagna being Aries or Libra) |
| Sun | Exalted (ucca) or debilitated (nicca) |
Result: Child lives on goat/animal milk (ajākṣīra) — no mother's milk (separation from mother or inability to breastfeed).
Interpretation: Not literal goat milk — indicates lack of motherly happiness. May show orphaning, physical separation, or mother's inability to nurse.
Class example: A student confirmed he was breastfed on buffalo milk because his mother had a heart problem at his birth — and his chart had this exact combination.
🌙 Verse 28: Fourth from Moon has Malefic in Enemy Sign + No Benefic in Quadrants
Chandra, chandrah czaturthgah papo ripu kshetra yada bhavet. Tada matru vatham kuryat kendraye yadi subho na chet.
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| 4th from Moon | Has a malefic in an inimical sign (ripu kshetra) |
| Quadrants from Moon | No benefic planets |
Result: Mother dies (matru vatham kuryat).
Note: If mother does not literally die, at minimum there is significant suffering to mother.
👩👧 Verse 29: Malefic in 6th and 12th — Problem to Mother; 4th and 10th — Problem to Father
Dwadase ripabhaveshcha yada papagraho bhavet. Tada matur bhayam vidyaat czaturthde dasame pitu.
| Malefic in | Problem to |
|---|---|
| 6th and 12th (both required — cha) | Mother |
| 4th and 10th (both required) | Father |
Logical derivation:
- For mother: 4th house = mother. 6th and 12th from Lagna = 3rd and 9th from 4th. Third house = vitality. Afflicting the vitality axis of mother's house endangers mother.
- For father: 9th house = father. 4th and 10th from Lagna = 8th and 2nd from 9th (longevity axis for father). This is the Maraka/Ayu axis for the father's significator house.
👨👩👧👦 Verse 30: Family Decay Yoga
Lagne kruro. Vyaye kruro. Dhane saumya sthaithaivacha saptame bhavane kroorah. Parivarakshayam karah.
| House | Planet |
|---|---|
| Lagna (1st) | Malefic (krura) |
| 12th (vyaya) | Malefic (krura) |
| 2nd (dhana) | Benefic OR Mercury specifically |
| 7th | Malefic (krura) |
Result: Parivarakshayam karah — one who causes decay of the entire family. Brings misfortune to the family.
[!NOTE] Santhanam interprets saumya in the 2nd house specifically as Mercury. PVR's view: it could be any benefic, but Mercury may specifically be intended because the word saumya (Mercury's epithet) contrasts with krura in the other houses. Both interpretations are valid.
❓ Q&A: Rashi Chart vs. Divisional Chart for Parent Combinations
Q: Are these parent combinations (verses 24–29) to be applied in the Rashi chart?
PVR: Not entirely obvious. Combinations specifically for the child (longevity) are clearly in the Rashi chart. But combinations specifically for parents could be in the Vamshamsa (D12 — chart of parents). Experimentation with examples is the only way to confirm.
🔄 Q&A: Viparita Raja Yoga — Does Exaltation Affect It?
Q: If the 6th lord in the 8th is exalted, does it still give Viparita Raja Yoga?
PVR's answer: Yes — Viparita Raja Yoga works irrespective of the state (exalted, debilitated, Moola Trikona, etc.) of the planet, as long as it is alone (not conjunct other non-dusthana lords).
Effect of exaltation:
flowchart LR
D["Debilitated 6th lord in 8th"] -->|Weak reversal| R1["Mild struggle → Mild reversal"]
N["Neutral 6th lord in 8th"] -->|Standard| R2["Moderate struggle → Moderate reversal"]
E["Exalted 6th lord in 8th"] -->|Extreme| R3["Intense struggle → Dramatic reversal (more extreme Viparita)"]
"If the sixth lord is exalted in the eighth, the reversal from obstacles to luck is even more dramatic. The obstacles are more serious AND the luck at the end is also more extreme." — PVR
Caveat: The planet being alone in the dusthana is the key condition. If it is conjunct a non-dusthana lord, the yoga is disrupted.

✨ Yogas and Strengths
| Yoga | Planets | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga | Sun + Mercury in Lagna | Very strong — lords of 9th and 10th (or similar) combined in Lagna |
| Budhaditya Yoga | Sun + Mercury in Lagna | Strong |
| Maha Yogada | Sun and Mercury | All three: Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna occupied by Sun and Mercury → Maha Yogadas |
| Guru Mangal Yoga | Jupiter + Mars in 12th | Strong — though in 12th, Jupiter is vargottama |
| Raja Yoga | Jupiter (Lagna Lord) + Mars (5th Lord) in 12th | Lagna lord + 5th lord together |
Sun specifics:
- In a friendly sign (Jupiter's sign; Sun-Jupiter are abhimitra — best friends)
- Compound relationship: very friendly
- Born just after sunrise → Sun dominates Lagna
Mercury specifics:
- In neutral sign (Jupiter neutral to Mercury), but temporary friendship makes him a friend overall
- Both Sun and Mercury have Vimshopaka strength ~60–69%
- Sun has 4, Mercury has 4 in Ashtavarga
Dasha conflict: Sun in Lagna triggers Shashthi Hani Dasha; Mercury (7th lord) in Lagna triggers Visaptamasa Dasha. PVR's assessment: Shashthi Hani Dasha likely predominates (Sun is very strong, born close to sunrise, and 1/12 probability for Sun in Lagna vs. 1/6 for 7th lord in Lagna).
🔴 Gandanta Analysis
[!WARNING] This chart has three planets in Gandanta simultaneously — a very critical situation.
| Planet | Gandanta depth | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Mars | Deep Gandanta | Most critical — Lagna Lord, Atmakaraka (Saptakaraka), dispositor of Lagna Lord |
| Moon | Last Navamsa Gandanta (26°50′) | Important — in Maraka sthana (8th house); Paksha Bala weakened |
| Saturn | Deepest Gandanta (about to enter Moon's sign) | Retrograde; very disturbed at class time |
Priority of concern:
Mars > Moon > Saturn (Mars most critical because he is Lagna Lord AND Atmakaraka)
Dasha sequence concern:
- Mars Shashthi Hani Dasha: first ~4–5 years of life
- Moon Dasha follows: another ~5 years
"Almost first ten years are not so good, but after that it's excellent." — PVR
Current antardasha at birth: Mars–Rahu (not Mars–Saturn or Mars–Moon, which would be worse)
📊 Divisional Chart Analysis
Shashtamsa (D6 — Health)
| Planet | Placement | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | 8th house | Confirming health concern |
| Mars | 8th house | Both Gandanta planets in 8th in D6 |
Trimshamsa (D30 — Diseases/Suffering)
| Planet | Placement | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | 6th house (Scorpio) | Obstacle/disease house |
| Mars | 6th house | Confirming health problems |
Element analysis in Trimshamsa:
- Mars signs (Aries/Scorpio) = Agni Tattva — transformational energy, digestion, vision
- Rahu/Ketu in Libra (Venus sign) = Jala Tattva afflicted — blood-related problems (water element depleted)
- Moon + Mars both relate to blood — blood-related health issues possible in first ten years
[!WARNING] Both Shashtamsa and Trimshamsa confirm Mars and Moon give health problems. Blood-related issues are specifically indicated. Remedy strongly recommended.

- 6th from Amatyakaraka = Leo (Sun)
- Sun is with Mercury → Rama (Sun + Mercury combination)
Ishta Devata
- 12th from Atmakaraka in Navamsa (for Moksha)
Recommended Mantra
Lakshmīndra Siṃhaṃ Mamadehi Karavalambam
(From Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalamba Stotram by Shankaracharya — "O Lakshmi Narasimha, give me your hand, please help me rise.")
💊 Remedies and Muhurta
Recommended remedies:
- Navagraha Homam — for all three Gandanta planets
- Mrityunjaya Mantram — 1008 recitations during homa
- Ayusha Suktam — to support longevity
- Lakshmi Narasimha worship — photograph in baby's bedroom, mantra daily
Timing — 21st day from birth:
- Jan 6 + 21 days = January 27, 2007 (Saturday)
- Tithi: Shukla Dashami (auspicious — 71% remaining most of the day)
- Nakshatra: Krittika (Sun's nakshatra)
- Thara from birth nakshatra (Ashlesha): Kshema Thara (well-being — auspicious)
- Varam: Saturday — not ideal but acceptable
[!TIP] "The person will live long and do great things, but the beginning is perilous — that is why we are suggesting Ayusha Suktam. Tell parents clearly so they don't get overly concerned." — PVR
👨👩👧 Dvadashamsa — Impact on Parents
Father (L9 Arudha = Gemini):
| Dasha/Antardasha | Assessment from Gemini as Lagna | Prediction |
|---|---|---|
| Mars–Rahu (current) | 6th lord in 5th (Dhiranta Yoga) | Some success, overcoming obstacles |
| Mars–Jupiter (from Oct 2007) | Jupiter = 10th lord, giving Gaja Kesari Yoga from Gemini (2nd lord Moon exalted + 10th lord Jupiter) | Good career period for father (1–1.67 years) |
"The child brings luck to father — particularly in father's career. Jupiter antardasha starting in October 2007 will be particularly good." — PVR
Mother (4th house = Sagittarius):
- Sagittarius lord Jupiter is in 6th from it (12th house) — some challenge
- Rahu afflicts the 4th house itself (enemy of both Moon karaka and Jupiter lord)
- Some tension between child and mother relationship — not smooth
- However, Mars (yogakaraka for Sagittarius Lagna) aspects 10th from 4th → good for mother's career in Mars Dasha
Relationship conclusion: Child will receive more guidance from father than mother. Father's Arudha (9th lord Arudha) is stronger.
📚 Chaturvimsha (D24 — Education)
| Factor | Condition | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna lord (Saturn) | In 7th house, aspects Lagna | Lagna lord supports Lagna |
| 9th and 4th lord (Venus) | In Lagna | Yoga Karaka in Lagna — Raja Yoga on Lagna axis |
| Jupiter | Exalted | Secondary strength |
| Moon | Weak (6th lord, eclipsed by Rahu) | Some problem in early education |
| Mars | In 4th house | Affliction to early education |
Conclusion: Early education (first 10 years, Mars/Moon Dashas) may face obstacles. Later education will be stronger. Fundamental strength in Chaturvimsha — she will be a good learner overall.
🕉️ Vimshamsa (D20 — Spiritual Pursuit)
| Factor | Condition | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna lord | In 8th house | Spiritual — Sadhana and hidden pursuits |
| 7th, 10th, 5th lords | In 12th house | Renunciation, spiritual giving |
| Mercury, Venus, Jupiter | In 12th | Many benefics — highly spiritual |
| Moon | Affected by Saturn (Graha Drishti) and Mars | Renunciation + passion in spiritual pursuit |
| Saturn affecting Moon | Strong | Vairagya (detachment) in how she seeks God |
| Mars affecting Moon | Strong | Passion, fire, energy in spiritual pursuit |
"This is a very precious child, a very spiritual child. The spirit of renunciation will be strong. When Moon is affected by Saturn in Vimshamsa, there will be a lot of Vairagya." — PVR
Career speculation (Dashamsa):
- Ketu and Mars in 10th from Lagna (Dashamsa) → Engineering or technical career
- Mars in Indramsha (powerful Amsha) → Influential person
- Mars as Yogakaraka in own sign → Strong career Raja Yoga
- Multiple influences (Venus = arts/sciences, Mars = engineering, Rahu = unconventional) → Career domain may evolve; bio-engineering or converging fields possible
